WA resources boom
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2008-05-21 13:24If anyone tells you that the WA boom is over - then here is the proof to show they are way off the mark.
A report released today by ABARE says that a record $70.5 billion in minerals and energy projects are currently under development, or being considered for development, in Australia.
Western Australia accounts for three-quarters of the capital expenditure on advanced projects, including 12 petroleum projects (valued at $27.9 billion) and 10 iron ore projects ($16.5 billion).
WA also provides the majority of the less advanced projects, which wil have a capital expenditure of $40 billion plus.
Personally, I think the boom in WA has at least another 10 years to run.

My Stance on RFW and a BIG thankyou to Terry!
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Wed, 2008-05-21 12:50Background
Well, it's been an interesting week so far in 'forum land' LOL
Firstly, let me say that I totally respect everyone's decision on whether they wish to be a RFW member or not and that I would never derogative or otherwise, cast judgement or solicit a persons stance.
My post in 'that thread' was a feeling and response (as to reaction) of frustration and hopefully sway an apparent mind set from a certain source (I'm sure you can work that out).
It was not, nor is intended to, impose or otherwise promulgate an idea that RFW members resign nor is it intended to usurp or attentuate positive feelings amongst members. Personally, I don't agree with all of RFW's proposals, but then, so won't every one else - they are a malange of different ideas, from different stakeholders. But I do think RFW do a darn fair job in a very difficult, complex and emotionally felt arena.
Thank you Terry!
Earlier today, Terry, of his own volition, telephoned me. If you don't already know, Terry is a volunteer and he pays for his own telephone calls. Terry took the incredible trouble of discussing my concerns and issues and we exchanged view points for more than 60 minutes. I don't always agree with Terry - but I do respect his approach, his dogged tenacity, his indefecitibility and his goals. If EVER any of you thinks that Terry doesn't care, or his otherwise ambivalent as to our (your) thoughts and perspectives, then nothing could be further from the truth. His comittment is without compromise or pier.
Thank you Terry! Your calibre is both rare and appreciated!
RFW
So; since I previously posted my intent to not renew my membership, I think it's only fair and equitable to re-post (and promulgate) my intention to stay with RFW and supoort and overall good cause (though details will be stumbled over LOL).
Colin MOLLOY
NB - This is ALL and ONLY about my previous stance on RFW and an appreciation of Terry - NOT to revisit previous 'stuff' - we're all better than that. :))

FINALLY!!!!
Submitted by Rodrat on Wed, 2008-05-21 10:43Hi all
Myself and a mate headed out for a fish on monday morn in the tub hoping for a good result.
After many frustrating fishing sessions and my motivation slowly drifting away we found a spot that made me smile all day and restored my faith in fishing. Many times i have fished for pink snapper and many times went home empty handed. Well monday was hot! We found a spot in 20m of water out from garden island and bureleyed up for a while. First fish was a sml pinkie and we got the feeling things were going to get good.
I caught an eel which swallowed my whole gang! Second fish blew me away when i got it up to the boat and it was my first pinkie that went 65cm.
Third fish was a thumper, snapper that went 77cm and 5.6kg. You should have seen the smile on my face. Mate also caught two big snapper. We also caught a shark, rays, sambo, skippy, wrasse, snapper. What a day! Thanks to all the guys who gave me the burley advice, it worked a treat. Hope to get some pics posted soon.

Charter fishing American style
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2008-05-20 12:41This is a bit of a follow up to Flangies query about charters.
A Florida high school teacher claims she was fired from her job on April 23, 2008, after school administrators learned she was moonlighting as a bikini mate on a charter fishing boat.
Tiffany Shepherd was one of several women who signed on with the charter fishing boat company “Smokin’ Em Charters.” Reports say the operation hopes to attract more business by featuring beautiful women in bikinis on their fishing trips. While some of the women were reportedly working topless, Shepherd has said she always wore a bikini.
“They’re under the impression I’m doing a topless charter, that I’m a stripper. I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I wasn’t in a thong, I was in a regular bathing suit,” Tiffany Shepherd said.
“As a matter of fact, when i am on the boat, most of the time, i give biology, marine biology lessons. It works out perfect because a lot of the guys have never been on a boat before. They have never fished, so they are coming off the boat with some fish and a little bit of knowledge.”
Bidding for an autographed photos of the lady is apprantly skyrocketing on eBay.
She has also claimed that she has been approached to appear in Playboy.

