Nico,s boat rebuild thread part 2
Submitted by nico on Tue, 2011-09-06 19:18Well it has been a slow process with this crap weather we built the pod mould out of 17 mm malamine brushed in the gelcoat a few weeks back ,tie layered it with 600 csm then a few more layers later in the week . once this was done layed in the stitched cloth x2 and moe csm then cut out the ply for the trany pulled it back on wet glass and glassed over the top next step was fit three 15 mm stringers glass them in and right angle to support the pod top.Released the pod and then glassed it on to the hull with 9 layers and through bolts which will be done later in the week. 15 mm floors been cut out and glassed both sides with csm .A bowsprit mould was made and now finished with the same materials as the pod it should be able to with stand some punishment.
I was a bit suss on the stringer system so have layed 600 csm x2 and stitched cloth through the hull and up the sides of the glass stringer system this has stiffened the hull up and will be rock solid .Plans have changed as we are keen to be in the water for christmas and get in some good fishing over summer so scratched the wave braker idea and eskies for now so we can get out on the wate rand will do those next winter. Floors should go in this weekend with 1 layer over the top of csm and 2 strips extra around the edges one a stitch cloth i have seen to many boats floors crack and delaminate in this area from hard conditions and not enough material being layed down . the windscreen is having new tinted perspex cut as we speak and now making the pod top which should be done in two weeks .the glass fuel tank will be last with Vinylester resin and powder bound cloth will keep you posted on that one as it progressesi will have to stop for acouple of weeks as i am flying home to cairns for a break and a dose of Black Marlin fishig and any other species i can bag on the way tight lines boys the count down is on 10 days to go.

Trophy Walk Around.
Submitted by hamo on Sun, 2011-09-04 21:15Alright, this is a kinda of ' is this what I want ' thread -
Can anyone offer any information on what it's like to own a Trophy boat ? I've looked at a 2102 walk around and am getting the feeling it's the right boat for me, It ticks quite a few of the boxes that I require it too. The kind of info I'm trying to find is with regards to how they ride, The hulls look the goods but do they hold thier own in the rough stuff ? They're ( I presume ) a heavy vessel, do they need a bit of grunt behind them to get them going ? ( IE: Do I NEED 200hp on the back or will 150 do the job ? ) Any common problems ?
I'm looking at upgrading from a 5 metre plate boat, which realistically doesn't ride so well, but is so well put together it just soaks up any punishment you throw at it and asks for more. It's got a 90hp on it and has no problem doing 28-30 knts on a smooth day with 4 on board. It's a great little boat but I'm looking to go wider, and take extended trips away and as good as it is I would'nt be comfortable doing a trip to the Montes in it.
So is there anything I'm not taking into consideration that I should be ?
Thanks in advance guys
Adrian

Polycraft
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Sun, 2011-09-04 13:22Hi guys
Have been checking out the Polycraft plastic boats, mainly the 3m Tuff Tender or the 4.1m. Are these boats in general any good? Does anyone on here have one, and how do they ride? I've heard that they absorb up the bumps and ride really well?
Cheers Ben

Mercury Problems
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Wed, 2011-08-31 15:24Hey guys
I have a 3.9m runabout with forward steer and a 30hp merc
Whenever i run for about 15 minutes at about 70% speed, it starts to cut out and choke a bit, with the boat going forward fast, the stopping suddenly. It seems like there is not enough petrol going to the engine. it is fine at low speeds say under 6 knots. It is a newish 2006 2 stroke model. I have also put a fuel filter on it, and it has been serviced just last week.
Any suggestions to why or how this is happening?
Much appreciated

Advice on getting boat checked over
Submitted by joycey on Tue, 2011-08-30 21:36Hi guys,
Will be looking at buying a used fibreglass trailerboat in the 5-5.5m size soon and want to get both the boat and outboard checked before making a purchase.
Can anyone recommend a boat surveyor for assessing the boat and a marine mechanic to check the outboard in the Perth area.
Cheers,
Michael.

Stormy PFD
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2011-08-30 06:33Bloody hell had a nasty nightmare. Thought I lost the Mrs overboard and some may say thats a blessing, but I have always thought about wearing a PFD. Can anyone point me into the right choice for a light PFD. I was looking at the
ISO180N Premium Yokebut it looks bulky. What are the Yakers using.
By the way Above the 26th Para showed how much fun this could be and well worth it from $15 postage and handling included.

formosa tomahawks
Submitted by scotto on Sat, 2011-08-20 08:26anyone got any good or bad feedback on the formosa tomahawks?? namely the 580 half cab.
the old man is thinking about getting one, and i havent heard much on them at all. they look pretty good, and seem well priced, but if anyone that owns or has ridden in one has got some opinons, that would be helpful too. apparantly the 580 is over 6m L.O.A, does anyone know if this is correct?
a decent sea-trial should also put any doubts to rest too.... i might organise one soon.

