US made Cats?
Submitted by woody on Fri, 2012-10-26 21:39Does anyone know of any US boat companies that make twin hulls boats, ally or glass? I've found Glacier bay and World Cat so far but I've got a mate looking to import an 18-20' cat if feasible and most of the US mobs start at 23'.

recommendations 5 -5.5m boat
Submitted by hilly9 on Wed, 2012-10-24 20:42
Hi all,
Am moving back to Perth in the new year. Have sorted the new house down Mandurah way. Now for the boat.
Was thinking ally as it will be used in the estuary down there quite a bit. Runabout to give a bit of protection for the missus and all the kids she wants to have, maybe even a small cuddy.
Would like to keep it in the 5 -5.5m range, good enough to head offshore on a fine day, possibly could also then fit in my garage. (7m long, access through the garage also, height though 2.17m)
Max budget is at 40k. Can I get new for this with a 4 stroke or would second hand be a better option? Hard to get a handle on prices over the net and not back in Perth for another month or so to do a run around of the boat yards.
Any suggestions are much appreciated,
Cheers
Pete

Boat deck paint
Submitted by flexn on Tue, 2012-10-23 15:15Hey all
I'm sick of my boat carpet and want to try something else. Don't want to spend a fortune though. I've been reading a bit about the deck paints that are slip resistant. Can anyone recommend one?
So far I have been looking at

Where to buy outboard parts?
Submitted by Matty22liverpool on Mon, 2012-10-22 18:16Hi everyone,
I've had a look through the forums briefly and can't seem to find anything on where to go to buy outboard parts. I've got a 2 storke 2003 40HP Yamaha outboard which doesn't seem to like being started, although once initially started it starts and runs fine everytime thus far. Is this a common thing? Any advice or tips would be great.
Anyway back to topic where NOR is best to buy outboard parts? I.e. filters, plugs, leads etc
Thanks in advance.

2012 Yalta craft 2200 fisherman
Submitted by Noxious on Mon, 2012-10-22 16:32G'day
Just looking for peoples experiences with these boats or similar.
Me and a mate are looking at getting one. It will be our firstst boat that either of us have owned, both of us have family/mates with boats and our skippers tickets all sorted, so we have some boating experience, but not huge amounts.
Boat will be used primarily for fishing, with the hopes at getting offshore into some serious action as well as some in close stuff when conditions are less than favourable.
Would be looking at doing some diving maybe some skiing behing it as well as the odd bit of cruising and p1ss drinking... predominantly a fishing vessel though.
What are peoples thoughts?
What has drawn me to it is we set our budget at 45k - 50k (tops) brand new theygo for 48odd. Probably cost us 50k with insurance and a couple extras. It will be brand new and come with warranty, 4 stroke engine etc ~6m.
Peoples thoughs and experiences would be greatly appreciated
Cheers lads,
Alex

Loss of revs
Submitted by Brad Y on Mon, 2012-10-22 12:12Went out on saturday and while running along I noticed something on my boat. I was only getting 4800rpm WOT. When I bought the boat new in January I had it in a river near the gold coast at 5600rpm WOT. I know at the time I didnt have my fishing gear with me and Ive added 2 deep cycle batteries into the center console since then but I wouldnt think that I would lose 800rpm just like that. No change in prop, nothing.
Spoke to a mate this morning who told me to clean the fuel filter out which Ive done this morning. Hands still smell of petrol. Its one of the water separator/filter canisters so thats all done. There was a few jellyfish and rock crabs floating in the fuel out of it so fingers crossed the fuel flow was restricted and thats it.
Any other ideas as to what my rpm loss could be from? I wont get to test the boat out until wednesday or so to see if this was it.

Hydrastar / P3 setup
Submitted by Prego on Sun, 2012-10-21 12:27Have just installed new Hydrastar to the dual axle trailer and Tekonsha P3 to the car. Had difficulties bleeding brakes and located the problem as the Hydrastar not building enoiugh pressure. This led to check the P3 output. Seems that when I wiggle the wires into the P3 the output voltage increases and the hydrastar starts working (can hear the pressure build and pump noise increase).
Just wondering what output voltage other users get when the brake pedal is pressed. I'm geting 1.5V and it appears the hydrastar works ok when the wires are wiggled and the output gets above about 6V. Seems like there's a bad connection inside the new P3 as with the 1.5V output the brakes don't activate.
Anyone help me on this? Cheers.

