how to read a fishfinder (sounder)
Submitted by fisherking on Tue, 2011-06-28 19:17Can anyone recommend a publication or web site that will teach me how to read/use a fishfinder correctly please?
I've got a Garmin 400c with instructions & I have no idea how to read it. It's a bit embarassing really, but I need help.
Maybe with this knowledge, i will finally catch me a fish or two.
Thanks in advance.
Dean.

Demon Blood Combi Jerk?
Submitted by symetre on Tue, 2011-06-28 08:11Gday,
Just after a few opinions on the Saltist Demon Blood Combi Jerk 64 rods. Im thinking of matching one to a Certate 4000 running 30lb braid.
This rod will be for general purpose bottom bashing, big plastics and throwing poppers at rat kings.
Any thoughts would be great.
Cheers.

A story to tell the grandkids
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-06-27 23:47Wiped out by a whale: Boy, 13, knocked unconscious after being hit by whale's tail
When 13-year-old Drew Hall set out on a fishing boat with his parents he didn't expect to end up in hospital after being knocked unconscious by a whale's tail.
The family had set out in their small boat from Brooms Head, in northern New South Wales, and spent a short time watching whales further out to sea blowing air from their blowholes.
As they cruised along looking for a better fishing spot a whale's tail suddenly emerged from the water and swept along the top of the boat from bow to stern.
'It all happened within seconds,' Drew's mother, Mrs Karen Hall, said today.
'I was sitting backwards in the boat looking at Drew and the tail just whacked him and sent him flying into the boat.'
She told the Daily Examiner newspaper that the tail smashed the windscreen on the boat's cabin and narrowly missed her. 'I thought Drew was dead. I looked at him and thought he was gone - he was blue. He was totally unconscious.'
She said it took about five minutes before she and her husband could get Drew to move but even when he did come round he was slipping in and out of consciousness as they sped the boat back to shore.
The teenager was met by paramedics and rushed to Maclean Hospital for treatment.
Powerful: The massive whale tail also smashed the windscreen of the boat's cabin
He had suffered a broken collarbone and also had a large lump on his chest and an egg-sized swelling on his head.
'He did manage to catch two rock cod before this happened,' Mrs Hall told the paper.
Drew doesn't remember anything of the incident.
What he does know now is that 'I got sent flying - I broke my collarbone and got knocked out for 30 or 40 minutes.' He told Channel 7 news: 'From there, I can't remember anything and then when we got to the boat ramp I remember the paramedics shining a light in my eye.
'I can remember seeing my brother and another person standing above me. 'Apparently I wasn't looking too good. I was really black and I wasn't really with it.' He said he was 'a bit sore - but I'm all right'.
He has vowed to go fishing again as soon as he can.
'Really, all I do is just fish and play cricket.'

Saltists?
Submitted by Braxi on Mon, 2011-06-27 22:48Hi, has anyone had much experience fishing with the Saltist spinning reels? Im looking at one for bottom bashing off Point Samson when my boat arrives from the states. New boat, need new gear. These look pretty sturdy and can hold a fair bit of line. And easy to use for visitors...

bag limits
Submitted by JIM1 on Mon, 2011-06-27 18:25in a highly unlikely case, jane doh has 100 herring in her freezer, caught over 4days, she then defrosts them and takes them with her fishing as her bait because shes clearly mad, mr fisheries stops her and questions her about this.
what on earth would happen to poor jane doh? would they take them, fillet them and see if they weighed over 20kg? would she need to provide proof she caught them over a bag limit period? would they go back to her house to make sures shes not a crazy cat lady?
in short, i want to start stocking up on bait instead of buying it, i imagine i would have say 20 herring max at any one time but always wondered what would happen if you got sprung with a large amout of bait.

Tips for Shore - Based Carnarvon
Submitted by Wazza79 on Mon, 2011-06-27 13:28G'Day Fellow Anglers,
I'm heading up to Carnarvon 11-15 July for a bit of work and hopefully a bit more fishing.
Any tips / spots that any of you would recommend for a bit of SP and HB Lure catch and release sessions? (Other than the jetty.)
Only going to take up a 3 -6kg outfit, so chasing Mullas off the jetty may be out of the question.
Cheers
Tight Lines!!

Thoughts on a medium spin combo
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2011-06-26 16:38G'Day guys,
Its only been a year or so since I had gotten into catching whiting, bream and flatty on light lures and poppers with my 2-4kg starlo stix tournament pro and 2500 stradic FI and have been swallowed by the bug and it now this is my most favourite type of fishing by a long shot.
A couple of weeks ago, I took it to the next level and went to a little reefy cove and caught little sweetlip, cod, stripeys and some kinda wrassey thing on the gear and had an absolute ball in the process. I was landbased on a reef edge and had real fun using this gear trying to stop those guys from busting me up on the reef. Landed 30-35 fish or so for the day using. I got smashed using 3inch berkley powerbaits and 3inch atomic jerk minnows.
When i upgraded to my 5inch Gulp crazy legs, I got smoked by a few unstopabbles which were realistically only "just" legal trout but was a real handful on the light gear.
So... Im after your thoughts on a medium spinning outfit to handle these fella's. Im chasing a rod thats either 3-6kg or 4-7kg but must be 1 piece and have a lure weight from 7 grams and up ( I used a 1/6ounce jighead - whats that in grams?). Im thinking either a 3-6kg midspin starlo stix tournament pro or a 4-7kg t-curve revolution inshore series (as the 3-6kg in this is a 2 piece). Im thinking of matching this up with either a stradic 3000Ci4 or stradic 4000Ci4. I wouldnt mind going the 4000Ci4 as it is 10g lighter than the 3000FI I have on my 2-4kg stick. Usually I would go a 3000 for this rod, but i think i could get away with a 4000 but only if its a Ci4 as its much lighter?
What do you guys recon I should do. Im open to suggestions
I should mention I will be looking at spending $500-$600
Thanks

Submitted by JGS on Sat, 2011-06-25 17:08Just a question. Is this a good time of year (weather permitting of course) to be fishing the ffb I remember reading an article suggesting there was pink snapper and sambos aggregating this time of year is there any truth to this or does it not really matter what the time of year is.
Looking to improve my hit rate and was just wondering how big of a role the seasons play.

Sundays weather?
Submitted by troy fuller on Sat, 2011-06-25 09:32Hey just want some of your opinions on this weekends weather, mostly sunday.
What do you guys think about the swell, almost up to 3m. I've always thought and still do think that even tho the swell is big, aslong as it's not too windy and the swell isn't close together it's usually a pretty awesome day.
I remember a few times the swell would be around 3-4 meters but no wind at all, the water had glassed off and we could go 40knts.
