Fitting a charge rectifier/regulator to a 30hp Johnson 2000 model
Submitted by trout1105 on Wed, 2022-03-30 07:56I have an older Johson 30Hp outboard that I need to fit a voltage regulato/rectifier to so that it can charge a battery to run the bilge pump, sounder etc.
The engine does have a charging coil fitted But instead of just 2 yellow wires coming out of it like on the Yamaha engines this one has 3 wires, 2x yellow and a yellow/blue wire.
Anyone here know which wires go where , I am assuming that the 2x yellow wires are for the AC current But the yellow/blue wire has me stumped.

Pivot tube repair
Submitted by Bradmac73 on Fri, 2022-03-18 14:09
G'day all,
The steering on my boat has become increasingly stiff. Thought it was the cable so serviced that only to realise it's some corrosion in the pivot tube that's causing the issue. Can't seem to find a marine mechanic who is interested in fixing this for some reason, so it's gonna be a DIY.
Anyone on here ever attempted this and have any pointers or traps for a novice I should be aware of? From what I can find so far on the trusty google looks like a complete strip down, leg off, power head off and then onto cleaning up the pivot tube.
Appreciate any advice, even if the sage advice is "don't f******g do it"
Motor is a 75hp Merc 2 banger
cheers

Yamaha 100 600 hours loosing power
Submitted by grahaml on Sun, 2022-03-13 07:18Hoping some one can help with my engine fault
traveling out to the 70s last week and I lost power while at half throttle one gauge blacked out and the tachometer numbers went hay wire on the other gauge
i returned the motor to idle and all returned to normal.had a look around and couldn't see anything wrong.put the throttle back into gear and throttled up at around 2500 the engine started to shake and miss and lost power and the gauges did the same thing again one blacked out and the tachometer went haywire.return to idle all good again
i did notice before the gauge blacked out that the battery voltage dropped to 8 volts when under revs but returned to 14.6 at idle
i swapped the battery's over and tried again and all was good.Reset the batteries to the original position and could get the fault back
turned and headed in and the fault never returned
what's my next steps as the faults not there now and I don't want to head out thinking I may get stranded
cheers for any sugestions

Anti Foul Removal
Submitted by Browndog on Wed, 2022-03-02 12:21Hi FW Crew, does anybody have suggestions for who I can get to remove old anti foul from my 25' Powercat?
Boat is on a trailer so can tow NOR or SOR as needed. Will be going into a Hillarys pen with a Sea Pen so antifoul not needed. Intent is to remove and take it back to gelcoat and polish. Have tried a few places but nobody seems to do or have experience at comlete removal.
Cheers,
BD.

Long or short
Submitted by Bloggsy on Mon, 2022-02-21 07:04I have a Polycraft Tuffy fitted with a Parsun 9.8 hp short shaft (don't judge me it came with the boat) but I am finding it a bit hard on the back without power tilt and trim. So I thought that I would look for a 15 hp (maximum rate allowed) with electric start & power tilt & trim in a short shaft but all of the main manufacturer's only seem to make electric start & tilt & trim in their long shaft motors. So I have been toying with the idea of fitting a jack plate to lift the long shaft motor up.
Any way I did some measurements and I always thought that to have a short shaft your transom height from top of transom to lowest part of hull should be 15" but mine measures almost 18" The Parsun cavitation plate lines up with the bottom of the hull but from the cavitation plate 15" comes to the top mounting bolt hole again I thought that you measured from the cavitation plate to where the mounting bracket sits on the transom.
So are the Parsuns short motor actually longer that the standard 15"?
The present set up seems to cavitate under certain running conditions.
Any way I guess my question is would a long shaft Suzuki/Yamaha be suitable for my boat and if necessary I am happy to fit an adjustable jack plate to raise up that extra 2" approximately. or if anyone knows of a short shat 4 stroke 15 hp outboard with electric start and power tilt & trim can you please let me know.

Transducer - No good - fix - machined
Submitted by Bryce Day on Mon, 2022-02-14 18:50Design fail. Leading edge good trailing edge no good. Will keep transom side pointed to gunwail.

Trailer brake hydraulic actuator
Submitted by Josh on Sat, 2022-02-12 19:59Does anyone have a serviceable electronic hydraulic trailer brake actuator for a trailer in their shed?
I just picked my boat up from insurance (salvage buy back) and the actuator pump is seized.
I'm planning to tow it back to Albany from Perth tomorrow, and have spent the day trying to rebuild the actuator with no luck.
Long shot, but I thought I would pose the question.

