Upgrading sounder
Submitted by bouttime on Sat, 2007-04-14 16:12After some advice on what sounder to look at. I am currently using a lowrance 107cdf which is great for finding fish in water up to 200mtrs but once past that depth i cant find bottom. This was a pain when i was up north as i wanted to try some deep water jigging and baits in 300-400mtrs. Also looking to fish this water off perth. Also handy to find bait schools in deep water.
Need a sounder thats going to find the bottom in depths up to 500mtrs. Lowrance claims 760mtrs but came nowhere near this. I know i will be looking at a sounder with a 1kw transducer but what they claim and what they actually do are 2 different things.
Does anyone use a sounder that has been out in these depths and been able to find bottom.
Not to fussed on brand as long as it does what i need it to do.
Cheers

Easter - Onslow
Submitted by billy chase on Tue, 2007-04-10 16:42Gday,
Just got back from Onslow. Unfortunately we only got amongst it 2 days out of five, but it was better than sitting at home in Tom Price for the Easter break! It wasn't firing as much as we'd liked, but as they say 'A bad days fishing, beats a good day at work'!!!!
Good weather on Friday made the ride out to Penguin Bank nice, quick and easy with the Spaniards liking the teasers more than our lures, only boating one Mac around 6kg. A bit of a bottom bash in the vicinity, and a few size Reds and some nice spanglies were on deck. Running out of light, we headed for Rosily, where we anchored for the night. Sambo went diving on dusk and managed a few painted crays for dinner. With the crays and a few Spangleys cooked up for dinner and a couple of cold cans and we were living like kings!
Waking early on Saturday after a good feed of bacon and eggs, we headed to 'spot X'. Along the way we had boat problems which forced us to head back to Onslow for a few quick repairs. The repairs made everyone a little too thirsty, so we ended up rehydrating(?)! From there, a fuzzy plan was made to start early and get the boat on the water and do an overnighter the next day.
Due to low tide in the morning, we ended up getting the boat in around 8AM. The wind overnight chopped the water up a fair bit, so we made the dash to Anchor Island. Along the way picking up a small tuna and a big Gold spot on the troll. We did a bit of trolling and flicking in close to Anchor, staying out of the wind, and with no luck, decided to head from Anchor and have a bottom bash. Around the high tide a good red hit the deck and a few spangleys. After a while a couple of Dolphin fish rocked up in the burley trail. After trying to flick Lasers, Trihos and any other smallish lures, Todd hooked up with a floating bait. This one was a big fella and gave a few big jumps 5 metres from the boat and a good tussle on his Cacutta 200. Unfortunately a dodgy gaff shot and the big fella was away to fight another day, much to Todds disgust(still yet to boat a Dolphin fish)! Sambo hooked up to one on his Calais baitcaster and did well to boat him on 4kg. As Sam was hooked up I was bringing my bottom rig up and one decided to jump on. After 5 min tussles, both fish were boated. After a bit more bottom bashing, we decided to call it a day and head back to Ashburton. Todd rang his missus to get an overnight forecast. It was decided to head back into Onslow as it wasnt sounding too good with 20knt+ SW. we made the dash back in and with the low tide, were forced to anchor up in Beadon Creek, cook a feed and have a sleep, waiting for the tide to come in (just after midnight) to drive the boat back on the trailer.
All in all, a great trip was had by all. Shame it was only two days as Monday turned out to be a good day, till it blew up a bit in the arvo but I got to see a few things that I have never seen before. The colours and the show that the Dolphin Fish put on and the sight of big Macs caining the teasers will certainly stay with me for a while, im just spewing I didnt get any video of it. Maybe next time!
PS: I iwll post some pics when I learn how to!
cheers

great fight on the sol
Submitted by Vander72 on Mon, 2007-04-09 20:02had a great day sunday down at eagle bay....lots of people every where in every possible vantage spot close to the water...i found a spot on a rock away from everyone and waited patiently for the salmon to swim past...i only had my bream rod (no room in the car with 3 kids as well ) but i perservered by starting with just a twisty lure... a few schools swam past to no avail..they looked at it but didnt take it...i then changed to mulies and with great success...4 schools swam past in an hour and i had 4 hook ups....what fun it is with 2.7kg braid on the bream rod and the sol handled them with ease....each fish was back at the rock in 15min and it was hard on the hand holding the rod but well worth it....each fish was nice and fat...roughly 5 to 7 kg and full of life thinkin they could get away from me....hehehehehe....i recomend it to anyone to grab a small rod and put it to the test....mine certainly handled it great.....i got asked once why i paid nearly $500 for the set up and it was answered yesterday.....silenced the critics i reckon and i can go back and do it all again....hope everyone else had a good weekend......

