boaty warning for woddys ramp

just a heads up..i was heading in the other night back to woddys ramp and just as i got to the concrete jetty, the one u turn just before seeing the ramps..a couple of fellas called me over and asked if i could back up my boat with there crab net to unsnag it..i helped them out and got there net unsnagged but in the mean time my prop picked another rope up,at the same time as we were pulling the guys net up it snagged another net..i got the prop cleared and the nets out but when we came in close with the spotty we could see about 20 loose rope ends where people have got there nets snagged and cut the ropes just above the water line..

my advice if coming or going from woddys ramp is stay well clear of the corner to save alot of hassle..

Beach Access

Hey Guys

What beaches can you drive on between Augusta and Yallingup?

I know of Hamelin Bay, and how to get there - is Boranup a different beach? I was on Hamelin years ago but didn't go to far.  Looking on the maps its the next one up but have to take a different track in?

Is there any others?

Thanks

New found love of fishing

Hi guys.

Im new to the site and am loving reading all the info and chatter that goes on here. I just purchased a small (13ft) tinny and have been getting out as much as possible. Yet to really bag anything of note but have fallen in love with the whole experience.

I had a great crabbing session down cockburn sound way on a crabbing run a few weeks back but thats about all. Hit up the swan yesterday around garret rd bridge and finally caught a couple of bream, nothing of size sadly. Best catch of the day was a few blueys off the line which was a surprise.

Im keen to find some areas where i can get out in a tinny and actually catch something rather than feeding the bastards, which has been the case for the last month or so. Not looking for anyone secret spots or anything, just help to point me in the right direction so i can enhance my love of being on the water.

Cheers

Trolling for Spanairds

Deep Sea Dory

A major and International fast food chain has recently advertised "DEEP SEA DORY" as the fillet in a "burger"

I have never heard of the fish, the only DORY I am aware of in Oz are the JOHN and the MIRROR, none on which would provide the fillets necessary to sell the amount of burgers that this company would be trying to sell to make  money

Is there such a fish and can they provide enough meat to sell the burgers of a fast food chain, or are they on the con ?

a BIG home aquarium

Jack Heathcote, 37, has converted the basement cellar of his five bedroom house in Nottingham into Britain's biggest domestic aquarium, creating a private underwater world filled with exotic species usually only seen in the Amazon and Congo.

The tropical haven, complete with viewing window, is 3.8m x 3.9m x 2.1m.

It is so large, arguably the largest privately owned aquarium in Britain, that Jack has to dive in himself once a fortnight to clean it.

The tank is accessed via a hole in the living room of Mr Heathcote's five-bedroom home

The tank is accessed via a hole in the living room of Mr Heathcote's home.  Three of the walls of the tank are the foundation walls of the house and a large section of floor was removed by the bay window to allow access. Downstairs a wall of glass has replaced the brick wall, and behind it are some of the largest fish kept in captivity.

JACK'S TANK BY NUMBERS

.  Measures 3.8m x 3.9m x 2.1m

.  Contains 21,821 litres of water.

.  Cost Aud$7,800 for tank, $1092 for glass, $1248 for fibreglass lining and very high electricity bills.

.  Holds two chainsaw doradids, three .6m long Pacus, Pangasius, a Redtail hybrid catfish, two alligator gars, eight enormous stringrays and two Fly River turtles.

.  It takes 30 minutes to feed them.

.  They will soon be joined by two silver arowanas which are more commonly found in the Amazon River Basin.

'I had to do some pretty accurate calculations, especially when you consider the amount of water behind the glass,' Jack said.

'When it's full there's around 21,821 litres of (metred) water in the tank.   Each water change sees up to 5455 litres gallons being taken out and then replaced and even with my high pressure hose, it takes six hours to re-fill.'

