Kayaking Discussion
Misleading Dept of Fisheries rules in Sunday times
Submitted by Shorty on Sun, 2009-07-26 14:08Just a heads up to any folks that wish to fish out of kayaks ,,you might get a bum steer if you take literally what you read in todays Sunday times and end up with a fine and possible criminal conviction.
Page 78 * A boat fishing licence of $30 will be required for all individuals fishing from a boat anywhere in the state.
This is incorrect you also need one for any floating vessel including kayaks/canoes.
If the Fisheriers boffins don't know the difference meet me at the Cockburn ramps next week and i will show you some canoes and boats,,,you might be suprised at the differences in appearances.
I would hate to see our kids get hit with big fines,"So much for fish for the future"

Jungle fishing
Submitted by Shorty on Fri, 2009-07-24 21:29Went to Cairns the other day and met up with Craig who was to take me Jungle fishing in the Mulgrave River South of Cairns,,,our target was to be Sooty Grunter (black & grunt out of water ) and the wiley Jungle Perch (JP'S)
Started of using an SX48 for no joy until Craig strapped on one of his go to lures (gold SX40) then i caught a heap of Sooties,,the Jungle Perch laid low all day though.
Its a very scenic part of the country and the fish were a bonus (all released)

Hobie-ing to Rottnest
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Thu, 2009-07-16 14:16Every time I'm out on the hobie around Perth, I look out at Rotto and wonder how hard such a trek would be. I have no doubt its probably not particularly daunting on a good day.... People kayak there all the time during the Rotto swim..
Which makes me wonder, have any of the mad yakkers here tried it? Maybe we can organise a kayak convoy over there.. Safety in numbers etc. Could even get a support boat....?

Hobie Boat Rescue!
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Sun, 2009-06-14 22:16Wow, what can i say, was a truly scary series of events today.
Firstly, at the Hobie test day, we saw a boat floundering in HUGE seas of the Matilda Bay boat ramp, bodies were strewen everywhere in the mess, it was lucky noone was seriously hurt. But i risked MY OWN LIFE AND LIMB for these guys, my comrades in arms in there 18ft fiberglass beast. The ensuing seas were no match for the NEW HOBIE PRO ANGLER< as she destroyed the massive swell on her way to rescuing the helpless boat, stricken, or so it seemed untill i came to save them.
I really don't want to be made out to be a hero or anything, it's cool. I like being the simple, aussie bloke i am. I just did what i figured any of you guys would have done in the same situation.
I mean, ones life is really insignificant, when it means you can save many.

Yes i know, crazy shit.
No please no, i dont want awards or money. The fact that i saved a life is reward enough.

Kalbarri Rivermouth
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Tue, 2009-05-26 21:29Got up at the crack of dawn thismorning and ranm the gauntlet at Murchison Rivermouth. Definatley not an easy passage on yak, but doable. Headed out and south looking for some good lumps but unfortunatley hampered by the howling NEaster and decided to err on the side of caution and head back. Stopped just inside the Black Rock on the way in and threw a twisty around and hooked up big time, tho was struggling to keep the yak stable in the wash, took some whitewater over the yak, and busted him off and headed in. Going to have another look tomorrow, with a little less breeze, looks like Col's suggestion of bumper tailor there may well be true.

Shark Bay Yakking
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Mon, 2009-05-25 09:49
Had a great first day on the water, with the morning session a Google Earthed bushtrack to the top of L'Haridan Bight, and some decent looking ground that turned out to be large weedbeds in a barren sandy wasteland. Was good fishing tho, with many small Baldchin caught to 30cm+, and a couple of nice school Mackies on soft placcies and ultralight gear. Certainly gave a great fight, and we got some excellent footage!

Amazingly clear water of the Bight, this is nearly 4m deep. The Southern half of the Bight is a sanctuary zone, and seems to be a fish nursery by the number of small prize fish caught.

One of a few Mackies caught for the day, both on 10lb line, light leader, and 70mm Squidgy Flick Baits. Certainly great sport!!!!
Toward the end of the day, we were kicking back with Coronas overlooking the bay from our front porch, when the guy next door suggests there are some good size Yellowfin whiting on the edges of the weedbanks. This was all i needed, and the yak was of the roof in minutes, and armed with some soft placcies and a bream rod, i cruised out and scored some good size whiting, and was home to fry them up for dinner!!

The soft placcies proved deadly on these guys, with a brace caught for dinner!

