What rod or reel would you ask for

With Xmas approaching quickly I was wondering what rod or reel you would ask your other half for if they said you could have what you wanted for Christmas.

I would be pretty wrapped to get:
* One of the new Shimano Twinpowers; or
* One of the new SOL 4000; or
* A Trinidad DC.

Not in any particular order.

All the best, Colin Hay

Maximum easterlies you go out wide?

Just wondering what strength winds you guys tend to go out in? For SW'ers, i'm guessing anything above 15kt is a bit too windy, but does the same thing apply with easterlies? From the shore it doesnt look like theres as much chop. Does it still get just as choppy far out regardless of direction, or is the wind strength and hence drift going to be the limiting factor? For SW'ers I can get a rough idea from the shore, but for easterlies its a little harder not having my own boat (......yet)

We'll assume theres not much swell, unlike the FW northern leg comp, lol.

Last night at Pinnarroo Point

After Blake T's reports of some good tailor and a few mulloway being caught down at Pinnaroo Point, Doug, Brendan and I decided to head down there last night to have a look. With predictions of a strong breeze to be blowing we arrived to find there was very little wind at all.
After getting a good hit and smallish tailor on my first cast, it was looking good. Doug soon had a nice herring on the beach before things went quiet for awhile.
Brendan and I put fillets of Doug's herring out, but things were still a bit quiet until the drag on my Shimano Big Baitrunner started screaming. It soon became obvious it was sizeable stingray which made snapped my 15 lb braid like a piece of cotton when I tried to stop it from heading to Two Rocks.
Soon after that Doug and I pulled in twin tailor of about 34 to 35 cm.
The action then went quiet again, with the fish being a bit timid with their bites. I managed to hook a small Port Jackson shark, but that was it for the night.
All in all it was a very pleasant evening and we will be back, especially when a south wester is blowing.

The Dhuie CLassic fishing Comp

We are missing something and I think I know what it is. All the talk in the V5 threads has got me thinking, and in my reply to Allrounder I finally nailed it.

We don't need a ban, we need a fishing comp and some research. Question for all non game fishos.

WHat are the three biggest fishing comps in Australia

My guess would be

Flattie CLassic
Barra Classic
Barra Nationals

Teams from all over the country get together to target big flatties and barra. Now Barra are pretty glamorous, fight hard, look good and live in some of the nicest scenery on earth.

But Flatties are farken ugly, live in canals and fight like wet bags, but they get a couple of 100 boats each year lining up on the gold coast to try and catch them. They are tagged for research, and all released. And through this and a lot of media coverage no one keeps big breeding flatties, there population has gone through the roof and everyone gets a feed and is happy.

WHat is the goal of the Dhuie Classic.

To better educate all fishos about how valuable big females are, how to properly release them and to gather scientific data relating to location and status of our female fish population.

Your thoughts/Ideas. Am I on the right track.

SE Queenslanders love thier big flatties
Territorians are very protective of big Barra
We are the only place in the world that has Dhufish, we should feel the same way.

DUMB QUESTION.........i hope not please reply.

I was just wondering if theres anyway you can anchor offshore with the boat side ways? Now i know if it not dead calm or if theres swell this is dangerous but say for instance your casting at a target and want to utalize the whole length of your boat so two or three can easily cast at the same target? What im trying to say is set up like a drift but your always stationary.

any info would be appreciated, ive thought of a few ways but it always comes back as it will either get in the way or dangerous.Cheers Chris.

Boat buying / repairs advice please

I am looking at trading up boat wise and have been looking on all the usual sites.  I have found a half cabin for sale which looks very nice and is in my price range.  However, the seller states in the ad that the timber in the transom needs repair.

Considering my DIY experience I would never consider taking something like this on but was wondering if anyone has had this done before and what sort of costs (ballpark) are involved.  It's a 4.75m fiberglass boat if that helps.

Any other advice on buying boats, where to look etc would be greatly appreciated.

