1977 140 evinrude help
Submitted by fisho-ron on Mon, 2010-11-15 21:04yes i did the search, didnt find the answer im looking for(maybe there isnt one)
posting for a freind.
he has a 1977 140 evinrude that has exellent compression on all cyl, and when going, goes like a rocket.
it has got starting issuses, it seems to flood very easy and once flooded it wont go unless you use areo start or the like.
looking for a mechanic that knows the old engines to do a tune/repair?
he has had the carbs of twice by so called mechs to clean, as that was the problem?????? well its not dirty carbs we now know!
i belive its the float levels that are out but he has been told they are not ajustible, (they do have metal tabs to bend to set float levels)
but i am not a mech so i will eat my words.
anybody know of a good, old outboard mech around the welshpool area?

Submitted by J Déjà Vu on Mon, 2010-11-15 20:21ay fellas coming there next month fishing 2 days with shikari charters for sambos
im from SA and

now will this method be suitable for those big sambos
i have read on her bout all thes knots liek the pr and gt knot used for attachin braid to normal leader.
if i use this tecnique wil i be safe with those big sambos ? or should learn the methods you'se all use there ? if yes what are they etc

Hows this set up?
Submitted by stacer414 on Mon, 2010-11-15 18:04Im pretty new and just expanding my arsenal as you do. Ive been after something quite light for targeting bream, but also other light species whiting herring etc to have fun with, so i got my hands on a tierra 2500, but now im at a loss as to what rod to pair her up with. Hows a Pflueger Trion 2-4kg. In 6'6" or 7", whats the difference/benefits?
Is this set up any good?
cheers

The gear that you've loved and lost :(
Submitted by PattyT on Mon, 2010-11-15 17:04Yesterday morning I was snapper fishing out on PPB in Victoria. It was a little bumpy but the fishing was HOT!! 20 fish up to 4.5kg in 4 hours... However, my day took a turn for the worst when a run from a snapper perfectly coincided with the boat going up the swell.. as the rods were facing down towards the water the fish pulled my Daiwa Certate 3500HD with custom RCS spool and matching Daiwa Sol rod straight out of the rod holder and into the plonk.. never to be seen again. Too say I am shattered is an understatement. The drag was loose (maybe not loose enough :@) and I was fishing a snapper snatcher straight under the boat so I'm still a little confused as to how it all happened. God I loved that reel!! But atleast it didnt get stolen as a mate and me discussed on the way home...
Anyways, i'm interested to hear of any hard luck stories you guys have had in losing gear that you've loved.. Hopefully it will make me feel a little better. haha

like minded tinny fishos
Submitted by brenz on Mon, 2010-11-15 13:30just a shout out to the tinny fishos that may be interested in some convoy missions . looking for a few other tinny owners that may be interested in doing some night time trips for snapper sharks etc as its always better to travel in twos for safety reasons. i have the spots as ive been doing it for years all i ask is you dont hand the spots out to every one as these spots are very accesable and loaded with fish that i never see any one else fish . obviously wont be starting up again till dec 15 .also have a shack at wedge that i will be doing some weekend trips to wich your more than welcome to come along (no need for 4wd as i beach launch with a falcoon) shoot us a pm if your interested

Understanding Crays
Submitted by wayneleech on Sun, 2010-11-14 20:08Hey fellas,
I was hoping to get some feedback on crays and their life cylce - eg, how they breed/migrate.
I thought that crays mainly stayed out in the depths (eg, during winter) then during the season they migrate into the shallows to breed, and then at the end of the season they return to depths.
However after reading one of Paul's posts he mentioned that they start off in close then move out?
Also - what the difference between the whites vs reds? Is a white just a cray that has shed its shell? And why do the whites have a run during the season - eg, when they load up on the back of the three mile before moving out?
Hopefully once I know a little more about their life cycle this will help when targeting them this season:)
cheers

Fishing myths
Submitted by JR JetSki on Sun, 2010-11-14 19:38Saw the picture of the snake like thing taking Adams bait and some comment on "cut the line". Back in South Africa we often hooked up with eels and the myth was to cut of all the line of that was in contact with the eel as no other fish would bite on that rig again. The eel tangles it up so badly that you kind of have to cut the line, no use of trying to untangle the mess.
What other myths do you know about?

