Furuno or Lowrance networking opinions
Submitted by spook on Wed, 2012-08-29 07:07Hey guys, thinking of adding another unit to the whittley. I have a Lowrance lcx 27c or similar Gps/sounder combo at the moment and was wondering whether to add a new Furuno 627 or network another Lowrance, say Hds 7/8 combo for a backup sounder aswell. I do take the navionics app and charger on the boat as a fail safe.
Would be great to get some different opinions or advise as Im 50/50 and I havent used Furuno before. Thanks

Evolution 550 in perth
Submitted by Olliej on Tue, 2012-08-28 20:12
Does anyone know of someone with an evo 550 platinum in perth? Im considering one from over east as a replacement for my first boat, a cruisecraft spirit 470. As a cc man i was going to get an outsider 575 but after getting on one it wasn't the best fit. So before getting over to vic i'd be keen to get on one here if possible.

2001 40hp 2 Stroke Mercury Outboard Trouble
Submitted by joel88 on Mon, 2012-08-27 19:36Hey Guys,
Just having some trouble starting my outboard and hoping to get some advice.
Bought the boat recently second hand (had its annual service in June) and took it out twice both days running all day with no problem. It was easy to start and ran perfectly all day. Washed it all down after and flushed it thoroughly each time. Then went to go for another run on Sunday and it just would not start. Still has plenty of fuel so I'll remove that factor straight away. Starter motor would crank engine fine but would not fire. After about 15 minutes of trying and changing out the plugs it finally started and ran ok for 10 minutes and then we stopped to have a fish and it wouldnt start again.
Haven't been able to start it since. The spark plugs are all black and wet when I take them out even though they are brand new (not sure if that means anything). The fuel filter on the engine sits at about 1/3 full then we pump the fuel pump a few times and it firms up and the fuel filter fills to about 2/3. Then when we crank the engine we lose all pressure in the pump and the filter instantly goes down to 1/3 again.
Trying to think of anything else that might help diagnose the problem but just ask if you want more info.
Thanks in advance

Mercury outboard question
Submitted by flexn on Thu, 2012-08-23 19:05Hey all
I just bought a new boat with a 2006 115hp mercury optimax 2 stroke on the back. I haven't taken it for a spin yet but I've heard from a few people they are the same motor as a 135hp and are detuned and the air intake is restricted.
Is this true and can you open them up a bit more?
Cheers

furuno fcv 620 vs 627
Submitted by Nath86 on Thu, 2012-08-23 18:38Hi all,
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the fcv 620 vs the 627.
At an extra $400 is the 627 that much better. The funds will stretch the extra but if I don't have to thats money I can spend elsewhere.
I'm not fishing in too deep water as I'm out of Dampier and don't think I've got to 40m in my boat but I would like to go a bit deeper if I make it down to Exmouth
Keen to hear any comments and experiences.
Cheers Nath

Project: Pacemaker contessa 21ft (Sold)
Submitted by cameroncuz on Wed, 2012-08-22 19:54Looking at rebuilding this Pacemaker Contessa 21ft.
I would love to know anything people know about the hull?
Approximate age?
Is it the same hull as a 21ft offshore?
Anyone have one, or been in one offshore?
The previous owner had chopped down the stern and chopped off the cabin. I plan to replace the cabin, undecided what I will do with the stern :)
Also it is planned to be a 1-2 year project (I know I have a lot of work to do!)
Pic related.
Thanks heaps :)
Just ripped out the floor.
Sold :)

boat restoring
Submitted by seadog-1967 on Mon, 2012-08-20 04:44gday seafarers, thanks to all who gave me a wide range of ideas to remove boat from shed,as advised i did it slowly and carefully,no damage to me or boat, thanks again. Now i know there are decades of knowledge and experience out there i have a few questions. This is what i do know, the boat was built in 1962 in karratha to a hartley design,it is 25 ft long and 3.1 mtrs at it widest,it has had all the rust proffesionally removed and re-plated,it has been rustproofed and primered, originally it had a chrysler nissan diesel engine which has stamped 73h.p max and 53h.p"cont" complete with leg both of which were obviously discarded, for what the previous owner mounted in there which was a VOLVO 165hp AQAD40B with a duoprop leg,he was forced to sell this and told me that the new engine frame and mounts were to accomadate a volvo engine with a duoprop sterndrive 280 or 290 leg as this would fit the rear plate and match the bolt pattern at the back of the stern,Q1 could i get a 350 turbo cummings in there?the only reason i ask is i can get one of my father very cheap,i would then have to get that maronised and i have no idea what that could cost, secondly would i be able to get a compatable leg for it.Q.what would be the best option?.the boat is now sitting back on its heavy duty trailer and before i build another shed to put it in i was looking at some sort of ballpark figure on what it would cost to finish this project off,ie,decks, windows, electrics, cables, paint, ect, ect, ect, and if the price is out of my reach,i would no doubt talk myself into reluctantly selling it off as i have 580 freedom sport 150 4 stroke yamaha to poke around in.It really is a nice looking strong boat, unfortunatley the previous owner was forced to get rid of it due to personal reasons and at the time i couldnt say no,i am now wondering if i have bitten off more than i can chew,so if theres any good advice out there, and i know there is it would be sincerely appreciated,i still have the old chrysler nissan motor and leg plus the flybridge attachments, canopy and a couple of boxes of cables and chrome.thanks again...

