Shimano: Backbone Elite or Triton???

hey all

popped into the local fishing shop and saw to boat rods that i like

going to purchase either one

Shimano Backbone Elite

Shimano Triton

I like the Triton a lot lighter than the backbone, going to be using for trolling and bottom bashing...

but havent used either, so whats your opinions?

Cheers all!

Ice box, which one?

Hi all, I'm want to buy a decent icebox aprox 70 - 100lt.  I have looked at a few different types at BCF and other camping stores, but I don't know which one is best.  Also I think there are fibreglass and plastic boxes, are they both just as good.  I have looked at site sponsors, Extreme Coolers website and they look alright, but like i mentioned, I have never had a good icebox so I don't know what I am looking for or what to expect from a good icebox.

I was hoping you good people could give some advice in what I should look at.

Thanks heaps.

Daz's sneaky maccy

Me and Daz snuck in a very sneaky late arvo sess yesterday on the big rig. Only just got a chance to post.

I spend most of the day tracking down an electrical gremlin that has resulted in several failures of pretty expensive gear and many frustrating hours trcking it down, but finally found it (loose nut on a main battery feeder into the main breaker panel........jeeze!!!). After fixing it, called Daz to see if he wanted to come for a test run for 20 minutes. He rocked up with 2 trolling outfits and a couple of lures, and it was on!

Daz  got this nice maccy on very light gear.We had no knife, no gaff, no esky, no ice....well, basically we had nothing but two rods and three lures.... top stuff dude, many high fives!

I lost mine 15 minutes minutes later after it bit through the leader ahead of the wire.........

It just got better today(see Daz's post).

What a day...

Hey all

havent posted a thread in a while...

today was a day like no other...

we decided to go for a boat out to behind 3 mile near scarbs area, some new ground...

we launched at ocean reef at 9am, trolled some twisties to mullaloo point with no success...

we then go to hillarys marina, anchored up east of one of the reefs, sent out some 10g twisties onto the reef and cranking in fast, BAM BAM BAM!!! herring into a frenzy jumping out of the water for the twisties! only landed 5 but about 20 hookups, lost so many when the jump clear of the water and shake like nuts!

from there we chugged a long until we intercepted the Rotto ferry path... we were following it on the gps so we could safely get it (never been any further south west..) well 1km from our spot and we were in the middle of the path when VOOM reef everywhere infront of us and under us! quick backed up did a Uy and went around it. we were confused as the track lead us head to head into reef!

we got to our spot and finally set anchor. checked GPS and we werent drifting... lines over and within a few minutes i see dad had his 2-4kg rod out and it was screaming! ahahah, anyways gave the rod to me and it had no head shakes but dead weight,  a ray... was peeling line off when i tightend the drag and snap! rod snapped and whacked me across the forhead ahahah!

with a few wrasse landed we started getting serious hits and what looked like  4 -5 larger fish on the sounder... but before we knew it our bilge pump turned out POURING out water!

dad asked me what it was and i said the bilge pump

then dad said oh kool

and at the same time we said oh shit its not meant to be on :O

i quickly opened up the little hole in the deck floor and the hull had around 15cm of water in it!

SHIIIIIIIIIZT!!!!!
before i knew it all lines were up and it was 60km alll the way back to ocean reef with the water level slowly rising....

hit the ramps and cut in front of a ffew boats dad ran up and got the trailer while i pulled the boat onto the actual ramp....

was one of the quickest retrivels ever!

pulled up and the buns were tightly in, opened them up and the poured out water for minutes on end.

few close call, good thing bilge pumps are automatic!!!!!

we suspect that one of the seals in the stern drives legs have split or there may be a split between the seal for the gasket....

with boating now finished for the day, there went our trolling aswell!!!

Cheers all!

Fishing Foxtel Question

prawning lights

g'day guys

as shown on a previous post i have made some new lights for this years prawning.

these are all led and worked a treat, with half the amount of current draw.

i tested them last night and they produced good even light and after 3 hrs in the water still no sign of dulling down on 1 batt, it looks like i will be able to run them all night no probs at all.

here is a couple of pics

now bring on the prwans after exxy!!!!

WTB: Fishing Kayak

 Hi Guys,

Looking for a good fishing Kayak, so if you have any fishing kayaks for sale can you please let me know.

Cheers Dan

Lift to Exxy comp for my tackle bag anyone?

Had an offer to take some gear up there for me but I missed the boat so once again looking for someone heading up for the comp that could take up my tackle bag for me as I'm flying up there on friday. Also may have a rod or 2 to go up to if I can't fit them in my rod tube. Obviously a few brews in it for anyone that can help me out! Prefer someone SOR but if not will drive NOR too.... Otherwise I'll be fishing jigless and naked so I can take the gear on the plane... and we don't want that!

