DIY Cray pots
Submitted by buddharock on Wed, 2013-11-06 20:16Hey guys,
Just chatting to Dad about making my own pots as he used to own a cray pot factory back in the 80's. He is recently retired and asked him if he wanted something to do he could make me a couple of pots. He said that they used to sell pre-cut materials to the pros who would make their own replacements during the off season. Anyone know if this is still possible or am I better off looking out for some on the Gumtree or f/s here. Looking at jarrah frame, pine slats, 1/2 to 3/4 size as pulling by hand. Already have a couple of plastic ones that I have fitted bait baskets to but keen to upgrade to wood.
Thanks

What is the best rod for Thunnus 8000 used for bottom bashing and plastics.
Submitted by Angler83 on Wed, 2013-11-06 20:13Trying to match a rod for my Thunnus 8000 running 50lb braid. I've looked at daiwa monster mesh/demon blood but like the terez as I think I would be able to feel more on the plastics. I fish everything from northwest snapper, bluebone to jewfish. Any advice would be appreciated my Price range is up to $300

Help catching flatties on lures
Submitted by Fisher Kid on Wed, 2013-11-06 16:31Hi guys, im 15, its almost holdidays and ive only got one more set of exams then im done for the year :)
Ive been hitting up the river near zephers café, around to bicton baths using scorpions, blades and sp's. IM really having trouble getting flatties. Mainly I don't think im working my lures right.
Any info about what type of bibbed lures are good and how to retrieve them, as well as info on how to retrieve blades/vibes would be really appreciated. Also some basic locations around pt walter would be great to get me started as I cant drive (yet) and both my parents don't like fishing, so I gotta walk or ride. I ask this mainly because ive put hours and hours into fishing the flats east of pt walter along burke drive, but no luck, no hits, its too weedy and never seen anything other than mullet there.
I just really want to get my retrieves working well and get into my first ever flattie on lure. (been trying for years)
(and yes ive used the search bar and read all the latest threads :)
Thanks, Nic

Swan river Crabs?
Submitted by Goodz on Wed, 2013-11-06 13:10Hey guys, anyone been having a go at the crabs in the Swan lately? I've never personally tried for them in the river before but since Cockburn is closed still (correct me if I'm wrong?) I was wondered if it's worth trying the river this weekend otherwise it's a KG hunt in the sound. Any hot tips are also welcome on the swan crabbing, feel free to PM ;)
thanks guys,
Ben.

GOOD REEL FOR CASTING LIGHT LURES
Submitted by pale ale on Wed, 2013-11-06 09:39I dont do much light tackle fishing up here in the Pilbara, but want to seriously give these whiting a crack on poppers.
My existing "squid reel" accidently got a saltwater christening by my missus, so I reckon I deserve to treat myself to a nice new reel.
I have read a bit about reels which lay the line for increased casting distance etc, but cant remember what was what. My best option is to ask the experts.....
What reel do you think is the best for casting light lures as far as possible??

Barges group venture?
Submitted by Spitfire56 on Tue, 2013-11-05 21:00Hello all, I am on leave the last week of November and weather permitting planning to fish hard for Samson's and keen to explore the barges off rotto. Given the distance and the fact I haven't done this before I was wondering if anyone would be keen on a group venture? Don't want anyone's spots or anything ( don't think there are too many secrets). Wondered if there was anyone in the same situation and would consider a convoy/ group trip?
My rig 5.75m Cruise Craft Explorer 150hp Yamaha, 160l of fuel. Idea would be similar capability rig meet and leave at the same time, catch a heap of fish, big day, come home etc
Just throwing it out there if anyone is keen, would also be a benifit as we could spread out once on location to find the action
Cheers

Which braid for Quobba
Submitted by Brad Park on Tue, 2013-11-05 18:38Hi all,
heading to Quobba in a few weeks and wondering what braid most prefer to use up there. Always used power pro, fins or suffix but would be interested to know what others use and why. I like the idea of thinner diameter for casting but worried about that around the rocks. Any suggestions would be great.
cheers, Brad.

Furuno FCV - 587
Submitted by Occy85 on Mon, 2013-11-04 19:20Hello,
I was wondering if anyone runs the furuno sounders in there boats? I have a furuno FCV-587 and was hoping to get a few tips on how to better use it. I currently sit my sounder on the zoom setting and wind the gain up till I get a little bit of intererence to try and pick the fish up. I have the split screen happening so on the left I have the bottom lock on 5 meters. Is that what most people use? Or is there another setting that I should be using. Really trying to pick up the reds and Nannys on the bottom.
Any feedback would be great
Thank

Killer whale sounds to scare away sharks
Submitted by rigpig on Mon, 2013-11-04 07:43I think any shark deterrent research is a good thing and I don't have any real concerns about this other than, will it also scare away fish as well??
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/newshome/19663307/killer-whale-sounds-to-scare-away-sharks/
WA scientists will broadcast killer whale "screams" through underwater speakers this summer to see if they scare away great white, tiger and hammerhead sharks from Perth beaches.
The University of WA research is the latest bid by scientists to better understand the sharks and safeguard swimmers after a horror spate of attacks in the past two years.
It also comes after an ABC program last night suggested killer whales, or orcas, were the great white shark's only natural predator - a theory long held but, until now, little tested.
UWA Associate Professor Nathan Hart, a sensory neurologist, said mimicking killer whale calls through soundwaves had been shown to deter sharks.
But Professor Hart said the idea was last tested in the 1970s and did not involve big predatory sharks, meaning little was known about how effective it would be with white pointers.
Under the new trial to begin in January, researchers will try to lure tiger and great white sharks before broadcasting the replicated sound of a killer whale to determine whether the predators react.
Depending on its success, the trial could pave the way for the technology to be used as a shark deterrent off Perth beaches including Scarborough and Cottesloe, where conditions make shark barriers unsuitable.
"With a little bit of anecdotal evidence and possibly the odd YouTube video I think it's accepted that killer whales are natural predators of most sharks," Professor Hart said. "They (researchers in the 1970s) basically analysed the call of the orca and tried to pull out the essence of it and this was shown to make sharks go away from the test area.
"Given we have access to white sharks and tiger sharks and hammerheads . . . up and down the WA coast, it's a really good idea to visit this in case it's got legs.
"But it's very early days."
Despite the optimism, Professor Hart said mimicking killer whale sounds would not be a panacea for the safety of swimmers because sharks could become "habituated" to it if overexposed.
"We're testing lots of repellents at the moment and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't work," Professor Hart said.
Premier Colin Barnett has lauded the research, which is being carried out as part of multimillion-dollar efforts to test the effectiveness of existing deterrents and investigate new ones.

Boat capabilities advice
Submitted by joycey on Sun, 2013-11-03 23:24Hi guys,
I have a 5.3m haines hunter fibreglass cuddy cab with a 115 hp motor.
Had it for 18 months and so far furthest out I've been is to back of FFB out from the Sound.
This year after the ban hoping to head out further to the 40m mark south of Rottnest to try and catch some Dhu's etc.
Just wondering if my boat is suitable for this distance offshore.
I only fish in nice conditions but as we know things can change quickly when out at sea,
Thanks for any advice.
