Lowrance/Simrad Structure Scan- thoughts from those who have it
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Thu, 2011-04-28 16:56Hey hip cats
Seeing as Lowrance HDS and Structure Scan have been around for a while I thought I'd get the thoughts of those who have and use it.
Was it worth the $$$?
Who has used it offshore to find reef or structure? How deep?
I'm thinking with the $$$ I've spent on my boat and electronics if it is worth getting the Structure Scan tranny and finishing off the package.
Honest thoughts, good or bad appreciated.
Cheers

Quintrex trailer bearings?
Submitted by scano on Tue, 2011-04-26 11:34Hi Everyone,
I am going to replace the wheel bearings on my Quintrex / Telwater trailer next weekend. The trailer model is a TEL46 and the boat that sits on the trailer is a Quintrex 435 Coast Runner (2007 model). My question is does anyone know what bearings these normally run?
That way i can buy the bearings and seals before I pull it all apart next weekend.
The trailer has square axle's and 5 stud 13 inch rims fitted.
I had a quick look using the search function but didn't seem to have much luck
any info would be appreciated

Boat Trailer
Submitted by Mark M on Mon, 2011-04-25 13:37Hi All,
Looking at a trailer which weighs 420kg for a Whittley Sea Legend which fully loaded is just on 2 tonne and have a few questions,
1) If the boat and trailer come in under the 2.5 tonne it will not need electric over hydraulic brakes
2) Will the trailer need to have brakes on all wheels being over 2 tonne
Any advice would be appreciated

2wd boat launching from lancelin
Submitted by Reefmonkey on Sat, 2011-04-23 18:36Anyone have any expirience and advice on launching a 4.2m tinny at lancelin with a front wheel drive magna. checked out the beach last time i was up there and sand was solid as, only thing is never beach launched with a two wheel drive... do it or don't?
Boat is only 200kg or so, so I'm thinkin we shouldn't need to get the trailer submerged and winch the boat up with a little lift if needed, and FWD will pull it out easier with the driving wheels not in wet soft sand, yea?
Have memories as a kid launching the old 15ft sea rider with the old man and our old 1979 sigma with waves up and into the boot.
Just need to get out to lancelin island for some photo's for a project

US Boats
Submitted by mrwinta on Sat, 2011-04-23 00:06At this stage I am only thinking about it but I have been looking at getting a boat from the US for the obvious reason... Cheapness... With the strong AU$ you realy can get some great deals... A mate I work with, at the end of last year, boutgt a 2009 Boston Whaler Outrage 23 foot (approx) with all the fruit, and had it shipped over, total cost inc taxes, delivery, purchace and the cost to fly to florida and test the boat was just under 70K.... over in Victoria where he lives, the same boat is 110k +.....
I have been looking at boats in the 24-26 foot catagory first I thought about getting a centre console but now I think I will go for a walk arround as I should really take the wife and daughter in to consideration too. I had been favoring the Seafox but they do get a bashing on forums etc but they do look great and have stacks of extras... I also realy like the Seaswirl 2601 WA with the Targa style top but they too seem to get a bit of a bashing from the yanks...
My budget will be about 40k so to allow aprox 10k for taxes and delivery, at least thats what I am guessing it will cost, and would like to get something around 5 years old or newer with a trailer.
Does any one have any advice with this or genuine oppinions on the mentioned boats, or sugestions of other boats to look at... does any one know what they ride like in moderate chop? Also whats the go with the trailers from the US, is it as simple as putting them over the pits or not???
Seaswirl
Seafox

Mercury 50hp stroke behaviour
Submitted by gibbs on Thu, 2011-04-21 00:27G'day folks, new to the forum this is my first post.
I recently bought my first boat a '07' Bermuda 450 with a 2 stroke 50hp Mercury on the back. It's now done 21 hours and due for it's 1st service.
Now this engine starts quite well with a couple of pumps of the primer but she is so bloody lazy when she first gets going and also a bit smokey. By lazy i mean i give it some throttle and it will creep up to the desired rev range in minutes rather then instantly. I can't give her full throttle early coz she just won't do it, she's a lazy bitch. No problems when in idle and she has never conked out or coughed. Once she has had a run she will drive like normal even if i pull up somewhere and turn her off for a few hours. When i start her back up she can hit top speed no worries, it's just when she goes in the first time.
Is it normal for a 2 stroke to need warming up and act a bit sluggish?

Furuno 585 to Lowrance HDS over nmea0183
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Tue, 2011-04-12 06:23Hey all
Has anyone actually seen a Furuno 585 and a Lowrance HDS10 talking to each other over nmea0183?
I have wired mine and the 585 is now receiving GPS input but it will not talk back to the HDS so the waypoint shows up on the plotter, as per the instructions here:
http://fishwrecked.com/forum/gps-combo-or-stand-alone
Has anyone got this working and can help as I tried most settings and it is doing my head in.
Cheers

Rope For Electric Anchor Winch
Submitted by Mulie on Wed, 2011-04-06 17:46Hello, thought a few of you might be able to help me out. I bought a 2nd hand 6m glassy with an electric winch on it. I think it has the wrong type of rope on it (12mm silver) as the winch will not pull the rope unless I help it through (it just spins on the rope). Any ideas?

