drifting baits

has anyone had any experience with kayaking baits out? we have been doing it but cant seem to stop our lines drifting over eachother or just drifting basically back into shore. we are leaving the baits about 4-5m underwater and keeping them off the bottom to avoid rays but does anyone have a way to reduce the drift or is it uncontrolable in the wrong conditions with shit tides, winds etc?

any help would be good,

cheers

Does lighter line catch more fish?

Hi Fishwrecked

Just wondering, does lighter line catch, or atleast get more bites than heavier line?

I have been running 30lb main line to a 50lb or even an 80lb leeder when targetting snapper and dhufish. If i went a line with a smaller diameter, do you think this would improve my bites and hook up rates?

I was thinking of having a lighter leeder of about 15kg.

Also, i picked up some ockta jigs in pink/green and green/ white colour in the 120 gram size. I've been reading in previous threads that they are good jigs for snapper/ dhufish. on the packet it says a slow retrieve. anyone else have a different retrieval method that they are willing to share?

Thanks

nor west blowies

hey there fellas,

been lucky enough to get into some fishing recently, i normally fish south rotto behind 5fb thereabouts.

however in the last three trips out we've caught norwest blowies, and over the last ten years we've not caught 1.

one of the schools would have been as big as a football field. these things were hitting jigs, placcies and everything.

anyone else caught these things any where else? am afraid that these blowies will become like the swan river blowies and plague this area. any thoughts of this?

thanks

Metro mackies

How do every one go today? weather was beautiful and I decided to stay home and fit my new snorkel to my car today meanwhile my mates went out and cleaned up on all sorts of tasty demersals bagging out befor lunch time so decided to troll on the way home and bagged a 9 and 12 kg macky on the way back to the ramp!

Sustainable fisheries in the METRO area

Hi all,

I don't think that too many people would disagree if I said that fishing in the landbased area is slowly on the decline and has been for a number of years. I know there are a number of factors relating to this, that are in no way related to the behaviours of fisherfolk - but wanted to put forward a hypothetical question to seek some of your opinions.

We already have a regulated metropolitan fishery - with a number of guidelines, catch limits, size limits, seasonal restraints and so on. Would you support a 'Metropolitan Fishing Code of Practice' for Perth?

A code of practice is not law, but simply a framework or set of guidelines. In my opinion, a code of practice could cover off any number of topics that would help support a sustainable fishery. Things like the use of barbless hooks, removal of rubbish, safe release of fish, minimum size limits or catch limits for some species where perhaps fisheries may not quite have it right.

Not only would you support it....but as a freely available document (with posters, etc at popular fishing spots) - do you think it would have an impact on how our fisheries are treated at present?

BTW - I'm mainly angling (pun intended) at landbased fishers. As jealous as I am, I think boaters have enough to deal with. The ocean is vast and probably not as high a risk as areas such as popular perth beaches, jetties, river spots, etc.

Cheers,

Buschy

Marlin

Heard a romour a 200kg blue was caught from rotto today...interesting

Super Deep " Firsts " for Rhyss & Sangeeta!

For people that know Rhyss he's the Furuno Sales manager for Taylor Marine (WA), ex president of PGFC and a top bloke. I've known Rhyss now for a while and we both love our Furuno electronics & fishing so plenty in common. Rhyss has been keen to do the Super deep stuff for sometime now which he calles oglyee fishing!

Rhyss said get me out there please and is it ok to bring his lady. Sangeeta or Sang to her friends is great to have onboard plus she fishes. Sang has 3 World records for gamefish and is the PGFC Champion Female angler for the last 3 years!

I said no probs guys we'll head out Thursday and get amongst it. I fished a few spots but fish not being there so moved around a bit and found some quality super Deep species on the Furuno. Sang dropped baits down first and hooked up quickly to a fish. She fought it all the way to the top manually as we do and was wrapped to get her first Super deep fish a Blue eye Trevalla!

It was funny as she said thats small compared to the ones I've seen you post up on FW Ryan...........I said dont worry theres bigger ones down there. Ok, Rhyss was pumped and he dropped baits next and it wasnt long before he hooked up. I said leave your hooked fish down there to get a double header and that he did by the looks as my Jigging Master Evolution 400 overhead rod fully loaded up. Rhyss was a happy man as after a good fight his double header surfaced, a Greybanded cod & a hapuku.....his first Super deep species!