Sam

Wooden vs Plastic

hi all,

Just in the process of buying some cray pots. I'm not sure on whether to purchase the wooden ones, or the plastic ones?

Does anyone have any advice? Are the wooden ones still light enough for recreational use?

cheers

Wayne

Polycraft Boats

I'm looking at changing my rig from a 5.5 mtr ali half cab to more of an alrounder for the pilbara and something I can handle by myself. Looking at the trailcraft profish (had one before) and I see polycraft do a range in the same configuration. If anyone has had any experiences good or bad with the polycraft range, would be great if you could give me the good oil.

Cheers Fozz

Buying Local or Over the Net?

Hey Gang!

Im wanting to buy a new saragosa 18000 reel, so off i went today to the local tackle shop here in karratha. I had already saw the price of 389 of the internet, so i wanted to try keep my money local and see what price they could do for me.

They had one in stock, loaded with braid (not sure what type/lb) for 538 i think from memeroy. The best they could do was 450, without braid. I going to have a look tomorrow at the new tackle shop here, and check on their price.

Whats everyones thoughts on keeping money local vs saving money?

Fin-Nor Offshore 9500 pic

I was looking for an egg beater type reel which could fit more line than my Penn 9500ss, and I found it.
Fin Nor Offshore
4.41 gear ratio
Mono cap (yds/lbs)
400/25
375/30
Braid -600/100
I spooled them up with Platinum 30lbs which is 0.45mm and the whole 500m has fitted onto the reel. (Filled right to the top)
Slightly bigger and heavier than a Penn 9500ss but holds more line. A good quality reel at a good price. They cost me around $200 dollars ea to be sent over from Melton Tackle, but I'm not sure if they're still selling them. Just do a google search for them. I heard a rumour that a tackle store in Rockingham might have them, but don't know for sure.

Danny.

the less you fish, the more you buy.

hello all, was just talking to a buddy today about that i have just started fishing in perth the last couple of months

and also that all on this webby have been really kind and helpful in guiding me along the right path.

knowing that this guy have been fishing for at least half his life of 27yrs, seek his advice on some gears.

nothing outstanding other then "keep fishing as once u stop, u'll only start buying. its an addiction. worse then any drugs on the market"

was just wondering if anyone here stop fishing for a while but during that time of non fishing time never stop buying fishing gears?

and what happens to the gear?

Replacing Penn 850

I want to replace my old Penn 850 Spinfisher as it's nearing the end of it's time. I want a reel that is similar but better if you know what i mean. Something that can be used for med/heavy spinning and some offshore work, bottom bouncing etc.. not considering the newer models, or an overhead! Budget around $300.

Looking forward to hearing your reply's Smile

NEWS BLOG - Should there be a complete ban on fishing for dhufish?
Research has revealed the pressure on WA’s declining fish stocks, including dhufish.

UWA research fellow Jessica Meeuwig said sites that would traditionally have had many dhufish now had few.

“We were certainly surprised by how very, very few West Australian dhufish we’ve got,” Dr Meeuwig said.

“The thing that is a bit scary about it is we tended to see smaller individuals, so those really big breeders, what they call the big, old fat fecund females, we’re not seeing very many of them.

“They’re the engine room and the fact that we’re not seeing them is worrying.”

In an attempt to protect WA’s fish stocks, the University of WA research has put renewed pressure on Fisheries Minister Norman Moore to enforce immediately seasonal fishing bans on species such as dhufish.

Wilderness Society marine co-ordinator Jill StJohn, co-author of a department research paper used by the Labor government to propose summer bans on high-risk species, said the UWA research was further evidence that dhufish were no longer common in west coast waters.

She has warned that species like dhufish might not have the resilience to bounce back if they are fished heavily this summer.

Do you think there should be a complete ban on fishing for dhufish in WA?

Todays West Australian

Anyone see the article in todays west on page 11 calling for daily fishing licences. Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this matter