Boat Improvements - Finished!!
Submitted by Piggy on Thu, 2022-02-10 09:39Boat improvements finally finished
So from the close of demersal season 2021 I decided to spend a bit of money getting the old girl back up to scratch.... Its 12 years old so thought Id give it a birthday. Previous posts I rewired the whole boat and made a cieling and now Ive finally finished the rest of it. Did a bit of ally work on the gunnels, adding more rod holders and stubby holders. Filling in holes not needed and relocating the mounts where the extended top is mounted on the gunels and added rocket launcher rod holders on the ectended top. From there i had the gunels all repainted and it came up really good.
Then the expensive part haha got deck armour fitted but I tell you what it looks bloody awesome even though its expensive. Mine was around the $5k mark.
All up with the wiring, ceiling, ally work, painting, deck armour I spent around $10k but from where it was to now it looks a hell of alot better and easier to fish out of.
Cheers

No power underload
Submitted by dakka on Sun, 2022-02-06 08:33Hi guys
while I am waiting for Arthur page to come out in a fortnight, anyone able to shed a bit of light on what is happening with my outboard.
I have a 2008 115hp Mercury optimax 2 stroke, and currently I have no power under load only goes at 6.5 knots, I have changed fuel tank replaced water separator filter, fuel filter new fuel hose and primer bulb put in 3 new spark plugs but still no power underload, perfect in driveway on the muffs but not on the water, I took prop off found a bit of line on shaft also pretty rusty behind prop (any thoughts there)I changed gear oil it was not milky it was dark oil but smelt burnt. I thought it might have gone in guardian mode but I have no alarms or faults on my smart gauges any thoughts while I am waiting for Arthur.

Trailer brake wiring
Submitted by Bryce Day on Fri, 2022-02-04 19:59 Ran two seperate lines for trailer lights. Kept all terminations for trailer brakes and side lights/lights in waterproofish box. Will also fill with sensor or something maybe. See how it goes. Might not be any better than the normal solder and dual core heat shrink. But time will tell.
it's not finished in second photo I just jammed it all in there before I left

Trailer repairs
Submitted by Josh on Wed, 2022-02-02 12:24Hi Guys,
It's looking like I will buy back my fire damaged boat from insurance and plan to get it repaired myself.
I am now based in Albany, and the boat is in Bibra lake, so ideally I will get someone to fix it, and I can just come to collect.
I'm looking for recommendations of a trailer repair guy who could put a new brake system controller on as the last one was burnt in the fire.
Cheers,
Josh

Winch Circuit Breaker
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2022-01-17 16:26I installed a Bell Viper winch last year and it's been working flawlessly however yesterday when checking over a few things before heading away I engaged the circuit breaker and it mades a squealing sound then throws the switch. I have isolated the cicuit breaker by disconnecting the reversing solonoid and switch and it does the exact same thing when connected to the fully charged battery.
It appears like and I'm hoping it's just a shagged circuit breaker but is this a common issue with them as I might grab two just in case.
Cheers JF

98 oceanpro 115 overheating
Submitted by shane78 on Sat, 2022-01-08 14:54Hey guys hope someone can help, so down at the lake last four days, my 98 oceanpro 115 running sweet, last day there had a moment were I thought I was starting to run out of fuel so stopped and refilled, didn't turn off engine while I was doin this and she started to sputter so shut it down and continued, after this I tried to restart but it took maybe 5 mins to restart could have over chocked it not sure, anyway it finally turned over and had a couple of backfire coughs, so resumed activitys towing a biscuit but suddenly realised my temp was reading bout 20 on guage hovering on overheating sign, backed off and tried again, at idle 1000 rpm temp is normal as soon as I start any higher revs the temp goes with it and on the plane bout 2500 3000 hovering just over 20 on guage, I have replaced both Thermos recently, and the tell tale water is cool what could be causing this, never happened b4.

New prop
Submitted by chevaps on Tue, 2021-12-28 17:25I'm up for a new prop after today's outing.
I currently have a Suzuki 16" 3 blade with 20 inch pitch.
The default business that comes to mind is Just Propellers, but just wanted to hear of other businesses that forum members have had a good experience with.
Also, now would be an opportunity to look at alternative prop configs (eg 4 blade in lieu of 3). Is there typically a direct conversion going from one to the other, or am i up for trial and error on water?
Cheers.
Tom.

Yamaha f115lb
Submitted by Marineboy on Sat, 2021-12-25 15:39Went out for a dive Christmas Eve and motor was surging and missing/losing power, no apparent water in the separator bowl and both fuel filters are clean. My guess is sucking air somewhere in the fuel system and my question is when the engine is running should the primer bulb be hard or soft as mine is soft ?
cheers

Cheap Sounders
Submitted by Josh on Tue, 2021-12-21 09:07Hi guys,
While my Caribbean is going through the insurance process, I have picked up a little plate Ali side console, which needs a little bit of an electrical upgrade.
Does anyone have experience with the lower end of the sounder range?
I'm looking for something in the $500-750 range and 7in or bigger screen. And a combo with maps.

Glass tinting
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2021-12-20 17:14question-tinted glass in your rec boat-grey or green.
I would have never considered it given we do some night runs and never used it-but understand the UV/glare value.
Anyone got any practical knowledge on the 2 colours or is the colour choice purely cosmetic?
Yamaha DES
Submitted by ScottC on Mon, 2021-12-13 11:39Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone had experiecne with Yamaha's new digital electronic steering? I'm placing an oorder for a motor early next year and just not sure the extra $7k is worth it.. I guess it is the latest technology but $7k on other items i.e sounders etc goes a long way.
Cheers, Scott
