Tuna off Ocean Reef

Travelling from Hillarys to Mindarie on the rescue boat and came across a number of schools of Tuna busting up baitfish bigtime. Were only a mile offshore near the North Lumps.

Ross Greenwood of Money News

as quoted from: Ross Greenwood of Money News..

Right now the Federal Government is at pains to tell everyone - including us the mug-punters and the International Monetary Fund, that it will not exceed its own, self-imposed, borrowing limits.

How much?    $200 billion.   And here's a worry.

If you work in a bank's money market operation; or if you are a politician; the millions turn into billions and it rolls off the tip of the tongue a bit too easily. but every dollar that is borrowed, some time, has to be repaid. By you, by me and by the rest of the country.

Just after 5 o'clock last night I did a bit of math for Jason Morrison ( Sydney radio presenter). But it's so staggering its worth repeating now.

First thought; Gillard, Swan, Wong, before that Rudd, all of the Labor Cabinet, call these temporary borrowings, a temporary deficit.

Remember Those Words "temporary deficit".

The Total Government debt will end up around $200 billion.

So here's a very basic calculation  .. I used a home loan calculator to work it out..... it's that simple….$200 billion is…. Two Hundred Thousand Million Dollars.

The current 10 year Government bond rate is 4.67 per cent. I worked the loan out over a period of 20 years. Now here's where it gets scary .... really scary.

The repayments on $200 billion, come to more than one and a quarter billion dollars - every month - for 20 years.

It works out we - as taxpayers - will be repaying $15.4 billion in interest and principal every year .. $733 for every man woman and child - every year for 20 years.

The total interest bill over the 20 years is - get this - $108 billion.

Remember, this is a Government, that just 4 years ago, had NO debt…….. NO Debt!

In fact it had enough money to create the Future Fund, to pay the future liabilities of public servants' superannuation, and it had enough to stick $20 billion into the Building Australia Fund .....

A note was sent to me which explains that the six leading members of the Government, from Ms Gillard down, have a collective work experience of 181 years, but only 13 years in the private sector.

If you take out of those 13 years, the number that were spent as trade union lawyers, 11, only two years were spent in the private sector.

So out of those 181 years of experience brought by the current Labor Government:

- no years spent running their own business
- no years spent starting their own business
- no years spent as a director of a family business or a company
- no years as a director of a public company
- no years in a senior position in a public company
- no years in a senior position in a private company
- no years working in corporate finance
- no years in corporate or business restructuring
- no years working in or with a bank
- no years of experience in the capital markets
- no years in a stock-broking firm
- no years in negotiating debt facilities with banks
- no years running a small business
- no years at the World Bank or IMF or OECD
- no years in Treasury or Finance.

And it is these people who have plunged Australia into unprecedented debt.

Well, as they say, we get the politicians we deserve, so in a way you can't blame them.

It's clear the electorate did not do their homework, because the Government is there by right.

Ah, but they are Labor, and people vote for them because Labor is good for the working family - right???

Seafood retailer fined $41,000 for black market trades

A 50 year old Leeming man has been ordered to pay fines, mandatory penalties and costs totalling more than $41,000, after pleading guilty to black market seafood trades yesterday.

Perth Magistrates Court heard that Allan Ng SHEK, the owner/manager of Westfield Carousel Seafood Market, was one of a number of people and organisations caught dealing in black market fish, during a controlled Department of Fisheries’ operation.

The department’s compliance operation, code-named Cosmos, began in October 2010.

Shek was fined a total of $7,500 on three counts of contravening Section 74 of the Fish Resources Management Act, by purchasing fish from a person who was not the holder of a commercial fishing licence. He was also fined $2,500 for unlicensed processing.

In addition, the seafood retailer will have to pay mandatory penalties of $30,381 related to fish involved in the offences, plus court costs of $649.70.

The court was told that on Tuesday 9 November 2010, Shek was observed in a car park adjacent to Carousel Shopping Centre purchasing 30.47 kilograms of mixed demersal scalefish fillets for $460. Ten days later he was seen paying $520 in cash for 46 western rock lobsters. On Friday 26 November, the offender purchased a further 45 western rock lobsters for $500 cash.

After Fisheries’ compliance officers inspected his Westfield Carousel Seafood Market retail outlet in August last year (2011), Shek admitted to processing rock lobster without a licence.

In response to yesterday’s court outcome, Department of Fisheries’ Compliance and Regional Support Manager Phil Shaw said the monetary penalties handed down provided a clear message that black market seafood trading was not acceptable and that offenders could expect big fines.

“With Operation Cosmos that focussed on illegal trading in rock lobster and Operation Dorado, which targeted unlawful transactions for high value demersal scalefish by individuals and businesses, including restaurants and seafood outlets, the department is committed to wiping out black market seafood trading in WA,” Mr Shaw said.

