Watching fisheries at Henderson , watching yakkas fishing around rockwalls.. keep in mind you are not allowed to chase pinks at all . Not even catch and realease . They must be going for sambos or mullys by the looks. Just for those who are unsure of rules. And are just out for fun. Just check regs. Not worth the fine.

Just had a look at the latest guide for the forthcoming rock lobster season.
I can't recall if this is the same wording that was used in the previous guide, however the booklet indicates that it was by not highlighting it with a red marker.

Extract from rec rock lobster fishing guide 2017/18

You must check each rock lobster as you
catch it to determine if it is totally protected
(see page 10). If totally protected, you must
release it carefully and immediately, before
another rock lobster is captured.

Hi there just wondering if anyone knows if you are able to launch a dinghy at seabird over the next few weeks, have done it in the middle of summer but not this time of year?

Hey all, heading off to Tassie in 5 weeks with the wife, hired a camper van for 10 days. starting from Hobart and heading up the east coast. Not realy a fishing trip but i have snuck two travel rods into the collection to get hidden at the bottom of my bag. 1-3 kg bream rod and 5-8kg shore hunter. Looking for tips on easy to access bream water and what do they catch off the beach/rocks ?? All i can find is tailor are rare and salmon seem to be caught everywhere. Will mainly be fishing lures and soft plastics. Any advice appreciated. cheers.

can anyone give me an answer.. if i launch the boat in west coast bio region.. let’s say augusta, but drive past white point in the boat to the south coast bio region.. then drive back to augusta to put boat on trailer.. what is my bag limit? 5 or 2? I can prove the boat went into south coast bio with track lines on gps..  but can’t prove the fish were caught there. Seems a bit grey

Cant find anything in the book about this and have consistently had inconsistent info from different fisheries officers over the years which has put me off contacting them

                                          Is it just me ? . Is what happened in Las Vegas last night having a desensitising effect on your emotions? . Years ago an event like this would have been truely shocking , yet in today's society it seems to becoming more common place . Are we ( sadly ) reading the news and processing the information and not really absorbing the fact that the world is slowly but surely turning to shit before our own eyes? . Even more worrying, what can be done to fix this helpless situation ? .

my son and I caught these on Sunday afternoon, we took photos and let them go.  I am interested in people's thoughts on there eating quality, I have never eaten Sampson fish and have always heard that they are a mother in laws fish,  anyway they are a fantastic fighting fish tested out the light gear and was great  fun catching them.

Thinking of taking the boat to Walpole for a few days. Would like target whiting, bream and flathead from inside in the inlet but also head out and get YTKs and demersals. Looking at the charts it gets deep QUICK, 40m a nautical mile out - hence the demersals. PBut given its the southern ocean, what are the conditions like? Has anyone else been? Plus it looks a little treacharous getting out. Also are there many fish in the estuary?

Im running a 4.5m ali centre console, robust for its length.

Love to hear any experiences.

 Thinking about making one out of an esky and was wondering if anybody has made one that works well? I have bought a 2 amp aerator to put in it that has suction cups on the bottom. Thanks for any help it is going in my old voyager that i have been refurbishing.

I decided to head out in my kayak last monday afternoon into the sound to chase some snapper. At home in Canning Vale the wind was almost nothing so I loaded up and headed off to the Cockburn Ramps. When I got there the wind was ssw and looking at BOM current observations was blowing at 16 kts and gusting to 20kts. I have fished similar winds in the yak before so launched anyway and headed out.

I got out to the area I was fishing which was not protected at all and passing an anchored tinny was told there were fish around. 100 mts further along I saw the first school on sidescan, tempting them to bite was another matter as they ignored the white Abrohlos Tackle McPaddle loaded on one of Big John's glow jig heads. 30 minutes later the wind had freshened and on the way in i checked the Bom site which said the wind had freshened to 23 to 27kts for a period. The feeding switch had been turned to on and the snapper were smashing the plastics. In about 90 minutes I hooked 11 fish and landed 6 to 90 cms. Kept one at 87cms and released the rest. The anchored boats werent getting many fish at all and only one boat I spoke to at the ramp had got any fish.