A sensational sunset to end a perfect day.
We searched many spots up here looking for ground to yak, and eventually hit the water at Herald Bight, a nasty little 4wd track onto a gorgeous sandy bay, where we head out into the occasional drizzle, and hooked into a few smaller fish.
This part of the Shark Bay area is incredible, beautiful scenery, and very remote. We got some great footage and a few pics too.

The crossroads on the Point Peron track, at the end of a huge salt lake. Really strange, almost alien country, with sandy tracks heading in all directions.

The beach at Herald Bight, ominous clouds in the background contrast the white sand.

Best fish for the day for me was suprisingly this monster Flounder that took a whole mulie destined for much bigger prey, this fella was pushing 40cm.....
We headed back to town after spending the majority of the day out in the Francois Peron National Park, and put away the gear. Cracked a Corona, and kicked back on the porch. Unfortunatley the staring out onto the glassed out bay proved too much for me, and soon i was ripping Shufoy of the roof of the Prado, and pedalling out onto the sandy flats to chase whiting on placcies once more. Unfortunatley no Whiting today, but a series of Bluelined Emporer proved great game on superlight tackle, as well as a few new species for the trip, like big toothe Longtom, well i think there Longtom..

This hardfighting Bluelined Emporer took a 2" Gulp Worm on 4lb gear that was out trying to decieve a whiting, fought hard as, and gave awesome sport on the light tackle. He was around the 40cm mark.

Cruising over the flats on the drift, a few errant splashes that gave me a target resulted in these guys, a think they are Longtom, another new species for me.
So as i return from the Pub, watching the Eagles go down over a Rack of Lamb and a few Wild Turkeys, we pack the last of our gear and prepare to leave this place for our next and last destination, Kalbarri. Sad and happy, who knows what we will find there....

Coral Bay Yak Time
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Mon, 2009-05-18 12:54Spent the last few days yakking around Coral Bay. followed a few of the 4x4 tracks out of town and found some great ground. Caught heaps of great fish over two days on the water. Weather played the game, and had an absolute ball. Again wifey also did well, with soft plastics doing the damage on some great fish. Biggest went 55cm ish, and we caught several around this size, they sure hit hard and pull well the Spango's, not to mention damn fine on the plate. Caught approx 40 fish over two days, keeping the biggest each day for that nights meal.
Great spot this, and i'll be back for sure!!

Exxy Yak Style
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Fri, 2009-05-15 17:06What a trip, dreams of massive mackies haunted my dreams for weeks leading to this, but on arrival, and scoping out the place, reality struck. This trip, my first fishing Exxie, has been an amazing trip, and for accumulating information, worth every cent. Thats not to say we didn't get into some fish tho!!
The first week we spent every day out on my mates boat, looking at ground, and pulling fish from the packs of sharks and voracious cod that inhabit the reef area. I'll put pix up later for this, but the second week we got into some ball-breaking fish, with, i reckon , only 30% of hooked fish landed, with numerous bust offs, bite offs, and broken rods and reels force releasing many and angry oceanic bulldog!
Heres a few pics, with some highlights for me, oh, and for Carmel...

One of the bigger sharks i managed to get on the yak, some great footage to come. Big balls of muscle these guys, hard as to handle.

Meter+ Longtom, one of many firsts for me this trip.

Another first, a Mangrove Jack, from the soon to be closed to fishing Yardie Creek.

One of many Shark Mackeral caught this trip.

Chunky Estuary Cod.

Bluelined Emperor, this thing hit like a truck, and pulled like a train!!!

At over a meter, my biggest Mackie from Exmouth. Interesting story as to why this is the only pic of this fish, let's just say, Carms went swimming while taking this pic....

Beat this fellas!!!!! Carmels meter+++ Longtail Tuna!!! Caught on a soft Placcie, all by herself!! She absolutely OWNED this fish, footage to come!!!!
As you can see, thit trips been awesome, with this only being a small amount of the fish caught, and we are only half way through our trip!!!!!
We have just arrived in Coral Bay, and the weather is looking awesome for the next few days, and the mackies are in numbers, with the sharks!!!!
Hopefully some more good fish to come.
Good to catch up with the Fishwrecked crew while there too.

5 Fathom on Yak
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Sun, 2009-04-26 19:19
With a perfect forecast we met up, just after 6 thismorning for a 5 Fathom mission. Me, arriving a smidge late, arrived at the carpark to be met by Colin, Karl and Matt, so we all rigged our vessels and hit the water for a 6.45 launch. Out to the 5 we head, on perfect seas.

