Submitted by wez0062 on Thu, 2018-02-08 15:55hey guys, this has probably been asked & answered before, but can anyone recomend somewhere for me to store my 22ft boat for 5 or 6 months ( fremantle area ) but still be able to grab it whenever. Have 2 children moving back home soon for 3 or 4 months & the boat takes up too much parking space

Submitted by CD on Thu, 2018-02-08 11:03The Shire of Exmouth is currently completing an investigation of the Tantabiddi Boat Launching Facility. The investigation includes a Recreational Boat User Survey to better understand:
- the current use of the Facility;
- and issues with the Facility; and
- potential improvements to the Facility.
It would be appreciated if anyone that has used this Facility could take a few minutes to complete the online user survey. Your feedback will help guide the future of the Facility!

Mulloway
Submitted by chris1108 on Wed, 2018-02-07 15:28What are others opinions based on experience of fishing for mulloway at night when the full tide is mid-afternoon like today?
I try to fish around the tide change, but I'm keen to go for a sesh tonight at E Shed and always figure that if the fish are hungry, they'll be there at some stage.
I spend about 6 hours at E Shed last night using livies for bait. Plenty of good baitfish around.

Pflueger Salt80
Submitted by Curndog on Wed, 2018-02-07 11:27Hey fellas,
just purchased a Pflueger Salt 80sw as a cheapy for chasing some bigger fish for a couple of trips north this year. Haven’t paired with a rod yet but just wondering if anyone has one and what size braid would you recommend? Was thinking 50lb or could go slightly heavier? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

Tide Directions
Submitted by snuffs on Tue, 2018-02-06 14:51Been doing some night anchoring and burleying around the 3 mile of late ... usually tide and wind direction have been reasonably correlated making for productive results.
BUT on Saturday evening we were met with a SW wind and an opposing Northerly tide ... which made it a little more challenging as the burley trail was going upwind of the boat. Still managed some good fish, but was very awkward and less productive than normal.
My understanding is there are too many variables to forecast tide direction in advance (beyond just knowing whether its an ingoing or outgoing tide). Does anyone have a secret formula to deal with this? :)
Anyhow, interested to hear thoughts.
Cheers

Ditching the tackle box
Submitted by Paj man on Tue, 2018-02-06 09:25The past few years has seen me pick up a few new methods of fishing (jigging, sp's, etc.) and I've found the old tackle box just isn't coping with the amount of gear I have now. So I was thinking about going back to the drawing board and starting with a new setup. I already have a jig wallet, large sp's bag, a small sp's bag, roll for stickbaits and a roll for minnows which just hang around my tackle box and there has been a couple of times where I've forgotten something. My thoughts at the moment is to have a small-mid sized storage container to combine what I already have and getting half a dozen tacke trays to hold;
- bream/small lures
- assists/split rings/solid rings - jigging related
- jig heads (inshore and offhsore - the smaller jig heads can stay in the small sp's bag)
- small terminal tackle
- large terminal tackle
- wire leader gear (crimps, large swivels etc)
- casting metals and jigs
- sinkers (maybe split into big & small or just keep the small sinkers with the small terminal tackle)
This way everything stays in the one box at home (or in the car when I go away) and I can open it up to pick and choose what I need for whatever fishing i'm doing (up river, in the boat, on the beach, etc.). I'll keep all my pliers/knives/leader in the box too and have something like a small tackle bag or backpack to transfer what gear I'm taking for that trip into. I figure this will keep all my tackle together so nothing is ever missed before a fish but will also split my gear up into specific containers so I'm only taking what I need for each fishing trip.
What are other people doing to organise their fishing gear? Appreciated any comments/thoughts on the above concept
Cheers

New Boat - Lots of Questions! (Charts / Where to go / Sounders)
Submitted by kinetic_skink on Mon, 2018-02-05 16:29Hi All!
First time boat owner here. I just picked up a Commodore 670 Allrounder, with a 225 Honda on the back. My old man has always owned a boat so I am familiar on boats and have plenty of experience fishing, but no so much around Perth. Most of my fishing has been Steep Point, Cervantes, Horracks and Quobba
Having a boat myself now, I am thinking about a lot more things beyond just jumping on my dads boat (4.6m Quintrex) when the opportunity avails itself.
Charts
I have found charting software OpenCPN among others, but having a rough time find the actual charts to load in to it. Not really sure what to do here. Any advice appreciated.
Sounder
The boat has a Navman 8084. Seems OK, but I love tech toys, so looking at something a bit fancier. Raymarine Axiom 9 seems nice. Thoughts?
Other cool boat tech?
Sightseeing
My wife and I love just looking at wildlife. Any recommendations setting off from Perth to go look at marine life?
Boat
I would like to explore islands with my boat. I am comfortable about getting to Rottnest on it. I have never been to the Abrolhos Islands. Would this boat be suitable?
One downside of this boat is that is only has 180L fuel tank. Is it possible to add long range fuel tanks?
Thanks!