Best 6 m fishing boat recommendations
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2012-10-21 10:54Righto, thinking of upgrading my trustie 540 trailcraft, which has served my faithfully for the past 3 years and has landed many a good fish.
My requirements are:
- must have soft ride due to my dodgy back. Glass only.
- fishability critical. My traily is excellent, must have a large cockpit, which excludes the typical American boats like boston whalers as their cockpits are just too small and distance over the transom too far when fighting fish around the back of the boat.
- must be able to do 40 knots flat knacker so cruising at 30 is comfortable.
- I love centre consols for fishability but just too wet and cold in winter, so runabout layout probably best.
- max 200 hp to limit fuel consumption, which I think correlates to around 6 to 6.25 m boat length to achieve 40 knots with 200 hp.
-$100k max new, will consider good second hand.
Ones on my radar so far are:
- cruise craft 625 explorer or outsider
- evolution 600 extreme - recent bad rap......
- Haines hunter 600 r
Would love a seafarer 680 voyager, one of the only true alkaround centre cab glass boats I know of, but it's just too big and would need a landy to tow.
Not sure if I should look at yankie imports? There are some great hulls with excellent build quality but th cockpit layout of most yank boats is just not to my liking, with long transoms, no proper foot recesses etc.
Would be great to get your feedback on various d presences, likes and dislikes.

Johnson outboard concern
Submitted by davidbland50 on Sat, 2012-10-20 23:12Hi all FWers,
As you all know, I have a 150hp 2st Johnson. Lately, I have found putting into reverse will cause it to make a rather loud clicking noise and the engine seems to be jumping backwards as this happens. What do others think, adjustment necessary of the gear cable or something more sinister. Thanks in lieu.

Boat Covers - Best ... Worst?

I need a good boat cover for my Frazer 5.25 voyager with a rocket launcher as i need to store the boat outside. Doesnt really need to be able to be left on with towing.
There seems a lot on the market , but nothing beats user experience , so would apreciate any input.

vhf antenna interesting info
Submitted by grayzeee on Thu, 2012-10-18 19:06http://www.llelectronics.com/docs/awards/VHFAntennas.pdf
Just bought a new icom vhf from USA for quite a saving , and was looking into antenna's.
Found the above link which is a bit of an eye opener. Of the 8' whips tested , some managed a paltry 7nm while others got double the distance in test.
Makes me wonder if the obligatory gme antenna's are anything like their radio's.
I couldn't even find the Db rating on their 8' antenna.
Looks like shakespeare are well well worth a look into.

Can you ID this hull?
Submitted by wet ones on Wed, 2012-10-17 19:52Hi,
I was wondering if someone could identify this hull? It is boat coded in WA starting with AU-TWA, the TWA part should identify the manufacturer but I' having no luck tracking that thru a google search. The hull is approximately 4.7m long and 2m wide, it has a shallow tunnel running the full waterline length of the hull.
If it is identified, what are they like? Quality, ride, stability and horsepower?
Thanks
Josh

Damage to Planning Strakes
Submitted by Toby Roe on Wed, 2012-10-17 13:29Hi All,
I have some damage to the bow section of the planning strakes on my sea ray that I strongly suspect is being caused by the bunks on the trailer. I removed the Teflon strip that the previous owner had on the bunks and replaced it with marine carpet but the damage still seems to be getting worse.
Could anyone recommend a good shipwright or similar that could diagnose the problem with my trailer, set it up properly and then repair the fiberglass and gelcoat on the planning strakes.
Cheers
Toby

2000 Yamaha 40XWT correct premix ratio??
Submitted by Mr M on Tue, 2012-10-16 19:55Hi guys,
I've bought a boat recently that came with a premix 40hp 2 stroke motor. I don't have the original owners manual to confirm correct oil/fuel ratio.. Dealer told me 50:1 but the manual I downloaded from Yamaha sais 100:1. The motor runs great. Is to much oil bad for the motor?
Would be great to get a confirmation from someone that has the same motor of similar age what does their original manual sais is the correct ratio..

Outboard issues 2006 honda 40HP
Submitted by tantrum on Mon, 2012-10-15 20:31A mate of mine has a Honda 40 HP four stroke outboard (2006) which used to run great but has developed an unsual problem. Under load on the way back in at about three quarter throttle the engine seemed to "Free rev" so he quickly backed it off to avoid damaging the outboard due to the over revving but once the throttle was backed off to neutral, the engine seemed to be fine and it was put back in gear but as the motor approached three quarter throttle the problem seemed to appear once again. So I guess to sum it up motor runs fine in idle, low revs etc but once it approaches three quarter throttle under load this problem seems to happen.
My mate limped the boat back in at low speed to avoid this problem but it has the two of us wondering what it may be so we were wondering if anyone has had any experiences like this with their motors?

Illegal Trailer / Rigs
Submitted by Andy Mac on Sun, 2012-10-14 11:22This post was by Sealure but put in the wrong place. I have copied and pasted here where perhaps it has more relevence.
This is my first post and I really enjoy the discussions that take place.
My friend and I attended the Mandurah Boat show on Friday.
We are both enthusiastic fishermen and old hands at boat/trailer ownership.
I was obvious to us that a number of the larger boat/trailer combinations on offer would exceed the 3.5 ton legal towing capacity of 4 wheel drives such as Toyota landcruisers.
We asked several exhibitors about weights.
We were repeatedly re-assured that a landcruiser would tow the rigs in question. The weights quoted never included fuel, water, electronics, anchor and fishing gear etc..
Their complete indifference to legal issues was frightening.
If involved in an accident insurance on boat, car and trailer is null and void.
A civil suit could see the owner lose all their possessions.
Criminal charges and jail terms are possible.
On the east coast boats and trailers are frequently subjected to weighing tests.
Sooner or later the Dept. of Transport over here will do the same.
In the meantime much more should be done to protect buyers from the sale of rigs which fail to meet legal requirements.