Savage Tasman and CoxCraft RumRunner advice please.
Submitted by joycey on Fri, 2011-08-19 23:42Hi guys,
Looking to get into my first boat, looking at used boats.
I don't want to go over 5.5m in boat size and prefer glass boats.
A couple of boats that interest me and are currently on the used market locally are late models of the :
- Savage Tasman 5.2m Cuddy Cab
- Coxcraft RumRunner 5.4m Cuddy Cab
Both in the 20-30k range.
I'd be really grateful for any advice from those who have any knowledge/experience of these boats and what conditions they are suited to.
Hoping on the right days to get out to Rottnest once I've gained experience inshore.
Thanks,
Joycey

560 Barcrusher and 100HP
Submitted by Tandawg on Mon, 2011-08-15 19:58Hi all, I am in the market for a Barcrusher 560. The boat is rated from 115HP but there is one reasonably priced with a 100 Yammy 4 stroke. Is there anyone out there with a 560/100HP combo who could give me the heads up, or even 560/115HP (which is a common combo).
Thanks in advance

Preston Craft boats
Submitted by Trevor C on Mon, 2011-08-15 10:41Hi all.
Im looking at buying a new or near new 7.5 - 8m aluminium boat.I have got a shortlist of builders in mind with Preston Craft currently at the top of my list.I have been out in a mates 7.5m Thunderbolt and was most impressed with the ride and quality of the build.I visited the Preston Craft factory last week to view any boats under construction to have a look at the workmanship before painting and again was impressed with the construction and professional attitude Greg Preston has towards his workmanship.I also viewed a 8m Mirage tri hull which Kevin has in his fit out shed - this will be one special boat when complete! They have a second hand 7.5m demo boat up for sale which I am keen on - will be fitted with a brand new engine.
Can anyone recommend any other builder to have a look at before I make my final decision in a few weeks time?
Thanks

How do I launch my boat onto the back lawn??
Submitted by r.gates on Fri, 2011-08-12 12:43Hi guys
I've got to take the boat trailer back to the manufacturer for some warranty repairs and he only wants the trailer. I've been trying to find someone locally who lives on a canal or has a pen that I can tie the boat up to, for a couple of days.
It was suggested that I drop the boat onto the back lawn....it's real easy, apparently.
Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing and if so, I'd appreciate a few pointers on what to do. I can imagine getting it off the trailer might be the easy bit, but there would be nothing worse than not being able to get the Trailblazer back onto the trailer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
regards
rusty...

Glass boat repairs
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2011-08-11 14:55Just wondering if anyone has done minor gel-coat repairs before?
Ive got a couple marks ont he boat (mainly ones there before i bought it) which I'd like to touch up.
Anyone know where you can get a small amount of Gel coat? i wouldnt need anymore than 500ml.
Also how to apply it?
The small spots that need repairing are only through the gelcoat not into the glass itself.
It is a white hull.
Cheers

removable Bench seat
Submitted by Blacky on Wed, 2011-08-10 17:19Hey lads,
Now i don't have a picture of the seat im after however i saw one on a Hookam Dominator a few days ago.
I will do my best to explain them and basically im trying to find out where to buy one.
They are a pull in/out seat
They use two mounting plates on a vertical surface. (Seat must have metal tabs that slide into these mounts at the rear)
It then has legs that flip down to give support on the deck.
In the dominators case the metal brackets were on the battery access cabnets.
Any ideas? very keen to find one.

Memorising fuel use Gauges etc
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2011-08-09 15:47Just changes the Johno 2S 115 to a ETEC 115.
Now I use to be up with technology etc when I organised Rally Oz, but times a changing.
I have a wee little problem with the new gauges on the boat, and dont want to bother the marine guys up here to much if there is a simple fix.
I have a memory stick that plugs in series at the back of the dash, this setup I havent seen before, and if it is confusing I will get a pic when at home.
Compared with the old Johno the data is fantastic with fuel flow, oil level etc. The problem I have is when we stop to fish it looses its memory. But Not all the time.
Anyone got any ideas as to why. I do run a twin battery setup, and I have had the boat about 2.5 yrs, and prior to that it had 98hrs on the clock (with the Johno). Could it be that the batteries are just getting old.
Safety first and if I thought that was the case I would change them in a flash.
I know it sounds confusing, but thats just my untechno mind speaking.

Progress on boat fix up
Submitted by grantarctic1 on Sat, 2011-08-06 21:42Hi crew, I managed to get one job out of the way that i wasn't looking forward to . Removing the carpet and glue from the hull. Sorry to say i found no easy way to do this exept rip into it. I pulled all the carpet up to find lots glue and parts of carpet stuck to the deck.
The only thing to do was use paint scrapers followed buy the grinder with a wire cup brush.
Many hours later and a bucket full of paint and glue scrapings it was looking a bit better.
I removed the seat box and floor plate to inspect the fuel tank . Not a pretty site, Oily water and dark stains on the tank and inside the hull.
Also note the cables from the console on the floor. This had a cover over the top and i have tripped over it a few times already, so i will be organizing these under the floor with a removable cover to access them if needed.
With the tank removed i cleaned out the area as much as posible.
Now i have a problem, The fuel tank has worn underneath from sitting on the stringers in the hull. Over all its not too bad but there is a repair on the tank ( resin ) and i am thinking of just making a new tank for peace of mind.
The repair on the bottom of the tank
What i started to wonder was should i go with aluminium again or should i make it out of stainless steel ?
Has anyone ever had problems with stainless ? I have heard of issues with cracking.
Cheers Grant.

Non stick Ali boat cleaning
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2011-08-06 17:44ANyone have some clever idea to get the Pilbara dirt out of the non skid areas, especially the front of the boat. Up here everything stains, and I know I should have a boat cover, which I have a canvas one, but we are always out fishing, and its a huge job putting it on and off every weekend.

Water in fuel tank help
Submitted by Kingfisher549 on Mon, 2011-08-01 20:45Boat motor ran rough coming in last week and found water in the fuel filter. I have changed the filter, removed the top of the fuel tank and pumped fuel from the bottom of the tank. Covered the fuel inlet and checked the seal. Also added a fuel additive to remove any water. Is there anything else I should try. Unfortunately the boat is out in the open until my new shed is built in about six weeks. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
