Help on outboard.
Submitted by original teenage on Thu, 2012-04-26 16:57 Well as most of you know I was looking for a gear box for my chrysler force 50hp outboard. After a good 3 weeks of searching around Australia, I finally located one in the belmont outboard wreckers( horrible customer service), so i thought great just get em to put it in and off I go. So I had to make an appoinment to send in the boat 2weeks later, telling me it would be done in a weeks time, so no worries, so far so good.
After a week they called saying they will need aother week, so I said no problems, when I went to pick the boat up, they said its all ready to go but they didnt even bother checking it...? they said it wasnt their job? anyone else have any experiences like this? Doesnt end there, being a owner of my first boat I had a few questions that I was wondering about the boat but all I got was blunt answers or go look on the internet. Very unhelpful. I paid 650 to put the gearbox in and on that day itself I took it down to point walter. The motor started fine and then after about two minutes it gave out a loud buzzing noise, so i called the last owner of the boat to be told that the engines overheating, so I went to check, and there is no water running through the motor, not being an expert myself, I have no clue what is going on?, and do I take the boat back to belmont do I not bother and try somewhere else.
P.s anyone that could help and reccommend me to a better boating/outboard outlet ,that'll be great.
Cheers

Trailer maintence for trip
Submitted by AaronC on Thu, 2012-04-26 08:26Hi guys,
Heading to exy in a month and just wondering what sorts of extra maintence and parts i should be taking wih me on the trip north.
My trailer is in pretty good condition at the monent and is always washed down/ inoxed after every use. It is a dual axle Trailit tralier. Thi is my first trip away with the new boat and just needing some advice.
It regularly does the trip to Lano with no probs but 15 hours is a little different than 1.5 hours.
Is it worth getting someone to come out and service it or can i do most jobs myself? First timer remember!!
Cheers

Honda Service at Onslow
Submitted by gbr41 on Wed, 2012-04-25 08:05Can anyone advise if there is a Honda service organisation at Onslow? I have a near new Honda 15 HP outboard and expect to hit the first 20 hour service time while at Onslow.
If not able to be done at Onslow, guess my next stop at Exmouth would be the go.
Thanks

Jack Plate and paint job
Submitted by davidbland50 on Mon, 2012-04-23 10:12Hey guys and girls,
I am chasing a mechanical outboard jack plate for my 150hp Johnson. I need to raise it by around three inches. So if there is anybody out there who has one lying around and who wants to part with it for a reasonable price either PM me or leave a message.
Also, birthday just gone and the usual monetary presents have let me considering repainting the boat. I am north of the river and am happy to prep the boat myself so all I need is someone you lot recommend to do the 2 pack for a reasonable price (repetitive aren't I?).
Thankyou.
David
Leeder Tomcat
Submitted by Righteo on Mon, 2012-04-23 09:12Boat seems to cavitate with the trim set anything above 1/4, basicly bottom 1/4 down is ok but if you set it to neutral trim the thing revs its tits off and goes nowhere. Is this normal? Boat runs well enough with it trmmed right down just curious as to why it would cavitate so much as soon as it goes above the 1/4 mark. 4.3 inboard model, any previous owners have any insight would be much appreciated.

Left the sounder on
Submitted by Tandawg on Sun, 2012-04-22 19:13Hi all,
Stupid me left the sounder on when I retieved the boat. In total it would have been out of the water for about 45mins before I remembered. Is this detrimental to the tranny?
It is a 600w Furuno tranny (Furuno 620 sounder).
Thank you
Chris

To Gel coat or to paint?
Submitted by Fraser 5.25 on Sun, 2012-04-22 18:18My 5.2m fibreglass boat is starting to show its age. I've got spider cracks and hair line cracks on the exterior hull and very small flakes of gel coat missing where it looks like the boat has hit a little hard coming into the jetty. Not too much is fallen off, about a 2mm squared piece here and there and I'm sure it's not going to sink any time soon. Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on what is the final finish on the hull of their fibreglass boats when they've had to renew the old fibreglass, gel coat or paint?
Cheers,
Ken

would an inboard put you off?
Submitted by grayzeee on Sat, 2012-04-21 05:28I've been doing as I usually do , and looking at used boats online
I'm really liking the fishability around the transom of the inboard powered boats , but I've been put off them in the past, and just skip past any boat that has one.
Some say guys don't want to service them as they are a pita for accessability. expensive too.
What are the real pitfalls and good points of owning an inboard vs outboard , which ones were gem's , and which were dogs?

