Who needs to go down south to catch salmon

While all the keen Perth landbased anglers are eagerly awaiting news that the salmon run has started down south, Sherbs and Damo though they would get the jump on everyone and warm up on the recent run of metropolitan salmon.
Sherbs caught his on a parternoster rig, baited with blue bait, fishing in a nice surf gutter, while Damo had his StarloStick in action working metal lures near a reef edge.

For those who aren't aware, there has been quite a good run of reasonable sized salmon in Perth in recent months.
Woodmans Point has held a good school or two, while the northern beaches from Swanbourne to Trigg have all turned up the occassional good size fish.

So if you are keen to get into the salmon this season, why not warm up on your local Perth beach - like Sherbs and Damo.

All the best, Colin Hay

But now thunderstorms tomorrow morning...are you gusy still going to head out?

Newbie

Hi People

Ive been visiting on and off for a while and decided to register.Seem a pretty good bunch here.

Into shore based fishing at the moment apart from the odd trip on my mates dingy whilst camping.

Mainly fish spots on the South Coast when I can get away.

Off to Albany for a week or so at easter.

Andrew

Squiddlies

After a couple of boxes of squiddlies but have only seen ones with monsters in them.

Are there any about with the smaller ones, or is this a seasonal thing??

Top Websites

Well after a couple of years working in the "wilderness" I have to say that this seems to be one heck of a great website.

I'm sure users will agree that this is as good or better than any regional fishing forum anywhere in the world so kudos to the folks that created FishWrecked. The photos in this month's comp are way better than anything I've seen in newspapers so it goes to show how amazing the web is going to be for sports like fishing.

Hope you folks enjoy my new shows. We've worked really hard to make them as useful as possible.

Cheers,

Steve.

For all the lefty boaties

Ive been playing around with my Saltist 30T. A friend of mine have been looking around for a quality compact reel without paying an arm and his left testicle.

After about 30mins.....Ive managed to convert my right hand wind Saltist to a left hand wind reel!!

Many thanks, Colin Hay

SHERBS GIVES US A TOWELLING

Sherbs, Uncle Stu and I decided to try our luck down to a local beach last night - with reports that some reasonable sized salmon were continuing to be caught in the area.

With Seabreeze predicting 12 to 16 knotts and a rising tide, it was looking good for a nice evening and night session.

Unfortunately we arrived to the find the first part of the equation had been blown out the window, with the seabreeze breeze close to 20 knotts and growing stronger.

That blew out my plan to try a little hole next to the reef where I knew salmon had been holding up.

However, from the car park we could see that there was a nice gutter next a large rip straight in front of the surf club.

We set up shop and Sherbs hooked a herring first cast. The hole we were fishing looked fantastic, however, there was a fair bit of weed floating around which was making the conditions tricky with the ever increasing wind.

Damo and his father-in-law soon joined us and headed off to try their luck with some metal lures in the spot near the reef.

Apart from the wind it was a beautiful evening with a spectacular sunset - and the fish seemed to be around with Sherbs hooking a nice little mullet.

Then he caught a great, early season salmon.

Then he caught another herring, and another herring and another herring, etc. It was a masterly performance of surf fishing in trying conditions.

While Sherbs was knocking up catching fish, and Damo had picked up a nice little salmon from his metal tossing, Uncle Stu and I were building up a sizeable pile of seaweed along the shoreline.

We managed to stay on until about 9.30 pm, with Sherbs landing a few more herring and Uncle Stu and I continuing to build our weed piles.

I did manage one good run on a fillet of Sherb’s mullet, but my braid parted pretty early in the fight. That was the way things were going. I had caught Adam Galash’s “no fish mojo”

All in all it was a good evening. Given the right conditions, there looks to be some real promise in that spot.

Good onya Sherbs for a top performance. Well done on the salmon on the metal lure Damo.
Uncle Stu was hindered by a lack of heavy enough sinkers. Me, no excuses, just a poor performance.

I will asdd some more pics later. All the best, Colin Hay

Charter tomorrow

Ok, so I just booked with blue juice for tomorow, they only have 7 people booked for the day so will cancel unless they can gather up another 3 bodies. If anyones interested in fishing give em a ring, Looks like not too bad weather, and a chance to get on a charter without it being fully loaded with people.

Have a good one,

Backup motor

I have been working for months to get the battered old Quinny out on the Bay and as my post of yesterday said last Sunday was the day but turned pooey due to a circlip falling off the fuel port. Although i was able to get a tow back to the ramp, i don't feel i will always have that luxury and don't want to put anyone out. So - i am looking at getting an auxillary - the boat is 4.4m with currently a 35hp Evinrude tiller steer. I have looked at a few sites in regard to a 12v electric long leg. I have a Powerpak jump start unit of 600 amps and would rather use this as i have no electrics on the boat. A standard small outboard doesn't appeal due to weight and bulk. Can anyone advise if this is feasible?

Towing Mobile -

hi Team!

Got a question for you all you boaties - what makes a good towing car?

i know the simple answer is power/torque and factory recommendations - but i am sure there is more than meets the eye.

My story - I purchased my own boat last year cause i got annoyed my dad didnt take the boat out enough. When i purchased the boat i had just swapped my wrx to a cheaper economical car (civic). Alas, I am somewhat dependent on my old man cause i need to borrow his work ute to tow my boat.

Well its time to get rid of the civic, fuel prices have gone down a bit and the sports bug is biting me again. Which comes to my second question - can i use such cars as wrx, lancer evo's, to tow boats? Both cars are AWD but would towing a boat ruin my suspension? I envisage taking the boat down south and up north this year as well.

Right now im gearing towards are forrester XT or a CX7...but there are some wicked bargins for 2nd hand cars atm...
and the boat in question is a 4.8m centre console!

whats an 'acceptable' size whiting?

ive been getting out on the weekends more often for a fish down in mandurah, freo and woodmans point.  Normally chase herring and whiting.  Now I know a good size sand and yellowfin whiting is +30cm.  and KGs need to be 28cm but a decent size is +35.  But what do you guys consider an accpetable size of the school whiting that seem to be everywhere in terms of keeping for a feed.  Seem to be catching heaps in the 17-18 cm size and get some strange stares for throwing them back.  Seem to be a heaps around so not endangered.  4-5 would make for a semi decent feed with some vegies.

So what do you think?  keep em or throw em.

2 rocks

The one that got away sort off. I was lazy and didnt take my own gear out this morning so i just used my brothers gear. had been fishing a while and had a 2 baldie and a black ass, when i got a good fish on only to break off shortly after. was mad with my brother when i brought up my line only to find 1 of his knots had come undone so we went around for another drift over the same ground and my brother got into a good fish a nice dhuie went 23 pounds and the bugger had my hooks in it from the previous drop bait still intact.  me and my brother last week out off 2 rocks not a bad mornings fishing. s609.photobucket.com/albums/tt171/1994zzr/

Ideal tacklebag

I was fortunate to receive this bag, which is being marketed as a Miner's Tool Bag, to do a review on today. I instantly thought, perfect tacklebag.
It is made of super heavy duty, water proof, vinyl and has heaps of pockets.

I am thinking of making a few additions to it, such as stitching on some thick elastic that will me to strap a two piece rod to it.

Does anyone have any suggestions of things they have thought they would like to see in a tackle bag.

I will be using it for landbased fishing.

Many thanks, Colin Hay