Boat Lights
Submitted by Browndog on Sun, 2012-08-19 22:11Hi Guys, after some advice from those that have been there & done that. Time to upgrade the tinny (5m Ally Runabout) with some lights to hit the sound when things warm up. I remember seeing "Boatlightfishing" come on board as a sponsor, but now they are Korr Lighting, and no longer a sponsor? Anyone used these, are they as good as they say? Was planning on using these for decklights, will I need the 4m kit or 8m? Also need to sort out nav lights and wanted to go LED again for the low power draw. The boat already has side marker lights, but I think they were wired by a mad woman with PMS! Gonna start fresh, and will add masthead and hopefully a LED spot for the front, again any suggestions?
Cheers,
Browndog.

VRO refit
Submitted by davidbland50 on Sun, 2012-08-19 18:16Have been very happy with the performance of my 93 Johnson 150hp.A few months ago, I disconnected the VRO from the engine as I was initially having a misfire problem which ended up being a faulty temp sensor. What I want to do, is reconnect the VRO. I was wondering if anybody has done this and whether they had any issues I should be aware of. Thankyou in advance.

Curiosity question about I-Beam trailers
Submitted by till on Sun, 2012-08-19 09:06Hi,
mostly just a nosy question, but can someone on FW with one of these I-beam trailers measure me a couple of sections please?
What do they use for the main arms, the cross-braces and the drawbar? Just mm accuracy will do.
TC mention on their website that it is exclusive and it just bugs me - how do you get an exclusive section?
TIA,
till

mounting a minn kota on a tinny
Submitted by the_dude84 on Thu, 2012-08-16 19:59recently aquired a bow mounted minn kota second hand for my 3.8n savage snipe. I got the quick release bracket with it. The bloke i bought it off said you have to re-enforce the bow. He took his tinny to a boat yard and they did it for a couple of hundred bucks. It looks simple to do(4 bolts) Just wondering how i re-enforce the bow... i have a mate who welds ally really well. Has anyone out there done it and do you have any pics of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers guys

12V Battery isolator/charging dual battery setup
Submitted by Dan on Fri, 2012-08-10 12:24Hi All,
our boat has dual battery setup. Most times when using it, I set the manual switch to 'both' ie power comes from both batteries, and charge from outboards (in theory) should go to both.
Out of curiousity on my last run, I switched switch to battery 2 (after starting). and when I went to trim motor, all power dropped (radio went off, motor cut out) - as if battery 2 was totally dead !
I haven't gone back to check batteries with a voltmeter, but it has revealed a lesson, that you can't just assume that both batteries are getting charged. I'm planning on upgrading system to a redarc style management system that charges primary (cranking) battery first, then switches charge to auxillary. as well as a LED readout that shows both individual batterys charge. It's the same sort of setup that you have for you car when running dual batteries for a fridge or other auxillaries
Has anyone installed this type of setup ? - and more importantly - anyone know a good (preferably mobile) marine/auto electrician that I could get to help with install ?
cheers
Dan

Boat battery/charging question?
Submitted by spook on Wed, 2012-08-08 20:20I have a dual battery setup on my boat. Do you have to disconnect the batteries before charging them? I have just been leaving the back of the boat open for heaps of ventilation and switching both batteries to the off position.
I also happened to notice that I was getting a shock from the prop while on charge, I cant understand why. I'm not that clued up on boat electronics so some advice would be gold... thanks

Ribbed for its pleasure?
Submitted by scotto on Wed, 2012-08-08 19:01A mate has to replace some rollers on his boat trailer. It's a 7.6 jackman, and it actually crushed 2 rollers on our way to denham last weekend.
Is there any difference between ribbed and smooth rollers?? As in, is one for ally, and on for fibreglass?
I think the ribbed ones are a bit cheaper, but he wants to make sure he's getting the right type.

Garmin 540s Display problem
Submitted by Vinesh87 on Wed, 2012-08-08 18:33Before i bin it,
I got a nearly new Garmin 540s sounder with external gps with my boat, as i didn't want it i pulled it out and put in a a ray. Thought i would check it before i put in in another boat went to power it up starts off perfectly at full brightness and after 2 seconds drops to max dimmed (everything else works perfectly ). No matter what i do ( Factory reset with software + Firmware upgrade ) put the unit on full brightness it just stays dim. ? But works at full brightness every time i power it up. Have spoken to garmin no answers.
Just a stab in the dark but any ideas ?
Cheers
Vinnie
Help with twin fishfinder setup, please
Submitted by r.gates on Tue, 2012-08-07 19:05Hi guys
I'm currently running a Furuno FCV620 sounder alongside an HDS 8m plotter in the Trailblazer and as part of the planning process for a Kimberley boat trip, I'm interested in running a backup sounder & plotter from the runabout....an HDS 5x and a Northstar Explorer 567.
I'm worried about the potential for interference that could occur if I mount the Lowrance transducer next the Furuno transducer on the transom....or would their only be interference if I ran both units powered up at the same time.
I suppose the other option would be to mount the Lowrance transducer on the other side of the transom....although there's no mounting plate installed there; not that it's a big job to get a mounting plate added.
Does anyone currently run more than 1 sounder in their boat and how have you step them up? Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
regards
rusty...
