Metro Weather Forecast 20/21st Jan
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2007-01-19 14:55Saturday: SE'ly winds 15/20 knots reaching S/SE 20/30 knots offshore until sunrise. Winds throughout becoming E/SE 13/18 knots during the morning before shifting S'ly 18/23 knots in the afternoon. Seas 1.5m to 2.0m. Swell 1.0m to 1.5m.
Sunday: E/NE winds 15/20 knots easing to 10/15 knots late morning. Winds shifting S/SW 15/20 knots in the afternoon.
Looks like Saturdays going to be a blowout, but there is potential for Sunday to get better. Hopefully it will drop out a bit as north easters make for terrible seas mixed with a south west swell. Keep your eye on Sunday, might turn out to be ok for a mid morning fishing mission. Make sure you only go out if you feel comfortable with the conditions thou!!!
Tight lines. ;)

Fishing the Great Australian Bight
Submitted by Paul H on Fri, 2007-01-19 11:40Hi All,
As a South Aussie angler I was wondering if anyone can share some stories, tips, pics and anything else from trips to the Great Australian Bight area.
Particularly interested to hear if anyone has come across to the South Aussie side of the Bight but happy to hear anything from the Perth side as well. I have read a few articles in mags over the years and the fishing seems much the same on both sides.
I tow our boat the 800km or so from Adelaide to Streaky Bay/Smoky Bay each year or two and have previously done a few land based trips to areas such as Cactus Beach, Fowlers Bay/Scotts Bay etc. Have targeted mostly Snapper and King George Whiting from the boat and Salmon, flathead, and Mulloway (which have so far eluded me) from the land. Usually take the boat with Dad (who is a table fish only person and hard to convince to fish for anything else) so looking forward to going this year with a mate to try the other (bigger) things on offer in the area (tuna, kingies and Sambos etc).
One of my best memories - arriving at the top of the cliff at the western end of Scotts Bay. There is a little beach with a fringing reef on all sides that funnels out through a 2 metre wide channel (think upside down funnel with the funnel being sandy and the rest reef). It was low tide and the reef was only just covered with water. There was approx 10 or so salmon swimming up and down the beach about 2-3 metres out from the shore with 3 guys on the beach frantically trying to catch the Salmon. They heard our yelling a pointing but couldn't work out our commotion until we got down to the beach to point out to them the three x metre plus kingies cruising around the entrance/exit through the reef. Proceeded to cast all sorts of lures/poppers etc at them to be totally ignored apart from a few short follows. This was probably lucky as it was a long walk in and I only took my light salmon rod (which is basicaly a slightly heavier version of my trout rod) with me and never stood a chance - but I just had to try anyway.......

Increasing S.W Fisheries Infringements
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2007-01-17 09:14Spate of summer infringements worry South Coast Fisheries officers
A spate of fishing law infringements and warnings to recreational fishers, during patrols along the South Coast this summer, has raised concerns with Department of Fisheries officers.
Southern Region Compliance Manager Peter Godfrey said the number and nature of the prosecutions, infringements and warnings given out by Fisheries officers this summer was concerning.
“The rules that are in place in various fisheries are there to make sure there will be fish for the future and every time someone breaks them it means they are not only ignoring the need for sustainable fishing practices, they are also being greedy,” Mr Godfrey said.
“We had one case recently in which a fisher was found with double his bag limit of greenlip abalone and another person, dealt with in the Albany court before Christmas, had three times the bag limit of skippy.”
“Today in the Albany court, a Kojonup man was fined more than $370 for taking excess salmon and two fishers allegedly found in possession of 120 Roe’s abalone, which amounts to each of them having 40 abalone in excess of the individual possession limits, had their cases adjourned and moved to Perth’s Central Law Court for mention on 12 February.
Mr Godfrey said the community expected the Department of Fisheries to monitor compliance with fishing laws and he also encouraged people to call the FishWatch line on 1800 815 507 to report suspected illegal fishing activity.
“The possible fines for breaching fishing rules are large and fishers should be aware that we appreciate the quality information that comes through to us, particularly when callers include vessel and vehicle registrations, which help us identify possible offenders,” he said.
“Our FishWatch illegal fishing reports’ service helps the community to help us apprehend those who do the wrong thing.
“Department of Fisheries patrols will continue along the South Coast and I’m hoping the reality that fishers face large fines for breaching the Fish Resources Management Act will serve as a warning to all fishers.
“We have already issued 18 infringements and 15 warnings this summer, including some for the marron season that opened on Friday and we are determined to get the message across that Fisheries rules are there for sustainability of marine and freshwater resources.”