WANTED! Half cabin boat

Looking for a half cabin boat, no more than 5 metres, good condition, good trailer, would prefer a 4 stroke, but a 2 stroke is ok, must be able to sleep in the cabin, would also prefer if the seats fold to the side, thanks, message me if you have a boat for sale (:

Fishing today???

 G'day everyone..

It looks like the wind is going to die off to nothing later in the day.. Just wondering if its worth taking the boat out.. I've only got a 4.2m boat set-up for chasing bream but wouldn't mind getting out in the sound (or anywhere around Rockingham) to try catch something different.. Not really keen on heading miles offshore.. Can anyone point me in the right direction..

Cheers.. Have a good one

cycling and fishing western Australia

Hi Everyone!

I posted a few weeks back about my plan to cycle up the West coast fishing as I go.  I've figured quite a few things out from fishwrecked and have a plan which goes as so..

Arrive in Perth on the 14 april and get my self together over a week and hopefully fish the swan and have a look about before starting north on the bicycle..

Because of logistics on the bike, the best way for me to try and catch some decent fish will be to stop for a few days in likely looking places.

These are what i thought...first a somewhere around Jurien before heading on to kalbarri to fish the Murchinson estuary and beach. Then up to steep point probably just for a look (as my water supply probably won't let me stay there for long) and then onto shark bay for some beach fishing. Then onto carnavon where i might try and work for a while..After that  i will check out Quobba before I take a while out in Exmouth as that seems like the place to be!!

After Exmouth onto Karratha possibly via Pilbara region, then obviously a stop at Port Headland and then onto Broome and thats where the plan starts to fizzle out..

It would be great if you guys could let me know if there are any 'must see places' that I have missed out! Of course i will be trying to fish many more place than i have mentioned but it would be good to know where i shouldn't miss.

And again i would be much indebted to anyone who wants to meet up along the way for a fish.

One last question; are the shimano t curve revolution travel rods available in Perth?

You can follow my trip at www.worldbiker.blogspot.com and i'll put some updates on fishwrecked when i can,

Hope to meet some of you guys in the coming months,

 All the best, Scott

Daiwa Phantom J 3500 - Light jig and soft plastics

Has anyone got any reports or opinions on how the Phantom J 3500 stands up when compared to the Daiwa Seagate 3500 and the Stradic 5000? It will be used with Pe3 to chase demersals with soft plastics and light jigs. I havent heard much about them but they dont look too bad for the money.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Brad

Team Daiwa Advantage 2500 - Schematics?

Hi guys,

Just servicing my reels and this is the first time I have done the above reel. Can anyone point me to a schematic or assembly guide in case I get stuck?

Cheers,

Buschy :-)

Tailor

Anyone been catching tailor up Moore River latley. Going up next weekend for a crack at em. Taking the tinny to have a stab at some light gear on the bream during the day with the kids too.

Eating river flathead

Does anyone no what a flathead around Mt henry bridge would taste like.

Thanks,

Andrew

Fishing rule query

Hi Guys.

The rules state you can have up to 3 hooks or gangs of hooks per line, correct????

Obviously this makes the 6 hook baitchaser rigs illegal in WA.I stopped using the 6 hook rigs a long time ago, only use the 3 hook type nowdays.

The rule doesnt clarify the number of hooks in a gang.Pretty sure 3 hooks and a treble is fine(I dont use trebles). Are 4 hook gangs actually legal? I prefer a smaller 4th hook rather than a treble. You can catch smaller fish plus the fish doesnt get mutilated like they do if they have swallowed a treble,a mulie presents better with the smaller 4th hook at the tail.

Would be good if I could get an answer reasonably quickly, down the shed making a variety of gang hooks at the moment ready to go fishing at easter.

Thanks

Andrew

Fisherman washed off rocks in Albany

Fears are held for a Woodvale teenager who was swept off rocks at a popular Albany fishing spot this morning.

A search is under way for the boy, who went missing just after 8am after he had been fishing off rocks at Salmon Holes.

The boy is understood to be a poor swimmer and to have been holidaying in the coastal city for the weekend.

Three search and rescue boats and a fixed-wing aircraft are searching the area.

A police dive team and helicopter are expected to arrive at the scene later today.

Albany Police officer-in-charge Mark Fairclough said the search was a "full-blown marine search rescue".

"At this point we have lost sight of the boy," Sgt Fairclough said.

Local fisherman John Hinds, who witnessed the incident and fishes at the spot most days, said bystanders threw buoys to the teenager from the rocks.

