Help with installing in hull transducer
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Wed, 2011-02-02 16:26Hey guys
I plan on installing a 1kw in hull transducer soon and there seems to be some debate on what liquid people use to fill the tank.
I've heard everything from distilled water to cooking oil to anti freeze coolant.
Who has had one or installed one themselves and what did you use?
Thanks
Tim

carrying extra fuel
Submitted by CCC on Fri, 2011-01-28 22:46Hi
Planning a big trip in the boat (5.8 centre console) and will need to double the fuel capacity by carrying an extra 180Ls fuel. At the moment the plan is to carry 9x 20L plastic jerry cans.
How do you carry extra fuel? Any smarter/safer ideas out there. The boat's a 5.8 centre console.
How do you decant the fuel into main tank
Thanks in advance

How likely to make a warranty claim on a new outboard?
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2011-01-28 21:01Hi guys
If you had to choose between 2 brand new engines, a 130 etec with a 5 year warrantly or a brand new Suzuki 150 4 stroke with no warranty (from the US), which would you go for?
If they were both local engines and the same price I would jump on the Suzuki without hesitation.
They are both the same price. Would you take the gamble and go for the 150 Suzuki?
Cheers

Oxidation - Cut and Polish help
Submitted by Borbs on Fri, 2011-01-28 16:36Need help re polishing fibregalss boat.
Boat sat for a few years up north in the sun and has heavy oxidation (boat is dark blue). Have tried to cut and polish with several brands, it seems the polish just gets absorbed into the surface and results in extensive swirls - tried by hand and machine. I don'tpolish in the heat or direct sunlight.
Trying get boat up to specs to get back on the water.
Any tips appreciated.

GPS /Fishfinder dillema
Submitted by iana on Thu, 2011-01-27 17:36I have a Navman GPS mounted in my boat 6" screen, and a 4" grey scale fish finder mounted tempory until I can afford a better unit. I happened to mention to my Bro inlaw that my fish finder was crap. Come my 60th birthday and I get given this. Its a Lowrance LCX112C I have mounted it on the dash of the boat, and it looks a bit oversize. Its something that would be fitted to a 40 ft fishing boat. The equivalant is the HDS10. I have a 5.5 m Baron, I have to look over it to see where I'm going. I am findingthe thought of undoing all the wiring I have just done, the fitting, net working etc etc a bit daunting.
Should I
1/ fit this unit and to hell with the way it looks, to hell with the extra work. or-
2/ trade or sell this unit and just buy a smaller fish finder to sit along side my Navman 6500? and have less work or worry?
And no I won't get someone else to wire it up, cant afford it.
What is your opinon.

Submitted by gregrobo on Wed, 2011-01-26 16:19hey guys bought a baron before christmas it was in a bit of a mess hasnt seen water for 5 years that i know of looking for some info on the hull and what sort of capacity engine it may handle at the moment it has a 6 cylinder blue band merc on it that runs pretty well, i have just put a kit thru the carbs, and just resined a new gunwale rubber around the whole hull and cut and polished it ready for easter.
these are before we started working on it

One cable is the positive & negative power cable (what does the yellow wake-up wire do) and the other cable is the data cable with yellow, blue, orange and green what do these connect to? the shield (ground wire) does this ground to the hull of the boat or to a common earth wire?

Radio Problems
Submitted by Percula on Mon, 2011-01-24 09:10Hey All
I need some help with the radio in my old mans boat.
He originally had one in there, but it hasn't worked for a while. Power to it but its always just static and can't here anyone talking etc
So I thought it had just past its used by date, and time for a new one.
So bought a new one, put it in, headed out and seemed to be working fine. Here everyone etc etc
But, I turned the sounder on, and the radio went all statically (word?) so I just thought it was interference, and turned the radio off (was only in the harbour).
Anyway later on turned the sounder off and the radio back on, but still all I get is static!! So I am worried now that its not the radio at all!
The sounder/radio are run off different wiring, but not sure if they hook up to the same battery or not (haven't checked yet) and there is the 4 way switch (1/2/both/off) but this isn't connected to the accessories, so thinking the accesories are connected straight to the batteries.
Surely I haven't stuffed the radio from turning the sounder on? I will check to see if they are running of different batteries, but surely this isn't the problem??
Any ideas greatly appreciated??

