Maths Guru help wanted
Submitted by Tom M on Tue, 2019-03-12 12:19Any smart fishermen out there able to roughly calculate the volume of water in Cockburn Sound. According to agency reports it is 100 klm 2 that would be surface area. I would suggest allow average depth 10 meters to make it easier.
Cubic or mega litres fine.
Leave it with you.

Follow up to Bret Carters case
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2019-03-11 09:57It would have cost Fisheries way in excess of $60K, but they say "a document doesnt exist to clarify the full cost".
What bullshit, how can they tip money into a hole without kinowing how much and what for?
If that is true it is a system wide open to rorting, mismanagement and just plain shoddy.

Long day out with rewards
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sat, 2019-03-09 21:17With the weather forecast the plan was set. Headed out 23nm out from mandurah. As everyone will know the weatger was as forecast. Was a slow day out with not too much on the chew other than pickers. In the end i got a pb bauldie and nearly another the same size which got off the hook on the surface and hightailed it straight back down and Brenden once again got braging rights with his catch. Also landed his pb shark and sambo. Sandy managed a small gummie and a kg. With a couple of breaksea thrown in for good measure.

Orange as a boat colour
Submitted by bradz on Thu, 2019-03-07 10:12Hey guys
For the past 2 years I've been rebuilding a Regent Viscount (similar to Baron Sportsman). The original hull colour was orange and has subsequently been painted white. As part of the rebuild I will be sanding back and repainting. My question is....is painting the side of your boat from the gunnels down orange a bad move? Ie from a re-sale perspective but also by bringing attention to yourself on the water.
From a safety perspective I imagine orange (air-sea orange to be exact) would be quite good. An being an older hull (about 1978) it would match the retro nature of the boat.
Obviously white is the most typical choice and I may end up doing that, which is what the wife would prefer. But I reckon orange suits that style.
Any opinions, friendly or otherwise are welcome.

Fill out form to have your say on oil and gas , exmouth.
Submitted by quadfisher on Tue, 2019-03-05 15:46 Top link you can fill out , BREAKING NEWS!
Industrial plans for Ningaloo’s Nursery are even worse than we thought, and certainly worse than the developers have been letting on. Heavy-engineering giant Subsea 7 claims there’ll be ‘negligible impact’ to seabed habitats in Exmouth Gulf if their plan to launch massive oil and gas pipes gets the go ahead from the WA government.
But their latest revised plan, released on Friday, shows that there’ll be far more seabed disturbance and even more land clearing than previously admitted. Disturbance from towing pipes through Ningaloo’s Nursery has now been revised upwards by 1464 hectares, and land clearing by another 7 hectares.
These last minute changes essentially reveal a new project with heavier impacts, and it should be reassessed from scratch.
With new science showing the impacts heavy shipping and industrial disturbance will have on marine mammals in the Gulf, the EPA should reject this proposal completely.
The public has only 7 days to make submissions to the EPA about these last minute changes, and with WA’s Labor Day long weekend falling during this period there’s no time to lose if you want to comment.
If you are concerned about this new proposal go to the link below, ask for it to be ASSESSED at highest level of PUBLIC ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW, and ask the EPA to start this assessment again and reject this proposal because its environmental impacts are totally unacceptable.
https://consultation.epa.wa.gov.au/…/le…/consultation/intro/
Submissions close March 9. (Note, this comment process is about changes to Subsea 7’s plans. The full environmental review comes later.)

RIP Keith
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2019-03-04 20:32Sad news to hear of the passing of The Prodigy's Keith Flint. Was the pioneer of the music of an entire generation taking me from year 8 to last month when they played in Perth and I threw off the shackles of middle age and went nuts one last time it would seem.

