PFD's
Submitted by Cruise Control on Thu, 2013-10-31 16:15How many people wear a PFD when they go out in their boat fishing ?
I have often wondered what would happen if the boat went over and we had to scramble for jackets that are in the cabin. To that end at the boatshow I purchased a couple of Spinlock vests that you wear all the time. Quite small with gas inflate and go off when submerged for more than a couple of seconds. I have a Stormy but not really as comfortable as the Spinlock which is quite small with an excellent harness.
What do you do ?

Shimano Trinidad 30A handle upgrade
Submitted by Noxious on Thu, 2013-10-31 13:02G'day
Had my Trinidad 30A for about 12months now, great reel. I use it for just about everything from bottom bouncing to trolling. Has handled everything I've thrown at it, including some good Sambo's and Kingy's.
The one thing I have never liked about it is the handle. It is white so it gets dirty easy, and I have never been a big fan of the ergonomics of the handle.
I used a T-bar handle on a mates reel the other day and loved it, felt good to hold and powerful.
Bought this for the Trinidad off fleabay

anyone used one before? thoughts?

Tell Recfishwest how to spend your licence money:
Submitted by MattG on Thu, 2013-10-31 12:00Each year recreational fishers contribute approximately $6 million to the cost of managing recreational fisheries in WA through licence fees. Twenty five percent of licence revenue is allocated to the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF). This fun focusses on projects that directly benefit recreational fishing.
Recfishwest wants to hear your views on where your licence money should be spent. Your feedback on this very important issue will aid Recfishwest in guiding the expenditure of RFIF funds. Please take the time to fill out the survey, loacted at the link below. If you need any extra encouragement, everyone who completes the survey goes into a draw to win one of three Daiwa spinning reels valued at $200 each!!
The information gathered throughout this survey will provide direction for your licence money expenditure. Be sure to pass the link on to all of your family and friends who enjoy fishing, even if only occasionally.

Rod for stradic 8000
Submitted by Aaron_Moses95 on Thu, 2013-10-31 11:11Hi guys,
I currently have an 8000 staradic fj spooled with 30lb and spare spool with 50lb. However I am yet to match it up with a rod, im not sure what to buy. Mostly will be using it for mulloway and land based sambos off the rocks. Willing to pay up to $150, I know that's not much but im sure there is something decent out there that will do the trick.
So what would u guys recommend?
Cheers in advance

Freezing spangled emperor
Submitted by Griffo84 on Thu, 2013-10-31 10:39G'day everyone,
Just chasing your opinion on the eating quality of Spango's after they've been frozen. On 3 different occasions I have eaten spango's after being frozen and find them surprisingly tough considering some of the fillets had only been frozen for 2 weeks. I initially thought I may have over cooked them however I don't believe this is the case as I cooked a piece of spanish mack for the same time and it turned out delicious. My old man even said his batch of spango was tough.
Your thoughts?

Beach condition around Hill River?
Submitted by Formerathlete on Wed, 2013-10-30 16:10Has anyone been on the beach between Cervantes and Jurien recently? Hill River? I'm thinking about an overnighter on Saturday (fishing not camping of course) and just wondering how much weed there is and how soft the beach is? Hoping for evening Tailor and to put some bigger baits out at night. Maybe also baloon in the morning. Any reports appreciated.
Cheers

Polystyrene foam transport box performance
Submitted by jighead on Wed, 2013-10-30 13:18Can anybody tell me how long I can expect my fish to stay frozen in one of those polystyrene foam transport boxes. It will be filled to the brim with frozen fillets, sealed with duct tape and transported in my car with the aircon going. It has been recommended to me to not use ice in the box.

Cervantes from a Yak
Submitted by tappy on Wed, 2013-10-30 10:33G'day troops. I'm off to Cervantes for a long long weekend with the kids and my outback will be on the roof, so... If I manage to redeem a few well earned "me" time I'd like to make the most of it and not waste it looking for a bite. I'll be happy to get a fees of squid and then use some to get some whiting. I was thinking of heading out to the bay on the southern side between the island and the mainland early in the am. I've windsurfers across it heaps and it is good weed/sand ground. Has anyone had any luck there or am I wasting my time. I might also have a night surf fish on the northern beach as Subday night is looking windless. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cockburn Cement Jetty Help
Submitted by buschy on Tue, 2013-10-29 19:50Hit up the cement jetty today for the first time. Got honked by the dredger....didn't think he was coming in that close!!!
Just wandering if anyone fishes around there fairly regularly - what to expect. Got a few herring and small tarwhine today. I assume whiting will be thick in summer. Anything bigger turn up there? Should I fish in the hole or further up the beach?
Thanks
Buschy :-)

