Logging in / out
Submitted by Wannafish on Fri, 2016-06-17 19:40Hi all,
Can someone please provide me with the correct (and legal) procedure for logging in and out on a VHF.
I have a VHF flush mounted into my centre console, but don't have a license to use it (if this is still required), so have never logged in or out... Do I need to sign up with a sea rescue service and get a call sign, or can I use my boats rego number? Will I get fined for using a VHF without a license? Are there online, or face to face courses that I can or need to do?
i am keen to get this sorted so I can start logging in and out, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Boat Defence
Submitted by Endurance Marine on Thu, 2016-06-16 20:16I realise with another person currently missing of our coast, the timing might be not right, however on the other hand highligting ways we can protect ourselves and our boats is none more prevelant I beleive, what with boat/vehicle thefts also increasing. We have been trialling a product we have had or a little while now, and would like to let all the FW community about it.
The BOAT DEFENCE is a series of Tracking, Tracing and Monitoring devices that comes in 3 models.
BD-TRACKER: A standalone IP67 battery operated device (batteries last 5 years) that simply screws to your boat or trailer, and allows you to track it live. Create a boundary around it, and receive SMS/Email alerts if it moves. Ideal for trailers, small boats etc
BD-MONITOR: A tiny device that can monitor your bilge pump/s, battery voltages, shore power connections and even door/hatch entry alerts. Configure the device to be alerted on any condition, and track and trace live through Google maps. Perfect for larger trailer boats, penned or moored vessels - even cars/trucks etc.
BD-OFFSHORE: Similar to the BD-Monitor, however when no mobile reception is received, the device automatically connects to the Iridium satellite network. The IP67 device comes with the functionality of a panic alert to notify a mobile number of your choice. Perfect for those you travel offshore and possibly out of mobile range.
All devices have back up batteries in case of failure, and can be tracked to the last known location. An alert can also be sent if the internal battery does go low though.
As with numerous tracking devices out there, there are ongoing fees which we cannot avoid due to third party costs, however we have kept these as low as possible. We have to charge a yearly fee to cover SIM/SMS/Software costs, however reduces by nearly half after the first year. No contracts or monthly direct debits though. We can do the install for you, and can configure all required alerts.
Please go to www.boatdefence.com.au to find out more and download the MONITOR's brochure. Sorry about the quality of the website though, I made it up really quickly for temporary use until we get a new site made. I understand most will have their own opnions, especially about cost etc, however after being stuck offshore myself in the past (only 9 miles but scary enough being dead in the drink on my own) and always worried about my boat getting towed away from my driveway, I beleive it gives real piece of mind, and the opportunity to track it, if some scumbag ever did take it!
Cheers, Nigel

Personal Locator Beacons and PFD's
Submitted by Coastrunner on Wed, 2016-06-15 15:36What PLB's have members used and can recommend, I see ACR ResQlink Plus, GME MT410G and the McMurdo Fast Find all seem readily available, any forum experince with these or others, the smaller the better without affecting performance. While I'm on the topic of safety any experience or recommendations on self inflating PFD's, I spoke to a local sales guy and he said he had concerns about water splashing on the PFD causing inflation so I stopped the conversation there and didnt bother asking about the PLD, again the less intrusive when worn while fishing the better. Any help appreciated cheers.

help with loading and transferring waypoints on RAYMARINE C120 MDF
Submitted by Muppet on Wed, 2016-06-15 09:38Guys,
I am trying to store all my hardcopy waypoints to my apple mac and then transfer them to my Raymarine C120 multifunctional display.
Does anyone know what format i have to write the waypoints in and which program i can use to do this on and then transfer them.
I am using a cf card seperate to my chart card.
I have looked at free software such as GPS BABEL which converts gps coordinates to many formats, but i am a bit of a numptie when it comes to stuff like this so it aint working.
any ideas ?? (there is a lot of points so i wanted to manage them on my pc rather than sit in the boat and do each one manually)
cheers
Kev.

Guy's getting a boat
Submitted by catchalittle on Tue, 2016-06-14 21:50Well thats one way to get a free boat, the real estate agent should give him a Darwin award at the same time
Last week South African real estate agent Grant Campbell stumbled across this intrepid rubber-tyre fisherman, floating alone two kilometres off the coast of shark hotspot Mozambique.
Now he wants to find him again and give something back.

New second hand boat
Submitted by Hammerhead on Tue, 2016-06-14 20:33Finally got myself a newish boat taken a while (about 3 yrs saving) and a nice upgrade from the trailcraft runabout i had.It had been sitting for three years though, So i spend a day rebuilding the trailer at mums in Busso before i brought it to Perth new discs , calipers etc, pre greased all the bearings the night before, go to put it all together then to find out i have ford hubs with holden bearings as bearings and stub axles just didnt seem to fit right apparently this is common? Oh well rip it all apart and start again at least my mate has a full set of new bearings for his trailer. Its a 650 Southbound centre cab in excellent cond for age just needs a tidy up which im doing now it even came with termites in the cab roof lining which i have removed replaced and re upholstered, will probably have to remove and flush the fuel tank also as the fuel smells a bit off but the Yamaha 150 seem to run fine , cant wait to get it on the water couple of weeks away from that though.

Submitted by sackshaker on Mon, 2016-06-13 18:07Hi all. Can anyone tell me if there is such thing as a lockable, water tight access door? Like the white placcy ones but something a bit more substantial and lockable. Maybe ally or stainless?
Cant find an "off the shelf" example.

Tagged Salmon
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2016-06-12 17:52Ive had no internet for a few weeks due to stuff ups by NBN and a well know
telecommunications company. Any way, back on line now
I caught a few salmon off the beach in Mandurah last month. Great fun on a lure.
One of them had a tag in it. Tag was from NSW which surprised me.
I thought 'bloody hell', surely it hasn't swum that far.
Called NSW fisheries, then filled in a capture form they sent me
Turns out the fish was tagged and released in Mewstones three weeks earlier.
So it hadn't swum very far after all.
Still interesting though, Ive never caught a tagged fish before
Im interested to hear more about who would be tagging fish in WA with NSW tags
The fisheries guy wasnt surprised but id like to hear more about it if any one knows.

Life Cell
Submitted by Wannafish on Sun, 2016-06-12 08:06Gday guys,
The recent tragic boating accident in Coral Bay has got me thinking about what would happen if my boat sunk. Being an old centre console, one wave over the bow and it would be sitting on the bottom pretty quick! I have all the correct safety equipment, however it is stored under the console which isn't ideal at all! My VHF is mounted into the console, so that wouldn't be any good in a quick sinking situation either...
I am considering buying a 'Life Cell' to put my flares / EPIRB in, and also considering buying a handheld VHF to go in it.
Does anyone use a Life Cell in their trailer boat, and if so, which size do you have? Form those that do have one, would I also be able to fit my Shark Shield into it??
Thanks heaps
Drew
