Just cheking for the best weather site for Jurien bay, heading up there this weekend

 anyone know how bad the weather needs to be before fishing charters pull the pin on a day out? Heading up on the weekend for a week and weather looks average booked a fishing charter on the Tuesday.  not sure if it’s worth towing my boat up either. I never have any luck up there with the weather...

 I started quizzing him becos I never heard of any rebate from ATO and asked him to point me to the link on ATO site giving such rebate.

 He obviously couldn't and said that is why he is there to help many Australians.

 I told him straight how would I know he is not a scammer trying to phish for my identity and I need to verify whether he is legit.

 He then retorted saying I probably don't and couldn't afford my own house and mortgage judging from the way I speak.

 I told him straight I am not interested and hang up straight away.

Thinking of doing a shakedown camp aboard trip in Shark Bay later in the year. Plan to launch at Baba Head and spend something like 3 days/ 2nights. I know the Tea Tree camp side of the peninsula well enough, and think it is logical to plan my movements around wind and tide, priority being a comfortable camp for the night after fishing ceases. I know how the water just disappears from the bottom of the bay ( at least on the Tea Tree side) when you get a sou'easter, and was wondering if anyone had looked at Salutation Island in this respect. Charts aren't much help, of course, when a couple of foot of water makes all the difference at low, so I've been looking at Google earth as a rough guide to how shallow it "looks", compared to other places which I am familiar with. I know it won't be deep, but would it be do-able, preference being to not wake up in the early hours with the hull starting to touch the bottom?  I've noticed it is a reserve, and have looked for information on that, and just assume it is OK as long as you don't go ashore. Not a fishing exclusion zone like Mary Anne island?

 The forecast for Tuesday afternoon looked too good to pass up and having fished the previous Tuesday night for undersize pinks and a just size Dhu, I thought it a good idea to get out and have another crack at an after storm pinky. Being soft I don't like to fish the gale force downpours so waited for after it had well and truly passed.

Launched the boat at Hillarys about 4pm and the deckie supplied the coffee which was a nice touch. A friend had reported some action on the close reefs outside the hole in the wall so we headed there. Using the Garmin side scan to see where a likely place was to drop the anchor.

There was a very light breeze from the NW and the current running north/south meant the boat sat very nicely to fish floaters next to the reef. I got the berley pot set up with some of the ShoreCatch berley mulies. I like these as they seem to keep a good trail going and only have to pump the muncher from time to time. My floating mulie got picked a couple of times and the deckie landed a size baldie. Next the deckie landed a skippy, so it was time to send the fresh skippy fillet out on my floater. Getting close to sunset we started seeing these images on the sounder (image is from later when I remembered to take a screen shot):

Just as the sun went down my floater reel screamed into life with a blistering first run and when I pushed the lever drag up on the reel, it didn't stop. That kind of obnoxious behaviour made me call it for a sambo. Another couple of runs and I gained some line and when it surfaced I was very please to see it was a good pink. Deckie was quick with the net and in the boat went my new PB pink of 85cm. I was stoked.

After dark the action kept going. I had a few more runs that didn't hook up and then another where it came up tight when I pushed the lever up. Funny enough, this 56cm pink came up with an old rig in his mouth that had been there for some time. You can see the rig where the seaweed is growing on it. Circle hook, very thick mono with crimps and a failed swivel at the other end.

All in all, a great little session and back in the marina just after 8pm.

I have just gotten a boat and I want to try and fish the 40's, I have been out once and couldn't find any ground. Could someone tell me what to look for one the sounder for different grounds. Im not after anyones spots but just want to know what to look for.

 Poor guy hits reef outside hillarys  marina last night and sinks his boat. Hope he saved his catch.

 Just packing to head up to Exmouth from the 2nd till the 16th. Anyone members be up there at the same time? 

I will have the family in tow, staying at the Ningaloo caravan park camping it and will be bringing a 5.2m Ali roundabout up. Also have some other family and friends coming and going over the 2 weeks but hope to get out fishing as much as weather (and the missus) allows!

Havent fished up there other than the FW Como a few years back so any general advice appreciated!

