BCF Gift Vouchers

A bit of a long shot but...

www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/balcatta/boat-accessories-parts/bcf-gist-vouchers/1116337761

Did anyone see this ad on GumTree? He was initially resposive but now won't return calls/texts. Just seeing whether anyone on here might have grabbed them. I managed to get great price match on a new GPS/Sounder combo from BCF and was planning to use the savings from picking up the vouchers at the same time.

Dhu size limit

Just wondering on peoples thoughts on the current dhuie size limit. Numerous trips over the last few years has shown an increase in the amount of small dhuies out there however that is all they will be imo. With the current 500mm size limit they are getting taken just above this & not too many make it past this size. Again just my opinion. Generally i do not take anything under 600 anyway.

My question is, what if the size limit was raised to 650mm? Going on what's happening at present there would be numerous fish up to 650mm which in turn increases breeding time for a number of yrs from growth of 500mm to 650mm. Also there is not too much flesh on a 500mm but plenty on 650mm.

It may take 5yrs or so for the 500's to grow to 650 so may be lean fishing for a few yrs but in the long run i think it would be beneficial.

Would be good to hear thoughts on this.

Shore Catch Post 4 - Shredded Mulie Burley - Pot/Bucket/Cage Sizes?

We now have a lot of faith that our shredded fish products have market desirability.  We are close to getting the right ratio of shredded mulies/salt/water to produce a good burley product with many different fishing applications.  The freezing point has been lowered to give sufficient longevity, and the final trial will be tomorrow afternoon with the forecast excellent conditions.

It is just fine tuning now as the raw material (10mm x 5mm pieces of mulie) is a proven fish attractor – the product creates the scent of a bait fish massacre, brings in feeding fish but doesn’t provide enough for the bigger fish to get a feed.  The image below is of the blocks that are coming out on an ocean trip tomorrow, for final testing.

The raw material can be moulded and frozen.  We would like to supply it in a form the fits directly into “boat attached” burley buckets and the variety of other burley pots, both commercial and home-made.  We have undertaken preliminary investigations, but Member input now would be really helpful and appreciated.

What size and shape blocks do you think are best to produce?  I would expect there to be at least four products, or possibly more?

Your input and support is appreciated.  Mick

Penn prevail surf rod

hi guys I'm looking at buying a new surf rod and am going to get a prevail in looking at the 12 foot 12 to 20kg or the 13 foot 10 to 15kg but I'm wondering which one to go the 12 foot feels really stiff and the 13foot feels flimsy has any one used the this is just for bait fishing I have a 9foot for lure. Mostly I'm going for tailor mullaway and anything other things that may come my way I'm going up north and may use it to try ballooning but that won't happen often thanks you any help

Salmon in the marina

Dropped in to two rocks marina yesterday and my mate John was fishing off the back of his boat. Said he hooked a salmon earlier and it wrapped him around a pilon. His phone rang and while he was answering it i grabed the rod and gave the little twisty a mighty hurl to near the outlet of the cray shed. A couple of cranks later and i was on. Had an epic tussle on 6lb line with heaps of jumps and a good tail walk. Managed to keep him away from the structures and boats to land my first ever salmon.

Big Circle Hooks

Does anyone know where the far canal you can buy bulk big circle hooks ie commercial style gear here in the west.

http://www.deepdropcommercial.com/fishing-tackle/hooks/

Similar to the above, i'm not interested in buying a pack of 3 for $10, I was hoping to buy some big circles in bulk somewhere hopefully here in the SW but Perth if need be.

Cheers

Do moon phases affect marlin fishing ?

Hello again

Thanks to all those who replied to my previous query regarding marlin fishing in Exmouth

Have been in touch with Eddy from Peak and will go with him

Only issue is that the dates that suit me best in April coincide with the full moon

Now I personally don't have enough experience on this topic but I know that there are some who say that fishing is not as good in a full moon (I don't ever check in Perth, if its a Sunday and the weather is good I'll take the boat out regardless)

If anyone have any experience on this and can advise it would be much appreciated

Regards

R

Help on the Pink Snapper

 Hey guys,

First post here! I love my fishing and my spearing and have got into some really good Baldies and some ok Dhu's in perth metro waters out from woodmans point. Although I have 1 problem with my fishing ability. The Infamous pink snapper.

Due to the current weather, water temp and resident noahs I have moved more into line fishing as of lately, especially for snapper in and around the sound. I seem to be doing everything wrong. The souder does show any fish and I was wondering if maybe a few things were to blame. So i am asking for some help or clarifications on this?

1. does boat noise like prop scare off fish in say 10m of water?

2. if there are no fish on sounder do I bother on the spots in the sound or else where?