Jack paid Aud$1092 for the glass panels and $1248 for the fibreglass lining, adding that the tank cost him $7,800 in total to build. He has also stuck to simple decoration in the tank, which includes large, smooth boulders along with the branches of a damson tree which he chopped in half.

The tank is an L-shape from front to back, meaning that the space immediately behind the bay window is 2.1m deep, while the rest of the floor space is subdivided by a ledge that used to be the foundation for the window.

Jack claims that he first became interested in sea life when he was 10 years old after a visit to a Blackpool aquarium

'There's obviously a bit of work cleaning the tank and changing the water. Then there's feeding the fish, but that only takes about 30 minutes every two or three days. They eat anything from trout to mussels.

'It does cost a bit for the upkeep, and most people would not want to see my electricity bill, but I make some money selling some of the fish I breed.

'There's too much red tape to even consider opening up to the public, but to have the UK's biggest private aquarium, is something I am very proud of.'

Jack said that he does not own a TV in his Nottingham home as he watches the fish tank instead

Jack admitted that in the event of any future house moves, he would probably drain the tank and sell it as a wet room, but at the moment he has no plans to sell up.  There's also a couple of other smaller tanks down in the cellar and some breeding tanks out in the shed at the back.

Shimano Stradic

Looking at replacing my old (now broken) baitrunner 4500. Don't really need the baitrunner part but would like a nice reel for various uses and using 6/8kg mono or 15/20 pound braid. Had a look at a few and like the Stradic 8000 for comfort and price.

Anyone have any ideas on similar reels and maybe some prices? Best price I have seen so far is $249 for the Stradic 8000.

Eco-Tourism

Just heard someone from Curtin University on ABC News state that Eco-tourists spend twice as much than other tourists and thats why there needs to be Sanctuary Zones in the Southwest. His refference is the research done on the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park where the tourists like to dive with the whale sharks at an exorbitant cost. Down here we have the White pointer sharks and any time they want to free dive with them they are more than welcome just be sure to make out your will beforehand. Gee you hear some rubbish coming out of Curtin Uni.

Mackies saved by floating weed

Sounds like all the floating weed out from the metro area is the only thing saving these mackies at the moment with the amount of people targetting them. We had a big mack free jumping chasing gardies 150m behind the ski on sunday while we were fishing for tailor so out went the richter plug landing within 2m of the fish severa; times but no luck. Trolled some rapalas for a couple mins but the weed was just too much so headed back to the reef to pop some tailor.

Ended up with 7 tailor ranging from 45cms up to 53cms caught all on richter plugs. The weed was so bad it clogged up the intake grate on the ski and was tangled around the prop so max speed was about 3knots. Had to jump in a couple times and stick my hand in there to get it out, was a nightmare. The bay holding most of the tailor was also fulll of weed so was pretty hard work, taking around 4hrs just to land the 7fish.

Who elses lures were plagued by weed over the weekend??

Rods Found on Forest Highway

Gday All,

My folks found 4 fishing rods in a fabric bag a few weeks ago on the side of the road in the northbound lanes of the Forest Highway between Mandurah and Bunbury. Just rods no reels or tackle or anything. Some minor damage but easily repairable. Trying to find the owners as I'm sure someone misses them. If you or someone you know lost some rods please reply here or PM me. Obviously you will need a detailed description to identify yourself as the owner. Hopefully I can find the owners.

Cheers Ozz

Fitzroy Barra Tagging

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of any barra tagging and research programs for the Fitzroy river ?

I release all the barra i catch and wouldnt mind getting involved in tagging some fish and doing my bit for the future of the fishery.

Thanks

Automatic berley dispenser.

I've been wondering why we've been having a lot of action around the end of the Busselton jetty and I just received a phone call that when you go into the Underwater Observatory you can see berley being dispensed into the water to keep the fish hanging around. Not a very natural experience for the punters and from a group who claim to care about the marine environment. I hope the nutrients that are entering the system don't produce algal blooms and stuff up our fishing.

