Sounder Course or Training

John Adams has cancelled his sounder courses since the middle of last year and won't be running then in the near future so is there anyone else that runs this sort of training?

Sounder porn and results

Went for a fang today and came across a rather hungry bunch of Spaniards. My deckie pulled out a rubber ducky lure and it was one of the best surface fishing sessions I've ever seen, when those guys are in the chew it doesn't matter what you chuck at em!.

Crabbing - Garden Island/ FFB

Has anyone tried crabbing along the back of Garden Island, in the shallows ?

Or is there to much water movement with the swell etc ?

What about Five Fathom Bank ?

offshore flare kit

Just wondering bought a new offshore flare kit yesterday , noticed when I got home they have different expiry dates . Smoke flares x 2 manufactured date 12/21 expiry 12/24 . parachute flares manufactued date 10/21 expiry 4/25 .

They should all be good for 3 years . Question should I take them back ? I have bought kits before and all had the same expiry date on them .

Cheers

Yesterday’s catch

Nothing huge only three demersals . Actually very hard work current was ripping in the 60s . New way of putting up fish pictures. Few months time it will be birds eye fish finger posts . All jokes aside . My boats costs bugger all to run . People with big boats( I am jealous) will find it harder . Fuel price , bait , beer ect will amount to fair bit . Time will tell, I think price of fishing licence will go up . If or when new rules come in . Who will manage situation ? There going to need more compliance officers .

So new rules

1 dermesal per person. Yep hundreds of dead fish . Let’s see if it’s true . Dumb as crap if real .

PB Queen snapper from last trip

Hi all just wanting to have a bit of a brag ha ha. Pulled this big fella up from 90m NW of two rocks. Fought like a train all the way to the top. Thought it was a shark when first felt him.  Went 86cm on the mat, didnt get a weight, got two big fat fillet slabs off it. Had a quick look online their max size is 98cm. Have got a few in the past but nothing close to this size cheers boys!   brag over

Recommendations for 9" chartplotter

In the market for a new chartplotter.
Order of preferences when considering what to buy;
 - cost $1k to $2k budget.
 - main use as a plotter (replacing old plotter, happy with current seperate sounder unit).
 - hence needs good chart maps for WA coastline
 - fishing mostly metro/two rocks area.
 - prefer 9" size screen
 - touchscreen preferred but not essential.
 - fish finder/sounder and transducer will be considered but of lesser importance.

I'm looking at the Garmin 95sv and comparing other units against that.

If anybody can offer suggestions or their recent experiences with the various map providers, eg. C-map, Bluechart g3, etc... or any other comments on the topic, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Humble Herring(Fisheries Latest)

Herring management

Australian herring is targeted by recreational and commercial fishers and we manage both sectors together to ensure the sustainability of the species.

Herring is a ‘bread and butter’ species to recreational fishers and is most commonly caught from shore or small boats. Recreational fishing is mainly managed through bag and possession limits.

We manage commercial fishing for herring through limited entry, gear restrictions, and seasonal, time and area closures. Over time various Voluntary Fisheries Adjustment schemes, under which the State Government buys back commercial fishing licences, have reduced the number of commercial operators.

Herring is managed to a target catch range, which is based on recent annual catches and also takes into account natural variations in recruitment. Each year, as part of reviewing the state of the herring stock, the actual catch is compared to the target catch.

2015-2021 management measures

A rigorous stock assessment published in 2013 showed that through a combination of environmental factors and fishing the WA herring stock was under pressure, and needed to be protected in order for stocks to return to sustainable levels.

A daily bag limit of 12 for recreational fishers and closure of the commercial South Coast G-net Fishery came into force on 1 March 2015 to ease fishing pressure, and help the stock recovery of this important species.

The 2021 Australian herring resource stock assessment indicated that the management actions taken had been successful and that the stock had recovered. The recovery of the Australian herring resource provides an opportunity to take a contemporary approach to management, which will allow for optimal use and maximise community benefit from the resource.

These new measures have yet to be determined, and in the short-term current management arrangements will remain in place. What is known at this stage is that future arrangements will be based on the herring resource as a whole. This means a management approach that considers the ecosystem in addition to the impacts and needs of all fishing sectors, to ensure that what is taken does not exceed what is sustainable.

Swan River Pinkies

Went for a flick with the kids last night in the Swan River at East Freo.  Caught about 15 baby pinkies. All about 15 20cm.

These normal in the Swan? What's the likelyhood of mum and dad being around?

Fish finders….

Have been out of the circle for a bit now..... what's the go with them? I need to put one in the hull before I flip it and can't seem to find one for under 13k  now there are about 6000 transducers for 5 different types of fishing. Side scan, down view, 3D, chirp, iPhone compatible and all sorts of other shit. So I rang a few dealers and they all gave me a different opinion on what I needed. Not one of them asked me how I was going to install the tranny or even cared for that.

any ideas on who to go see or what to throw in it? I don't need it connected to my phone or the home TV. And I don't want to run 3 transducers off the transom.

