Acrylic boat windscreens? Replacing my Tinny screen...
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2012-08-23 13:17Hi guys,
My windscreen on the tinny is aged and has a cracked finish, and I want to replace this - I asked around a few months ago and got a quote for around $800, but I only paid $3000 for the whole boat, so am looking for a cheaper option. I looked at the frame and it seems like quite a simple remove, put new acrylic in and screw it back together? Anyone done this recently and any advice before I go ahead? another thing, it looks like what I would call perspex, but the dude at the plastics shop recommended 4,5mm acrylic - is this better or just cheaper? Does it stand up to the weather and sun? There is a slight curve in the screen too, but across the boat, not like a car winscreen, just a straight curve of the shape of the front of the tinny - will that be a problem? The total cost with new rubbers DIY is $120 plus GST.... So quite a savings...if it is a simple job?

islands trip
Submitted by scotto on Thu, 2012-08-23 09:51just thought i would throw up a few pics from an islands trip we did a few of weeks ago with a couple of mates.
probably the best trip fish wise, we've had for a good couple of years, and was a good mix of spearing and fishing. plenty of donkey pinkies, baldies, thumping coral trout, big rankins and estuary cod, and some monster mackies, that didnt always make it to the boat. i accidentily left my camera on the beach on the second day, which was (murphys law) the best day we had.
even though most of the fishing was done in only 20-30m, and diving in 10-15m, sharks were a still a major problem, and we lost many on line and spear. one pinky actually lept clear of the water, and hit the gunnels of the boat as it got chased by no less than 4 sharks in only 20m. I also lost an entire string of fish to an overly excited 3.5m bronzy, that harrassed us all the way on our 300m swim up current back to the boat... not for the faint hearted....
enjoy

Fishing Kayak info
Submitted by jimjamjohnny on Wed, 2012-08-22 21:04Hey guys, im looking at buying a fishing Kayak in the near future, but i have no idea what brands to go for, price or what i should be looking for in a fishing yak as far as equipment ect...
I like the idea of a two man yak so im not limited to just going by myself, but im not sure how hard it is to use a two man yak by yourself??
I dont really want to go for a brand spanka and as price range, $500 is the most i would feel comfortable spending, but my arm may be twisted?
Right now im just after some info, so if you could throw me some it would be awesome!
Cheers guys!

Who remembers paper sounders
Submitted by craigb on Wed, 2012-08-22 19:59Ah yeah the joys. Ours was a big as microwave, and after a good haul in a bad sea, get to the grounsds and have to manually start the styllus after realising it was stuck. Best ever was launching and after everything getting to the "spot" seeing the pink line on the paper and remembering forgetting to get a new roll. Used to use it sparingly to save paper as it was dear, and you couldn't be guarenteed of availability. One positive feature which I wish the newer sounders offered in some form was that after a good catch, we could go back on the days soundings and establish how the different species recorded and learn what to look for next round.. Ah then theres decca, but thats another post..

Submitted by Ry-Z Gone Fishin' on Wed, 2012-08-22 09:35Hey Guys,

Just wondering along the beaches from like scarborough to mindarie where a good quiet jetty is n the ocean to take the little tackers down to so thy can drop a line. I took them to the hilaries boat harbour rocks on the north side on sunday, (where I got a great feed of tailor) with small sinkers they kept getting snagged every 2 seconds, and with small berley floats they both got there reels tangled! It was at this time I thought we better call it a night haha.Even better if its a good jetty to through a mullie to :P

DIY Squid Light completed
Submitted by Ericl on Wed, 2012-08-22 08:44Hi again
After reading all suggestions, I went ahead and completed my light
I also used a standard cylinder (plastic jar with plastic lid) Getting flotation from a wheelbarrow inner tube fixed to some scrap plastic (ex Wheelie Bin)
I then used the standard adhesive backing of the stip light but covered this with a clear plastic heat shrink sleeve as a precaution against the adhesive letting go
Then sealed joints with copious amounts of glue lined heat shrink
Lastly tested in my pool
Here are my pics
Cheers

Petiton to STOP new fishing laws
Submitted by fishfinger on Tue, 2012-08-21 20:05G'day to all
I would just like to bring to everyone's attention a petition that is going to hopefully be at most tackles shops about the fishing management paper 252, in particular to the
* Proposed Changes in State-wide Possession Limit Reductions and the Splitting of the Possession Limit.
* Reducing the Recreational Bag Limits.
We are trying to keep them as they currently are. If you see one in the store please sign it as we need hard copy signatures for a petition and it will effect everyone.
If you would like to help and your local tackle shop does not have one put a post on here with a contact and I will arrange something. This is being driven through the C.P.B.C. sports fishing group.
The changes that they are proposing have no data to back the reason for changes up. Now we are asking the Legislative Assembly
* To vote down/amend the proposed changes and guidelines proposed by the fisheries minister Hon Norman Moore MLC, in line with the above points of contention.
We all need to voice our opinion or the very very loud lobby groups who want all fishing band will change the rules under our noses.
Thank you