And I'm Back!
Submitted by DieHard on Tue, 2013-10-29 19:42Hey all guys/girls
For those who dont know me i'm Eric and I like to fish!
My commitment to schooling of years 11 & 12 have lead me to give up the whole fishing scene for a long time, too long infact! How ever finally graduated I now have alllllll the time in the world to pick up where i left off and chase those monsters! The last time i whipped out my Over heads and big gear and targetted the bigger species is definitely end of 2011 - beginning of 2012! Its time for me to dust off the rods, service the reels (hopefully not) and wind on some new line, bring out the leader and tackle and make some new fresh rigs! In early December i will be getting my car license, and having a 4wd ill be able to get to those tricky spots without the treck of a walk ;)
Anyways below are some pictures of the few sessions ive had in over a year, the pike was caught just off little island, and soon after i got spooled by a mini sambo! The buff bream is from hillary's marina where i've barley made several sessions there! Some absolute monsters that day with absolutely no way of landing them!
Hopefully see you ALLLLL out there on the water or casting from the beach! ill be very prominent in the areas of hillarys marine etc. after the next 2 weeks, come up and say hey!
Cheers,
Eric!

Shark bay help please
Submitted by brucedog1 on Tue, 2013-10-29 18:38Hi Guys
I am planning a trip to shark bay with family and friends camping and fishing. I have convinced the wife that it is definitly worth towing the boat (18 foot swiftcraft) the 800 odd kms for the fortnight.
Problem is I have no knowledge of the area at all.
I have begun starting to pour over the charts.
Question is is the bay productive or do I need to load up with shitloads of fuel and swag and head up around the top of the island and out to the deep water?
Any help, tips or advise would be fantastic.
thanks in advance

Recreational Cray Potting
Submitted by big john on Mon, 2013-10-28 19:01Thinking about giving the rec cray potting thing a go over the Xmas holidays, how serious does one need to be to get a feed and not have crays knocked off by others etc.
What efforts do you go to successfully recreational pot for crays? Is it worth doing or should I just hook up my boat with some keen divers?

experiment time
Submitted by psion on Mon, 2013-10-28 11:33with the Ban on
decided I am going to use the time for a bit of exploring, both locations and techniques.
decided to try my hand a fly tying with beads and kids craftware.
I recon these flys can be flicked with a fly rod as well as cast, with a tiny ball sinker.
should be good for herring (and maybe skippy) in a berly trail.
so testing time nex weekend.

Tried The epoxy fly with Beads

And A squid pattern with a pipe cleaner

and with the lights off.

ADMIN
please move this to the fly fishing section,
I think it belongs there now

Mako Jumped into boat in Geo Bay
Submitted by timboon on Mon, 2013-10-28 10:33A mates brother was fishing on the Wkend in Geo Bay catching a few Skippy, I`m not sure where but he`s usually about 7 mile out when they had a big 8 ish ft Mako free jump past the back of the boat and then its mate jumped straight into the boat... I`m not sure how long exactly, 8ft was mentioned but without a pic ?? Attached is a pic of the beasts head only... The fisheries came past shortly after and asked whether they were catching anything, they replied not really by choice... Apparently the fishpigs were impressed and took some happy snaps before moving on...

Bleeding a fish WITHOUT opening up its whole throat
Submitted by Notorious on Sun, 2013-10-27 23:05One can still bleed a fish well without having to cut/disconnect its whole throat from its body. Fish with big gaping gaps where their throat used to be dont present well in photos I think.
Just run a knife under the gills and you will slice its main arteries and ensure it adequately bleeds out and still have an intact fish for a nice photo :)

ASunday Funny
Submitted by catchalittle on Sun, 2013-10-27 18:11This one couldnt wait till Friday so here's a Sunday funny
Do you fart in bed ?
If this story doesn't make you cry for laughing so hard, let me know and I’ll pray for you. This is a story about a couple who had been happily married for years, the only friction in their marriage was the husband’s habit of farting loudly every morning when he awoke the noise would wake his wife and the smell would make her eyes water and make her gasp for air.
Every morning...
she would plead with him to stop ripping them off because it was making her sick. He told her he couldn't stop it and that it was perfectly natural. She told him to see a doctor, she was concerned that one day he would blow his guts out. The years went by and he continued to rip them out. Then one Christmas day morning, as she was preparing the turkey for dinner and he was upstairs sound asleep, she looked at the innards, neck, gizzard, liver and all the spare parts, and a malicious thought came to her. She took the bowl and went upstairs where her husband was sound asleep and, gently pulling the bed covers back, she pulled back the elastic waistband of his underpants and emptied the bowl of turkey guts into his shorts. Sometime later she heard her husband waken with his usual trumpeting which was followed by a blood curdling scream and the sound of frantic footsteps as he ran into the bath room. The wife could hardly control herself as she rolled on the floor laughing, tears in her eyes! After years of torture she reckoned she had got him back pretty good. About twenty minutes later, her husband came downstairs in his blood stained underpants with a look of horror on his face. She bit her lip as she asked him what was the matter. He said, “Honey you were right… all these years you have warned me and I didn't listen to you.” “What do you mean?” asked his wife. “Well, you always told me that one day I would end up farting my guts out, and today it finally happened, but by the grace of god, some Vaseline and two fingers. I think I got most of them back in…….............….
.”
