scared or playful seal surprised swimmers at North Cottesloe beach ??
Submitted by hezzy on Thu, 2016-11-24 06:55just reading this article , I cant help but wonder if the seal was just trying to stay in the shallows and seek out other company that resembled its own kind in some way for safety in numbers kind of thing
would be interesting to know if any untagged sharks had been sighted in that area around the same time ...?

Augusta next weekend landbased
Submitted by bulkie on Wed, 2016-11-23 13:27Howdy all,
Doing a 2 nighter in Augusta next weekend.
I've done some searching and shortlisted a few areas such as Cosy Corner and Hamelin Bay.
Will not have 4x4 access this trip and my 64 year old man will be coming along.
Mostly fishing off the rocks. Day and night!
Any recommendations would be good. (i.e flatter type rock area)
Cheers

Matching outboard to tinny
Submitted by Daneox on Wed, 2016-11-23 12:39Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how to determine the maximum size outboard that a tinny can handle, if it is too old to have a compliance plate.
Just from experience I have a rough idea of what suits what, e.g. "that's a touch big!" or "that's way too small for that boat."
Is there any hard and fast rule with regards to legality of outboard size on older boats, or is it just a common sense and weight thing?
I guess what I'm asking is how do they determine the max. size that's written on the compliance plate?
Cheers
Dane

Curious sharks
Submitted by Sillo on Tue, 2016-11-22 14:58over the last few years we have been seeing more and more sharks when cray fishing out on the 3 mile from Hillarys.
we have been going out here for the last 15 years now and it's got to the point where we pull the pot then before throwing back in most days we get a visit.
They seem to be attached to the splash of the float when we do throw the pot back in a always check it out.
I like seeing them from the boat but never really saw so many when we where diving. It's about 12-15meters to 17-20m in this area.
We get the feeling they are attracted to our boat as its a single screw desiel and must sound like a cray boat.
Smart fish, or just lazy.

Cray fishing mindarie
Submitted by Curndog on Tue, 2016-11-22 07:53Hey guys,
anyone having any luck with the crays at the moment? I been going out of mindarie (first year potting so bit of a rookie) and haven't had any luck since dropping them in 2 weeks ago. I know the super moon would not have helped and talking to ppl at the ramp it seems I'm not the only one coming in empty handed. I here a lot of different opinions on where to drop this time of year. It seems ppl who have got a few are getting them in close. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Advice sought for bow mount trolling motor on roof top dinghy
Submitted by Comrad on Tue, 2016-11-22 07:15Hi Everyone, I was hoping someone could give me advise on bow mounted trolling motors for a rooftop dinghy.
I'm being relocated by work to Townsville, and I'm using the situation as a catalyst to ramp up my fishing game. I have a pretty good setup on my ute, with a 12 foot punt on top, which has had a dent amount of work done to it lately. I'm thinking of adding a bow mounted trolling motor on it in the near future. As its a roof topper, there'd been to be some form of quick disconnect on the bow, otherwise it'll be to fiddly, and I'll be less likely to set it up before heading off. I have a 105 AH deep cycle battery in the boat to run the sounder at the moment, which I would use to power it. The boat sits quite low to the water - maybe 400 mm from the gunwhale to waterline. Its quite light, I estimate that the total weight of myself, the engine, boat, and peripherals would be around 300kg.
I'm looking for something that would be able to be controlled with a remote, and not just foot controls, and something that would have anchor lock. It would need to be strong enough to deal with northern tides in creeks, and able to move upstream while I flicked lures at mangroves, I wouldn't be using the engine for moving around places, I have a brand new yahama for that, it just needs to hold its own while I'm fishing.
I'm at that point in my life where I'm not really interested in trying to go for the cheapest option, and having something sub-par. I dont want to be justifying that something is "just as good as the other brand" and being worried that things wont work. I'm putting this post out there asking for help from people who've had experience in a similar situation, and can provide feedback on options, if I'm going to put the time, money and effort into it, I want to do it right.
Thanks guys, I look forward to your responses.

