measuring squid for the up coming comp
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sun, 2011-06-12 18:43hi guys
had a few questions on how the squid are going to be measured and goodz has supplied the following pics, i will get some more pics up soon as well.
as you can see clearly in the pic the measurement is to be taken to the longest part of the hood, without getting down to nity grittys this one would measure in at 37cm, we would have to take the measurements in half cm increments.
this is the prime example of hood lenght measurment, and 2 of the required pics, 1 more pic of goodz holding the squid and the entry is done(along with the id tag)
i know it seems to be alot of pics to enter but it is the only way of doing it online and for everybody to see for themselves, if you have an easier way please let us know.

Kayak Rescue
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sun, 2011-06-12 18:04I just saw something on the news about some kayakers getting rescued because they drifted more than a km off shore in pretty average conditions.
Now I was going to post this last night, but I watched Fishing Australia yesterday where they were marlin fishing from their kayak more than 2nm out from shore. During the footage it became squally, heavy rain etc etc - they had a 40ft game boat in support (to film). Whilst it was pretty cool to watch the few jumps it had (I didn't like the fact they had to tire it to almost death to get it anywhere near the yak safely), is promoting this type of activity to the general public a bad thing?

Thinking along the lines of dual axel, heavy duty springs and 15'' tyres.
My question is has any one done the same kind of thing with there trailcraft Ibeam trailer.

Personal Great Fun Fishing in WA
Submitted by avion on Sun, 2011-06-12 15:43Hi fisho and friends in the forum
I just returned home from australia about 1 week ago.
i would love to thank the friends i met at the tackle shops in WA and my ex school mate who are still studying in the uni there.
Fishing has been great as i'm not really a fussy fisherman. i just want the thrill of hooking up one at the end of the line.
day 1:
night fishing with my ex school mate, coogee jetty. Reached there about 10pm after a dinner over at my place with asian home cooked food i dish out for them. upon reaching the jetty there were 3 groups of anglers there on all 3 platforms so we just set up the lighter gear for some bait fish. just as we got enough of the bait, the 1st group bid farewell to us and told us to take over their spot as they were so lucky tonight.
We quickly set up our heavy gear and cast off the bait fish. time was slow and our bait was constantly being ripped off by the blue swimmer crabs, man they are all over the place, 10m/20m/even 40m out. Finally our last 2 baits, each of us use 1 while the other anglers in our group give up. so after the cast, all sat down and was talking about the rig i use, as they have never used this sort of rig before.
Half way thru my demo, we hear a loud screaming from the reel, we are looking at both corners where we have placed our rod. it was mine, shimano acceration 6000pg (with 20lbs braided) with ajn samurai 7ft rod and the rod was bending to a 7 shape as the fish took off while the rod is still on the rod stand. the 1 burst of run took close to 50m of line and i was losing line and if that continued, i will be running on dry soon. continuing to apply pressure and began to pump the fish back, the motion was coming in and dashing out again, it just refuse to give up and we all know that it is a big one on the end of the line as they've never seen this rod bend till that shape. After 45min or so of reeling and sweating in the cold night, we saw a big white shape surfacing from the dark water. Everyone shouted "Sting Ray" and it was half the size of a dining table. Est weight to be close to 30kg. And this is one big ray i landed from shore casting after so many years. (not so much luck in asia as max go up to abt 10kg for personal record). That ended the night well with tired hands and shaky legs. :)
day 2-5:
night fishing with a twist, instead of fishing we went for squid as one of my tackle shop buddies took me on a couple of nights of squid hunting from cuttlefish to greeneye to arrow. we had great fun getting them on our ultra light set up, (size 500-1500 reels and ajn stealth carbon rods"rating 0.4-1.5") as food (aka snacks) and as bait for mulloway. Was told by him that winter is the season for them as they come in and spawn. on avg we hit abt 5-8 and called it a night, that we have what we need and we wont go for more. At least we leave some to fight another day
I would say, the cuttlefish are the biggest i caught so far, weighing in at about 1.5kg.
final day:
it was an off day for my tackle shop buddy, so we were thinking of maxing out the ultra light carbon rods that i brought over. So we headed down to mandurah for some fast and furious skippy action. Reached the place but we missed the time so had to wait for another 3-4hrs before the flow started again. And when it started, we were hitting skippy but landing them is not easy on the rocky area. hit and misses as they really play hard and dirty, dashing in and out and into underground rocks, cutting our leader as we are using very light poundage leader for max fun. Finally we managed to bring up some and take photos and only took back 3 pcs.