Seacat 510
Submitted by eddie on Tue, 2011-04-05 16:36Hey boys,
I'm checking into getting a fishing boat in the next year or so. Mate of mine sent me the following link and said if he was in the market, this is what he would be getting. I value his advice as he has lived/fished/boated off WA for 40 years.
http://recreationalboatingwa.com.au/news-detail.asp?iNewsID=353
I thought I would ask if any of y'all have been in one of these tubs, or if you know anything about them. They look the goods, but would love and knowledge you have to share with me.
cheers!

Anyone want to service my Merc outboard or know a cheap mechanic?
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2011-04-05 10:43Last weekend I purchased all the parts to service my 1998 90hp Merc outboard.
I had planned to do the service over last weekend, but ended up having to work the whole weekend. It is looking like that is likely to happen again this weekend.
Next weekend is my last weekend before Exxy, so I am concerned I wont get the service done in time.
Is anyone (who knows what they are doing) keen to do the service? Obviously happy to pay. If nobody on here, can anyone recommend a cheap outboard mechanic?
I know how easy the service is to do so really dont want to pay the king's ransom that some mechanics are asking, but im not sure I will have time to do it myself.
The boat is in Como, so ideally someone would do it there.
Cheers

sounders
Submitted by roganjosh on Tue, 2011-04-05 06:23
Hi Everyone,
I have a question regarding sounders and GPS bought from overseas ( USA ebay ). The US dollar is too good not to miss out on. Does anyone know if you buy a sounder or GPS from the states if they are the same and will work down under. My guess is a sounder would work fine but with a GPS the base map would be set for the US. Also if you were to buy a Gold card from here and put into a US GPS would the Card override the preset US maps?.
Any help would be appreciated.

Kids life jackets...
Submitted by MattG on Sun, 2011-04-03 19:47I'm about to buy my girl her first life jacket.
I thought I'd canvass opinion on what people were using and their likes/dislikes.
My only prerequisite is that it has to be PFD Type 1. My girl is 11kg.
So, what do your kids wear?

bleeding dual axle trailer brakes
Submitted by grayzeee on Sun, 2011-04-03 10:51couple of questions
went and did the wheel bearings on my trailer the other day, only to find (a can of worms) the front left caliper in need of seals and some quite uneven wear on the 4 discs. the rear axle seems to have been dragging the brakes, overheating discs and pads.
removed that caliper and plugged the line.
is it just a case of bolting back on the caliper and bleeding just that one??
what can be done about the uneven brake wear???
the rigid brake lines are looking in pretty poor condition too, though it's surface rust, i'll swap them out next time for flexi ones.
just wondering, as i'm not too mechanically minded , in what order you'd bleed the 4 calipers ???
al ko brakes with hydrastar elec system if that would matter

Another "donk won't start"
Submitted by saltydog on Sat, 2011-04-02 14:52Mercury 40hp 1989 model.
Battery fully charged
New fuel bulb.
New fuel.
Bugger just won't kick over.
Plus the primer bulb didn't seem to get hard.
So the following week when I had some time, went and purchased new plugs
and put them in.
With the cowl off and priming the bulb (this time the bulb firmed up after about 10 compressions)
Had a squize at the carbs to see if the butterly's were closed, I noticed fuel basically squirting out of
what I think is the economiser jet located front of carb upper RHS corner.
After fuel had leaked out of here and into the chamber she kicked over
but died within seconds!
Tried again and same thing.
So I gather I need to put a kit through the carbs.
And what would this cost to get it done?
Anyone have any thoughts.
cheers

Whittley 1750 Clearwater
Submitted by scere_182 on Wed, 2011-03-30 13:28Gday Gday!
I'm in the market for my first boat and have my eye on the whittley 1750 of the clearwater range.
Just like to know if anyone has owned one before and could spare a few opinions on positives and negatives with them.
Or things i should look out for in general when purchasing a used boat in this size etc.
Never owned a boat before but finally deciding to get rid of the jetski and get a more useful watercraft.
If you have another option in the 30k+ price range you'd recommend i'd be happy to hear it also.
Cheers in Advance.

Gel Coat Restoration?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Tue, 2011-03-29 12:07Hi All,
"Dreamweaver's gel coat is suffering a bit from UV exposure and I'm looking at good info on the best way to approach the gelcoat restoration.
There is quite a build up of 'chalky' oxidisation and any amount of various cutting polishes and subsequent applications of waxes just aren't giving the best result I'm after. Being a cuddy cab, it has a large foredeck that has gone quite 'flat' as appearance goes.
I'm no expert in restoration of FRP/FG, hence this post, but, after browsing through a number of sites/pages/blogs etc, there seems to be two ways to go - the traditional de-oxyginisation, polishing and waxing and the new polymer coating technique with products like Vertglas and Polyglow.
On the latter, some folk swear by it and others won't touch it with a bargepole.
It's been suggested that I start off using MEK or acetone to degrease the surface, a dewax solvent or tolurene to remove the previously applied wax then polish buffing and a follow up of wax.
Ok, now down to products - which is best? Maquires gets a good wrap, Sepetone doesn't (I've tried the latter with poor resuts).
Finally, previous attempts have been by hand. Some folk I have talked to is that 'by hand', though much harder work gives a better result - others swear by using a proper electric buffer (not attachments to drills etc).
OK, over to you, lots of areas to cover there. I'm all ears and very grateful in advance for your helpful and knowledgeable advice.