Engine in gear while towing ?
Submitted by Dizzy on Sat, 2012-10-13 14:14I followed a 5m+ stacer down the freeway yesterday and it must have had about a 3" pitch prop it was spinning that fast.
(I had a double-take as it looked like it was running)
It got me thinking, and I'm bored as shit in this crap weather at home so I thought I'd throw it out there to see what others think.
I've always knocked the engine into gear when towing, mainly just out of preference to stop the prop spinning its tits off.
I've yarned about it over the years with a number of people, some are against it just in case something hits it while travelling
- fair point, but chances are if anything hits in that area when towing there'll be a fair few other things to worry about.
Others go for the in-gear option to prevent unecessary wear. (I figured any load on bearings / gears would be bugger all so there'd be no heat to be cooled by water, so probably also dubious merit for this reason).
Probably neither are an issue if the leg is well rasied out of the wind behind the transom, but I try and tow with the leg lowered a bit to reduce transom strain (maybe I should get a transom saver thingy)

Trailer regs - HELP!
Submitted by Seafari on Sat, 2012-10-13 13:41I've got a 5.64m kayak (Hobie Tandem) and I want to avoid a dedicated trailer at all costs. My plan is to modify my 7ft x 5ft box trailer. Legally how far can the yak hang over the tailgate before catching the attention of the lawmen? I can also extend the draw bar of the trailer with a retractable drawbar tha slides out and is pinned (bolted) into position for when I am towing the yak around. Come garden refuse day I merely retract the drwbar so that the coupling is roughly where it is if the drawbar was never modified. Any ideas of where I stand with the law? I've tried finding info on the Dept of Transport website but no luck. Thanks

Swiftcraft 5.6m Viking Total Rebuild
Submitted by Baden01 on Fri, 2012-10-12 14:05I have just started a full rebuild on a Swiftcraft Viking and currently it is in the fibreglass shop being re gel coated inside and out expecting quite a transformation anyone interested in following this rebuild ? I have added some photos so far the Total build should be finished in about 4 weeks ready to fish. Call it crazy for spending $45K on a rebuild but I have had many fishing boats over the years and just love the ride these hulls give also the stability at rest. Swiftcraft made 3 variations of the 5.6m hull the Explorer half cab the Dominator Cuddy cab and the Viking runabout I chose the Viking as I am a serious fisho and hate valuable deck space being wasted with cabs. Some of the features of the rebuild include new 140 4st Suzuki, new windscreen, new seats, new stainless rocket launcher and bow rail, new canopies, new HDS 10 and Radar, new 27meg,VHF radios, new anchor winch, new dunbier twin axle trailer. Everything on this boat will be replaced except the Hull.
Hope you can follow the rebuild over the next 4 weeks will contantly update the photos stay tuned
Brought the boat for $2000 the following 2 photos are when I brought it.
This photo is when I striped her back ready for Gelcoating

If you break down out wide?
Submitted by grayzeee on Tue, 2012-10-09 19:00Just wondering what tools you carry on your average trip out, or whether you'd be completely stuffed should your motor cut out.
With todays modern motors , what can you realistically check before calling on sea rescue?
Personally, I'm no mechanic and would have no idea what to check before making the call.
I just make sure my motor is fully serviced and the battery's are good. Then it's all hope.

soda blasting?
Submitted by mrwinta on Tue, 2012-10-09 18:02I have a Trophy 2052 that has been Antifouled and it makes the boat look rubish and gets on everything including the cover and now it has got dirty black stains all up the side of the hull.... I want to remove it but after googling the process I can't tell if it would then have to be re-painted/ gel coated- am I being thick or can you just blast it off and away you go?
Does anyone on here do soda blasting? Maybe someone has had the antifoul on a trailer boat removed and can give me a bit on an insight into what needs to be done....
Thanks... Winta...

Stake out pole for flats/shallow water
Submitted by Brad Y on Tue, 2012-10-09 14:47Im looking around for a fiberglass pole so I can make up something like this- basically its a poor mans power pole but I want to use it as a shallow water pole and a stake down as well.
My boat can get through surprisingly shallow water for its shape and I enjoy fishing shallows in Walpole and Albany and in Geo Bay so something like this would be sweet. The pole is the hardest thing to find. Ive thought about broom handles pushed up iside PVC pipe and a push in steel tip but just thought I would put the feelers out for anything fiberglass or composite locally.