 Reading WA Water Authority Annual reports to gather more information on their performance for the wate water outlets Point Peron, City Beach & Swanbourne and found an item that might be of interest in their metrics for past several years. No reports of odours or discolouration of water. So if anyone does, note to yourself to report it to the Water Corp for their records.

They continue to tell us that algal blooms are natural, won't argue with that, BUT the WA Health Dept warn that excessive nutrients will cause larger blooms. So if the WA Water Corp continue to pump out crap it only stands to reason that we will get large algal blooms. Haven't got this years report out but for 2016 & 17 the water corp have exceeded the license requirement for dischaging Faecal Pathogens (PC way of saying shit germs) into the water, Letters to the minister for water is okay with that. For those that fish Rocky area out from Point Peron plans are to double the volume discharged as East Rockingham WWTP grows.

Just a reminder to check your EPIRB, went to Exmouth early in May cleaned the boat out when we got home and when replacing the gear gave the GME EPIRB a check and the battery was flat, not due for replacement until 2026, there appeared to be cracks that developed near the GPS sender, can't remember dropping or hitting it with anything and when not in use the boat is in a shed, the top had discoloured as well. Sent it to GME in Sydney and they're replacing it under warrenty so all good in that regard so just putting it out there that everyone should do a regular checks as it could save you a bit if grief.

The last bit about rope managment is nice to hear, not sure how many people will be dropping pots for crays in the middle of winter with the swell around, but hey it does give people the option.

To all owners I like to have your opinion of how Van Staal reels compares to Daiwa, Shimano or Penn. While I started with Penn and Daiwa half a lifetime ago, I always had to work harder in winding in the Penn compared to the Daiwa or Shimano. All this is really are gear ratios which Penn's is worse than any of the Japanese maybe all other makes. I like to know what the Van Staal is like in this sense when fishing with it. When you are getting old like me you need all the help you can get.

I own a 580 Formosa and love it (fuel economy) is 1.6 but it’s not suitable for the trips I want to do so in peoples opinion what boat would people buy for long range fishing that can carry four men and kit so a extended hard top is a must.

I’m just after a fishing machine and any suggestions muchly appreciated.

 looks like there a bit of gap in the weather tonight and tommorrow swell is still up but we are going to have a go. Big burley trail and edge of the bank where last time we got a dhue and a pink.

So with thebalmy weather  a quick trip north was on the cards  mothers day was perfect but no chance there ! Couldnt  believe that the weather  stayed good  through till last weekend

Left batavia mid morning  and steamed over in about 2 hours fished around hummock island and trolled few lures for not much  Heaps Birds  and activity but no strikes ..Cruised the eastern  side and found a  public mooring  for the night. Easterlies  were howling  the next day so stayed shallow Picked up some solid pinkys so put the mask on .. baldy city! Had a good day on baldys and trout .

moored at a great spot the next night  and had a bit of land under our feet for the arvo   

Easterlies were pumping again  next day so quick fish before  we headed back to geraldton

was a great first trip and will definitely be back!

Used about 70 L each way with a 200 suzuki 6.5  metre boat so well within the range of most traler boats  

 Saw the the Simrad and Raymarine sidescan post so thought I would post some Garmin ones for comparisson.

 Looking to buy a new one soon. Which one and why ? Any recommendations and where to buy it cheers.

Shore Catch in Wangara has a valued staff member taking some well-deserved leave in June/July. We are therefore seeking a person(s) for short term replacement, with the potential for ongoing part time employment in a growing business with a high emphasis on quality.

Expressions of interest will be accepted prior to 31 May through FB message or . Applicants need to provide a cv and a short statement as to why they may be suited to the position. Interviews will be conducted the following week and selected applicants will be expected to present in person for a short trial in processing high quality fish based products.

Employment conditions are in accordance with the Seafood Processing Award, and up to 20 hours on 2-3 full days during the week may be required. Training will be provided to the selected applicant(s).

The position would suit a young person with an active interest in recreational fishing, where part time employment suits current circumstances. All prospective applicants are however encouraged to apply.

just read on the Rockingham Fishing Facebook another fisho was bashed with a baseball bat and had his gear, car and yak stolen when fishing at the yacht club jetty in Rockingham. Also had his gear pinched a couple of weeks back when he had a medical episode on the jetty in Rockingham. I believe moves are underway to help him out with some gear and a car.