"The boy got too close to the waterline and slipped on the rocks," he said.

"After he fell in he bobbed around for about three minutes and then he disappeared."

Coral Bay Trip & BBQ

 Hi All,

Would like to share my very interesting trip to coral bay recently. A couple of mates & I fished CB for three days with a nice mixed bag of emperors & tried our luck for a marlin. Majority of the trip was dedicated to bottom bashing with a little bit of trolling between spots, we only trolled for a 4 -5 hrs for the whole trip and managed to raise 5 marlin, hooked three & got one to the boat as well as a nice little dolly. So needless to say we were pretty happy with our efforts as none of us had fished CB before and are keen to go back there and spend more time dragging skirts around.

Now this is where the trip got interesting, on the way back to home we were about 150klms south of Carnarvon when I noticed that there was smoke coming out from the rear of the car, we pulled over and found that there was diesel gushing from the rear of the engine and then as my mate said, that is least of your worries as it is on fire, SHIT, raced to the boat to get the fire extinguisher to find that it was missing, so grabbed all the water we had & tried to fight the fire with no success. Time to make the call, get what possessions we could out of the car & get the boat off before we had more dramas on our hands. So to cut a really long story short a 12hr trip turned into 21hr journey of hitching rides in road trains & people that just wanted to help.

I must thank the two guys that pulled up to give us hand & tow my boat to Wooramel roadhouse after unhitching their boat & doing a 90klm round trip.

Want to improve your casting distances and accuracy?

Sunday 3 April

Want to improve your casting distances and accuracy?

Can you cast over 100 metres? You can do it easily with help from us. We had a junior who set casting records of 100 metres for 112 gram, and 97 metres for 56 gram when he was only 12. And he was not big for his age. Some adults regularly cast over 150 metres.

People who would like to see how it is possible to cast such long distances, how to cast accurately, and get some tips and tutition can come to the Surf Casting and Angling Club's dry casting day on Sunday 3 April.

Where:- Yokine Reserve, Wordsworth Avenue, Yokine. Competition starts at 8:30am, but club members are there from around 7:30am onwards for setup and practice.

Dry Casting is long distance casting and accuracy casting on a grassed area, where the distances and the accuracy can be measured.

We've all met the difficult situations where the water is rough, the wind is strong in your face or coming from one side, you need to land the sinker in a sand hole near reefs, cast a bait in front of a school of fish, avoid tangling with the person next to you, the person next to you is casting a bit further and catching all the fish, and so on. With the right gear and skills, you can fish almost anywhere and in almost any conditions.

You don't need any special gear to start dry casting. Many people use their regular fishing gear, particularly for the accuracy casting.

We can show you how to get the best out of your own fishing gear if you would like to bring it along. We can give advice on different rods and reels and show how these can go together, and also let you try out casting with different rod and reel combinations to find one that suits your fishing needs and your size and physical strength. This is important for the ladies and juniors, and those of us who aren't as young as we used to be, or for people who are struggling to cast the distances they want to.

Our visitors always get a lot of useful and practical tips, and often add 10 to 30 metres to their casts on the first day - and, no, we don't catch many fish at drycasting, but those skills certainly help when we go fishing.

After the competition and the lessons for the visitors, we get together over a sausage sizzle and soft drinks, and talk about anything to do with fishing and casting.

The Club has an airconditioned house in Kalbarri available for rent to public and members. Club members get a big discount on rates paid by the public. http://www.surfcasters.iinet.net.au/KalbarriHouseMain.html

Mackeral tips.

Hey all.

Ive been meaning to go for a troll all summer but never found the time so i think im to late but just wondering what lb leader i should be running to my wire?

Also which knot is the best for this, ive tryed the albright but its to bulky to go through the guides. Ive got a TLD 20  and a TLD 25 both with 30lb mono for trolling and two boxes of halcos 190dd, 160d, and a couple of 190xdd. Should i run a Xdd and a normal dd? or the shallower ones and a deep??

Ive heard that there is still mackies hanging around but how long do you guys expect them to hang around for? I will be trolling for them out from ocean reef around the 3mile. I read that 27m is a good starting point but what is a good range for mackies to be in?

With the halco lures does anyone change the standard trebles off their lures?

Whats the ideal trolling speed for them also? is 8knots a good speed?

Cheers Danno.

These are the lures i have.

Exy report

Looking forward to a few reports from Exmouth during the F/W comp. As one of the folks that cant make it this year, we are hoping that the 'budding journos' up there will keep us up to speed with how it's all going.

Good luck to all attending, if you dont live there then have a safe journey there & back & i hope the weather gods are good to ya.   Good luck.

cheers Rob
