Few recent fish
Submitted by Sea goat on Wed, 2023-05-24 13:38Few fish caught over recent weeks.
snapper caught in 13m went 80cm. Epic fight on light gear fishing for skippy. Filleted and ate the wings and frame on the bbq. Fed 6 adults and 5 little kids. Nothing left to waste!
had a solo day out, was given the day off by the missus. Plan was to fish in close for snapper then head out when the wind dropped. Launched at 6:30, fisher within 3 mile, 3rd drop got at 50cm baldy, 2 drops later pulled in a 56 dhu! Well there go my plans for the day! Bagged in demersal a by 8am lol. Weather was too good to head in so went trolling.
drive to the area I thought might produced, put the lures out, within 2minuyes reel was screaming, pulled in a nice sbt. Was bleeding like hell, so kept this one, over the next hour caught and rwaleaswd about a dozen more, not quite as big , but great on light gear. Couldn't get away from them! Headed home to do some filleting! Huge school of dolphins playing around the boat was cool to see. Will try to figure out how to post videos.
took my brother out this weekend, doesn't go fishing much. First spot quiet, so moved a bit, for a double header of good sambos which released well. He was stoked, prob biggest fish he has ever caught, and had him huffing and puffing! Decided to move as they were too much hard work lol!
fished next spot for 2 baldies 1 was 38cm. Bit smaller than I'm used too but was clearly stuffed. Can see where eliminating size limit comes into play here. Other was 46.
stopped right on a Bonny to let my bro drop and he got a 56cm dhu as soon as it hit the bottom. Then pulled up a cracker 52cm breaksea. Great day, time to head home! Breaksea for dinner in fish tacos!
hopefully can get out this weekend!

1100 hour service
Submitted by Ericl on Tue, 2023-05-23 15:40Phew. Just did my DF250 1100 hour service. 100 hours since my sheered shaft episode. Happy to say the leg dropped absolutely freely with no resistance and grease was still evident on the splines. I've been away for an extended period so haven't done any demersal bash since the current period opened and I'm keen to have a bash this weekend. Can anyone advise the current status of the Two Rocks Marina. Substantial work was being carried out last time I was there. Thanks - Eric

Submitted by piscetor on Sat, 2023-05-20 18:39Went out the back of the FF last night about 2 NM north of Coventry. had the arms streched with 4 sambo's 3 big salom that pulled harder than the samb's i estimated them to be between 10 and 12 pound in the old scale, bloody great boof headed things. Also a shark and some skippy. Great night but everything went back. Only looking for snapper and the elusive dhuie. Good fun though especially when the salom start jumping.

Landline Sunday 14th May
Submitted by Bradmac73 on Thu, 2023-05-18 10:34
Anyone else see Landline on Sunday where they were speaking to the Shark Bay shire president? Shark bay council are now evidently concerned that the demersal ban will push all fishers to Shark Bay as the first location outside of the south west bioregion zone. They also strongly revisited the "bins full of fish frames" discussion of a few years back. Lots of gratuitous photos of an overflowing bin for effect.
Long story short they have lobbied the Minister to reduce catch limits in Shark Bay to ease the assumed impact of the extended demersal ban on the area, unsuccessfully at this stage. They interviewed Minister Punch who said that no changes would be made unless there was solid evidence to prove it was needed (seems contrary to the approach taken for the extended south west demersal ban!!)
The shark bay council are evidently monitoring boat launch numbers this winter and if they exceed usual numbers they will be going back to the minister/govt with this as evidence of a need for reduced catch limits. What they are using as their control data to compare against is not clear.
It seemed pretty clear in the interview with the Shire president that toursim is the sole focus of their interest, all discussion of the town relying on visitors to survive was aimed toward "tourists" not people coming to fish, or at least it came across that way to me.

Great to put someone else onto a nice fish
Submitted by sunshine on Sun, 2023-05-14 15:48 Took a young man ( Luke) who before emigrating to WA was a mad keen carp fisherman. His one wish was catch a dhu. Mission accomplished with a really clean 7.5kg fish. Odd day on the water, only a handful of decent bites but only one really mattered.