 Had a great day out in mostly average weather conditions off Mindarie today , 9 dhu to 13kg , 2 gummys over 10kg , 2 nice blackass , Kg"s , 2 nice SBT's on 10lb jig ,and a100kg ? 3metre wobby on my Calcutta 200 and Catalina bayjigging rod , ran home at dusk in absolutely shit conditions which only impressed me more on the BC performance, good day! 

 Landed these two beasties 890mm (8.9kg) & 760mm (6.1kg) in the sound, lots of boats were out and most left with at least one to their name. 

Hadn't landed one in 2 years, but have been trying time after time and had finally paid off.

Hi All

Off to dongara with the family next week coz the young bloke wants to go fishing whilst on school holidays. I have read all the posts i possibly can in the search bar and got all the locations for the beach bashing sorted i think.

What are we likely to get at this time of year off the beach up there? Will it be mostly tailor or will there still be some mullys around now?

We have a 3.8m tinny with a 15hp is it worth taking or it not much of a dinghy area around there? Do you get many squid or anything around the weed beds that might keep the 5 year old amused?

Lastly anyone else going to be up there from the 3rd till the 9th with a bigger boat that may need a deckie so i can get away from the missus and kids for the day. Weather is looking ok later in the week.

Bought an Evakool Fridgemate carcass for very cheap as the compressor unit had died. What was left was basically a box with holes as not only compressor removed, the owner removed the housing as well. He left the evaporator coil which is now useless so I removed it. As this was riveted in it left the rivet holes as well as a 25mm hole thru which the pipes from compressor went to evaporator coil. Other issues:

1. Removal of housing meant no handle and part of the body moulding gone as it appears that all that may have been removed to install the compressor unit.

2. one latch missing

3. parts of gasket had holes.

My first task was to patch up all the holes with the worst being the 25mm that the pipes entered the box. The other headache was removal of handle on the other side I think to house the compressor, etc also had part of the body panel removed. Forgot to take photo so cant show you. But can show you result in the pics to follow. While box is plastic there are many types and you need to know which one so that a proper bond takes place. It seems that virtually all these type of coolers are made from polyethelene and specifically lldpe. There's also ldpe, hdpe and a host of others just to confuse the picture. Anyhow, some what made simpler by the fact that both ldpe and lldpe are #4 for recycling and that's the number in the recycle triangle you look for. Ldpe and lldpe are not differentiated so I just had to hope the characteristics are close enough for me for the repair. I had a hell of a time to find ldpe. Milk bottles and most plastic bottles are hdpe and advice is that you can use ldpe to mend hdpe but not vice versa. I think for practical purposes it has to do with melting temp as hdpe is like 10degrees more and if use hdpe to mend ldpe your ldpe will be a mess before the hdpe has even softened. Anyway, it appears that some shopping bags are ldpe and these are the shiny ones not the supermarket ones. I also found some blue lids that were ldpe. So first filled the hole with some insulation. Then, with a heat gun, melted the ldpe to cap the hole. Keeping heat on it smoothed off as best I could. Sanded off remainder. You can also use an iron. Set on dry heat and use baking paper as ldpe will stick. Following pic is result on the inside. Rivet holes similarly repaired.

Next I repaired the external shell similarly to above. then I used pvc pipe to carry a rope handle. Cut the pvc and used heat gun to flatten so that I can rivet to the cooler and result is:

With the missing latch, Evakool sells a pair for $20 plus postage. Can also order from Evakool stockists. Installing a new one entails drilling out old rivets and installing new ones. As I'm missing only the bit that has the elastic, I decided to try and fashion my own using hdpe. So clean one milk carton, cut it up and melt it in my toaster oven on baking paper. I made a mould from some wood lying around. Some 20 odd minutes later the hdpe has melted and working quickly I get this into my mould. The hdpe goes clear when melted but when cooled turns opaque. So when cool, I hacksaw the piece until it's similar to the actual one. Can clean it up but couldn't be bothered. After all it's only for fish. Drilled a couple of holes for the bungy cord. Got a nail that fit into the existing piece that will act as the hinge.