3. is it the wrong time in the sound and should focus more on the 5 fathom, rock walls or inshore reefs like stragglers ect ect

All i seem to catch are rays, herring and snook. I usually burley up and float squid down

Safe boating jacket

While I was out fishing on sunday I started thinking about my chances of staying afloat if I happened to fall overboard with the jacket I was wearing. I think I remember Paul talking about some warm boating jackets with a pfd built into them on IFISH. Anyone have anything like this or know where they may be available?

Jack millar how good is that

Snapper release

Just watched the article on australia wide about the snapper kill.Good stuff

Rumour has it

Due to the brits sticking it up the EU the worlds oceans are going to dry up next week and all our fishing gear and boats are going to become worthless.

Oh and the sky is going to fall.

An Aussie winner

Yahoo.. An Aussie has broken the foreign strangle hold on the scum bag stakes (under size crab catchers).

Page 23 of todays "west" on the water section, Graham Noel Gent was sprung with some under size crabs near the old traffic bridge at Mandurah.

Being a fine upstanding type of person he is he targeted two of Australia's finest (female fisheries officers) he used insulting language on them and threatened them on a narrow footpath, forcing them both officers towards a 2 metre drop off next to the water.

Gent then showed the ladies that he fitted the mould of the great aussie athlete by then speeding off on his push bike. Gent was later recognised by the said fisheries officers and arrested by the police.

He was convicted by magistrate Vivien Edwards on two charges of assault and sentenced to two terms of seven months imprisonment (with free board)at a fine WA facility for scumbags and the like.

Now the bad news, the sentences where suspended.

Shore Catch Post 3 - Product Development Feedback Requested

I think it is fair to say that if we didn’t have support from a lot of FW Members we wouldn’t be posting a story like this.  We can’t thank everyone enough for your advice, and encouragement along the way.

We are still slowly developing our full range of products and continuing to refine the strategy for Shore Catch.  From the start we have never intended to be a standard tackle shop, rather provide some specialist products and services that people want using the Fisheries permits and town planning approvals that we have.  The investment in equipment has allowed us to manufacture and pack a number of different fish based products and we are now looking closely at what products we are going to produce.  We will closely examine wholesale distribution of a number of our fish based products throughout tackle shops in the Perth Metropolitan Area in the very near future.

One side of the business that has been popular is the bulk packaged bait to order service for trips away (as mentioned in a previous post, and just contact us if you would like to use this service).  This week I had the opportunity to come up with a mixed bait package for a Member’s trip North (thanks Nathan for the kind gesture on pick up, it was really appreciated).  The idea was to produce a 2kg  “real mixed bag”.  In the end we vacuum sealed in a bone bag, Shark Bay squid, mullet fillet, bonito fillet, scalies and mulies - as shown below.

I have had other people ask about this type of bait product so it was good to test it, and deliver what a customer requested in a bulk order.  I like the idea of the mixed baits but I would really value Members opinion about what baits in what ratios they would like to see us make for retail sale in local shops.  The above pack is a start but I am sure there are plenty of good ideas out there.  I believe a 1kg inshore pack (squid tentacles, squid tube, prawns, blue bait and small mulies/scalies) also has some merit.  Your opinions would be appreciated.

One product that has proven its popularity is the shredded mulies.  We have provided it wholesale to a couple of tackle shops and had multiple orders in a relatively short time.  I have tested its raw properties on a number of occasions and it is one of the most effective fish attractors I have come across (a few recent stories by Mick C about the inshore pinkies demonstrate its worth – and the ones I haven’t written about the action in casting unweighted baits to schools of feeding fish in the burly trail).  It is probably time to expand distribution, and I have been making and testing what may be a desired product as shown below.

This is 5kg of “pure” mulie shred in a slurry so it will freeze down.  We have varied mulie content and determined the best ratio, but the last test will be to change the freezing point to make it melt slower (currently about 75 minutes and target is 90-120 minutes).  We will make those up this weekend, trial them next week and then start to commercially manufacture the week after if there is a positive reaction.

The questions we really have for Members are:

  • Do you think you would buy products like these, and what variations would appeal?
  • If so, what you would consider to be a fair price point for the “2kg Mixed Offshore Bait Pack” and the “5kg Mulie Shred Burley Block”?

We are starting to accumulate quite a few more products that people have been requesting and will publish about these as our showroom display gets closer to finalisation.  We are not finished yet, but it has been good to have the doors open and to meet many Members.  All of the feedback has been invaluable through the continuing set-up phase, and we have commenced work on our catalogue and final showroom design.

Still no word from Fisheries about “shredder for hire charge” so if you have some frames that you would like to shred, and retain the shred, for free please bring them down tomorrow morning.  We will open the shop from 8am on Saturday 25 June, and it won’t be long until we review our hours and open every Saturday morning.

Thanks again for your support and I look forward to any comments.  Mick
