I'm posting here because it is a long weekend and the weather is looking promising for some crew to get out wide. If anyone can catch one, we'd love a donation......
In case you can't be bothered with the links (but please do...) it looks like this (from LukeR)

Greenwashing’ forces poor policy on Australian seafood consumption
Known internationally for myth-busting on fisheries and oceans management, Dr Ray Hilborn will launch a research paper on Australian fisheries that says marine parks do more harm than good in sustainable fisheries management.
Dr Hillborn, (Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington State) maintains that Australia and the world’s seafood supply is threatened by unwarranted concern about the sustainability of fisheries as portrayed by environmental NGOs.
As Australia is set to get the world’s largest marine park in the Coral Sea, world-renowned marine scientist Dr Hilborn has debunked the science behind the lock-up of Australia’s seafood resources as ‘faith based’ and not science.
He maintains Australian fisheries are sustainably managed, yet governments continue to lock up vast areas of our ocean’s natural resources, threatening consumer access to Australian seafood and impacting food security (noting Horvat’s hesitance re food security angle).
He says fisheries have low environmental impact compared to other sources of food production.
As part of a week-long visit hosted by The Sydney Fish Market, Dr Hilborn will launch a paper which dispels the ‘faith based’ science being touted internationally by enviro NGOs.
The truth is:
• World fisheries stocks will not collapse by the year 2048, as is often claimed, or any other time soon;
• The majority of the world’s fish stocks are not over-fished;
• Commercial fisheries are not “fishing down the food web” (starting with large species and gradually fishing their way to a point where nothing will be left but jellyfish); and
• Large marine protected areas are not required to restore fish numbers.
Dr Hillborn has called upon the fisheries community to question the strong movement of faith-based acceptance of ideas, and a search for data that support these ideas, rather than critical and skeptical analysis of the evidence.
Context:
• Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke’s proposal for a one million square kilometre marine park includes a complete ban on trawling, with additional restrictions on commercial fishing and a complete no take zone for amateur and professional fishermen in the green zone component.
• Already Australia imports 70% of its fish – if we lock up Australia’s fishing resources in marine parks Aussies won’t have access to Australian fish
• Australia’s fisheries are amongst the most conservatively managed in the world. Most of the world is aware of this, but Australia actively refuses to accept the credit!
About Hilborn
Professor Hilborn has extensive experience with Australian fisheries and has given numerous lecture courses in Australia since 1983. His written work is extensive and includes 4 books and 255 scientific papers and book chapters.
His contribution to environmental and fisheries science has been recognised by many awards including the Volvo Environmental Prize, the Ecological Society of Americas Sustainability Science Award, American Fisheries Society Award of Excellence and the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists Outstanding Achievement Award.

the need for a swivel in a handline
Submitted by randall df223 on Tue, 2012-02-28 22:06hey, this may be a bizzare forum topic, but humour me, please.... for my sanity
my wife will only fish with a handline, and does it very well. is there an absolute need for a swivel between the main line and the leader? or would a double uni knot be sufficient? I am thinking about just reducing the number of connections in the line to reduce the chance of breakages or swivels giving way. the 80lb main line will have a running sinker clip and teardrop or bomb sinker, tied to a 100 lb leader which will be tied to a no 8 circle hook. to be used in shallow water in shark bay (less than 12 metres)
in the past have used a paternoster rig with success, but just trying to simplify things in the shallower water.
input from old timers especially appreciated!!!

Fishing/ Spearing trip round oz on a pushy
Submitted by alex-2481 on Tue, 2012-02-28 20:28Hey guys,
New to the forum but browsing through some of the threads it looks like there is an abundance of valuable information and knowledge to tap into and thought it would be a crime not to post my proposed adventure up here. By the looks of things im not the first to do such a trip as i came across a thread similar to this on here.
I plan to circumnavigate Australia on my bicycle, fishing and spearing the coastline where i can, looking for work along the way to top up supplies enough for the essentials. I start next week (9th March 2012), leaving Byron Bay and heading north. It will be great to meet other keen fisho's along the way, so please dont hesitate if you have the time to get in touch. As you know good fishing opportunities can be hard to find when you are away from your own special spots.
ive been fishing since before i can remember and was lucky enough to grow up on a boat with my old man, fishing most of the east coast. Over the last 5 years i havnt had access to a boat and have become quiet the keen rockhopper around my local headland, Cape Byron. If anyone has any advice, work, or are willing to put up with me for a days fishing i would be extremely grateful.
well, cheers for now and will be great to hear from you.
Alex