One neat trick was to put a torch on the inside in a dark room. Any gaps will have the light shine thru. Marked the gaps for filling. Had a lot of self stick foam for draught excluder so used that to patch the gasket as Evakool wanted $20 plu $10post for enough metres to redo the lot. Now, I'm doing this on the cheap so I scrounge and use what I already have.

last was the drainer bung. Funny thing was that I had all the bits except the threaded flange. Evakool suggested I buy a complete kit as they couldn't be sure which one will fit the parts I have. While I may do that, in the meantime I used retic poly parts as they fit. A lot of brands are now using the drainage bung and base that are installed in boats and I thought why not. But my drainage hole is less than 22mm and the smallest base cutout is 25mm. So I'm still looking for that.

Sticks out from the body but these parts are cheap and the most likely bit to break will be the riser which costs less than $1

So there you are, one ice cooler refurbished. I'm not finished yet as the corners are a little warped but I've put more self stick foam there.  Three things I'm doing are:

1. make ice packs from 50mm pipe, these line the bottom and can keep your fish or food off any melted water.

2. found that the polystrene boxes which transport tassie salmon are long enough to cut up and fit the inside. They're soft and may not last but I'm using my polycarbonate sheets to reinforce one side. Anyhow, there's plenty free from any of the seafood retailers and you're helping environment by recycling. they wont decompose if thrown in the tip. I cut one up to fit the top of the cooler, reduces total space but need not be used. Another thing is if you have some thin rubber/neoprene you can size a sheet and this will help retain cold.

Oh yeah, in fitting the polystyrene I found that the cooler sides also warped. Not much but it's there so using the polystyrene will help to retain the cold better.

3. When cooler in vehicle in full sunshine it can get a bit hot. So to help insulation and prevent warping, I folded up one of those windscreen reflectors to fit. Just used duct tape to hold the folded corners, easy.

Added fish ruler, source a basket as the holders for the original basket still there but no original basket came with it. Many of the small chest freezers have baskets that fit so just have to scrounge on one verge collection day.

Was just wondering if anyone else is struggling to catch anything decent in metro water lb. iv been fishing the past 6 months and havent had any decent runs. no stingrays nothing. some nights no pickers and havent even had a decent run. has anyone else noticed metro has been quiet becides the odd snapper at the mole lb. iv been bagging out on herring and yellow tail. but thats it. iv even had livies and dead baits and nothings changed. this is a cry for help haha and would like to see if its been the same for other people fishing metro or just me

I know nobody just hands out their secrects but if you could supply a little insight into how to catch pinkies in Cockburn Sound it would be much appreciated.

I've probably had 6 or 7 attemts over the years and had no luck, in fact once i even had my trailer stolen which was fun haha -- Would you suggest to cruise around and search or anchor up at either Pinnicals or D9?

Probably going to get on the water at 5.30pm this evening and try stay out all night depending on how we go.

 I was just responding to an earlier comment and it got me thinking. I wondered what is the most outrageous bait used to catch fish. I have used chicken dusted with parmesan cheese to catch whiting (this weeks first) tomatoes to catch dhuies, potato to catch herring. Anyone want to add to this list.

Arfo and yesterday.armed with some intel from a F.W member we caught 3 nice ones wednesday.back down at sparrows all hyped up we hit the same spot.place just didn't  have the same feel.shity wind bad current between the islands.we cruised the sound got hit with the cold front and we missed the fish on the rock wall. It brightened up so we headed out again.current was still strong so we put small lead on the floaters.BJ said last cast and he got hit and I dropped one.then we got a double, cast out again got another  double, as we were fighting these the other 2 rods got smashed.we landed the 4 of them and kept 4. The d9 was going off at the same time we heard.good thing we perservered. It was a good 2 sessions. So it was back in and on the freeway home.

Have the option to either purchase a new talica 16 single speed or a new torsa 30

their is not much difference between the two, the line capacity is exactly the same, ratio the same, line retrieve the same.

only thing that is different is the weight of the reel

older model tecnology vs newer model technology, but they are probly internally both the same

The reel will be mainly used for droping dead and live baits for kings and samsons, aswell as down rigging/trolling and possibly jigging on the rare occasion.
