Humongous Ray and Tiger shark.
Submitted by anypuddle on Thu, 2022-01-06 08:34Hit old mate Pirate up for a tiger fishing session last night.
Took my boys down to the beach about 0630, little did i know I was going to have the fight of my life. Got a tailor and some herring on mulies then poured a bottle of fish oil around my rod holders for the waves to lap up.
I had some blue mackerel left over from crayfishing so hurled a whole big fish out on a homemade grapple sinker designed with a metal hook to clip onto the bottom hook to aid casting. 7pm i noticed the big rods line had gone slack so I wound in and hit it. Blistering 300m run had me sure it was a huge shark. Then it took another 100m and settled down and I realised it was a ray. Had absolutely no control and I could see the 20 m of mono backing on my bottom of my spool.
I had to give this beast every ounce of energy I had, after 1.5 hours my hands where cramping and my back was stuffed. Had to sit on the beach and got my 10 year old and 9 year old sons to push the rod up while I heaved back and wound down. Slowly gained about 50 cm at a time.Had a couple of emergency cans of mid strength during the fight.
2.5 hours later the biggest ray and the biggest creature i had ever landed was finally on the beach.. Thank God.
I'm 120kg and this ray dwarfed me. 200 kg and change, the top of its body was like a huge leather back turtle. Released well.
Re rigged and hurled out another 2 kg mackerel, 10 minutes later another big run, this one I could control and with new found confidence in my rod reel and knots I landed my first tiger shark in about 10 minutes. Released.
Used a one piece ozflex i got 20 years ago for winching baldies up at steep point. A lethal 100 ( beast!) Reel loaded with 80lb J braid. 100lb Tiagra leader with a fg knot to the main line.
Thanks Pirate for a great session and gaffing\roping the catches.

Hook type and fish
Submitted by br3nno on Wed, 2022-01-05 12:42Hi All,
Was wondering what everyone's go to hooks are?
Specifically bait fishing.
Personally I keep it simple... (Varying sizes)
Long shanks = whiting, herring, garfish, skippy etc
Mustad big gun = demersals and other large fish
Gang hooks = tailor, surf fishing, drift bait
So what does everyone use?
How much does it matter? Is there a one type fits all?

Had to call fushwatch last night
Submitted by uncle on Wed, 2022-01-05 06:58Took the grandson crabbing last night, and then this mob arrived, tangling pots etc, keeping undersized tailor etc. Called fishwatch some where in Australia they said closest fishos were in hillarys or free, would have been slaughter after we left.

Good day Tuesday
Submitted by sea-kem on Fri, 2021-12-31 13:02Headed out of Ledge early Tuesday morning with about 30 other boats off the beach.
Every spot we tried we caught fish as they were certainly on the chew.
So was pretty happy with this mixed bag and one big dropped by the deckie %$#^$^%$FFS lol
In the mean while two older mates head out from our park off the town beach and within half an hour nail two Bangers one at 10 kg one at 15kg.

3M5200
Submitted by Ericl on Thu, 2021-12-30 06:46Hi
I need to get hold of a cartridge of 3M5200 ASAP. Does anyone know if there is an (open) stockist in Perth. Can get over East from CH Smith, but they are closed till 4th January.
Also, if anyone has used it before, would you recommend fast cure - 24 hours, or 7 day cure. Do they achieve the same final strength ?. I do think I can manage to get the bits in place within 5 to 10 minutes, so less than skin time of fast cure
Cheers for any replies

Shark fishing Fremantle
Submitted by Tyler26 on Mon, 2021-12-27 23:01
Just bought myself a Tyrnos 30 loaded with 500m of 80lb J-braid plus 50m of 100lb mono topshot. I don't have a kayak as yet so I'm limited to ballooning baits. Have read on the freo shire website that "Shark fishing/ ballooning" isn't allowed. Just wanna confirm this as I'd like to give ammo a crack when the winds are right. Pretty new to shark fishing/ ballooning in general so if anyone could help me out with some rough locations to try (not too too far) that would be appreciated. Tips are also welcomed, I've bought some pre made 400lb wire traces but would like to start making my own. Do I need 4m of wire or can I keep it shorter? Some help with ballooning from the beach also would be great.
Cheers!!

Can you camp overnight at the beach?
Submitted by br3nno on Sun, 2021-12-26 20:36Specifically Preston or Myalup.
I read that it may be illegal?
Or is it one of those things that people do anyway for a night and it's OK?

Impeller replacement
Submitted by davewillo on Sun, 2021-12-26 16:09Hi all hope you had a great Christmas!
I fired up my 5hp Yamaha outboard that I use for my inflatable dinghy and there is no water coming from the tell-tale using the hose and muffs. Is this likely to need an impeller replacement? Is that a difficult job as I've never done one before. Is theer any other reason why it would not be working like does the hole sometimes block? Was thinking of going to Rotto tomorrow but not unless I'm confident that I wont cook the motor!
The next thing is where to get one on a public holiday!

Transducers
Submitted by Curndog on Sun, 2021-12-26 14:33Hi fellas,
two part question.. can you run two different transducers side by side for different Sounders or will they interfere with each other?
also I have a Lowrance elite 12 ti with what I'm guessing is just the standard transducer that comes with the unit. Would this be worth upgrading? If so any opinions on what too?
cheers

Anyone ever tried stingers on squid jigs?
Submitted by KalSteve on Thu, 2021-12-23 08:56Has anyone tried stingers on a squid jig? I often get fish hitting the jig but no chance of a hookup.
Will stingers put the squid off? Any weed on the jig spooks them immediately.

bastards
Submitted by piscetor on Wed, 2021-12-22 15:58
I would like to thank the arsehole that drained my fuel tank causing me to run out on the way back from the 5F just as the wind started to blow its guts out.
I had filled the tank (25 ltr ) on my way home ready for the next trip out to pull the pots. Ran out and had to get Sea Rescue to haul me home. talking to the missus and she said she heard someone knocking around the boat at about 21:30 and thought it was me getting the boat ready for the next morning. NOPE, it was some thieveing bastard that left enough for me to go out but not back in. Could have been dangerous if i was in the wrong position..
Now i take the tank out every time i get home. A bloody pain but still i won't lose any more fuel.