Perth Game Fishing Club Marlin Cup - Feb 19 & 20

The Marlin Cup is on again.  Last year was a good tournament with over a dozen marlin raised, and six tagged, mostly around the FADs.

This year the water conditions are looking very favourable again; there's already been two marlin raised around the FADs in the last 3-4 weeks.

If you don't want to fish, Josh Bruynzeel from On Strike Charters in Exmouth is running a marlin workshop at 3pm on Thursday 17th prior to the tournament briefing.  Entry to the workshop is free but you must register.

FREO SHARK FISHING BAN

Anyone ready to explode with news Fremantle Council is set to ban shark fishing?

Flying mack

Great shot, never seen one this high

Saturday's Small Banquet

Managed to put together a little banquet for myself on Saturday morning.

Hit the ramp in the dark and headed up the West side of garden island, sounded around for some activity and ended up putting the pick in at about 5:30 in 9m of water.

Got the burley working hard as only gave myself an hour to fish, had one rod plastic and one rod bait.

Had a couple of pickers playing with the bait early on but then as soon as the sun came over the island and touched the water (no joke could have set an alarm for it) the bite was on!

First run as the first bit of light hit the water was a 58cm pinkie on the bait, perfect.

Next run was on the plastic, went hard but either pulled the hook or didnt set right so nothing to show.

Next two runs were on the bait again, a baby pink probably only 20cm, the next just under at 48cm but he was lucky to make it with a 2.5m tiger right on his tail!

The shark peeled off at the back of the boat as the fish was lifted in, beautiful thing, wish I got a photo of it.

The next and final hook up must have been a decent sized ray, could not get it to turn its head and was just cruising along holding the bottom, busted the hook off and called it with 10 minutes to spare to my 6:30 deadline.

From there cruised up into Herring bay, grabbed a mooring as far South as I could in the bay and geared up to go and chase some Abalone.

Managed to get in the water at 7am on the dot, headed to the rocky outcrop at the South end of Herring bay and spent the hour on the hunt there, couldn't bloody find them haha.

Managed to find two very good sized Abs all on their lonesome (100mm shells) but other than that was slim pickings! Oh well thats what you get for trying somewhere new haha.

Back to the boat and a bit of a chill and swim, put the drone up for a bit of fun since the conditions were just so good then headed back down to Rockingham.

Stopped on the weed just before the ramp at Point Peron and managed to pick up 3 squid on a drift too, back at the ramp before 10am.

Not a huge bag in the end with the single pinkie, 2 Abs and 3 squid but a nice little bit of variety and was such a great day on the water.

Thanks for reading :)

Bait board legs

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me or put me on to the right person.

I bought a new bait board which requires straight rod holders. The existing rod holders on the boat are angled and it's near impossible to remove due to the nuts located inside the hull. I'm thinking maybe the legs of the bait board can be inserted into the angled rod holders then bent upwards to form a 90 deg angle so the board can sit on it level.

Has anyone done this before and who does this sort of work?

Or is there a better solution?

GPS Tracker on Trailer

Just wondering if anyone has recommendations for a GPS tracker mounted on the boat trailer.  Not far off having a new boat delivered and a bit worried about the shiny new trailer disappearing at the ramp.

Fishing Charter Recommendations

 G'days Fisho's.

My wife and I are heading to Christmas island and Cocos island next month.

Any recomendations for fishing charters?

Wife is not a big fishing person so would mainly spectate especialy if it's large models being targeted.

Any other touristy suggestions would be appreciated as well, have a 4wd booked for Christmas island and normal car for Cocos island.

Cheers Wes.

Custom hard top

 Hi fellas,

I posted a few months ago about where to go to get a custom made rocket launcher mad up for boat. Had a couple replies and not much luck sourcing someone willing to do it (everybody too busy) but now I have the canvas peeling off the Bimini over my head. Now I figure I just want a custom made hard top / rocket launcher made up and be done with the canvas. Going on a 21 foot striper. Can anyone suggest where too / who too go for this? Much appreciated

Yamaha Outboard help

 Hi,

Quick question hoping somebody will be able to help with. My 60hp 4stroke yamaha was stalling at idle. Ok when running. Took the cowling off and saw water coming out of a hole on the side of the engine. Looked a little closer and saw that a bolt had fallen out.

Doesn't anyone know what this bolt is for?

I put it back in and engine running as normal. Just wondering if any damage could have been done.

Nice day out,bloody sharks

Had a great day off two rocks yesterday with Eric and ended up with some nice fish,  hooked a couple of beast Dhuies but not long after getting them off the bottom the taxman just smashed them and left nothing but broken rigs; only used a bottom meat one time and probably hooked the biggest shark of my life, after 10 minutes of loosing line and huffing and puffing had to cut the line to make it go away, still good to feel how much grunt the have.
