New boat owner - need help

Hey guys I just bought a early 90s half cabin Chiver's Hull 5.1 meter fibreglass boat with a 1997 115hp Johnson Ocean Runner engine.

Just a few questions, with that kind of boat (in very good quality) what kind of weather should I avoid (being fairly inexperienced) and how far out should I limit myself to. I wanna aim for some fairly decent sized fish in the boat but have no idea how far to go?

Cheers :)

If I troll 2000rpm or above it's all sweet .

Water is always running through okay with no blockages and I have had checked out with the proper software And all comes up fine . Boat is serviced every 12 months and checked over before every big trip I do by qualified mechanic . Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Peter

Best Boat Strategy for WA??

Hello - I am relocating to Perth in August and need some advice on: 1. do I bring my boat or get one there?  I see lots of lakes and a river system - is it worth bringing a fresh water boat over to fish fresh?

What is the smallest, (and still safe), v-hull boat that can be used there in the ocean?  I have looked up the charter companies and they are really expensive to me.  For the last 20years, I have been fishing off of the Yucatan Peninsula for Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi etc..  I also have a tournament BASS boat for fresh water tournaments.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance,

Just read something that said these transducers where designed for use with outboard boats to 12M only and not inboard/sailboats.

Can anyone shed any truth on this matter for me?

accessing trailcraft fuel tank

Hi All

i have a problem with my 5.3 m trailcraft cc. I have a 115 yamaha 2 st fitted that has just started losing power when i increase the revs. this is a frustrating problem as it occurred previously so i took the boat to a yamaha tech who could find nothing wrong with it, after running it in a tank for over an hour and suggested water may have some how got into the system. Anyway took the boat home and went on 2 more short trips doing about 20 kms with no problems, all was good until i ventured about 25 km out this weekend the motor ran fine until i stopped and attempted to move spots when the symptoms returned. Starts fine put it in gear give it some curry and the power just fades after a while it would slowly build up power and seem to run fine until i backed it off and when i give it revs again same thing. If i rev it in neutral it revs out no problem but soon as i put it in gear power fade. We got home and when i flush her she idles real rough and splutters out  i had another tinker today put the muffs on and she seemed to idle perfect. Online research and the symptoms have led me to believe that there may be some crap circulating  in the fuel tank after prolonged usage this craps is getting stuck around the fuel intake inhibiting fuel flow and loss of power after a period of no use this shit falls off and the motor runs fine again for a period, this seems to explain why short trips are no problem but longer trips are. I should mention the fuel filter had about 40to 50 mls of what looked liike gunk in it (could be water) below the petrol when i emptied it into a clear jar. Is this normal?  Any way gonna borrow a portable fuel tank off the mehanic on wednesday and go for a run to see if this narrows down the problem.

My probem is, if it is crap in the tank or even deteriorated fuel lines  how do i access the tank. THe boat is second hand and the carpet has been stuck down so i cannot see where i can access the tank. The tank is directly below the seat  and looking in the small viewing hole doesnt show a lot. Reading online it seems the mercury fuel hoses tha yamaha uses are very succeptible to breaking down and should be changed and alot of people have done it on the trailcrafts but i cant find info on getting to the tank. Please help

Early Model Landcruiser 200S Oil use

Not all fishing, but it tows the boat.

Love the tank, but it uses oil like a 2stroke. I am sure I heard there is problems with oil consumption in this early model.

Am I correct or not, and if so what is the problem.

Up here in Karratha Im getting the run around trying to fix it, and still under warranty.

Boat winch question

Hey guys,

I was just after some ideas or options. My boat trailer has a winch that is a modifyed starter motor and flywheel. When I want to use it, I have a battery that is mounted on the trailer and just plug the terminals on (same size as a car battery leads). The annoying thing is having to recharge it every few trips because it obviously has no alternator connected to it.

Now the thing is, I have my dual battery set up in my patrol with an allrounder battery. Would I be able to modify the starter motor positive to a plug so I can plug it in to my fridge plug? The wiring for the plug is the ARB kit so it is bigger than the factory wiring. Would this work?

The other option is running a postive battery lead from the front to the back with a switch, but that would cost a bit.

cheers

Dual battery set up

Hi just wondering if anyone can help me with my dual bettery set up.