Big big bloody huge wave
Submitted by meglodon on Mon, 2016-11-21 19:02Has anyone seen the picture of the biggest wave surfed in the Sunday Times newspaper. Holy hell, 27 metre at a place called Nazare and there is one hell of a brave Aussie surfing down its face. For those who have seen the photo just imagine that you are just coming out of the cut at Mandurah and that thing rears up in front of you. What would you do

Esperance/Cape Arid advice
Submitted by docp1980 on Sun, 2016-11-20 14:10Hi,
Looking at heading down to Esperance/Cape Arid over Xmas and was wondering if anyone has had experience beach launching down there? I can see there are designated launches at Lucky Bay and Duke of New Orleans caravan park, but are there any other suitable places? Hoping to get a camping spot at Lucky Bay, but if it's packed out, then I was thinking maybe Thomas River or even heading out to Poison Creek/Jorndee Creek (if you can get a boat in there). My boat is 14ft high-sided wide-body dory with a 50hp tiller-steer 4-stroke, so weight is maybe around 400kg including the trailer.
Cheers,
Matt

Binningup to Broome
Submitted by Wannafish on Sat, 2016-11-19 17:00Gday guys, here are a few pics of a 3 week family holiday we just arrived home from. I drove up by myself in my 1988 hj61 Landcruiser, and flew the family in to Broome 5 days later. We had 4 nights at Cape Leveque, 5 in Broome, 2 at Eco Beach, 1 at Pt Samson, and finally 3 in Coral Bay. At Leveque every morning was spent at the island (over the spring low tide) with the kids swimming and me hooking trevelley and Long Tom every couple of casts until all my chrome twisty lures were gone...
i am having trouble uploading more photos - but here are a few...

Why is it so, a great professor once said
Submitted by meglodon on Sat, 2016-11-19 11:08When I was a lot younger there used to be a tv show titled "why is it so" or something like that and was presented by a professor Julies Sumner miller (I think that was his name).
On this how he would explain why things where just so, and it was all very entertaining.
In todays west Australian News paper we have another well respected fishing column writer pointedly asking Fisheries "just why is it so" in regards to the amount of yellow fin whiting the pros are ripping out of the Peel Harvey Estuary.
I will be one of the first to sing and dance in praise of Fisheries when they do some very good work in the field protecting OUR fishing stocks. I will also raise my voice when I see or hear Fisheries acting like the three monkeys, hear no evil see no evil and most certainly not speak any evil. With regards to a very important fishery.
There is a requirement for Fisheries to undertake a study of the YFW stocks in the Peel Harvey Estuary when the catch of YFW exceeds a certain limit. The fishing writer in the west is saying that this limit placed on the fishery has been well and truly exceeded (about 3 times over)and there has been no action by Fisheries (at least that the public is aware of) to have a close look at what is going on down here.
There is a place in society for pro fishers and they play an important roll in our society providing fresh fish for those that don't fish.
There is no place for them if they rape and pillage the limited stocks of the YFW that bring a lot of people into Mandurah to sample this very enjoyable pastime.
We are now seeing to very respected fishing column writers and the premier fishing body in the state asking Fisheries.
Why is this so.
That there is no sign of people getting out of the aircon office and taking a long hard look at the YFW bio mass.

Count the crays
Submitted by crano on Sat, 2016-11-19 10:18Had a dive yesterday at a pretty good spot. It would be interesting to know how many crays are there. We took 16 and I think that would be less than 10 percent of what was there. We will now leave that spot alone till next season

How much for custom rocket launchers and soft top?
Submitted by black gen on Sat, 2016-11-19 06:45G'day all
a mate is looking to buy a boat in the 5.5-6.5m range
several we have looked at don't have any form of top for sun and spray protection...has windscreen only
just chasing an opinion on what it's gona cost roughly for either a set of rocket launchers and a hardtop or even just rocket launchers and a soft Bimini? I've had my clears in my boat replaced recently so I'm aware of the cost of that, more chasing the structural type cost.
will help with budgeting when looking at a few of them
thanks for any advice