Mattyoga at full steam on the X-13.
The 7-andabit-km trip was uneventful, with many baitfish on the sounder, and we arrived at the mark soon after. I chose a sandy spot surrounded by reef just on the back edge of the Bank. Dropped a pick, and a handful of pellets (SPESS'S BREW) to encourage some action, and soon after, was into it. A solid hit on my light rod and the Flickbait on the end resulted in a choice slugfest with a solid Skippy just on 42cm. Another few solid Skippy followed, with a Wrasse or two, before things started to go quiet..

A couple of solid Skippy! Onya Skip!
I moved a little further onto the heavy structure of the Bank itself, and found a small sandy hole where i dispatched my anchor, again, pellets go out, and fish come in. This time a chunky little Pinky smashed my 5" Jerkbait, apparently "Teryaki Chicken" is the go with the pinks! It really put up a solid fight, and i had no idea that it was what it was till i landed it!

All this way to catch a Pinky!!
After a bit of a chinwag with Karl and Col, and pursuing a camera shy turtle, we decided it was time to head in, Matty had set off a bit earlier and was having a snooze with his sail up! I stopped just off the islands on a big baitball and threw a few placcies around, catching a bunch of small Pike! Was a bit of fun before hitting the beach where Shorty greeted us.

Matty trying to look awake after i caught him sleeping on the way in!
Was a sensational morning!!

Snappy Time
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Fri, 2009-03-06 18:34
Mosied on down for a run during the week, was dead flat calm when i left home, but a gentle ENE was brewin as i hit the carpark. Greeted the morning fisherman, mostly retirees and other bludgers like me, and rigged up the Adventure. Bursting with anticipation in trying out my redesigned camera mount, and seeing how moving the battery rear would affect "Shufoy's" performance. The sun was hinting at spilling over the horizon as i get my feet wet for the first time and cruise of the shoreline.
Picked up 3 squid in 10mins just off the shore, and headed out for a brief troll before anchoring up and throwing out some fresh squid baits. I threw small SP's on the light rod, picking up a constant stream of baby Pinkies, at around 20cm+, this turns to a mix of these and skippy around 25-30cm which are great fun on light gear.
The other rod takes off smoothly, and i have a short, torrid affair with a big flappa, only to have him bust me off shortly after. By this stage the NE was really blowing, 15knots++ and gusting hard. So i shelter at anchor for a while, before no sizeable hit's or runs, i head back to the troll.
On the last run of the day, working my way back into the nor'easter, i had another hook up, and after an awesome fight, landed this 60cm+ Pinky!

After a long day, this Pinky was great reward for some hard work! :D
An excellent reward to end a tough day. But i tried some new techniques today, but it paid off, when the hard to get fish was got!!

KFWA Social Bream Comp Round 1 : Sunday 15th Febuary
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Wed, 2009-02-04 20:21
Sunday 15th febuary is Round 1 of the Kayak Fishing Western Australia Bream Social Competition!!
This will be a early start, launching at Matilda Bay on the Swan River.
We will be running this comp in conjunction with the "West Australian
Bream Classic Round 1 Comp" so we will be launching with all the Bream
Boat guys, and presenting prizes about the same time too. Big thanx to
Craig at WABC for letting us use there infrastructure on the day, and
making us feel welcome.
Grant at Sailpower marine at this stage will be putting up some
prizes, and hopefully i can get another sponsor or two interested.
The competition at this stage will probably be a length of fish based
comp, with people taking a clear picture of there fish on a measuring
device or brag mat that leaves no conjecture about the fishes length.
People who have live wells are also welcome to bring live fish back for
a measure also. This is to accomodate those who do not have a livewell
at this stage, and gives people time to get one organised before the
next comp.
Remember this is a lure only competition, and some rules do apply to numbers of rods, and stuff!!
Please support this if you can guys. The WA Bream Classic guys are
very keen on having us do some competition fishing with the boaties,
and furthering the strength on the local competition!
As it develops, we will get better prizes, and hopefully larger
fields and more sponsors onboard. This first round is more to test the
water and see who's keen.
Sorry for the short notice, but to run with the Boat guys is too good an oppurtunity to miss, for both us and them!
Post your interest below!
If you have any queries, feel free to either PM me, or call me on my Mobile : 0422 816 987
All rules, regulations, times and locations are available from me. PM me for further info.