I had just one battery hooked up, it was charged and worked fine. Then I decided to get another battery and make a dual battery set up. One was a bit flat so I started off the second, after running all day with the switch set to BOTH the battery was still dead flat. I charged it up before I went out the next time, left it on both, and it drained completely leaving only battery number 2 charged. The only thing I can think is how I earthed the first battery.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The Red is the positve + lead, Grey is negative -

Smashed Wind Screen

Hi all,

Just after some help we managed to cop a smashed left side front wind screen on our way home from Denham last week. So far we have had no luck sorcing a replacment the boat is a Whittley 2100 Clearwater. The boat is insured, it looks as though there are no replacements. Anyone else been through this?

Finally imported a boat !!

Hi Everyone

After over a year or researching and talking to people i bit the bullet and went ahead with importing a 2007 2052WA with 68hrs on the motor, Lewmar profish1000 winch , Garmin sounder, shore power etc etc.

Firstly it was a private boat through a broker of Newportboats who were amazing.

I had it mechanically and structurally surveyed by two independent surveyors in the US. They provided me with Computer printouts, engine diagnostics, compression tests , high resolution photos valuations etc etc.

I had the boat dropped of at West Coast trailers where they fitted the hydrastar electric override brakes, breakaway unit and Aust standard hitch and chains ($1500)

I then had it picked up by Portsea marine it was cleaned, packed and shrink wrapped and dropped in Fremantle via ro-ro transport. This included help with the Dotars and import permit. ($10,500)

Once in Fremantle i had to pay the GST and Quarantine ($3800)

To tow it off the port i needed a friend with MSIC card because they could not organise a escort for me quick enough.

I had the HIN Validated and registered with marine safety 2 days later.

I re-wired the trailer with amber lights, License plate light and side clearance markers. and did a few minor adjustments to comply with ADR Specs. I had the trailer weighted at a weight bridge and the VIN Number and trailer stamped with tare weight and all associated details.

It went over the pits first time with no worries.

Total Cost $43,000

Everything came as expected the boat and motor are in perfect condition and everything stated was with the boat.

The only problem i had with all off this is that because the boat and trailer where on the same bill of sale the DPI wanted to charge me stamp duty on the whole boat cost which was sorted out fairly quickly. From start to finish the whole process only took 2 months. First thing i did was drain all the fuel ( even though there not suppose to ship with fuel) and have a full service done including al new oils, lubes imepllors and filters. Shes been out on the water 3 times now and i really like the ride and handling. I can't wait to do a few more tweaks e.g Raymarine e97.

So at the end off it all did i get a good buy? I think so it was a lot of hard work and i may not have saved much money but it was a great experience. Few pics of ther new rig!

Cheers,

Vinnie

Help on info for buying a boat.

Hey guys, buying my own first boat very soon and am going to see this one very shortly http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/port-kennedy/boats-jet-skis/6-2m-frasercraft-with-280-penta-leg/1002066860.

I was just wondering what you guys think of it, if you have had a boat with a Holden 202 inboard or similar boat to this and what you think?

I'm looking for something that will comfortably go over to rotto and behind it to fish the shelves with a budget of 13 grand at absolute max.

Appreciate any tips (I AM doing my own research, talking to a boatie might help though :) )

Cheers.

GPS/Sounder advice please.

Hi guys,

In process of buying new GPS/fishfinder combo unit on it for 5.4m fibreglass boat.

Budget max $900 - $1000.

Probably going for the Lowrance Elite 5. I've also seen the Lowrance Elite 5 DSI, but this is bit over my budget.

Any opinions, is there much of a difference between the two, is it worth stretching my budget for the DSI, or is the Elite 5 good enough.

Also, on a different topic, need to get some tie downs for holding boat on trailer ( hooks on transom ), any advice on what type /where to get them from.

Cheers,

Michael.

Baron Outrider

Anyone here own or owned a Baron outrider, that is the one where the motor is mounted out from the transom on a frame as opposed to a pod.

iPad iPhone GPS (Yes, again!)

Hey guys, I have done a search on all the old posts, some good info but none of them answer all my questions, so here we go again.

I have a 5m plate ali runabout with sounder, a work supplied iPhone 4 and a work supplied "new iPad". I use the boat 99% of the time in the sound around Garden Island and out the back of GI too. I'm never out of sight of land. I was hoping to get a GPS unit that would give me all the basic functions and a screen larger than the postage stamp sized stuff I have seen on cheap hand helds.