Submitted by BigClarky on Tue, 2012-02-28 15:57Gday Lads,
I am planning an over night session this saturday at Rotto. My Fisheries mate is up from Esperance for the weekend, so he will be tagging along.
Probably heading out from Fremantle early arvo, and fishing the south side (30-50's) till dark. Depending on how the wind and swell forecast develops over the next 3-4 days, I am planning to sleep on the boat in Geordie Bay at my mates mooring. Then get up early sunday and catch some liveys and hit up the FADS all sunday.
Hopefully the forecasted weather continues to ease and I am able to get amongst it and give you boys a good report sunday evening.

New Release Rules from IGFA
Submitted by Alan James on Tue, 2012-02-28 13:01This maybe of interest to some, the IGFA has announced the following new release rules.
Recreational anglers – whether weekend fishermen, world record hunters, or tournament competitors – are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to conserve the fish they love to pursue. As they call for more and better science to strengthen the health of fisheries the world over, they have also looked for ways to reduce the impact of their hobby on game fish species. In particular, more and more tournaments are adopting an all-release format, necessitating a standard for released catches. Answering this need, the International Game Fish Association has codified a new set of Release Rules to clarify and support the ideals of ethical recreational angling.
It is IGFA’s hope that establishing a definition for an “official IGFA release” will not only institute a standard by which anglers can compare releases, but also, and more importantly, encourage anglers to continue releasing fish. At its recent annual board meeting in January, the IGFA Board of Trustees approved the following:
IGFA will consider a fish officially released when one of the following actions is completed:
A. The mate is able to grab the leader
B. The swivel hits the rod tip
C. The connection (knot, splice, etc.) between the leader and the mainline/double line/ fly line passes through the rod tip
Leader lengths must conform to current IGFA tackle requirements. Specifically, for line up to and including 10 kg (20 lb) the leader may not exceed 15 feet. In lines over 10 kg (20 lb), the leader may not be in excess of 30 feet. All leader measurements are inclusive of the lure or hook arrangement and are measured to the bend of the last hook. IGFA tackle requirements for fly fishing do not stipulate a maximum overall length for fly leaders. However, since IGFA rules do not allow class tippets heavier than 10 kg (20 lb), IGFA will adopt the convention of allowing a maximum fly leader length of 15 feet in keeping in accordance with the regulations for conventional tackle. Fly leader length is inclusive of the fly and will be measured to the bend of the last hook. Shock tippets may not measure more than 12 inches (30.48 cm) in length and class tippets must be a minimum of 15 inches (38.10 cm) in length.
This new rule sets a standard for a released catch, and makes release formats more accessible for tournaments – many of which already use IGFA Rules as the basis for their tournament rules.
“Anything we can do to promote the proper release of fish, especially in a tournament setting, is good,” IGFA President Rob Kramer said. “By establishing rules for what constitutes a release, the IGFA hopes to facilitate more fish making it back to the water alive and in the best possible health.”
While adopting this rules change, the IGFA Board of Trustees also saw the unique and beneficial opportunity to create a recommendation for best practices for safe and ethical release of fish:
• Circle hooks are encouraged when fishing with live or dead natural bait
• The hook should be removed if possible and will not cause additional harm to angler or fish
• If the hook cannot be removed, the leader should be cut as close to hook as possible
• Mates should refrain from manually breaking or “popping” leaders because this can cause additional harm to fish, especially those not hooked in the jaw.
• Ample time should be taken to revive exhausted fish by gently moving them forward in the water to get water flowing over the gills.
• Knotless, rubber coated nets should be used on fish that are netted.
“Anglers have realized that in order for our sport to thrive, we must each take responsibly for being good stewards of our resources,” Kramer added. “The IGFA is proud to be taking a progressive part in that effort with these changes and recommendations.”
