Best mulloway bait?

What is the best bait for river mulloway is squid any good as there is a few around?

See temperature charts

Who uses which temperature chart? After a season of no success with trolling I am looking into investing in a surface temperature map. And I am wondering what everyone is using and what your experience is with the charts. I also just got a 5m boat and only can get out to about 50m deep and I am not sure if its worth it either. If anyone got some input would be much appreciated

Thanks Seb

The run of the whites

kalbarri landbased fishing report

So been managing to get out a little bit and do some landbased fishing. There has been some good tailor starting to move in down the cliffs from pot alley to eagle gorge. When swell permits you can get down to the ledges and get into them. Wittacarra has been good for tailor as well just before sunrise and on dusk. Been some good bronzies being hooked as well in the early mornings if your into that type of fishing! The river has been going off with really good numbers of bream being caught from the refuel jetty all the way up river. Some decent size Javlin fish being caught up river as well. Mullaway are starting to make a bit more of an appearance off the beaches from chinamans and up the coast. Tailor off frustrations are in pesky numbers on dusk through to night. Crabs have been pretty quiet but hopefully will fire up as this moon comes on to full shortly. With the dredge in town now pumping the fish are starting to get fiesty. There are still really good numbers of yellowfin whiting in the river as well up to and over 30cm. Been an amazing year for whiting on the flats here in ankle deep water but they can be found in numbers up river past castle rock on the flats as well. Hope this helps.

Greg Pickering's shark attack story

Two-time shark victim s horror story

Two-time shark victim Greg Pickering.

The abalone diver who incredibly survived a second shark attack has revealed he did not see the great white that tried to bite his head off - but instead recognised the sound of teeth on bone.

Greg Pickering, 55, was diving for abalone off a remote part of WA’s southern coast last month when he was attacked by a suspected great white shark.

It was the second time Mr Pickering had lived through a shark attack, after being bitten by a 1.5 metre bronze whaler while in waters near Cervantes, north of Perth, in 2004 as he was trying to help a friend.

Speaking about his ordeal for the first time, Mr Pickering told the Seven Network’s Sunday Night program about the circumstances of the attack, which left him needing 10 hours of surgery on facial and other wounds.

“I heard the sound, the thrashing sound, of teeth on bone - and I remembered the sound from the last time I was bitten,” Mr Pickering said.

“I thought ‘that is probably a shark’, but I didn’t see it - I heard the attack.”

The show says Mr Pickering is now the only man in the world to be attacked by sharks in separate incidents and live to tell the tale.

And the interview will also detail how Mr Pickering used his 40-year diving experience to hold his breath and rise to the surface slowly after the attack, despite the water turning red around him from the blood pouring from his horrific injuries.

A roll of duct tape and a towel were used to hold Mr Pickering’s shredded face together, as his eight-hour journey to hospital started.

Mr Pickering told reporter Mark Ferguson that he felt he had been spared his life.

“It (the shark) suddenly stopped and let me go, so I have definitely been given another chance,” Mr Pickering said.

“I do believe I have been given a second chance.

"God has given me a second chance, there is no doubt about that.”

Soon after the attack, Mr Pickering’s family expressed their thanks to paramedics, surgeons, doctors and nurses who helped save his life, while Fisheries Department director-general Stuart Smith slapped a kill order on the shark.

But the order was then called off because the shark was not spotted again and was no longer considered a threat to school-holiday campers in the area.

Mr Pickering returned to the area where he was attacked, Poison Creek at Cape Arid National Park, about 180km east of Esperance, to tell his story.

The interview with Mr Pickering will air on the Seven Network’s Sunday Night at 7.30pm on Sunday.

Shimano Australia Service

Thought i'd share a good news story regarding Shimano service. My 14yo nephew has shown interest / obsession with fishing so i took him to a tackle shop in September and we bought him a Daiwa black gen Wicked Weasel and Stradic 2500, nice first combo! Anyway he managed to accidentally get beach sand in the reel that same week ( felt like a grinder ) so we sent it off to Shimano Oz stating what had happened and a copy of the receipt expecting a service cost of up to at least a hundred bucks minimum. To our surprise the reel was returned in 9 days and we were charged $20 service fee and postage was $14! Bloody amazed at such a low charge and quick return. Hats off to Shimano Oz for great customer service. Anyone else out there had a good experience regarding service / warranty?