Fishing esperance

Casting a Charter Special

Has anyone on here had any experience in trying to cast a charter special?

i've had a brand new one sitting around for a few years without any use since i sold my boat and i figured i would give it a run down south next week either ballooning or live baiting from the rocks. I'm fairly good at casting overheads and have several Abu's so i'm confident in my technique however i would like to hear of someone elses experiences with these reels.

Cheers Richo

Brickie needed for a cashie

Hi, I am after a brickie for a weekends work.

I want a facebrick feature wall built for my pool waterfall(about 3m x 1,5 high), and a facebrick featurewall for my BBQ area(2,5m x 1,8m high), as well as a short outside counter for my fridge and sink unit.

I have ordered the bricks - arrive next Monday - and looking for someone to build this within the next few weeks?

Anyone interested or have a refereal for a mate to do this for me out in Safety bay?

The work can be done anytime, as the area is available now.

Thanks

Saragosa, Twinpower vs Stella

Now I am straight out a ruogh fisho, wash the gear down but a rod and reel is for fishing and not babying IMO. Hooked a Marlin between end of Enderby heading to Bare rock amonst a school of Northern Bluefin clearly visible as they breached. Pushed out a long soft oscar and a pink grassy (smallish) and hooked something on the oscar, Bent the rod but nothing to get to excited about, then the small grassy went balastic, and I jumped on the rod.

Law and behold a largeish black above 100kg IMO jumped clear. Now it was a solo trip, and I could get the two other rigs with slices rigged on the baitboard rod holders out of the way and my heartland saragosa 5000 got clearly knocked off and into the drink. Bloody bugger.

Still solo fought the marlin and as he violently shook I managed to grab the grassy and then as it was boatside thought "capture" and cut the line.

Now to replace the combo, since I am rough, I cant see the value in the Stella, which you have to baby, heartlands is about 200 more than saras, which I have owned 6 and love them, but is it worth spending that little extra on the Twinpower?

Just asking!

Sea sickness pills which work for me.

Hi all sea sickness sufferers.

Since I was a kid I always struggled with travel sickness. I eventually grew out of getting sick in a car, but out on the sea I still get sick. And that’s full on sick, going on a charter was pretty much waste of money, because within an hour I was throwing burley overboard. I got invited on a fishing trip this weekend, I was bit worried but keen. Well, cut the story short, I remembered that there was a drug called Kinedryl which I was given by my parents so I don’t get sick in the car and I found few pills in my little pharmacy I took with me when I came over here. It worked a tread. One pill when I woke up, one after some 2 hours and one about midday. May be one too much but I wanted to be sure. I enjoyed trip to Roto and back, fishing and so without any kind of feeling sick.

Kinedryl  is bit hard to get here, so far I’ve found just one online pharmacy which could ship it here. http://www.docsimon.com/article/kinedryl-tbl-10 The shipping cost is bit of a killer, but not too bad, when it makes a difference between getting sick and not.

There is probably few other products around, but most of them on prescription or those ginger tablets. But they don’t work for me, because nothing can’t settle the stomach when your inner ear is messed up.

Hope this will help to someone.

Hillarys help

Hi All

Just wanted some quick tips if possible. Mate of mine just bought a new tub. (Caribbean Belmont 17 foot with 115hp)

We took it out for his first run yesterday and stayed in pretty close 13-15m of water. Just to test it out. Few little pickers around and landed a couple rays but not alot else. Nice day out all the same and although it was pretty flat the Mrs got a bit seasick so we headed back after a couple hours.

Just wanting to know what depths are best for Dhuies, Snapper, KGs etc out of Hillarys?

Baits and rigs. We have some Mcarthys that we will give a crack also but what favourite baits are best?

And also trolling speeds for Macs and Tuna?

(don't want specific spots as we want to plot our own marks and see if we can improve our fish finding/sounding skills ourselves) More rewarding I reckon!

Cheers