Good avo on sharks
Submitted by fishyink on Tue, 2007-01-16 13:00sunday night we decided to go out to the first reef of mandurah at 3pm. we started fishing and saw this dark brown neally black figure moving across the water and some one shouted shark. imediatly we started to chuck some cut up mulies in the water and scrambled around to rig up the 150 leader and a big hook with a whole pilchard. me mate casted it out about 15m it hit the water and the waiting game was on a good 10 seconds befor he could get it in the rod holder, we all heard this awsome sound of of the spool spinning, drag working and the rachet going off, lotsa screeming for joy was going on "yes were on", "its heading for china". about 15 minutes it was close enough to see what it was , a hammer head shark. gaff ready the shark was brought to the side of the boat and gaffed now this is were all that time sitting in fron of the tv wathcing wrestling comes into it. after wrestling the shark on the deck of the boat watching our toes for a couple of minutes we managed to get it under control.
We caught hammer head shark(kept) 1 bango(kept), 2 port jacksons huge(released), a wobby/carpet shark (released), 2 eagle rays. disapointing 1 rock cod. and pleny of hook ups but 150 pound leader wasnt enough got bitten through.

Sound to Reopen to Snapper Fishing
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2007-01-11 14:50Department of Fisheries Media Release:
The Sounds reopen to pink snapper fishing tomorrow.
Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds will reopen to pink snapper fishing tomorrow (Thursday 11 January 2007).
Late last year, the Department of Fisheries extended the annual spawning closure to provide adequate protection for the largest known spawning aggregation of pink snapper on the West Coast of Western Australia.
Fisheries Management Officer Nathan Harrison said he was pleased with the support and understanding from fishers, who realised the need to extend the closure and protect the breeding stocks at a highly vulnerable time.
“We had an unusual set of environmental conditions that delayed the spawning activity from its normal pattern,” Mr Harrison said.
“It is important when there is a fishery like this, so close to the metropolitan area, that we monitor it carefully and manage it in a sustainable way.
“Ongoing monitoring indicates the majority of pink snapper appear to have now finished spawning.
“As a result the spawning closure will end at midnight tonight (Wednesday 10 January).”
Mr Harrison said Department of Fisheries compliance officers had also issued a number of infringements against fishers during the short window in which the pink snapper fishing was allowed last month, before the spawning closure was reimposed.
“Some of the fishers were breaching the bag limit and taking more than one of the larger sized pink snapper, over 700mm, which is breaching a rule specifically designed to limit the take of the larger breeding stock – some of which are more than 20 years old,” he said.
“The daily bag limit for pink snapper is four and only one of the fish can be more than 700mm – on the West Coast the minimum legal size for pink snapper is 410mm.
“Fisheries and Marine Officers will be looking closely at bag and size limits for pink snapper, particularly in next few months.
“Our management decisions and the rules that apply in the fishery are about preserving pink snapper stocks, so the opportunity to go fishing for such a popular fish species is still there in the future.”
Please report all suspected illegal fishing activity to FISHWATCH -

Dhufish schools
Submitted by SPESS on Tue, 2007-01-09 09:47While Dhufish are a common topic, I was wondering if anyone has heard about this before. I was reading a fishing mag the other day and it commented on that if you are to located a school of dhufish small or large, and you take away (catch) the domanent male the rest of the school will shut down. return the fish and they will continue to bite. Is this true, sounds reasonable enough.

Baitrunner 4500
Submitted by lighterthief on Mon, 2007-01-08 14:42Does anyone know if the 6500 and big baitrunner have stronger drags than a 4500?? fished between chidley point and rocky bay last night and about 2 am hooked up and got spooled in about 20 seconds, all 300m 30lb braid gone and also managed to melt and destroy the drag... reckon it must have been a big stingray but of all the rays ive caught never have i hooked any that go that fast... Just as i was looking at the broken reel the second baitrunner goes off exactly the same though this time it only got about 50 m before dropping the bait.
