Sounder image
Submitted by gruntre69 on Mon, 2017-10-16 10:55Went out for a last fish before the ban yesterday. I was mostly interested in learning to drive the EVO3. We found quite some good fish shows but the bite was quiet most of the day. Ended up with a good pinky, small dhu a small grey band and a few large skippy. So the lads were happy.
I took this shot west of Rottnest. Anybody know what this could be. I'm thinking bait fish because we didn't get a bite..
Left is P66 at 50hz
Right is totalscan at 83hz chirp

Wondering if anyone has any tips on where to find Tailor south of the river. I've tried Mewstones the other day around mid morning using a Gillies white bait metal lure but no luck there.

Canal Rocks boat ramp.
Submitted by Howard George on Mon, 2017-10-16 10:16There are plans afoot for the Department of Parks and Wildlife to close canal rocks boat ramp because they claim it is too dangerous for boaties to use. This is the only boat ramp that Marine rescue can use on the west coast and have strongly opposed the closure so DPaw now say that it could be gated so that you would need a key to use it. A lot of recfisho's use this ramp in the summer time and us rec fisho's need to come out strongly and object also to the closure. I suspect it's got nothing to do with safety but more to do with protecting the Marine parks. Don't sit back and be quiet on this issue or else we will lose it.

Floater Rig
Submitted by Fishn n Ridin on Mon, 2017-10-16 09:34Could I please get some opinions, and maybe criticism, on the rig I use with a float?

That is just a normal line (not a leader) running down from the float, connected to the two trace leaders, one halfway down and one at the bottom and the smallest sinker possible to keep it down

First day of cray season - freediving
Submitted by Notorious on Sun, 2017-10-15 19:32So we were expecting crystal clear water after 2 days of low wind and low swell. Boy were we wrong. The ocean was very dirty and very surgey. Inshore visability was about 3-4metres. Thoughts of a lurking great white was in the back of my mind all day in light of recent sightings. Freediving was hard work being bashed around the ledges and caves.
We dove 3 spots, all west of Garden Island, crays were found shelting from the surge either deep under ledges, on the leeside of the surge (facing east) or deep in caves. Depths ranged from 14m, 6m and 4m.
No shed shells, no double shells or white crays yet.
16 crays, 2 freedivers and first bagout on my mates new dingy.

I am reletively new to offshore fishing and looking to get started into some pinkies and sambos and other demersal species l will mainly just be drifting around with paternoster style rigs and maybe dropping some soft plastics down. What type of spin reel and rod would you recommend for this type of fishing my budget is $200 not including line what type of line is better for this type of fishing? Also l want to stay light as possible but it can still handle sambos?
Thanks

Geo Bay Magic
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2017-10-13 18:32Headed out to the 30s off Meelup to get some big sandies but got plagued by small flatties but were greated by several whales playing all around us which enchanted the Mrs and the kids.
Managed to jig a squid that followed up a flattie and headed inshore for a swim where I had a flick with a minnow only to get monstered by a huge school of 35cm+ salmon on my 4lb line on my 1000 reel and 1-2kg rod. Brilliant fun. Dropped the crew off to chase some more squid and ended up with a baby I plan to drop down tomoz.

Powerdive or similar hookah hire
Submitted by Dean78 on Fri, 2017-10-13 16:43Was dead keen to hire a Powerdive for an upcoming weekend at Rotto but Powerdive in Mosman Park no longer hire them. Anyone know any other places could hire one or a similar device to float along surface?
Not so keen on lugging several scuba kits over for shallow 5m dives. (tried free diving last years trip)
Any tips would be appreciated. Unable to justify the purchase of one as will not get enough use.
Dampier bottom fishing
Submitted by toddjf73 on Fri, 2017-10-13 12:02Recently moved to Karratha and purchased a 5.5M tinnie. Getting some Spaniards and spearing some fish but not having much luck with the bottom fishing.
Any tips for spots without having to go 60-70km's offshore. Have been mainly fishing the gas pipeline without much success.

Thre people pulled from water
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2017-10-12 19:11The cray season hasn't started yet and already we have three people getting themselves into trouble out on the water according to channel seven news tonight.
Lets hope that this is not going to be a regular event as people throw caution to the wind and risk it all for a feed, no details about how it happened (or I missed it) lucky they were wearing life jackets and had set of an epirb which enabled them to be found quickly.

Off Hillarys today
Submitted by Ryan C on Wed, 2017-10-11 19:08Went out solo today as my deckie was worn out ! Ended up in the 40s of hillarys jigging blue Macks out of a 25m thick school on baitjigs for the freezer ( future bait ) then went to one of my sambo lumps for some arm stretching! Freezer is chock full of bottom fish so I wasn't really interested in any today , sambos were thick and got bigger and bigger until I'd caught one on all of the outfits I had onboard and I'd had enough. Good day out had fun. Saw Zoom (Fw member ) out there too.

Bunbury Pink
Submitted by Aquadisiac on Wed, 2017-10-11 07:46Managed to sneak a line in while checking some fuel issues on the boat on Monday off of Bunbury.
Didn't go too far as I'm not convinced I'm over them yet but managed to pick up a nice pinky at about 970 long and dropped a couple other good fish.
Got a few undersize snapper and a couple big skippy.
Not bad for a couple hours run.

Wind Effect On Casting
Submitted by Fishn n Ridin on Tue, 2017-10-10 21:44I have been fishing off Coogee jetty quite a lot in the evenings and the wind has been quite strong. This has resulted in the line going out 90 degrees to my side (with the sinker being cast out in front of me) when I cast. The other fishers I've seen there casting out have had their line go straight out in front following their sinkers perfectly in the same conditions (still spinning reels, not baitcasters). I have tried Sealine 12lb line, Pre-test 4kg, Penn Mariner 20lb line, Gillies 8lb line and an old 10kg polyamide line and all have had the same problem. All those lines are mono, would braid help? What can I do please to help my line cast better in strongish winds.?
Thanks

N.S Blackhole Blackwater Egi Rod
Submitted by Alex15733 on Tue, 2017-10-10 16:34hey guys, ive made a few egi forums before and got advice and now ive finally went and tried a rod. I was eging with my normal rod and another fisherman was near me who was also eging and he looked like he knew what he was doing (im still pretty bad at egi) so i asked him about his rod and it was the NS blackhole the one i was opting for so i asked if i could have a try, he let me it felt sturdy and had god action and weight.
so my point is have any of you had the rod and is it durable and reliable? And i cant find out if its carbon or graphite or something else if its carbon ive never had a carbon rod what is different with them
Thanks For All The Help On The Egi Forums Ive Made
-Alex