Rfbl random selection
Submitted by rob90 on Sat, 2023-05-13 13:58Has anyone else received a call from uwa fisheries research saying their licence has been randomly selected for a survey regarding rock lobster fishing? I've kindly declined twice this week. Maybe fisheries are on a new mission?

Damn this cold!.
Submitted by Silver Fox on Fri, 2023-05-12 08:26After spending the last six winters living in NW West Oz, the Torres Straits and now living just south of Cairns I've come to realise how lucky I've been. Arrived back in Perth yesterday to catch up with both sides of the family and Faaaark me, it's fricking freezing!. I was a little over the crocodiles, mold, humidity and rain associated with living in the tropics and was looking forward to some winter action and be able to walk a river bank without being on the hit list for a snapping handbag. I had truly forgotten what chilled to the bone felt like. Maybe I'm getting older and I've become a pussy and I need to harden up. I'm not looking forward to hitting Melbourne next week!.

Out of sight, out of mind - East freo shark fishing ban proposal
Submitted by robert1979 on Tue, 2023-05-09 20:25FYI especially for those who fish for sharks around East Freo, the council is proposing to ban it. I don't fish for sharks but feel its a wasted opportunity to actually obtain some info about these fish via recreational tagging.

Lobster in winter
Submitted by Grey Ghost on Sun, 2023-05-07 17:11I'm interested in trying for a few lobster in winter and normally launch from Woodman Point Boat Ramp.
Where is a good place to put pots in, in winter? Same place as in the summer season? Normally I have them behind GI and 5 Fathom Bank.
Deeper or shallower water?
Thanks for help

Beach cobes
Submitted by scotto on Sat, 2023-05-06 06:44I went to shark bay over Easter, with mates and families. Great to see there's still some quality exploring to be had up there, although not surprising considering how huge that area is. We found a nice beach that had schools of 3-4kg+ tailor everywhere, trevally, little pinkies, etc, and like many places up there was super shallow, under 1m deep.
A big surprise was the amount of hungry cobia hanging out with the stingrays. Sight casting gold twisties and watching these cobes peel off and chase your lure in crystal clear skinny water all the way to your knees, then hit and run over 100m was fuckin epic, and what made it more fun was these were all on our squidding gear. 15-20minute fights the normal. My record was 3 cobia in a 2 hour session, amongst the 30-odd tailor we caught and released.

Anyone want to join me for a short term fishing charter holiday?
Submitted by ricey on Thu, 2023-05-04 10:36I have a few weeks off work, and some $$$ to spend.
I sadly don't have a fishing mate to do a good short term trip with. I am thinking about 4 days away or so and am actually open to anywhere in Australia.
Top of the bucket list is sailfish, Barramundi would be second. Both is better. Broome, Exmouth, Cairns and Darwin are all ideas.
I have had trips cancelled due to wind too many times - so planning on getting some indication of forecast before booking. Thinking anytime second half of May.
I am 45, keen fisherman who just doesn't get out that much. Would prefer to go with someone I know (but the people I know aren't that keen / working).
I also posted about a short term trip closer to home - as I have a friend with a few days free (not quite enough for this trip though).
Anyway - if you are in the market for a shortish great trip I am good company and ready for a great trip.
let me know.

Anyone want me to pay for our Abrolhos trip?
Submitted by ricey on Thu, 2023-05-04 10:28Hiya people.
I have 4 weeks off work and am keen for a short term trip. Ideally thinking May 15 week or so ...
Plan was to get to Abrolhos for an overnighter - I don't need a lot of fillets - but want to do some exploring / top action / shallow jigging etc whatever. I have a mate to come with me ... but he has limited time - he has some 3 day opportunities (including travel from Perth). Did I mention we don't have a boat ... the gear is not a problem...
Happy to be very generous with the $$ and pay all the costs. Anyone with a boat capable of doing a day trip or two ... or an overnighter would be ideal.
Low fuss / easygoing fellas.
Sooo if you have some time and the boat capable - send me a message ...
Doing a few days out of Jurien bay is plan B...
Heck we might even fly up to Exmouth and deckie for anyone up there with room.
Hopefully we can talk soon.

What is the weed condition like?
Was down there two weeks ago, plenty of herring and whiting but lots of weed could not set any decent baits.