Electric Reel Help ...
Submitted by Knot Big Enuff on Tue, 2012-08-21 14:35Hey All,
Got myself one of these Super Tanacom S 500 for the shallower deep drops (200-300m) .... YouTube
Tried it last weekend, and the digi line counter won't go beyond 250.00m ... not sure if that's the reel capability or is there an option I've got to change. Everything being in Japanese, and no manual, I've got limited understanding of the setup, yet!
Seen some of the Daiwas that you've got to do a certain setup before you spool it up, i.e. identify the line class (PE), and it has a set equivalent length! Not sure if that's applicable on these older model or not!
Any ideas?

Ipad marine & nav map/charts
Submitted by timboon on Tue, 2012-08-21 14:19FW crew...
Am looking at buying a tablet style whizbang thing to use for a few reasons but the one thing that I have heard that i like the sound of is being able to use them off the satelites as opposed to phone towers providing navigation pretty well anywhere anytime...
I`m yet to have this confirmed but i figured guys here would have done some research?
It seems you can download anything nowadays so if it is the case you can use them as a gps off the Satelites then I guess you can d/load the maps & charts.... Whats your thoughts guys anyone onto it?

Fishing Bully
Submitted by Uluabuster on Tue, 2012-08-21 14:15Was gutting and scaling my catch with my gf next to a jetty behind The Boat Shed restaurant (at the end of Coode St, along Canning Highway) when two boats pulled up in front of me.
Think one of the blokes from boat 1 need to relieve himself or get something from the car park and went towards the direction of the carpark. One of the boats (boat 2) beached right in front of me, causing massive wake and nearly got me soaked. Boat 1 just went on doing circles and revving the engine. In fact I think he must have seen me and my gf moving behind the waterline to keep ourselves dry and thought it was funny so he kept on doing it!
As I was with my gf, I was concerned about her safety and hence all I did was said nothing and continued to scale the catch I had. I heard them utter something about me getting my catch from a charter or something. Shortly after that, the bloke returned from the dark parking area and jumped onto Boat 1. Boat 2 purposely moved his boat closer to me with the engine facing right at me, tilted the engine and commencing reving the engine so that the propeller was churning and splashing water right at me!
At that stage, I just stood back again and looked straight at the Boat 2. I was very tempted to jump onboard and stab the bastard but for my gf's sake, I kept quiet and went back to what I was doing.
Then the bastard from Boat 2 chucked a filletted fish carcass at me before both of the boats took off.
Some f@ckwits have no respect for others and all this time I kept quiet because I didn't want any trouble with my gf around. It was dark and apart from a person taking photos near the carpark, there wasn't anyone else around. There were many people in the restaurant but I am sure they couldn't hear a thing or aware of what's going on.
I stood little or no chance fighting off 4 young blokes but I was pretty sure the 6 inch and 9 inch fillet knives I had with me would do some damage.
I should have snapped a photo of the 2 boats and put 'em up in FW to name and shame these f@ckers. Unfortunately, I was too upset to think rationally at that time.
If you are reading this you pieces of shit you should be ashamed of yourself. That's a clear act of bullying and you were picking on us because we were outnumbered and the place was secluded. I recognise your f@ckface and please don't let me run into you again. I can assure you it wouldn't be pleasant.
There's no place in our society for such low and despicable act.

Expressions of interest wanted - Abrolhos jigging and casting trip April 2013
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2012-08-21 14:11Hi guys
I'm looking at booking out Blue Lightning for a 5 day trip to the Abrolhos in April.
Their web site is here http://www.bluelightning.com.au/
They are a good crew and its a good boat (I've been with them to the Abrolhos and Montes over the last couple of years).
I've got some mates and regular deckies of mine who are likely to come, but should have some spots available for a couple more people. All the guys that I'd be bringing would be into jigging, soft plastics, surface casting for pelagics etc and looking for people into that sort of stuff (not bait fishing) to join. No offence to bait fishos just a lot easier if everyone on the boat is doing the same thing! Targets will be all the usual suspects, baldies, coral trout, pinkies, dhufish, mackerel and yellowfin etc.
Dates I am locking in are below:
Arrive (late afternoon): Saturday 27th April 2013
Day 1: Sunday 28th April 2013
Day 5: Thursday 2nd May 2013
Cost is $1995 for the 5 days including all food etc, you BYO alcohol. Tackle is supplied by the company if you need it.
Please PM if keen. Serious people only please as we need to take deposits soon.
Cheers
Dan