Happy days, now its time for Sang to drop a single bait as she had one fish already. I grabbed out two baits and she said I thought you said only one bait......I said yep one bait but a big one. Sangs switched on and said ohh no that means a big fish by your smirk Ryan

Down went the bulked up big slimy mackerel baits. Within a short time the rod loaded this time pulling her up against the gunnel and what ever was on the other end was very big. Many of these super Deep species fight hard and this fish didnt give up................after a great fight that took a while Sangs big fish was gaffed. It turned out to be a big Blue Eye Trevalla and Sang was spent after that fight. Rhyss & Sang had a great time and we headed in.........was good to see friends get their Firsts again and you cant meet nicer people.........top day guys

Sangeeta and her First Blue-eye Trevalla!

Rhyss and his Double header - Greybanded cod & a hapuku!

Sangeeta and her Second Blue-eye Trevalla which was a  stonker ......... quality

Moving to Freo soon

Hey guys, I'll be moving to Fremantle from Bunbury very soon. Since I haven't fished the surroundings(landbased) before I would much appreciate from anybody some tips on locations and what you would expect to catch there. P.M if you wish:) also what is the closest 4x4 access beach locations. Don't worry about me fishing out your spots because i dont eat fish and just fish for the fun of it. Looking foward to some new spots since ive fished every nook and cranny in bunbury:) thanks guys

Just moved to Perth from Sydney

Hey guys,

Sweet forum! I've just moved to Perth from Sydney - drove across. The weather's fantastic here. Anyhow, to the fishing...

I'm from country NSW and basically used to fishing in the Lachlan River, catching Murray Cod, Golden Perch and lots if bloody Carp - mainly on handreels.

I now live in Kensington, South Perth. I went into BCF today to get some gear. The bloke was really helpful and together we chose an outfit and gear to get me started. Anyhow...

I told him I'll probably start fishing in the Swan. I've got the following setup:

Diawa Crest 6102ML with a Diawa CrossFire 2500X reel and 4kg mono line. I'm basically looking for a bit of advice on where to fish, what to target and the kind of live baits to use and of course the type of basic sinker/hook setup. I also got some flurocarbon leader.

I literally have no idea about fishing in WA and am keen to learn as much as possible.

Also, I should mention, I only know my new housemates here, so definitely keen to meet anyone willing to share their favourite fishing theories and just to talk some rubbish in general. I'm a 29 year old single bloke, sports freak - mainly cricket. Moved to Perth for a fresh start.

Cheers,

Jamie

Sunday morning looking good

Sunday morning is looking very good for a very early fish,

may just take the son out for play on the new tub at sunrise and see what we find

noob question; soft plastics

howdy,   always been a bait or jig fisherman. have a few unopened packs of 7" macarthy plastics and reasonable sized jigheads (biggest ones i could find) in the tacklebox. just never used them...

something about me not thinking they had enough weight to get to where i wanna fish.. 40m  ... i got no problems with a snapper lead and a pasternoster loaded with squid, seems to hold bottom..  but how am i supposed to fish these plastics?

do i run a snapper lead and pasternoster with 2 plastics ?    running sinker to a swivel to the jighead/plastic?   how do i fish them?  can u fish them at 40m?

also lures, can u throw them on a pasternoster with a snapper lead and then bottom bounce ?  will they swim properly?

ive been soley bait for so long and its time to try out something new.. the tacklebox has heaps of stuff ive never used...

any hints?  cheers.

White hills

Just wondering if anyone has been down to white hills lately and what's it like.

Scarborough tomorrow

I am thinking of going for a wander along scarbs and tossing a twisty.  Do I need to go further north than that to be in the hunt for an early morning tailor?

Mullet on Lures?

Hi guys

I know the best way to catch mullet is with bread/ dough, but i was wondering if they can be caught on HB lures and/or soft plastics?

I walked down this morning and every plastic/ HB lure i threw on and next to the school just spooked them. Sometimes when it was right infront of their nose they just ignored it and swam over it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

White hills

Just wondering if anyone has been down to white hills lately and what's it like.

Exmouth Big game Charter

anyone with good charter companys in Exmouth...?

Good baitcaster reels?

Im thinking of getting my first baitcaster reel, What are some good reels that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Profile Filled In

Should have done this when I joined.

In doing so, I realised that the amount of gear I have is totally out of proportion with the miniscule amount of fishing I do.

Anyone wants to go out on a weekend, let me know (need a little notice as we have had our first child who is 1 year old and leave passes are harder to get these days).