Anchor winch problems
Submitted by doublej on Wed, 2012-04-18 19:29I was out the other day at the back of Gi and dropped my anchor.(It is a Maxwell anchor winch)
When the time came to move on.
I started to raise the anchor and all of a sudden my sounder alarm came on (Furuno).
Stopped what I was doing and tried to work out what was going on. Couldn't figure it so continued to raise the anchor.
Again my sounder alarm went off again and I noticed it was the low voltage alarm.
It was dropping below 10v. The engine was running in idle.
I stopped and the voltage went back up to mid 13 - 14v (normal).
I raised it again and it must of dropped so low it shut my radio first, then my gps and then my sounder. This has never happened before.
I then increase the rpm and got the anchor up and didn't use it again.
Got back home and went to flush the motor and had 2 dead batteries.
Batteries I think were in good condition and never had an issue before.
Could my winch be drawing power constantly or something stupid like that.
Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any ideas.
Cheers.

How do you keep the paintwork on your boat in top condition ?
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Wed, 2012-04-18 19:25I have a 3 year old plate ali boat - the boat is in top condition and is painted white with grey pinstripes.
I want to keep the paint in a really good condition because it is my pride and joy, and obviously want it in top condition for whenever or if I sell some time in the future.
I am also unable to park the boat under cover for the time being due to space, and therefore it does cop the elements everyday.
Am I going over the top with maybe treating the paint on the boat the same as the car - washing with fresh water and then a light wax !
Who else out there loves their pride and joy and what lengths do you go to to keep your tub in top condition ?

Dampier/Karratha/Pt samson radio channels
Submitted by crasny1 on Wed, 2012-04-18 13:40For all the crew up here. I constantly have my 27 on channel 16, but have to admit that listening to O/seas ships speaking in foreign tongue is getting boring.
What channel(s) are the general ones to monitor for routine inter-boat chat up here?
Cheers

Buying a Boat Interstate
Submitted by Tompkins on Sun, 2012-04-15 21:37
Hi everyone
Have any of you experence in buying a boat interstate?
I want to put an offer on a beautiful cruiser on the Gold Coast (private seller).
Organising a survey, transport etc doesn't worry me. My 2 main concerns are:
- Agreeing a price over the phone, paying for the survey and then being gazumped.
- How payment can take place to the confidence of both parties
Do you know a tried and tested method here?
Thanks

Is this boat worth saving?
Submitted by Beerzy on Wed, 2012-04-11 09:49Here is the story of the monument boat.
When I was about 7yrs my father bought a boat, still to this day I'm not sure what make of boat it is, I remember going out in the boat several times back in the day.
When I turned 16yrs for unknown reason the boat was not used again....
I am now 33yrs and this 19ft half cabin boat has stayed in the same position for 17yrs, the elements have taken a toll on this boat and the tyres have become one with the concrete. The trailer springs are rusted, the decking ply wood is stuffed and various other bits and pieces have aged over the time.
My father after 17yrs wants to send the boat off for scrap metal and I can't let this happen because I can see the potential value of this boat if it were to get restored.
The boat is now mine providing I move it from it's location in Perth and take it down to Busselton where I live.
I have some questions for the guys who know there boating stuff..
Is this boat worth saving or just scrap it?
How can I move the boat down south? The trailer is not road worthy, If I replaced the tyres can the boat and trailer be pulled up on a tilt tray?
Does anyone know what Model or Make this boat is?
I have heaps of photo's and I will attach the important ones for you guys to inspect.
I would really appreciate everyones advice and help with this.

Haines Hunter 650 Horizon (Used) vs Tournament 2100 WA (New)
Submitted by Tompkins on Sat, 2012-04-07 14:56
Hi everyone
As always, your expertise and opinions greatly valued and appreciated.
Been searching for a SAFE boat (Family of 4 for fun/overnighters/little fishing) and got my short list to the above 2 - both at around $69k.
The way I'm thinking is:
Haines Option
+ Tried and tested Haines reputation. Heavier, better sea boat, better fit out for sleeping (5), seating plumbed toilet, basin etc.
- The boat I looked at was 6 years old (dealer), well used (200hrs on Yam 150hp), tears on upholstery, grubby seats etc (although comes with 12 month warranty and gets 'detailed')
Tournament Option
+ Stunning looking & brand new. Lovely new Evinrude 150hp. Good write ups/reviews. More robust, longer warranty.
- Lighter hull, not as good at sea without the Haines rep. Not as good for overnighters (fewer berths, no stove, plumbed toilet etc). Slightly narrower beam/length.
Thank you so much for your help.
Tommo
