Cost to service
Submitted by selthy on Thu, 2021-12-02 17:14Keen to hear what you were charged for a recent service. I have a Merc 135/150hp 4 stroke, I expect some Covid tax but just received a quote for over $1,000 and fell off my chair. The motor is still in warranty period, so keen to use a registered Merc dealer. Is the dealer taking the piss?

Ali brazing rod for pin hole
Submitted by Oldbull on Wed, 2021-11-10 10:39Has anyone used an ali brazing rod to repair a tiny pin hole. The pin hole is in the transom near to one of the bungs so will brazing work on a vertical surface or will it just run off. There was also some paint bubbling but I have sanded that back and there are no pin holes under it.

Boat Improvement - Rewiring the boat
Submitted by Piggy on Sat, 2021-11-06 08:05As part of the improvements I'm doing to the old girl was to rewire the accessories, so basically rewiring apart from engine harness.
The boat is 12 years old and I tell you what when it was wired originally the "auto sparkie" mustn't have been very good. The bus bars that were used were terrible, wiring was wrapped everywhere, in-line fuses everywhere,, very average to say the least. I'm surprised I haven't had many issues to be honest.
Tidied up all the wiring and installed a proper fuse / junction box so easy to figure out if a fuse pops. Removed the isolators and cleaned them all up, small amount of green death but nothing serious which was good to see.
Took a day and a half full days to get it done but so glad we did it. Looks a hell of a lot better and easier to deal with if there are issues
A few before and after photos attached
Next thing is a bit of ally work and painting

Why aren't flooding keels popular in WA?
Submitted by VaSSagO on Fri, 2021-11-05 15:34Chivers were doing them but no longer making ally boats.
Westerberg do on some (westerberg Eclipse), but not clear on website.
Sherwood Marine has designs but only sell the design.
In NZ oviously they are popular (Bar Crusher, Extreme etc), also Svensson in Qld doing them and Noble used to do them.
I don't see any major drawbacks to floodable keels, allows for a deeper Vee, smaller chines and better stability at rest. Sure slightly more draft at low speeds.
From what I can see pretty much all the ally boat builders use use the Jackman or Dennis Walsh design which really hasn't changed much in the last 30 years. Is this because of cost, they have the templates already and just keep on usng them, modifying them at no cost / effort.

John Papas Trailer - Guides to first keel
Submitted by Ush on Thu, 2021-11-04 09:01Hello all,
Have a box style John Papas Trailer - pretty basic for my 4.2 Bluefin. Having a little drama at times loading it onto the first keel when retrieving as its got no guiding features. Anyone face similar dramas? not much of an issue with some assistance but solo and a little crosswind it'll be a pain in the butt. Ive considered the Ezi Loader - only to find out the first keel sits well above the rear crossbar making it incompatible.
Any thoughts or solutions to make it easier when retieving?? Many thanks!

Under rib rubber replacement
Submitted by Mars2atk on Fri, 2021-10-29 10:24Hi folks, first time boat owner and inherited an old tinny from a family friend, suspect it might be an old 1979 14" Quintrex Fishabout Mk2 with an '82 60hp Johnson on the back.
Currently stripping her down and trying to give her a bit of a makeover, but I've noticed there's some old hardened rubber strips wedged between the ribs and hull, was thinking of taking it all to replace so I can give everything a really good clean and find any hidden salt traps.
Does anyone know what type of rubber I should replace it with and where I could get it? Or should I just leave the old stuff alone?

Boat improvement - new ceiling
Submitted by Piggy on Thu, 2021-10-28 07:47Thought Id post on here for anyone who needs inspiration
After 12 years I decided I would spend a bit of money on my boat to get her back to her best. Plan is going to get a bit of ali work done, bit of painting done and re-wire the whole boat. But the first job off the rank when I had a rainy day free was to slap a ceiling in the boat and add a couple of extra lights.... Not really a necessity but made it look better.
Literally took me about 4 - 5 hours, around $300 in materials including new LED lights, jigsaw and a few screws but I rekon looks better than it did before
Will post other improvements I do to it over the next month or so

Stressfree anchor winch / Electric Trailer brakes
Submitted by Jayrog84 on Sat, 2021-10-23 18:03
Good evening everyone,
Have purchased a second hand boat recently and absolutely stoked with it. Couple of things that have me buggered however are the following:
Stressfree anchor winch has just recently started to struggle to pull the anchor rope up, seems to be slipping as its trying to wind in, I can still manage to get the anchor up with short bursts/pushes of the button but seems to be getting worse. have found it hard to find any troubleshooting questions anywere for these particular winches, will call them up monday if no one has any advice as I hear their customer service is bloody good.
My electric trailer brakes work in reverse, when brakes are applied and in manual override mode (have the tow pro elite 3 installed), however when I am driving forward they do not, I have had another vehicle hook onto the trailer and the same problem is evident, I have gone as far as swapping the brake and reverse wires over in the trailer plug and suprise suprise the electric brakes work when driving forward but not in reverse now. All the trailer lights are functioning as they should when braking when im driving forward so the wire that should be powering the actuator I assume is not damaged or faulty.
Has anyone got any kind of advice for me on these things? electric trailer brake conversations and threads are never ending but I haven't come accross this problem on anything in my searches....
Cheers

Murchison Siltation
Submitted by Dhu_west on Wed, 2021-08-11 20:38On the DOT website there is a notice saying the Murchison channel is silted up and is un-navigable. Is there anybody that is in Kalbarri now or has been recently that would be able to provide an insight in to the conditions up there, is it the river or the mouth?

