Coral Bay 2017

Another year has come and gone and the hope for glassy weather was soon evaporated in the week leading up to the trip with absolute rubbish forecast for as long as we could see. The previous two July school holidays were also windy and proved to be hard work. In the lead up to this years trip, we all commented 'surely we cant have 3 years in a row of shit weather..' how wrong we were. Over the course of the two weeks, the wind dropped under 10 knots for two days, with the majority of days being in the 18-24kn range.

Undeterred and with the view of the fish arent going to catch themselves, we ventured out most days into the unhappy sea with at times more white water then not and the tops being blown off passing lumps of water. We were drifting over 1kn most days and had to up the amount of lead to hold bottom.
We spent the majority of our time out in the 120-140s chasing goldband. We did well on the reds earlier in the year at a different location so we were all keen to hunt golds. Most days we seemed to get our bag, and return to the ramp late in the afternoon.

We had a young fella on board most days who didnt fish much due to the depth but the smile on his face was priceless. When i was younger, a mate of my old man used to take me out fishing in coral bay and i still hold onto those memories dearly so its cool to pass on some memories to another young guy who will be driving our boat in the years to come no doubt

Swell was barely there most of our trip which was nice as that on top of the rank weather would have kept us ashore a few more days.
We didnt have too much of an issue with sharks which was nice but they did pop up a few times.
My uncle hooked (on consecutive days) a 6-7ft whaler shark in the side fin and dragged it up sideways from 140m...possibly the funniest thing we have seen in a while but the poor fella was sore in the days after.

Interestingly enough we hooked a small green jobfish on the troll one afternoon which i havet seen too many being caught on line.

Nice to see lots of the same crew getting about up there and the trip was topped off nicely with a QLD win in game 3 of the origin.

Was nice to get through this year unscathed as last year i sliced all 3 tendons in my finger and most of the nerves were damaged requiring a quick dash back to the city for micro surgery. Not having to deal with that was great this year...however i did have a few strangers come up to me and hang shit on me for doing it last year which i laughed at.

We stopped through the Galena Bridge camp at Murchison on the way home with what seemed like half of coral bay.

Only 11months until we are back there

White spot

I'm bloody angry, I have just read a half page spread in my local paper about the threat of white spot disease spreading to cru stations in WA and the threat of such an event happening.

The message the article was putting out was that fisheries where requesting all anglers to take care in what they were using for bait, and to give imported raw prawns a big miss so as to reduce the possibility of white spot disease getting into our fisheries with the devastating results that would follow.

Now at fist read this seems like a good thing to put out to the community as fishos are the last line of defence against the introduction of this disease getting into our waters. As they are the last chance this disease will be discovered, i.e. when you shell the imported prawn and put it on the hook or don't shell it such as may be the case.

I have seen a few articles on TV and other media about the devastating effect this disease has had on the prawn farming industry in Qld and it has certainly put a few of these guys on the bones of their bum.
When it was first discovered in imported prawns a ban was put on the importation of these prawns for 6 months, that ban has now been lifted.

I'm absolutely "miffed" that this situation has been allowed to come about, what has happened to the first line of defence against the importation of dangerous food or other stuff into Australia.

We have a specific government body whose job it is is to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen, so just how has this sad situation come to pass. My money is on the following scenario,

Papers covering the importation of these uncooked prawns is forwarded by the importer, some where in the wad of paper work is a document stating the all the required quality checks against these prawns having disease have been complied with and all are ok, "trust me" yeah right.

So all the ticks are in the right boxes everything is ok no need to have a random sample taken for an eyeball examination. Quality disease free prawns are guaranteed.

The head shed of these government agencies are paid a very good dollar to make sure infestations and disease don't get into the country, it appears to me that they seek the very easy road to doing there job by accepting if the ticks are in the right box on the relevant QA form then all is ok, this attitude has allowed White Spot to get into Australia and we are all going to pay for their lack of commitment one way or another.

WA gov has spent a good bit of money trying to get the Swan River prawn back on peoples menu again it would be a bloody tragedy if White Spot gets into the Swan River system and kills this project off before it can get fully established.

I would like to see a ban placed permanently on the importation of all foreign crustations

Full stop

Group buy suggestion

I'm tired of tying dropper loop knots and they slip under high loads so I'm interested in gearing up to make my fishing rigs with crimped connections. I'm keen to save some money and purchase in bulk but the quanities are more than I will ever use in a long time of fishing. I bought a crimper today and somes swivels and crimps in small quatities and the prices are mega expensive buying like this.

Is anybody interested in sharing and saving heaps of bucks on crimps and leader and possibly 3 way swivels?

Here is my suggested purchase and I'd be happy to split into 3 if there are 2 others keen.

1.0mm. 130lbs. 1000m Spool of Jap Leader / Fishing Line.  $65

 Alloy Fishing Crimps 1.2mm x 1000  $25

1.4mm. 260lb. 1000m Spool of Jap Leader / Fishing Line.  $75

Alloy Fishing Crimps 1.5mm x 1000  $38

Total including freight would be $75 each for a 3rd share which would last ages!