RST from April 1st for Under 25's
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sun, 2007-04-08 10:51This is late notification, but it is here to serve as general notice - Adam Gallash
Recreational Skippers’ Tickets required from April 1, for under-25s.
New recreational boating laws requiring people under the age of 25 to have a Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (or RST) if they are in charge of a vessel, will be enforced throughout Western Australia from tomorrow (April 1).
All other recreational skippers will be required to have an RST from April 2008.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the laws had been introduced to improve boating safety, by ensuring that skippers had the basic skills needed to protect themselves and their passengers and shared the water safely with others.
“The need for better safety education for boat owners has been reinforced by the high number of boating incidents and deaths during the summer,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Since June last year, more than 110 boating incidents, including 10 fatalities from six recreational incidents, have been reported to the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.
“This is much higher than the WA average of five boating-related deaths each year.“
The Minister said more than 48,000 tickets had been issued since the initiative was launched in February last year.
“The majority of the 45,000 experienced recreational skippers who were offered a special exemption from the practical assessment for the RST took up the offer before it expires tomorrow,” she said.
“Another 15,000 people have been issued with an RST in recognition of their BoatSmart, TL3 or TL5 certificates.
“Those who did not take advantage of these offers will now face additional assessment to be issued with an RST.”
From tomorrow, it will be against the law for a person under 25 to be in charge of a recreational vessel more than 4.5 kilowatts (6HP). A first offence attracts a fine of $200 and repeat offenders face a court prosecution where a magistrate could impose a penalty of $500 or more.
People wanting more information about the RST can contact 9216 8966 or log on the Department for Planning and Infrastructure website: http://www.dpi.wa/gov/imarine

Fishing Dampier Tomorrow
Submitted by jay_burgess on Sat, 2007-04-07 20:36Heading out with a family friend tomorrow (Still haven't got our new boat). Been a good 6 weeks since we've been out and I'm getting withdrawls. Weather forecast looks the goods.
Morning
Light winds with a slight chop. Small long period swell.
Winds: SSE 6 to 8 knots
Seas: WNW 2 feet at 12 sec.
Afternoon
Light and variable winds with smooth seas. Small long period swell.
Winds: NNW 5 to 7 knots
Seas: WNW 2 feet at 12 sec.
The plan is to do a bit of jigging (macks, trevally, cobia, tuna..) and also have some baits in to get some good table fish. After that we'll hopefully do some trolling for macks and possibly go for some sails.
Will report tomorrow.

What a day!
Submitted by SPESS on Wed, 2007-04-04 12:00Went out at 4am this morning to have a quick bottom bounce with some mates. While unloading the boat i slipped off the oceanreef jetty and fell in getting soaking wet, much to the amusement of my mate! Then when rigging up on the boat i dropped the brand new fishing pliers into the drink! By this stage i was cold and pissed off! I finally dropped down 2 snelled squid on my new jigging rod (3 months old used twice!) As i was free spooling it down to the bottom it started to speed up immensely so i chucked it in gear and went to strike when "BANG" my new rod snapped about 12inches down on the 3rd bind! I got it back, then we decided to head home, fishless! Oh what a day, going home from work to get drunk and cry!