“Buying seafood legally is vital to ensuring our State’s sustainability standards are met.”

Anyone who suspects illegal fishing activity is taking place is asked to call the FISHWATCH reporting line on 1800 815 507.

Stolen Reels 13/02/2012

A good friend of mine had his house broken into on Tuesday 13/03/2012 between 9.30 am to 9pm and got some of his quality gear stolen in the Mullaloo area.

The gear was a Accurate ATD30 (serial number 5530) and a Saltiga Dogfight 6500 (serial number 58964) see attached photos. There are some low life scumbags out there at the moment and we are getting more and more people coming in to our store with boats, jet skis, sounders etc being stolen so just look out.

If you hear of any cheap high end gear going cheap then please let me know my mate is absolutely gutted as he just got the 2 new reels for a upcoming Exmouth trip.

The Dogfight has Daiwa Tournament 80lb Braid on it and the Accurate has Black Magic 24kg Mono

A reward will be offered for any info leading to the return of these reels.

Phone me anytime on 9309 4200 or 0419929116 or email stevehart@westernangler.com.au

Cheers Guys

Construction and Mining

I'm sure a fair few FW members work either in the construction or mining industries. Interested to hear from everyone if you agree/disagree with the massive increase in WA over the last ten odd years? Alot of multi national companies extracting our resources and the profits disappear overseas. FIFO workers putting pressure on local fishing, anti social behaviour.                 Ktown has a big influcts of workers, some FIFO others move into town for a few years then take off with a bag full of coin. These companies do invest a lot of money into our local communities and local industry (Australia wide). This will happen in Broome in a couple of years.

What will happen when our natural resources run out? (might not be in my life time) or like Ravensthorpe just pull out because not enough profit. The towns that boomed for many years will crash and a lot of people will be left with a debt or no work

I work in the construction industry and closed my small business down to do so (housing industry went down hill).

Rescue mission

Got a phone call at around 10 last night from a doctor at the local hospital asking if it was at all possible for us at sea rescue to go out and pick up a deckie of a prawn trawler who had a suspected heart attack. The trawler was then about 15nm NW of Carnarvon and making its way in at 6 knots with a 2-2.5 metre lovely short sharp chop and 25 knot winds.

We got away at 11 and met them around 10nm NW, managed to get him off on our second attempt by sticking the nose of the niaid in on his port stern behind the trawl booms long enough for the deckies on both boats to pass him over. Not a nice task when you have the stern of a steel trawler about 2 metres high rising and falling some 2 metres and you've only got about 3 metres of room to stick the side of the bow against, its not something we practice doing in daylight let alone at midnight with limited visiblity.

Took us about an hour to get back in to port and off to hospital with a rather uncomfortable ride home with quite a few very sharp landings that anyone who has fished in the seas up here will never forget. By the time we'd got him away and the boat back in its air berth it was nearly 0200, one can think of better ways to spend time at but with two good deckies to help it was a successful trip.

Rang the hospital this morning to find he's in a stable condition and will be staying in for 4-5 days, good news considering he didn't look to crash hot when we got him in.

Grandad Mc's Farm Video

Here is a film I have put together of my summer spent on my Grandad Mc's farm. It's located on the Wilson inlet and he farms the whole place by himself. He is an inspiration to everyone that knows him and shows no sign of slowing down.

We celebrated his 80th birthday in Albany this last weekend and I showed it to everyone there.

Let me know what you think and name the river at the end of it.

engine repair or replace with reconditioned engine?

So the timing belt on my pajero failed. When I got it a few months ago I was assured it had been replaced at 95k and had the major service done. There was a sticker indicating this was the case.

Anyway, I fell for it and now I have to deal with the consequences. My mechanic is quoting $3k+ to repair the current engine which has done 140,000km. He also suggested calling around wreckers for a replacement engine. Not too sure about the wreckers option, the replacement engine may have its own issues.

I have been quoted $3,800 for a reconditioned engine including fitting from another place.

I don't know much about these things so I thought I would ask. Anyone had a replacement reconditioned engine fitted before?

Any advice?

Cheers

Fishwrecked exmouth comp weather updates?

Hi everyone,

just a few quick questions if I may?

Bodie, myself and 6 other mates have planned to head north to exmouth as of 11 days from now for about 10 days duration. Just wondering what everyones thoughts were weather wise?

what's everyones predictions about the tropical low hanging off the west coast?

Cyclone, just a teaser, cat 2?

also for a non local to the north west what is the fishing like directly after a cyclone?

So basically worst case scenario if this tropical low does hit exmouth some time mid next week, does the fishing basicaly shut down for the next few weeks or what?

Not to sound ungrateful and I wish all of the locals a safe and painless time wherever this tropical low passes but just wondering on what the fishing would be like in exmouth for the FW comp should a cyclone hit mid next week?

