Gnaraloo weather

G'day guys

I'm headin to Gnaraloo station this sunday and so far the weather looks pretty blowy ( about 20-25 knots at times). just wondering if everyone thinks we should still cart the boat up there and fish around the bay, away from the sanctuary zones of course. also has anyone fish around the bay at night time or is it to dangerous? I think it will be a great trip either way as last year we caught a fair variety of fish land based but would love to see what the place has to offer out of casting distance. let me know what ya's think.

cheers

Any spots for bottom fish out from Hillarys?

Hi all

I have just bought a boat capable of getting out onto Direction Bank (on a good day), but I haven't fished there very much at all (the old 4.2 m tinnie was just a tad too small!).  Does anyone have any tips on spots where I might find some bottom dwellers, dhuies, cod, snapper  etc etc, or even whiting closer in?.  Very happy to receive GPS spots via private email if you don't want to publish them, or just general directions, distances and water depths and I'll try to find them myself.  I am in Aveley, so the closest boat ramps are probably Hillarys or Ocean Reef.

Cheers

anyone free on saturday?

Chirp transducers available

I see Airmar have now released the '

Airmar CHIRP Transducer M265LH,

1KW in Hull, like the M260, now compatible with :-  CHIRP transducers can also be used with Furuno sounders and fishfinders that have selectable frequencies, including the FCV-295, BBFF3 and DFF3 models.  Question is, at almost half the price of a R199 2Kw, are they going to be twice a good ?

-Hello fellow fisherman

I was wondering if anyone new what the laws are for fishing overnight on the beach?

If i take me swag and sleep in it for a couple of hours is this classed as camping.

If i fish all night and dont sleep is this classed as camping?

Pretty much what is camping and what isnt if any one knows the answer to this it would much apreciated.

I like to head down to white hills a couple of times a year and other such places and herd of

stories of people being busted by the rangers.

               Cheers Rusty

What do you do if you see/hear of something illegal fishing wise

After the Bloke trying to sell his squid I thought what do we do. Someone posted saying should we notify him?

The question I thought was simple -- Yes. But then are we helping him escape the law, and he might have sold some.

I have to admit that I (and the Mrs who was a VFLO -- Yellow shirt) were never short of telling someone at the Cut that what they were doing, keeping was illegal. More often to be greeted by some string of X Rated banter about "minding your own business". The fairly loud conversation to Darren Schofield (X fisheries mandurah, now Rocho based I think)on the Mobile sson had most scurrying to leave or throw u/size tailor back, again with a string of XXXX. But once a big Italian ladd wanted to take it further, and try and beat the living crap out of me. I played state Rugby years ago, but I am no "brick dunny" and if it wasnt for other fishos around to the rescue I probably would have been pulverised.

I still would and do the same. Up here I see a lot less rape and pillage than previous.

The question is what should we do, and what do we do?

Perhaps as a responsible fishing community we can lead in some way to educate etc.

Just interested.

Dhu Spot in mandurah

pan sized mako.....

had not a bad day out yesterday....

me and a mate braved the early north slop with a mate, and hit the 40's, and ended up releasing 10 dhus, all around the 5 - 6kg mark, keeping 2 for a feed.

around 10:30 this little bugger came and made an appearance around the sea anchor, and lucky for me (but unlucky for him...), i had a gang on a trace in the rig bag, ready to rumble, and had a whole herring floating down to his feeding level in less than 30 seconds.

by all accounts, the fight was pretty embarrasing for the mako, and he was subdued on 15kg in about 4 mins, without so much as a decent run, let alone the ariel acrobatics makos are renowned for. the only time he showed a bit of how-ya-goin, was when we decided that he was coming home with us, and dispatched him with the bat. he measured around 1.4m long, and approx 50-60kgs.

we removed the fins and head, and trunked him into the esky. the noticeable thing was the lack of stench of ammonia in the shark (literally no smell at all), and i can now see why they are regarded as such high-quality table fare. we had some last night for dinner in egg and breadcrumbs, and it was absolutely superb. i reckon you would be hard-pushed to tell the difference between that, and most other pelagics like macky, swordfish, etc, and i wont be hesitating to get another one onboard when/if the opportunity arises!!

scotto

ps, sorry about the blood. if i had've known it was that bloody, i would have given him a wash.

Southwest Marine Parks

Just heard on ABC regional news that Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke has received 35.000 submissions on the proposed Marine Parks across Southern Aus. Interesting to see how many from people with environmental backgrounds and those from fishers.

$25 million boat harbour for Augusta

$25million boat harbour to be built in Augusta

The State Government has unveiled plans for a new $25million boat harbour at Augusta, with construction due to start later this year.

Premier Colin Barnett said the harbour, to be built at Flat Rock in Flinders Bay, would provide much-needed, safe direct ocean access for recreational and commercial craft between Busselton and Albany.

“The harbour will service the region's commercial and tourism fleets while providing a regional and State destination point for the ever increasing recreational boating sector,” Mr Barnett said.

"There is an urgent need for a sheltered harbour at Augusta as navigation of the shallow ocean entrance to the commercial boating facility in the Blackwood River is increasingly difficult and prevailing winds and strong ocean currents make launching from the coast unsafe.”

The project, funded through the Royalties for Regions program, includes the construction of two breakwaters to create a protected harbour basin featuring four boat launching ramps, boat holding jetties, a fixed 40-metre service jetty and associated facilities including at least 160  car/trailer parking bays and 90 car-only parking bays.

Further stages of development may include the provision of up to 50 boat pens and commercial development opportunities.

The Premier said the project would provide flow-on benefits to local community.

“This is great news for local business operators and the general Augusta community, Mr Barnett said.

“The new harbour is of particular importance to the existing whale watching and fishing industries, which are currently limited by lack of access to safe landing jetties.

"The project delivers on the State Government's commitment to provide improved boating infrastructure throughout Western Australia.”

In the 2011-12 State Budget, $68million was allocated to enhance recreational boating facilities across regional WA.

“I’d also like to commend the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River for its work in ensuring the success of this project,” the Premier said.