PM if interested

Heading North in 2 Weeks

I'm heading North in 2 weeks, no location planned yet. Going for 2 weeks.

Anyone else heading North at the same time?

How's this for dedication?

Local lad Tyson Tate and his son Tom have just won senior Champion male and junior Campion male in both the Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club and the Esperance Landbased fishing club for 2016/2017 season!
Anyone that fishes in an angling club for points knows that's its consistency and skill that racks up the points but to do it in 2 separate clubs is a solid effort and shows how dedicated these 2 are.
Each club has a monthly venue/meet plus annual Classic fishing comp so they would have to fish about 26 weekends at least in a year.

Furuno 587 settings for TM260 Tranny

 Hi

I have a 2 part question .

I have recently wired  a Markfish into my FCV587 and HDS7 Lowrance  GPS and I am not sure on the correct NMEA settings that are required to get the link to work correctly between these 2 units. The instructions on how to wire up was pretty easy but no info on the correct settings required for marking points via Sounder.

The 2nd part of question is what settings are we running for a TM260 transducer on a 587 ? I have checked the menu and found the list of transducers and it only has a 1Kw  rather than the model # or is it a wet box,Tranny mount or thru hull tranny. With many different transducers on market I would of thought that the model would be what you select.

Maybe i am thinking into it to much.

Thanks in Advance

New Member

Gday all,

Thought I would say a quick hello, I live in Dongara and do quite a lot of fishing mostly around here and the Abrolhos.
Hope to add a bit where I can on the site and also will be looking for advice shortly when I will hopefully be looking for a new boat as my current boat is up for sale.

Cheers, Jake,

Best Carpet or nonskid

Still tossing up the best choice for my Voyayger Ghia floor. I was going for Kwick Grip from Whitworths and the grey colour is bit light and lots of sanding. Then thought mabe carpet would be easier and have looked at ribed carpet from

$42 per meter at Bunnings and dont know if it will last and is any good. The other end of the scale is $70 per meter at whitworths. Anybody done the same or has advise much appreciated.

Alvey No More

From the Alvey Reels Australia Facebook Page - posted an hour ago.  A sad day indeed.

To our wonderful customers over many, many years. It is with great sadness I have to announce that Alvey Reels Australia will be closing down.

Our manufacturing facility at Carole Park has served us well since 1978 but sales of our reels are now so low they can not generate the income required to keep the business going.

Our loyal and skilled staff have kept the quality of our products very high and we are proud of this reputation as being the toughest reel on the market.

So I would like to sincerely thank all our staff, many who are very long term employees for their support even now during this very sad time as we wind the business down.

We still have substantial stocks to be distributed to retailers and we will endeavour to support warranties and spare parts for our products as long as we can.

Thank you again for your support as an Alvey user, it is you that has kept us in business for the past 97 years.

Kindest Regards,

Bruce Alvey

New moon fishin Mulloway, Snapper n Gummys

Who's going for a fish this weekend chasin the one that got away last moon

It's official new tech stuff fails the pub test.

Just slightly off fishing, as far as I'm concerned the worst thing to hit WA since the Spanish flue outbreak of 1918/19 is NBN.

I have never suffered a more debilitating upsetting piece of stuff in all my life, the bloody speed is slower than what I had, it is prone to dropping out was a bastard to navigate through to get my Email back and functioning.

I admit that I'm quite illiterate as far as computers go, but even after seeking on line help it took a relative of Einstein to understand what they where trying to relate and I'm really "miffed" with the service.

I don't know how to lookup exactly what speed I'm getting I only go on how long it takes to refresh the screen or lookup things on Google, I now have time to put the kettle on bake some scones and then still have to wait. If this is an example of "new great tech stuff" you can keep it.

**Future Solar WA** Is your Power bill over $300, then look at Solar Power, it's cheaper than you think.

Is your power bill starting to become an issue, then maybe it’s time to think of installing a Solar Power System.

Solar Power Systems have now hit their lowest pricing range ever. However with the rebates changing and the STC’s (Solar credits) reducing in value, prices will start to rise. Rebates on residential properties will fall by 9% per year for the next eleven years until there is not rebate at all. STC’s have already fallen by over 10% this year alone, again adding to the cost.

If you are thinking of a Solar Power System, now is the time to buy.

Pricing for small 1.5KW systems start at just $1499, 2.5KW from $2099 up to a 5KW system for $3699. All of these prices are for fully installed systems.

We do a range of inverters including Fronius, SMA, Goodwe, Sungrow, Zeversolar, ABB and Delta.

If your property has a shading issue then the Solaredge system is available as well.

All of our panels are TEIR ONE panels and include Jinko, Canadian, ET Solar, Infinity and the top of the range LG neon Black 320W Panels.

So if you would like to save money on your power bill, or just get a quote and an idea of your possible saving please give me a call, a private message or an email to the number and email listed below.

Lost fishing licence

Can anyone tell me if Fisheries can book you for not having your licence on you?

Ive lost mine somewhere. I read the 2016/2017 rules, and it says you have to produce it when asked by a fisheries officer, but it doesn't say if it's an offence or not.

Has as anyone been or heard of anyone getting stung?