Where to Buy QL Trim Tabs?
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Fri, 2011-01-21 13:18Hey gang
I've been searching the 'net for a Aussie seller of QL Trim Tabs and only US sites come up. While they are cheaper the $200 or so they want for postage doesn't make them so cheap anymore.
Has anyone here bought some and from where?
Or does anyone have a set for sale? My boat will take the 450 but the 300's will suit a bit better I think.
Cheers

Oils aint Oils
Submitted by Terry on Wed, 2011-01-19 16:57Gday
I have a Mariner Optimax outboard motor and have been using the recommended brand name oil in it.
The oil is quiet expensive as you may know.
I was wondering what other oils ( shell, caltex etc) of the same grade , you may be using in your Optimax engines.
Cheers

Boat Trailer Rollers
Submitted by bowds on Tue, 2011-01-18 09:49I need some new rollers for my trailer as some have either fallen off or been knicked.
Just wondering 1) where is a good place to get a good price on rollers? 2) What is the go in regards to bringing your boat there? Do you just buy them and install them yourselves at home or do you bring your boat in and they do it for you?
I think I need 4 new rollers.

trailer setup for fibreglass boat
Submitted by axl100 on Sat, 2011-01-15 16:48
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the setup of my trailer. I find that when I retrieve my boat it can be a bit of a bitch to get it square on the trailer and sometimes it don't sit right. I don't know if the cotton reel rollers are right or the skids. I have 4 cotton reel rollers in the middle and the hull sits on 3 of them. At the rear there is a skid each side and some wobbles.

Fishing Accident, Boat Insurance
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2011-01-15 13:26Damn it. Great trip out to get home and discover that your favourite overhead/rod combo is mising in action. Blown off the Rocket launcher, bumped off, stolen at the ramp etc dont know. What is known is it was on the boat and now the Twin speed Saltist (brand new) and 8-10kg Diawa Monster Mesh (brand new) is not home with us.
Certainly wasnt lost in action because it wasnt used that particular trip, but it was there to complete the "Golf Bag".
Does anyone know if an incident etc is claimable with top cover with Club Marine. This combo was $1G plus.
Pissed off to say the least.

Hydrofoils for outboards
Submitted by diver albie on Fri, 2011-01-14 19:08OK, I've asked boat shops, Whitworths and guys at boat ramps and never seem to get two answers that match so I decided that the answer is to go straight to the source of all knowledge, the internet.
Has anyone fitted hydrofoils to their boat and do they work??? I have a 4.7m Pacemaker with a Johnson 70 on the back and to be honest it goes well. But the number of people who tell me to fit foils to it to make it plane faster, stay there at lower RPM and save fuel not to mention it will be more stable at anchor is amazing. However I get the odd negative as well, Hayway Marine actually went as far as to say it would make the boat dangerous and unstable.
So come one, come all give me real life examples, pleeeeease.

How fast do you travel in your boat off Perth
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2011-01-14 10:44Hey guys
You read on alot of forums that guys wont put an engine on a boat unless it can do 40 knots. I have found that off Perth and the West Coast (southern half) you normally cant do more than about 25 knots without having a really uncomfortable ride.
As I am looking for the right motor for my new boat (575 Cruisecraft Outsider) I was seeking some input on what sort of top speed is acceptable.
Sure, you occasionally get the glass off's when you can sit on 40 knots but would you consider 32 knots as too slow to expect as a maximum speed.
I am considering fitting a 130 Etec reckon I'll get around 34 to 36 knots out of it on a good day. What is your opinion.
Cheers

stabilisers for dinghies
Submitted by fishnut on Wed, 2011-01-12 11:19I've heard a few reports of dinghies tipping recently so, I thought these are an excellent idea and thought it was worth sticking them on here. Better still, they are made locally. There are some other inflatable ones made over east, but these are polystyrene - no punctures!