Federal budget spin

Rudd Government invests in recreational fishing industry
The Rudd Labor Government will invest $2.0 million over three years to help secure a sustainable recreational fishing industry for the future.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the Government would deliver on its election commitment to fund a new Recreational Fishing Industry Development Strategy.
“The recreational fishing industry is an important drawcard for regional Australia, underpinning tourism and boosting regional economies,” Mr Burke said.
“More than five million Australians go fishing each year; they book local accommodation, purchase goods and services and participate in other tourism activities.
“This new strategy will contribute to the long-term sustainable management of Australia’s fisheries resources and ensure regional economies continue to benefit from the industry.
“I will establish a national advisory committee for the recreational fishing sector, including a voice for the fishing tackle and tourism sectors, to advise the Government on a review of the 1994 National Recreational Fishing Policy and the development of a new Recreational Fishing Industry Development Strategy.
“The committee will also make recommendations on the funding of specific initiatives to encourage the promotion of sustainable fishing, education and awareness and best-practice environmental standards for recreational fishing.
“It is part of the Government’s overall plan for sustainable fisheries into the future.”

Driver straps in beer, leaves kid loose

Police in Alice Springs say they were appalled to find a driver put a seatbelt around a carton of beer - but left a five-year-old child unrestrained.
Officers stopped the unregistered sedan on the Ross Highway south of Alice Springs on the weekend.
They found the child sitting in the back seat without a seatbelt, but the driver had put a belt around a slab of beer.

"Boat owners best friend says Minister"
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2008-05-09 12:24This media release has just come from Francis Logan
New facility a boat owner's best friend
Western Australians who own boats but don’t have time to maintain them will benefit from a new facility at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson.
Industry and Enterprise Minister Francis Logan today officially opened Aquastack Marina, a secure facility that will provide repair, maintenance and boat-and-trailer stacking, as well as launch and retrieval services, to boats sized 5.5m to 10m (18 to 33 feet).
It is located near popular Perth boat ramps Woodman Point, East Fremantle and Rockingham.
Mr Logan said Aquastack Marina was a one-stop-shop for all boating enthusiasts and would help fill a storage gap in the recreational boat industry.
“This innovative facility will take all the hard work out of owning a boat so owners can enjoy more time on the water - it’s like a valet service for boats,” he said.
“Our amazing waterways and booming economy have resulted in a 40 per cent increase in registered recreational boats over the past 10 years.
“Industry is reaping these benefits, with a recent survey revealing the State’s boating industry contributes $380million a year to our economy. Our international status is also growing, with WA boats and recreational marine products totalling about $62million in exports last year.
“The need for boat stacking facilities in WA has increased, so it is great to see this innovative, space-saving concept come to the AMC.”
Aquastack Marina director Luke Clayton said its service offered clients’ peace of mind as their boats and trailers were stored exactly the same way each time.
“Aquastack Marina offers a quick turnaround time - clients can call us 30 minutes before they want to head out and we will have their boat ready for them to hit the water,” Mr Clayton said.
“We look after repairs, services and maintenance and can even pack a picnic basket. Our ultimate package means you don’t even have to lift a finger, we will organise everything and have the boat ready and waiting in the water for you to directly step on to.
“Our purpose-built fork lift can carry up to 25 tonnes and the facility can fit 220 small, medium and large sized boats and trailers with ease.”
Mr Logan said the State Government was investing in the State’s marine industry at the AMC.
He said a super-yacht building, servicing and repair centre proposal is being developed, and four new public boat ramps and stacking facilities are being built at Woodman Point.

