Let the buyer beware...
Submitted by r.gates on Sat, 2011-06-18 16:13Hi all
I'd like to share with you a recent experience I had when I responded to an advert for a rod and reel that was for sale. As advertised, the rod and reel were 'near new' and described as being in good condition.
After contacting the seller and agreeing on a price for the rod and reel, I arranged for a 3rd party to pay for and pick up the items....only because the items were in Perth and I live south of Mandurah. My 3rd party picked up the rod and reel, put them in their car and left them in the corner of their lounge room for 2 weeks.....then I ventured up to Perth and collected them.
When I got to Perth I gave them both the 'once over', that's when i noticed the top 2 eyelets on the rod were misaligned in relation to the rest of the eyelets....hmmm. On closer inspection, the top section of the rod between the 2nd and 3rd eyelet could be twisted so the top 2 eyelets would indeed line up again with the others....damn.
I spoke to the seller, and they assure me that everything was ok with the rod.....my 3rd party assures me that it wasn't dropped, stepped on, slammed in the car door or knocked over.
Anyway, I took it back to the shop where it was originally purchased and they got their rod builder to cast an eye over it...the verdict being that the rod blank had been subjected to some sort of 'trauma' between the 2nd and 3rd eyelet, resulting in you being able to twist it....not a good thing.
As the rod is now junk, it will probably spend its days in the corner of my shed, alongside a couple of other 'dead' rods.
This post is not to cast any doubt on the integrity of the seller or anyone else, as I have no proof of how/when/what actually happened to the rod, but rather to point out the fact that when we buy second hand, we need to do our own checks on whatever it is we are buying. I'm not really out of pocket because I still have the reel, but the moral of this story is that in future, I'll be taking responsibility for doing my own inspections/tests on whatever I buy.
Although I haven't yet used the reel, it looks ok and I'm pretty keen to put it thru its paces.
regards
rusty...
PS. Before you ask, I'd rather not name the seller, ok.

Oversize Boats and Trailers
Submitted by GT POPPER on Sat, 2011-06-18 10:40Ive had a few questions fired at me regarding my trophy 2103cc, it seems that a few guys are put off the idea of buying one of these due to the beam being slightly oversize (50mm ish) and this raises issues re towing legalities etc etc, I understand that its not the boat that determines the width restrictions (oversize)...its actually the trailer..
Is this correct?...

Freo/Swan boat fishing
Submitted by Mitch Keys on Fri, 2011-06-17 22:43Hey guys, im new to perth. My friend has a small 14ft firberglass boat and is willing to give fishing around the perth metro area a crack. Hoping to get onto a few squid, herring, gardies, bream and the likes. Any infomation on some good spots to try would be greatly appreciated. I'm used to good fishing up North but im desperate to wet a line, and dont mind what i catch. Will just be for sport, most likely catch and release as i wouldnt eat anything that comes out of the swan anyway... Any advice would be great please fellas :)

deep water downrigger weight
Submitted by meglodon on Fri, 2011-06-17 22:35Hi all
Can anyone help me with a bit of advice about how heavy a weight you need to have to fish in 100 - 200 metres of water.
I'm making an electric downrigger for next summer, and as I have never fished in deep (100+) metres of water, what I intend to do is have a adiquate? weight on a downrigger to hold the bottom when fising deep with a clip on the weight so that if (when) I get a fish on I only need to pull the fish up as the downrigger weight will be winched up by an electric winch. If anyone could help me with a bit of experianced advice on how much weight you need to fish in 100 _ 200 metres of water at the back of rotto it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

LB options this weekend
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Fri, 2011-06-17 20:39Looking at the weather it seems we have large swells and onshore winds. All in all though I have this feeling that things could be worth a shot. I am toying with the idea of an overnight swag Saturday and a Sunday morning session on a good tide. My locale is north of 2-rocks. Anyone have any comments about my bizzar idea?