Fish ID cards
Submitted by jd on Tue, 2007-04-03 16:29On a recent trip to Sweers Island I saw a set of fish identification cards. They were about the size of a normal deck of playing cards, made out of plastic and riveted in the corner so you could flick out which ever card you wanted to look at. They had a colour picture of the fish you wanted to identify, if they were good eating, noxious etc. Has anyone seen these before?? Does anyone know where you can pick them up from??
Need tips for Sunshine Coast
Submitted by desmond on Sat, 2007-03-31 11:51Hi all,
Finally leaving Jandakot Airport and moving to Sunshine Coast Airport, Marcoola, QLD in a couple of months. Never been to the East Coast.
Heard there is good fishing around there. Any tips for someone without a car ... ... and without a boat? I will be staying walking distance from the airport.
Do I need surf gear?
What can I get around there from foot? Will anything the the water eat me?
Anyone into flyfishing?
And anyone know of a good forum (like this one) that is based there?
So far i'm planning on bringing a 9ft rod that can cast 40grams and a Technium loaded with 16lbs braid. Also can't decide between a #5, #8 or #10 WT fly rod.
Any help would be great. I keep moving, so can't carry too much - i'm supposed to be training and will only be there for a few months before moving again.

Day out with Alfred!
Submitted by SPESS on Fri, 2007-03-30 09:32Myself and honsu ventured out with alfred yesterday upon his 18" boston whaler centre console. We arrived at the oceanreef marina around 9ish with plans on heading out to the fads. The easterly's didnt let up so we headed off to tworocks for a bit of bottom bouncing. alfred put us onto some awsome ground with plenty of large lumps and coral ground but to no avail nothing come up but scorpin cod and sergent bakers. We tryed for a few hours at different spots but to my surprise nothing wanted to play the game. Honsu and i desided to fish light and send down drift baits of snelled whole squid but this also didnt get much appart from a few large hits which were dropped. Honsu did rather hook into something unstopable after talking line and playing dirty it busted him off under the boat. Alfred then did the same fishing the bottom, hooked into something which was dropped. With no luck we headed back into the marina with a quick stop to view alittle hammerhead baking in the sun (which took off on our arrival)and then fished some ground near cray pots which produced some awsome wrasse, NOT! All in all it was very pleasent meeting and fishing with Alfred and catching up with Honsu once again. Two great guys and hopefully we have better luck soon. Thanks guys i still enjoyed getting out on the water. Cheers Chris.

Penn Torque 300 Test
Submitted by Gully on Wed, 2007-03-28 09:22Well to say the least these new reels are amazing.
Mine rigged with 80lb platypus superbraid performed like no other and is without a doubt the best reel I have ever used!!!! The amount of drag and pressure you can impart on a fish is sweet and the speed of retrieve is beyond belief. As Adam said when a shark tried to taste my nice red it was simply a matter of upping the rate and the red just flew past the shark and into the net.
What is also great about the reel is as the same suggests is the torque. Most high speed reels when under load can be a bitch to turn the handle but not with this one - it just keeps on going, and believe me I gave it the workout of its life with a 7 odd foot shark fully locked up for 1 and a half hours. Jeez I love this reel :)))
I have it matched to a custom 80lb jig stick (a hastings blank I think) from campbells and the rod is fantastic aswell and perfect for the reel although when I was cleaning it one day a nice sliver of coating decided to splinter off the rod and lodge itself nicely into my thumb. A knife and 20mins later it was finally removed so SHIZZA I will be back to get that bit fixed up. Apart from that though the rod is faultless and I cant wait to get it out to the sambo grounds and heave some up - they do not have a chance at all.
So there you have it it is the ultimate combo and well worth the money.
Cheers
Gully

Spess's joke time again!
Submitted by SPESS on Tue, 2007-03-27 17:08WHY FISHING IS BETTER THAN SEX!
When you go fishing and you catch something, thats good! If your having sex and catch something thats very bad!
Fish dont compare you to other fisherman and dont want to know how many other fish you have caught!
In fishing you lie about the one that got away, In sex you lie about the one you caught!
You can catch and release a fish and then you dont have to lie and say you'll stay friends after you let it go!
You dont have to necessarliy change your "LINE" to keep catching other fish!
You can catch a fish on a 20 cent soft plastic, if you want sex it costs you atleast a movie and dinner!
Finally fish dont mind if you fall asleep while your fishing!
Until next week this is spess's joke time!