Dropping Big Fish
Submitted by Walfootrot on Tue, 2012-08-21 09:26OK, Just thought I would start a thread on dropping fish. Think we have all lost fish at one time or another, due to doing something wrong ( Known as the Dumb Ass Factor
)
Over the weekend we managed to drop 2 thumpers, one was on a spot known for dig Dhu's ( 20+kg ).
Saturday - I got snagged up about 20 min earlier, and had tightened the drag to full to try and free the rig.... snapped the braid ( 80lb ). re rigged and started fishing again..... time passes and get the Dhu bite, set the hooks and it runs... but pulls the hooks as the drag was still on full lock and it could not take line. I hate that feeling you have once you loose a fish that should be on the boat. It stays with you all day as the others on the boat will keep reminding you of it for the next week!
NOTE- Check you drag settings after a snag
Sunday - We get a couple of good size KG's ( 58cm ) while fishing for Dhu's, and skipper drops a whiting rod over the side, and put the Dhu rod in the holder while holding the whiting rod, misses the first bites on the dhu rod, as he puts the whiting rod in the holder, and picks up the dhu rod, sets the hooks but ends up pulling them after a bit of a fight... Not the first time this has happened.
NOTE- If fishing 2 rods, 1 for smaller fish and one for Dhu's, place the smaller rod in the holder and focus on the dhu rod.
No one likes to lose a fish, but it does happen. Its when you have done everything right and still drop a fish... THATS FISHING
No one likes to lose a fish, but it does happen. Its when you stuffed up and drop a fish, its a... DUMB ASS FACTOR
If you have lost a good fish due to DAF why not fess up, it would be good for the people just starting. Some tips on what not to do.
Tight Lines but not too tight!

Reel help
Submitted by Trevor68 on Mon, 2012-08-20 21:19Hi all
Ive bought penn 30 Vsw second hand but it didn't have any rod clamps. I was wondering if it's ok to run 50lbs line on this reel without any clamps. It is mounted on a t-curve tiagra 24 kg rod will any damage occur to the rod or the reel. I've got a rod clamp on order but it seems that they are more rare than a winning lotto ticket and I estimate I won't have a rod clamp with in 6 months so does anyone know where I can get one quicker.
Thanks
Trevor

Calling all Docker knockers!
Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2012-08-20 19:57I want to see who is willing to commit to this now...
If the Dockers beat North Melbourne at Etihad on Sunday, who out there in "docker knocker land" will acknowledge some respect for the Dockers and say this year we are the real deal, a competitive team and a chance of getting past week one of the finals. North are one of the form sides right at this minute, and any team who can beat them can consider themselves a very capable unit.
For my end, if we lose, I'll say we're not good enough and shouldn't play finals this year and we should start planning for next year. If we can't beat a top eight team in Melbourne then we won't get far into September.
It's elimination final time for us from here on in!

Live bait rig suggestions
Submitted by PattyT on Mon, 2012-08-20 18:17Hey guys, im off to hervey bay in october for a weeks fishing. Ill be spending atleast 4 days on the jetty there live baiting and spinning for trevs, mackies, tuna, queenies, and whatever else.
Last time I was there was really my first experience with live baiting (easy to jig up the bait from around the jetty). Anyway, we were just putting the hook through the back of the bait and chucking it out. This had a few negatives, the bait didnt last long, and the mackies kept biting off the tails and missing the hook.
So getting to my point, what live bait rig to you guys suggest. I'm thinking i might try a bridle rig, with a stinger hook connected by 80lb BM tough trace.
Look forward to hearing some suggestions

Fishing Sydney Landbased
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Mon, 2012-08-20 05:29Hello All,
Im in Sydney for the next two weeks attending a wedding and am staying north of Sydney in Dee Why. I have my rods and some gear here and am wondering if there are any places people can recommend for landbased fishing. I went past Mosman and the Spit yesterday which looked pretty promising. I dont mind fishing the harbour, or the ocean if there are some nice groynes or jetties. I may even look into a road trip to have a crack for some freshwater fishing also.
What kind of species are out there, and what rigs, baits or lures are worth a crack?
Going to get my licence today and have a read through, thank in advance for any advice !