Shifted camp
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2019-03-03 05:38Shifted camp , back to being a Carnarvonite again, Missus got offered a job that offered better pay, conditions etc that was too good to pass up so packed the bus, car and boat up and did the move yesterday.
Only drawback was blowing a tyre on the bus near Overlander and ringing Beaurepaires to find out they had no 1100r x 20 tyres in WA so the smaller 10 00 x 20 spare went on and got us through. Then came the unloading---its surprising how much stuff we accumulated in the 3 years in Shark Bay that we had to sell , give away or chuck out as we planned to live in bus again but mate offered his fully furnished house with a driveway that fits a 10 metre bus, 5 metre boat and Triton with room to spare

Mindarie boat ramp - stolen number plates
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Mon, 2019-02-25 09:45Gday guys,
Just a heads up, had my number plates stolen off my car last friday night 22.2 between 5 and 8pm at Mindarie boat ramp. I was parked in the first bay to the right as you are exiting the ramp.
Out of vision of the camera's, will park in the open next time to make my car a little more visible.
Have applied for a new set of plates this week and new numbers, can only imagine what my old plates will be used for.
Cheers Scotty

RFBL Renewal
Submitted by Bigwig on Sun, 2019-02-24 14:40Just checked my licence expiry date today and it expires on 1/03/19. Haven't received a renewal notice
so have checked the fisheries website and seen the info on the changes to DOT for licences (DOT site down for maintenance today).
Has anyone received a renewal notice lately or have I just missed it?
Was thinking that because of the change to DOT and having to apply for a new licence that they may not be sending
out renewal notices. If this is the case then I can see a lot of fishos getting caught out.

Mindarie Marina Closed 24th March - update
Submitted by Iceman on Sun, 2019-02-24 09:53
If you are planning to launch your boat at Mindarie on Sunday 24th March don't bother. The marina will be closed to boating traffic from around 6.30am to 11.30am as there will be a swimming race from Quinns Beach to the boat ramps.
Not sure why someone would want to swim in the marina giving recent warnings about taking fish and crabs due to the Algal Bloom.

Assholes!
Submitted by Swompa on Thu, 2019-02-21 13:05No polite way to describe them.
Saw them fishing on the horse beach at Naval Base this morning. Went for a stroll at lunchtime and they were good enough to have left their rubbish consisting of a fish oil bottle, bait and burley bags, balloons and braid and a bit of other crap.
Remarkably, it wasn't heavy or hard to take to the bin, I did it, so please don't be scared to do it yourself!
Also, hold onto a block of concrete and see how fast you sink you waste of oxygen...

Maxus 30HP Outboard 2 stroke (longshaft) - top crank seal
Submitted by Confishius on Wed, 2019-02-20 14:55Hi Everyone,
I have a spare motor - 2011 Maxus 30HP 2Stroke Outboard (don't buy them - spare parts (because you always need them) are impossible to get.
I have tried parsun.com.au - no luck they don't stock the seals and cant tell me the specs.
Anyway - I'd like to get it running again and I need an oil seal for the top of the crank shaft.
if anyone can offer advice on the size and specs I will need that would be awesome.
*the 30HP Yamaha CV does not fit ($30 down the drain).
I've taken it to a Boat shop and they are unable to locate a suitable seal.
CBC and Statewide don't recognize the size either.
what a mission!
thanks in advance.

Solo and Night mission setup
Submitted by gruntre69 on Wed, 2019-02-20 10:59I've just made a setup for when the weather turns to crap or night running.
I've been wanting one of these PLBs for my dirt bike and an imminent Cape Yord riding adventure inspired my purchase. Works out perfect for addition to the auto inflate Floaty.
Added the Torch so I can see the thing to activate it at night. Torch and PLB attached by elastic lanyards.

Unlucky (but also very lucky)
Submitted by Sea goat on Sun, 2019-02-17 20:01Was coming back from the ramp when heard strange noise, so pulled over and. Like see the wheel wobbling I. The rear view mirror. As u can see.... cactus. Only thing holding the wheel on was the brake callipers! Not sure what went wrong, I have the bearings changed every year, last time being less than 6 months ago... always rinse, check for heat, allow to cool down before launching. Anything else I should be doing? This was only 5 minutes after leaving the ramp. Would like to avoid it happening again if at all possible!
cheers!

Hard day in the office
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2019-02-17 19:22Got out for a bash today with the forecast saying winds were dropping off early then picking up around lunch time.
Certainly wasnt an easy trip out but the winds did drop off but the fish just didnt want to play fair. Several undersize pinks and a dhuie were released well. Ended up with a feed for 3 of us . Brenden caught a quite strange double header off the bottom.
Certainly better than sitting at home doing nothing or out in the garden.