GMD 7.5m build
Submitted by Bryce Day on Thu, 2021-07-29 22:19Start of the 7.5m Global Marine air rider build. Complete video in YouTube as build progresses. Not building them for a living so it is not a buisness f*%$ that just a personal build over the next 3 months. Will cover everything from trailer/boat build to complete fit out. Will do most of it myself with help from time to time. Should be working on it most days. Couple delays atm... waiting on Fronius to arrive and some 100x100x6 shs oh also axles from the East coast... should be in Perth tomorrow hopefully. I plan to have all the frames on the jig tomorrow and the catch tank drain lines run with a few stringers in along with the cable duct then a big shed clean.

How to remove hydraulic steering mount question?
Submitted by Kelvinjr12 on Mon, 2021-06-28 12:19Hi guys
I am having issues with water ingressing into the pod which my Honda 135 is attached to, there is a hatch on top of the pod which a marine company re siliconed however there is still water getting in weighing down the back of the boat. QUESTION? without having to lift the motor off I thought of taking off the hydraulic steering arm (see photos) there is a nut on either side of the arm however it appears when I turn the nut the other side turns I suppose I will need to get a mate to hold the other side with a wrench? has anyone ever removed one of these? & lastly if I remove the hatch & clean off the old silicone what is the best method to seal the hatch , any comments or advice appreciated . Suzuki DF140 Repairs Mobile SOR
Submitted by Browndog on Thu, 2021-06-17 21:01Hi guys, got a fuel issue on one of my 2006 Zuke 140's, runs fine at WOT for a while and eventually drops RPM / surges. Turn it off for 5 seconds then restart and it runs fine. Have swapped fuel lines/tanks/fuel filters etc, problem stays with the port side engine, so pretty sure it's high pressure pump or crap stuck in the VST.
Can anyone suggest a good mobile guy to do repairs? Boat is currently in Fremantle area and will be going back to Woodman Point soon. Appreciate any suggestions, cheers.

Electric motors with spot lock
Submitted by Willlo on Sat, 2021-06-12 21:30Hi guys ,
Ive been looking at the Lowrance ulterra leccy motor set ups. In particular one suitable for a 20 ft fibreglass boat.I think best suited would be 36vlt 80 or 110 lb thrust with the 72inch shaft . Also have any of you fellas hooked them up to your GPS ? So you can set it from your console or via remote.Looks like its going to be exxxy so wouldnt mind a bit of feedback before pulling the trigga.
P.S or are there a better brand of electric available that anyone has used ?
Cheers

Verado lower spark plug access
Submitted by Jim on Sun, 2021-06-06 13:46Gday,
I dont have the service manual available and cant find anything online about the 4 cylinder 2008 150hp verados.
Trying to fumble my way thru changing the plugs, top 3 plugs easy as. The bottom one looks like you need to remove other crap to get to it. The Cowl latch latch is off and I cant get the 'rear cover' thing off that blocks access.
Any gurus know what im talking about? if the pick works, the bloke here skipped this removal for some reason.
cheers

Moving from Twins to a Single
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2021-05-20 20:13Am chasing any advice or anyone that may be experienced in changing a boat from twin outabords over to a single?
I own a 26ft Fury Centre console and starting to think about repowering. Currently have twin 140hp 4stks and weighing up the options below
Twin 150hp (likely Yamaha as they support electric throttle and power steering)
Twin 200hp 4 cyl Yamaha
Twin 200hp 6 cyl Merc
or
Single 300 v8 Merc
The most obvious question is "Have i contacted the manufacturer" Yep I've spoken to Scott many times, and his opinion is both twins and a single will work well.
My problem is, im a creature of habit and i will go back to things that im used to. ie; if i eat a nice meal at a restaraunt, next time i go back to that restaraunt i will likely eat the same meal.
I know the Fury with Twins, i know how it runs, how it balances and how it turns. With a Single 300, i simply do not know what this will be like.
There is another obviuos factor, there is a significant purchase price difference between the Single 300 and any combination of twins, in the vacinity of $10-$15k so that is also weighing in on the decision.
Curious to know if anyone has made the transition on the same boat? and what the expectation compared to actual was like?
The last alternative is putting the Fury up for sale and buying something else....that idea I've been playing with for the last 2 years!
Any info on anyones experience would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Bodie

minor repairs
Submitted by Sea goat on Thu, 2021-05-13 13:17Hey guys. after, coming home fomr a run out deep i noticed my transducer bracket had come loose. it looks like the scres have pulle dout a bit. unsure if maybe i hit something while under way. was thinking of fixing it muyself as quite a long way to get it booked in anywhere.
I was thinkng my options are either;
screw in tight, and apply sikaflex aorund the screwheads to help seal. only concern is given they are self tapping screws that the thread hold may have bene effected?
2: pull screws out completely, aplly araldite to screws, then screw back in with sikaflex aorund the screw heads.
any suggestionos as to preffered methods, or other options? other materials to use?
cheers!