FW Jurien FADS project DONATIONS
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2011-06-17 17:15Hi Guys,
I've been speaking to Jamie (till) about getting the Jurien Fishwrecked FAD project going and its time to try and get some donations rolling in as it won't be long and it will be time to deploy (we all know how fast time flies when trying to organise these types of things).
If you would like to donate to this, either being able to assist Jamie in organising bits and pieces, knowing someone that may be able to donate chain/shackles or either cash donation, it will all help to get it all happening.
Please PM or email me if you are willing to help out.
Cheers,
Adam and Jamie

anyone know what these boat electronics are?
Submitted by Bill Chaser on Fri, 2011-06-17 16:36Ive just bought a new boat and am a bit confused as to what a couple of the electronics are....
PIC A+B: Im not sure what the small black plug like hole is in next to the switches...? it looks kind of like a cig lighter but it has a solid plastic column in the middle of it? Ive had a look at the cable behind it and it looks as though it has a fuse in the line if that helps?
PIC C: Not what this cradle is for? It looks like a GPS cradle with a lead that is meant to plug into something, but the boat already has a good humminbird and a furuno sounder on it.
Any ideas?? thanks in advance- I know its probably something pretty obvious but its got me stumped
thanks in advance!

Berkley Nitro Elevator Jig Heads
Submitted by ADDICT- dUFFMAN on Fri, 2011-06-17 15:58Hey Guys and Girls,
Just a question to anyone thats used the nitro elevator jig heads.
Are the hooks that come with both the 4oz and 2oz jigheads good enough for using with 7 inch Bullhead McArthys and 6" paddletails
The gape of the hook is quite small and so is the shank length. Do these factors effect hookup rates? and should i upgrade them to the bigger elevator hooks?
Cheers Duffman

Warroora Help
Submitted by milsey on Fri, 2011-06-17 14:38Hey all, I’m looking at heading up to Warroora, after a bit of reading it looks like a pretty special spot for more than just fishing, I’ve read all the old posts regarding Warroora and I was still unclear on a few things and was hoping to have a better idea before we head up.
First I was wondering what’s the biggest boat that could be launched with a 4x4, I was thinking launching our 21ft boat would be a huge effort and would result in digging. But if I only took the tinny might be restricted to fishing the shallows especially if the weather doesn’t play ball.
Secondly where is the best spot for camping? I’ve had a good look at the map and it seems there are plenty of spots to camp so I suppose I’m asking more which is better for fishing, launching and ease of camping.
Lastly not being that familiar with the northern weather patterns what are ideal wind and swell conditions? We will likely be staying in Jurien at a mates house and would only make the trip if the weather is looking favorable.
Thanks Miles

Bream in the Guildford area after the rain.
Submitted by RedPhin on Fri, 2011-06-17 12:36Bream have been going mental in the last 24 hours after the rains - they have been moving out of their holes and are on the prowl for interesting bits and pieces washed into the river by the rains. I've been targetting areas where they might find things of interest. Two hours last night, a bit of berley and peeled prawns for 3 in the 20 cm range, two in the 30cm range and once stonking big-boy who crossed the magic 40 cm mark. Just trying to organise a picture of him now.

Fishing Kalumburu
Submitted by alext on Fri, 2011-06-17 11:58Hey guys,
Firstly I'll introduce myself, My names Alex and I'm from Melbourne, into surf fishing for anything big or delicious, occasional trout fisherman but since I started regularly catching LB gummy sharks 2-3 years ago I hardly venture any near fresh water, I'm pretty much dedicated to fishing sharks LB around Westernport. Ive also recently made the trip over to Yalata on a bit of a surf-safari with some mates and had a great time.
Ok, So I'm heading up to Kalumburu in a couple weeks for work, can anyone spare some advice on a good charter boat (I realise they dont supply any tackle) Also, I'm hoping to fish after I knock of work, what are the LB options like up there?
Il be taking three outfits up with me:
*3-7kg spin outfit
*10-15kg spin stick
*40lb surf outfit
Taking a whole bunch of metal slugs, plastics, x-raps & poppers as well as the usual array of leades/sinkers/cirlce hooks.
Any help, hints, tips, advice etc to make my trip more enjoyable would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Alex