Hillary's All-Nighter

Hey all,

Myself and fellow fishwrecked member Liam (leemo) made a last minute call to head to Hillary's for an all nighter! Weather was looking mint perfect with a fairly strong southerly, perfect for the platform! After a few cans of cat food, lamb hearts, and livers we had a big oil slick stretching out a hundred odd meters.

Things were looking promising for the night, however it did start out a but slow but 9pm exactly on the dot and Liam was on! Shortly after it was called for a ray and busted off after 10mins. Not a bad start eh!

losing track of time, and rebating every hour we finally settled down and setup the night stay a chair for myself and a swag for the ginger... I halted conversation as I had sworn to see movement in Liam's rod and bang the rod start doubling over the rail, as soon as pressure was applied snap! The whole rig and leader was busted off an easy 2m of thick 100lb mono gone! Sitting back down clued as to what could have done this we assumed a shark and exactly a minute later as I was about to crack open a bundy my rods starts going off and before I knew it exact same thing happened; snap! We called it for the same shark easily over the 2-2.5m mark!

Rigging up and casting out and again further waiting runs we sat back relaxed chatting away when I swore again I saw movement on Liam's rod and in less than a second the reel was nearly over the side of the railing haha. After around 10 mins I get down to the rocks to gaff what was easily a 1.5m shovelly when it spurted its last energy and rolled a few times; ping!

after that we hit the sacks with no more runs until the next morning, at around 6:30 a heard the click of my toriums ratchet and I was up like a shot, rod in hand I slowly felt the line tension and strike I was into a ray that did not stop running until ping!

Anyways that was all from us, but plenty more to come soon!

Ps- Both Liam & I witnessed the rare elusive sighitng of the local Mekong Catfish! unfortunately the flash reflected off the water and distorted the image!

Cheers, Eric!

New Boat

Bought a Signature 602F with a 175HP Suzuki a couple of weeks ago. Intend on having a good summer taking the kids out in the river, Cockburn Sound, catch a few Herring, whiting, KGs plus have a crack at a few Dhuies, Snapper, Spanish Macks etc with mates.

I have got to say a BIG thanks to Isaac & Maz from All Boats & Caravans. They were/are great to deal with and have looked after me. I would highly recommend them.

Also thanks to Mark Brown from Chivers who shared his wealth of boating knowledge & experience & steered me in the right direction. He never once minded taking my call or answering my email even though he probably wasn't going to sell me a boat.

Dexter's Boat

Not too sure if any of you are into Dexter but happened to stumble across the eBay listing for the actual boat they use in the show. Very nice rig and bidding was only at  $40,990 US when the auction finished. Not a bad little pick up for a fan of the show.

Night Boat Fishing at Blackwall

 Hi guys

i only have a 12 ft dinghy and was thinking about going fishing tomorrow night (end of uni exams). I was thinking of doing a night fish at Blackwall reach but am a bit concerned about the winds which are about 20 knots easterly to east south east. Can anyone please tell me whether it would be too rough with that type of wind in a tinny.

thanks

soft placky mulloway rod?

G'day guys,

I'm looking for a rod to chase mulloway in the river using SP's, mostly used on a boat but a little land based also. About 7ft long would be ideal and will be using between 12-20lb braid. I'm not sure on what weight to go with. 3-6kg, 5-8kg, 5-10kg or 6-10kg? need to be able to turn the head if one decides to run for structure. budget will be $200 max for now.

Good combo for pilbara

Hey guys, im doing a 3month stint on the mines up north at Port Hedland so i've decided that ill try do some landbased fishing on my weekends etc.

I havent done much landbased fishing due to uni constraints, so i still gotta research spots etc but hope to get some barra.

Ive decided to get a spin combo and at the moment ive brought a sustain 4000fg and need a rod to match. I plan to spool it with 20lb braid and so far

ive narrowed the search down to the following rods; but im open to suggestions:

TCurve T Series - Power Spin 672

TCurve Revolution Inshore - Barra Spin 662

I will also be using the rod as an all around spin combo for most of my landbased fishing around Perth for tailor etc.

would a shorter rod be a bit better maybe a 6ft so i can use it on a boat as well??

Any help is appreciated, cheers.

when I used to do the nav aids in Hampton harbor some times the Mercury would be out of action (which was an awesome boat it self), and had to go out on Dell Wards "service boat " that had 3 250 hp yammy out boards on it it went any where very fast