Essentially I would like to be able to share spots, mark my own spots and get back to them next time. Are there any apps that people have used and recommend that work well? Or am I waisting my time and should just save the $800 or so that seems to be the going rate? Or any suggestions for a basic dedicated GPS with marine charts and a decent size screen? (Hand held or fixed is OK)

Any help & comments appreciated.

Cheers.

Yamaha 50 problem

Went out at Mindarie today for a fish. Left the marina and the motor, a 2001 50 hp yamaha 2 stroke, was running sweet. Motor only has 260 hrs and hasnt given me any trouble before. Chugging along on the plane about 2 kms out and the motor suddenly revs really high like the boat is cavatating almost and then the motor cuts out.

Started again and as soon as I tried to put any load on it it would just cut out. Fuel isnt overly old maybe 6 weeks. Serviced 60 hrs ago. I did notice that there was alot of oil on the transom before I left home but thought it was a leaky cap on the oil resivoir as I always stow the motor up and the tabs down to keep the pressure off the hydrolics.

Anyway had to limp back in at about 2 knts as thats as fast as it would go. Everytime I tried to put more power on it wouyld just cut out/ stop completley. After 45 minutes of crawling Im not happy and the wife was freaking out which didnt help. I specifically wanted this motor as I was told they are bullet proof but after today I'm not so sure.

When I got back in I hooked the hose up and the motor would rev freely without load but is running rough as. Checked the plugs and they seemed fine. Gave them a clean and didnt make any difference. Checked all the obvious stuff but it all seems fine.

Does anyone have any ideas before I take it to the shop and get that cash register look from the guy behind the counter who is now planning his kids college education at my expense. Had a look through the forums but didnt find much that helped. ANY help would be greatly appreciated

Cheap used trailer tyres

Just a heads up to anyone looking for some cheap trailer tyres - I needed new tyres for upcoming Exmouth trip and having already spent quite a bit on the trailer (axle, springs, hubs), I started looking for a cheaper option than the $80-$100 each for new tyres.

I found an outfit called Tyresave in Medina (Rockingham) that sell near-new used tyres for about $40-50 a pop (includes fitting and valve) . Not wanting to replace one set of old perished rubber with another, I thought I'd go down and give them a proper look over.

The guy down there (unfortunately didn't get his name) was really helpful and knowledgeable. He showed me how to find the age of the tyres (turns out the ones on my trailer were 15yrs old ), then he went through the options , showing me which tyres have the harder compounds (better for trailers) and also recommended that I get a slightly narrower tyre as mine were just sticking out past the side of the mud-guard (new axle was 25mm longer). Ended up getting a matching pair of Kumhos that were only year old and looked almost new.

Anyway, it seems rare to find good service and value these days so thought I'd just give them a shout out, and if anyone here needs cheap new rubber, i'd definitely recommend them.

Integral fuel tank for 2.5hp mariner outboard

Hi,

Does anyone have, or know who to go to for a used Integral 2.5hp Mariner fuel tank? Or a whole wrecked motor for parts if the price is reasonable?

Someone has overtightened the cap so there is a large crack where the filler thread joins the plastic tank.

The motor serial no. is 0A882230

Thanks

Help on outboard.

Well as most of you know I was looking for a gear box for my chrysler force 50hp outboard. After a good 3 weeks of searching around Australia, I finally located one in the belmont outboard wreckers( horrible customer service), so i thought great just get em to put it in and off I go. So I had to make an appoinment to send in the boat  2weeks later, telling me it would be done in a weeks time, so no worries, so far so good.

After a week they called saying they will need aother week, so I said no problems, when I went to pick the boat up, they said its all ready to go but they didnt even bother checking it...? they said it wasnt their job? anyone else have any experiences like this? Doesnt end there, being a owner of my first boat I had a few questions that I was wondering about the boat but all I got was blunt answers or go look on the internet. Very unhelpful. I paid 650 to put the gearbox in and on that day itself I took it down to point walter. The motor started fine and then after about two minutes it gave out a loud buzzing noise, so i called the last owner of the boat to be told that the engines overheating, so I went to check, and there is no water running through the motor, not being an expert myself, I have no clue what is going on?, and do I take the boat back to belmont do I not bother and try somewhere else.

P.s anyone that could help and reccommend me to a better boating/outboard outlet ,that'll be great.

Cheers