Coral Bay - Solo Traveler
Submitted by Helen on Mon, 2018-02-05 15:11Hey Peeps.
My boss wants me to take leave asap and I cant really afford to go anywhere expensive so i was thinking of doing a week camping in Coral Bay travelling the weekends either side of the week i take off. I know May/June is a better time to go to Coral Bay, but is it that terrible if I cant push my leave out and go in say a month? Id probably drive which wont be fun doing it alone and ill only have the basics camping wise. I would ideally like to get in on a fishing charter while there, but it would have to be at the very end of my stay as i wont have an engel and will need to bring anything i catch back on ice. Advice on if this is even a good idea would be great... or open to suggestions on another place to go that's not going to kill my bank account. Thanks everyone :)

Cockburn sound
Submitted by Waddy87 on Sun, 2018-02-04 18:00Finally got my boat out on the water after 2 years of dramas. Fished around the sound not far from woodsman point ramp. Caught stuff all mainly butterfish and nothing of size. Only one little squid. Been fishing with squid for bait, anyone got any tips? I have heard that d9 wreck is the spot but wouldn’t have a clue where it is

Sea Anchor Y Bridle
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2018-02-04 13:08I had a search but couldn't find the old thread but I remember a couple of guys converting their sea anchor rope to a Y bridle with one rope tied to the bow and the port side to get the rope out of the way.
Can anyone who's rigged one up let me know where about they attached the second rope to. I'm assuming I loop the existing rope a few metres down and attach the second rope to that?
Cheers

Prolific Spanish mackerel?
Submitted by aussiejoe on Sun, 2018-02-04 12:17The Bluewater metro report this week suggested that "Spanish mackerel are prolific..."
We spent nearly three hours or so trolling the West End yesterday. Conditions were good with the water temp around 22.5 degrees, clean blue water and little to no weed so hopes were high. Baitfish on the sounder were sitting lower in the water column so we used deep divers of various colours, Halco and X-Raps but had no luck.
I realise that a three hour trawl is not putting in much time but here have been no recent reports from members on here of Spaniards so how prolific are they at the moment?

Sharked dhu off Mindarie
Submitted by Ryan C on Sun, 2018-02-04 09:32After taking my boys to sport yesterday I snuck out for an arvo run off Mindarie, by the time I launched at 2pm the weather had turned to shit! I pressed on to a spot in 37m that’s been good to me lately and first drops hooked up to a sizeable dhu which I pulled the hooks on halfway to the boat ( #%##!) got a nice blackbum next drop which went into the icebox then it was quiet for a bit so I moved to the edge of the coral lump and hooked a steam train , 5 minutes or so into the fight with what I called for a 15kg dhu it just started to float up when i lost 100m of line in a second and things went slack , wound in to find my top swivel and 30cm of shredded 130lb rig left . Must of been a bloody big shark ! First time I’ve been sharked on a dhu ever. Any way I headed for home in the building Westerly and had 2 drops on new little bits of ground I found on the way in for a nice 65cm dhu to round out my solo bag. Very frustrating arvo on Dhu’s.

How did you go yesterday
Submitted by Gav475 on Sat, 2018-02-03 10:58Headed out from two rocks to the bank. Was hard work early and had to fish alot of marks with not much happening. Shifted again a bit further north and the sounder lit up. Multiple dhuies pinkies baldies rat sambos and the biggest black bum I have seen. Took our bag of 2 dhuies 1 pinkie and 1 baldie and left them bitting. Great day out and back in at 28 knots on flat seas with a lovely bag. Nice slab of fresh dhuie for dinner last night. So how did everyone else go as the ramp was busy as.

Winds
Submitted by dakka on Sat, 2018-02-03 10:23Howdy All
I have a general question about wind direction, because as with most I work weekdays and have weekends off, with the wind and swell not agreeing most of the time we are off. I know the 15 rule but my question is what direction of wind should I be looking for to head out from Rockingham for a fish and what winds are a no no to head out in, I have a 5.25m western craft cheers

Unreel
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2018-02-02 21:08Had a horrendous episode of pinging today. Drifted a spot in the 40s off Hillarys today and after the 3rd drift a nice black hulled Haines Hunter called 'Unreel' proceeds to pull up and start drifting at the start of my line.
Bit miffed but I pull back around and we manage to 'share' the drift without getting in each other's way. After another drift I look up to see him anchoring over the ground completely cutting out my drift.
We drove right up over their lines within 10m of their boat with some death metal cranking full volume and proceeded to reef in a nice estuary cod right in front of them to what can only be referred to as a celebration for the ages. Suck it Unreel. I hope they enjoyed their HJs for dinner coz they caught faaaaark all.