Baghdad fishing club
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2008-05-07 09:23Learning to fish in Saddam’s lake
Reuters reports on a new fishing club in Baghdad.
US Army Warrant Officer Leslie ‘Scott’ Henry fishes in a lake surrounding a former palace of Saddam Hussein at the US Headquarters Camp Victory in western Baghdad. (Reuters: Peter Graff)
It’s early on a Sunday morning and the fish aren’t biting, but Warrant Officer Stormy (“like the weather”) Ripley is enjoying a moment of calm as she casts her line into a lake encircling Saddam Hussein’s former palace.
“Anything that will get me close to the water helps me relax,” says WO Ripley, who spends her days at headquarters in Baghdad trying to trace missing-in-action soldiers. “There’s something innocent about it in the midst of all this war.”
Welcome to the weekly gathering of the Baghdad Angler’s Club and School of Flyfishing.
This week’s lesson is being taught by Warrant Officer Leslie “Scott” Henry, a 19-year veteran helicopter pilot who investigates air crashes as Aviation Safety Officer when he isn’t wrangling feisty asp with his lure.
Iraq is a great place to catch freshwater fish. The country’s national dish is carp, barbecued outdoors in the capital at restaurants along the banks of the Tigris.
For some of the US troops stationed at the giant complex of bases built around Saddam’s lush marble palaces on the western edge of Baghdad, Sunday morning fishing has become a weekly ritual, a way to unwind and think about home.
The club has a website - baghdadflyfishing.com - filled with photos of troopers and their fish. In nearly all of them the soldiers are grinning ear to ear.
Fishing stories, like war stories, are more convincing when backed up by proof.
“You need that photo, or if you say you caught a 24-inch asp no one’s going to believe you,” says WO Henry.
The best place to catch fish, says WO Henry, is in the lake that surrounds Saddam’s half-built marble “Victory Over the United States” palace, now part of a US base.
There are two kinds of fish to catch: carp, which feed on the bottom and are best caught by dangling bait, and asp, a predator best caught by casting a lure near the surface.
WO Henry is an asp man.
“Carp eat off the bottom. They’re garbage fish,” he says. “They’re just not very sexy.”
A group of fishing novices, including a Reuters reporter, started Sunday’s lesson trying to catch carp. For bait WO Henry provided wads of bacon swiped from the dining hall and, as an experiment, a small rubber squid he filled with Philadelphia cream cheese.
But pretty soon the group is casting sleek mirrored lures in an effort to snag an asp. It takes skill to reel in the lures so that big fish mistake them for tasty smaller fish.
The Reuters correspondent catches one that thrashes frantically on the hook, but it leaps back into the lake before a photo can be taken. So you’ll just have to take Reuters’ word for it: it was as big as the reporter’s arm.

SALMON SESSION
Submitted by Rodrat on Tue, 2008-05-06 11:44Hi all
Got a call from a mate yesterday askin if i wanted to chase some salmon.
Didnt take much to twist my arm as i havent caught a salmon before and was keen to cross it off my list of fish to catch.
Headed to a landbase spot at rockingham, the weather was good and water was clear and flowing. I didnt have my mulie in the water for longer than 30 sec and whack! it was nailed by a salmon. What a great fight, my first salmon ever, all i needed to do was land it. With a bit of help from my mate and a good fight later we landed it. Should have seen the smile on my face! We ended up catching 3 each that were all around 5 to 6 kilo mark.
Caught them on mulies and soft plastics.
I took one home for dinner and dispite the rumors i have heard about the salmon tasting crap, myself and the family thought it was great.

Funny goings on at Hillarys
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-05-01 16:58I saw some strange antics at Hillarys the other morning. I pitched up before dawn and noticed what looked to be a craypot float sitting about 25 metres off the northern rockwall.
Then just after dawn a cray boat came out of the harbour and pulled over and pulled a cray pot up. I thought that was strange, but then he went a little further south - again about 25 metres off the north wall - and pulled up another pot.
Maybe it was something completely innocent, but it looked a bit strange to me.
All the best, Colin Hay