Soft Plastics Rod - What's good?
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Sun, 2011-06-12 11:11I've been in the market for a soft plastics rod for a while now. Still unsure what to buy.
Here's some info on the type of application it needs to be suited to:
south: snapper/dhu/baldies & occassional rat; north: tuna, queenies, reefies etc
2500/3000/4000 sized reel (certate/stella)
Line: pe1.5 - pe2
Length: min. 6'6"; max 7'
Jig weight: 0.5oz - 1.5oz
I currently use a daiwa saltwater 7' which I find quite ordinary (I've actually been using a light pe2 jig rod to better effect)
I've also looked at some gloomis rods, but they didn't really stand out.
I'd appreciate some suggestions. Budget: up to $500

Girls thinking about going fishing today
Submitted by Helen on Sun, 2011-06-12 10:12Hi people. My friend Trudy just got a fishing rod for her 25 birthday (Classic) and all she wants to do now is go fishing. I just got woken up after a big night out to a message begging to go today. I am not much of a land based fishing guru as i have only really done deep sea fishing, so can anyone tell me if today would be a good day to go, and if so a place you can recommend? This could be dangerous. and I am sure it will be a pretty good laugh. Just not sure i feel like getting out of bed just yet.

padding on the side of your deck!
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2011-06-11 20:04i have noticed on alot of the newer boats they have padded sections on the side deck for where you would lean when fishing.
has any one done this to an older boat? is it as good as it looks or is it all about the wank factor?
i am thinking of getting it done on my boat, leaning against the side for most of the day, i would think some padding would be nice, or it could be im getting to old??
on the down side it would involve more cleaning, but then i would just have to train the fellow fisho's and myself to keep there bait away as much as poss.
would love to see some pics from those who have it or had it done!

finally got my new toy
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2011-06-11 19:55hey guys
after a couple of months of saving i finally got my new toy(hds8) to go along with my hds10, got the cable so they talk to each other and share all info.
they are both combo's, so i have 2xgps & 2x sounders, i had a gps fail on me at night once so i like the idea of a back-up, a little bit more saving to buy another gold card because they will not share the one card, yer i know you dont need it but why not??? better than taking it out and putting it in the other.
because im running a 600w wet box and a 600w transom mount i will try them out and see if the hull of the boat makes a differance?, its going to be alot better than my old navman 6600 and having to manualy transfer waypoints.
now to find some fish for the comp...ha ha ha ha, might need a couple more units for that!!
cheers ron

Broome- Just arrived
Submitted by shortie78 on Fri, 2011-06-10 16:461st time poster, long time reader-
usually do my homework before arriving in town but short notice. Travelling the west coast fishing my way around, just came from an insane month in exmouth
Have a 3.75m Quinne, 4wd and will fish anywhere but know nothing about broome and madly searching.
Don't usually hook this site as I find my way myself but sick of listening to people who give bum steers as I have spent countless travel or fishing hours that are a waste
Can anyone help- Mad keen Mackerel on traul, like to get some nice bottom fish and have read enough about shore based so far to work out some good fish on plastics, lures, poppers
Someone said Barred creek good for Macks and traul not far out. drove up there today and looks like can get a dinghy either side of high tide.
If anyone can assist with info either:
Post here, Email me, catch up for a beer, Want to come out in the dingy, Got a spot in their rig
unfortunately no sounder atm, bought dinghy spur of the moment- (My name is grant, 32 and a fishing addict- I admit)
I am in town for months, I don't rape (took some locals out in exmouth last outing, caught over 100 fish and kept 1 spanglie), I just don't know the boating, tides, safety and most of all- where the fish are- so won't kill ur spots or secrets
Any help or catch up would be great
Cheers

Work Wanted
Submitted by buschy on Fri, 2011-06-10 15:53Hi all,
Hope this is not stepping on any toes. I am searching for employment and just thought this may be another avenue to help me find something.
I am happy to undertake any type of work. Up until recently I was running my own gardening business and have also been labouring for Commodore Marine (reference available). Prior to that my employment was professional (Project Management) however I also have extensive experience in customer service and team management.
I am ideally seeking work in the marine environment - however happy to give anything a go if it means keeping a roof over my 11 month old's head. If you need a labourer, TA or extra pair of hands please consider me.
I am hardworking, determined, sensible and have great communication skills (both written and verbal). I have reliable transport and while located SOR am happy to travel for opportunities.
CV and references available on request.
Thanks and regards,

Lure Prices
Submitted by longhairedlout on Fri, 2011-06-10 08:15g'day all,
just a quick question for all the people in the know with the tackle trade.
Is there any particular reason i can buy rapala, yo-zuri etc lures on-line from the states for virtually half price of what i'm asked to pay in tackle shops around perth ??? A good example is the yo-zuri hyrdo magnum's, i have seen them retail for up to forty dollars here, yet online from the US is less than half of that ???
I'm always keen to support local boys and keep my money is australia.... but with the Aussie dollar having it over the US greenback.... can anybody shed some light on why we are asked to pay so much for these lures?
Cheers guys.

im starting to organise our 2 and a half week trip starting late july and finishing mid august.
Ive never been up to exxy so this is a first. With the research ive been doing i hope the southerly winds dont come into affect till september like they say!
Firstly need some advice on fishing the area's generally?what to expect around that time of year?Fishing the gulf? Fishing the west side?
i know its seriously some one what out of a season, but i plan to do a bit of billfish trollling out wide. I plan to get a nautical map and start studying all the areas soon enough
Have a 6.2m Pro Line 21 Walk around to play with up there......
Any one recommend their favourite lures to exxy pacifically.
any advice would be good as i have never been there to this date