As alot of you will know we have invested alot of time, money and effort into planning the trip and without sounding like a spoiled sport we are praying for good weather and fishing conditions.

thanks for your time reading and post your feedback if possible

cheers

NW Coastal hwy report.

Just arrived back here in Cvon after a fortnight or so down in the big smoke with the missus for medical tests and noticed a huge increase of dead roos etc from around Wooramel roadhouse to about 40km north compared with what we saw on the way down.

Suggest that its starting to dry out and food is getting scarce so they come in to feed on the green grass on the road side.

For all those planning on a northern trip please keep an eye out for roos, goats etc  round Wooramel plus for cattle about 30-40km south of Cvon.

EShed slimy's

Took the kids to the Eshed Jetty last night to try our luck with the mackerel. This was the first time i had done this. With a few trips up North coming up, we thought it was a good idea to get some bait. Arrived at 6pm with the two boys and a mate who also has two boys. First job was to make sure none of the litte tackers fell off the jetty. Youngest 6 oldest 9. We had no real expectations. Got the kids rods sorted with the customary rigs, through out a bit of pollard and tuna oil and before we knew it the kids were hauling in double and triple headers. I would say it is the most fun they have had for a long time. Great night had by all. I was a bit confused with two people throwing a net off the jetty. A few guys on the jetty thought it was a $10,000 fine. Another of those rules i am not too sure on.

We kept 80 which were put on ice in the 27litre until late this afternoon. Then the job of vac sealing was on. I had know idea so much blood was going to come out of them. The Eva pac did a great job with so much moisture. I was quite surprised.

We had a great night catching the bait and now have 80 vac packed slimy's ready for the trips North.

What a great thing to do with the kids. We will be back soon. I would be interested to know how some of you kill them. Do you just put them in your buckets, on ice or kill with the iki?

Cheers

Dave

PS: Contact Dave on 0403978583 for any information on the Evapac vac machine or bags.

Seabird report 3rd weekend

Headed out yesterday  on a pretty big and messy swell with both the boys chundering. Stopped on the sand banks again for some lovely fat Whiting. We then headed out into about 32m for lots of shark bust offs but finally at dead on 12 midday I broke my Dhuie drought/curse with a nice 4kg fish and from then on things got better. My oldest bagging his first just over size Pinkie. We moved out to 35m and within 5 mins my rod took off like a rocket. I called it for another Noah the way this thing ran but the young fella spotted the colour first and up came a nice 8kg Dhuie so my drought well and truly over.

Auto gearbox issue

Howdy all, hoping there's a auto tranny expert here somewhere. My work car, an ED Fairmont, and the 4 speed auto is a little on the smelly side. The fluid is off colour from the I assume, pinky colour to more of a brown colour. IT's not making any noises and changes up and down ok, but at times seems to be running about 400 rpm higher in top gear at 110kmh. I understand this is just a description, but anyone in the know, know what I need to do without spending a squillion on it?

Cheers

Dale

Hoping to borrow a kayak next weekend

Taking the kids to Preston Beach next weekend and since there are no ramps there, I am hoping to borrow a kayak, better still a tandem!  Anyone have one to lend me?

Geraldton FW members, lurkers etc

Just a thought but there seems to be a few more people from Gero here now, and Im just wondering if there is any interest in having a get together somewhere (pub?) for a beer over the next few weeks?

seajigger

hey guys, did try to use the search tab but not working?? anyways i got a seajigger 325 and snapped the tip of the rod when i was casting up in wagoe, daiwa has replaced it free of charge as there was a factory default with them, now need someone with a seajigger 325, if they can tell me how many guides they have? or how far up is the first guide is from the bottom of the top half, as i think they replaced the top half from either a 305 or 325, it just feels and looks different from what i remember a couple months ago, took a while for them to replace so i just want to make sure they gave me the right one, cheers chris

Perched on the jaws of death: Moment a seal dodges great white shark...

They are known for being one of the world's most feared predators.

But as this picture shows, great white sharks do not always get things right when moving in for the kill.

A shocked group of tourists in False Bay, South Africa, were left amazed when they saw this 12ft shark emerge from the water to catch a seal.

Incredible: Tourists in False Bay, South Africa, were left amazed when they saw this 12ft shark emerge from the water to catch a seal. But despite being one of the world's most feared predators, it badly misjudged its attack

But rather than carrying out a swift kill, the shark slightly misjudged its attack which resulted in the poor seal being finely balanced on the nose of the predator.

The amazing scene was captured by South African wildlife photographer Chris Fallows near Seal Island, which is home to an estimated 64,000 seals and a group of great white sharks which hunt them.

A group of tourists with the photographer were left stunned by what they saw.

Mr Fallows said: 'The guests aboard the boat were speechless with some guests even crying after the dramatic spectacle they had witnessed.'
