Swag - any good ???
Submitted by pembo6 on Sun, 2012-01-22 22:41I am looking at getting a Swag for the occasional fishing overnighter. Currently use a 3 man tent, which is fine when I go with 1 of my kids. But its too annoying to put up when I am on my own.
Just after some comments on what a swag is like to sleep in (particularly at the beach). Are they any good, or a waste of time. Stinkin hot?
I notice there are dozens on gumtree, so I was wondering why so many people are wanting to sell them ...."only used twice"..... or "never used, excellent condition"...???
Any suggestions as to what style? Any advice would be great. I dont want to be another one of these guys advertising a brand new swag on gumtree.
thanks

New baitcast rod??
Submitted by Braxi on Sun, 2012-01-22 22:11Hi, I had the joy of getting up the creek for a fish over the weekend. Only to snap my Shimano T-curve on an unfortunately hooked turtle. So now I am in the hunt for a new barra rod. Any recommendations in the $100-$250 range? I have an Ian miller raider and am happy with that but just checking if there is something out there that may be better. Cheers.

Fish Finder Magazine
Submitted by Gaz Mero on Sun, 2012-01-22 20:05Has anybody else bought the latest edition of Australian Fish Finder magazine?
I have never seen this mag before but it looked bloody good and it needed to be for the price $28 , there was only one on the stand at the local so though why not .
Apparently it comes out every couple of years and Im glad I got it , it has sattelite pics of all decent fishing spots from Perth right round to Sydney pretty much . It also has all the marine parks and exclusion zones with tips on areas to fish , boat ramp locations , and heaps of gps co-ords which obviously you would only use to get close to certain areas, they dont pin point fishing spots.
It will come in very handy this year as I have a couple of trips planned to exxy and other places and having never been there before had been wondering how I was going to get the info I was looking and this mag had most of my questions answered.
Recomend it for sure.
Cheers
Gaz

Shark - What kind?
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2012-01-22 16:44Heres a few screen grabs from a dodgy underwater video of the shark I spent 45mins taming on PE6 jig gear on Sat. Just wondering what type of shark it is, obviously some sort of whaler? Estimate it was 3m+ when boatside, hard to tell from the pics. That's my rod tip in the pics too incase anyone was wondering... poor monster mesh couldn't handle it!

!!I KICKED TROYS BUTT TODAY!!
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2012-01-21 20:17Hi guys
for those who know, troy(my son) has been kicking my arse out on the deep blue latley...until today!!
goodz, troy and myself headed to o/reef today with the full intentions of trolling for mackies, left the marina at 4.30am and headed out to start trolling and thats where it pretty much stoped, too much weed and made it near on impossible to troll for more that 30sec without having to clear the lures.
so we packed up and headed for the deep....
started well with alot of fish coming over the side...
ben was on the jigs with me and troy on baits, baits won hands down today.
went quite fo a couple of hours until we decided to send some burly out and have a floater in the trail...
all of a sudden some dollies showed up chasing bens placcy around but not wanting to hit it, about 5mins later bens floater goes off and ben is loaded up big time
turned out to be a 3.5-4mtr shark which put some serious hurt on ben and his rod(pics and maybe a video to follow)
i lost 2 big hookups, half way up each time, pulled hooks so maybe going to hard on them?
troy at this stage had not got alot, whatching dad do all the hard yards pulling fish after fish, some good, some shit.
then i get hit again with something solid, so took it a little slower and managed this nice size pinky 77cm...happy chappy and letting troy know all about it.
fish of the day goes to me and not troy for a change.
we ended up getting for the day
4 nice size baldies (2 kept)
8 dhuys all under size with only one needing the release wait.
4 nice size b/ass (2 kept) plus lots of small ones
about 4 big srgt bakers
skippy
my pinky
and all the normal shit like wrasse and football sweep.
all in all, this post is just to hang shit on troy, he dosent always catch all the fish!!!!
cheers ron
ben loaded up big time, with some serious hurt getting put on him

some serious hurt still getting put on ben with his seriously hurt rod

my pinky...fish of the day!!

Dramas at Hillarys today
Submitted by ledge64 on Sat, 2012-01-21 20:15A few dramas at Hillarys today that I witnessed while eye candying...... first the Sea Resuce boat towed in a boat about a 4.5M half cabin upside down and there was no top left when turned upright, another boat came in with someone distressed and had to be taken away in an ambulance and lastly a boat named Wicked came off the trailer as it was being launched. looked as though the ratchet pin on the winch snapped. anyone else see these mishaps?

fishing in phuket?
Submitted by hekser on Sat, 2012-01-21 18:17Hi all,
taking the missus to phuket in august, wondering if anyone has any experiences to share? tips to be had, hints to be dropped? somewhere in between the ping pong shows and the copious drinking id like to find time to get my fish on, already doing some "big game charter" that was an option when i booked the4 holiday (expedia.com) no idea how that will play out but 72$ for 9 hours. ill give it a go.. also thinking about doing a sea kayaking tour, ill just take a rod and some lures with me and get my troll on...
anyone fished there or all to busy drinking / rooting?
cheers :D

Crabbing Info.
Submitted by Trueblue3 on Sat, 2012-01-21 13:54G'day All,
Just wondering if there is any do / don'ts of Catching some blue swimmer Crabs in the Swan River, with regards to fisheries giving you a fine.
I understand the size, more so is it illegal to use certain baits in your net??? and the boat limit is 20 yes?
What is the best bait, been using Chicken necks latly...Just thought I would ask the question so I dont get ANOTHER nasty fine from Fisheries.....
Cheers everyone.

Weird holes in sand seen while snorkeling the swan?
Submitted by Dicey on Sat, 2012-01-21 02:23I was snorkeling the lower reaches of the swan and stumbled upon a patch of 6-10 dolphin or shark shaped holes 1.5-2m long probably 30cm deep at the deepest point, unlike stingray holes which are round, was in about 1-1.5m of water and looked pretty fresh, any ideas what could have done it?

Boat Launching Question
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Fri, 2012-01-20 15:52Hi Fishwrecked
Just one question about launching our boat.
When we back the boat in the water and start to undo the winch, the boat flies out of control and slips very quickly off the roller trailer, and you just have to let it run because theres nothing you can do. We tried to fix it by backing the boat further in the water so there is less strain on the winch, which worked a bit but am not that keen in taking the car for a swim. Also tried tying a rope from the boat to the winch post but it got tangled and didnt work.
Most of the time i drive on/ off but when theres a jetty there i plan on using it.
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers SRF

14kg Metro Mackerel Yesterday (19th Jan 2012)
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2012-01-20 14:15With the forecast looking smick I had to go out for a Metro Mackerel sesh!
Trolling Rapala X-Rap 30 in bluesardine & Halco 190XDD green-gold in 25-30m of reefy structure, Black Pete Mirror teaser and many hours of trolling!
Hours into it I got a strike and the ratchet screeming, after two more solid runs I landed the Metro Mackerel that simply made my day. The conditions were awesome and I kept on trolling but no more strikes so I packed it in!
I was solo that day so I went pass my shop to get a picture (Thanks Blake) and get a weight.
Digital scales went just over 14kg ........ Happy Days
14kg Metro Mackerel