Yes, I finally got a boat!
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2010-11-14 18:53So we finally decided it was time to join the boat club and get our first family boat (had a small one before the kids came along but have been without for 3 years now). The requirements were that it HAD to fit in the garage, had to have a cabin and shade for the girls, and had to have atleast enough room to fish 2 people. After looking around one of the only (if not the only) boat I could find with a cabin that would fit under the garage door was the Quicksilver Dominator 510. Did all the measurements and checked out the boat and after being confident it would fit (after having the trailer rollers lowered and flipping the jockey wheel up and dropping the front of the trailer down to get it under the door) we made the purchase! It's an 08 package with the 60 4stroke having done only 7 hours so basically new.
Picked it up on thursday and had to wait till sat morning to put it in the water for it's first run. Somehow we managed to get the family together and loaded up by 5:30am and we were on the water not long after 6am. Gotta love starting the motor up for the first time and motoring out of the point peron ramp. It was howling wind but we had a fun 2 hours catching a few squid and inking the new boat up before having to head home early due to kids party we had on mid morning. Didn't really get to test the boats capabilities out as we didn't go far but we were very happy with it's family suitability. A great compromise between family and fishing.
Also headed back out with a mate this morning and got to bounce through some of that easterly slop out from garden island and thought it handled great so feeling confident already that with some good weather I'll be out deep when the ban ends! Got onto some squid and a feed of whiting for dinner so another successful day. Still deciding on a name for the boat but if you see me out there say hi!

How to humanely dispatch a squid.
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2010-11-14 18:51Hey guys.
I was asked a while ago how you use one of the iki jim spikes one squid so today i thought that i would show you. I took pics today so you know what im talking about. The main reason that you dispatch the squid is so that the tube doesnt tighten up so its in the best eating condition when you get around to clean it.
1). There is a lump on the squids head inbetween the eyes, put the spike there and push down. The head should turn white you know you've killed that part.
2). You then push the spike down one of the sides of the squid, if you look on the pics you can see where i mean. Half of the hood will turn white.
3). Then push the spike into the other side and it will turn white as well.
Then your left with a white squid that is in great condition to eat. One word of warning though is that it will release all of its ink every where. So what i do is do it in a spare bucket or container till all the ink is gone then into a bucket of water.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Danno

Big bream - how to put the brakes on?
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2010-11-14 17:27Hi guys,
I think the thread title is pretty self explanatory. For those who regularly chase big bream what size /brand of mainlines / leaders are you using?
I found a spot that is holding some very decent fish in a river somewhere. I had numerous bust offs on 8lb leader and 4lb fireline as a mainline.
Cheers,
Buschy

Shimano Sephia Egixile squid jigs.
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2010-11-14 16:27Hey all
As most of you know i like to buy new jigs:) its an addiction i swear.
One jig that is sort of new to the market is the shimano Egiexile sephia squid jig by shimano. Yesturday i went into tackleworld to visit brenz and pick up a few jigs:P
I bought 5 new jigs 2 of the white clear ones, a brown, a pink and a orange.
I started in close with the 3.0 white one near the cliffs, I got one squid there then got bored so moved out to nailed a bigger one on the brown 3.5. The squid was so agro that it bit holes in my new jig .
I only caught 2 squid on them 2day because i was trying to use all my other ones but i realy like their looks and the way the sit in the water.
So if your a mad squider like me add one of these (or 2 or 3 or more) to your arsonary.
Cheers Danno

Jurian - Cray / Crabs?
Submitted by tonyb on Sun, 2010-11-14 15:50Guys
Heading to Jurian mid week. Wondering where you would put your crays pots at this time of the year (depth etc)? Also, I heard the Marina up there holds crabs, would it be worth talking up crabs nets?
Thanks for any advise you can offer.
