Guys, I have to go to the Cocos Islands for a work trip in 2 weeks and will definately be packing some fishing gear. Anyone got experience fishing up there at this time of year? Will be fishing land based at this stage so looking at taking PE2 spinning gear with plastics / small popppers etc. Does anyone know if it is worth putting the GT gear in? I have read that the Jetty at night is a possible spot to target them. Is it possible to get bonefish without using Fly fishing gear? Any info would be great, will be up there for 4 days. Any been on a charter up there? Cheers, Matt

Monster croc shock MEAGAN DILLON | July 12th, 2011 NT News photographer Katrina Bridgeford took this picture of a massive crocodile during a cruise on the Adelaide River last week. YES, it's real. NT News photographer Katrina Bridgeford took this amazing front page photograph of Brutus, a 5.5m saltwater croc, giving a boatload of tourists a moment they'll never forget on the Adelaide River, just over 100km south of Darwin, last week. Ms Bridgeford was on the cruise with sons Jordan, 14, and Dylan Woodward, 11, of Sydney, NSW, four-year-old niece Skye Bridgeford and boyfriend Daniel Wilson. Son Dylan had only two words when the massive man eater rose out of the water in front of the group: "Holy crap!" We've seen the picture in the camera. It's real. Have you seen similar monster crocs in the Top End? The huge saltwater crocodile, which is missing its right front leg, is a favourite with tourists on the Adelaide River Cruises, because he loves his meal of buffalo meat and always puts on a good show for it. Jumping crocodile cruises are a major tourist attraction in the Territory with several operators providing their services along the croc-infested Adelaide River. But Brutus doesn't always get it his own way. Cruise operator Harry Bowman said the 80-year-old crocodile lost his front leg in a shark attack. It must have been a hell of a big shark.

Hi all went out on to SW bank on saturday got a few fish but what I saw when I put the boat on the trailer almost made me cry. It wasnt the calmest day Ive spent on the ocean but then again it wasnt the roughest day Ive been out. Heading out I sat on about 15knts and heading back into the easterlie I sat on10-12knts it was a long and slow trip out and and even longer trip back but at no time did I feel as though I had hit anything although being a alli boat u do get used to getting bashed around. But the damage that has been done I would of thought I would of felt it anyway heres the photos. I'm thinking I've hit a seal or dolphin but I kind of think a dolphin would be to smart to get hit by a boat going 10knts. Im just hopeing the insurance will fix it but also a little bit concerned about the strength of the fix I'm not a happy camper weather looks shed hot this sunday and my boat wont be touching the water. Does anyone know how this could be repaired properly? thnx

Went out this morning for a quick snapper bash before work at the same spot as i got last weeks fish. Had no luck all morning but thought i had found the Snapper motherload a couple time when these started showing up on my sounder. This is only the 3rd time ive used the sounder so still trying to get the hang of it, so just wondering what your opinions are and if your sounder lit up like this would you get excited or keep on driving? Only tried plastics on these schools with no hits coming from them. I thought most bait would be schooling closer to the top but thats what im putting it down to. Your thoughts?

Hi, I have bought a heap of stickbaits (yo zuri sashimi, xrap walk, saltiga dorado slider and tango dancers) for an upcoming exmouth trip. However, i am looking at changing out the trebles for singles. I know opinions are varied on this, but i am keen to give it a shot. My question is, what kind of single hooks should i be using?? At the moment i was thinking of either the Decoy Sergeant Jigging Singles or Owner Stinger singles. Also, what are everyones thoughts on how they should be rigged. I have seen some that have singles rigged back-to-back and also some that have assist hooks off the tow point. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

My time off work and family has been very precious of late thus why I never get much time off to go fishing. I did manage to get away with some mates to NZ for 2 days of fishing. We were blessed with the weather and also the fishing. Anyhow I got in touch with Mark Armistead of Extreme Fishing in NZ and the trip was booked. Met all the boys at Auckland airport and got a very comfy transfer to Tauranga where we checked in to the very comfy Sebel. Next morning we were greeted by a very sunny and still day and the water looking like a swimming pool. I was SOOO excited by this stage that I could not sit still . Anyhow after the buffet breakfast we headed to the hotel’s wharf where we met Mark and the skipper of the second boat – this was fishing in style.
So we split up over the 2 boats (3 in each) and headed out to the grounds. Oh I could not contain my excitement by this stage. We get out there and Mark shows us how to jig properly as one of my mates had never fished before and the other only a couple of times. He drops the jig over the side and after about 3 cranks he is in to a small kingie. Anyhow off we went and started jigging and not long after I was onto a fish. I thought he might have had a bit of size to him but turns out he was just a small fish (by local standards). It was great to see my two mates get stuck into some good kingies – our mate who had never been fishing opened up his account with an 80cm kingie – not a bad first fish!
The boys in the other boat got stuck into some good snapper on plastics and eventually came to join us on our ‘kingie reef’. I got a couple of decent kings that gave the 24kg gear and me a good workout. Our boat ended up with about 30 odd kings for the day and I managed the biggest at 119cm which meant I won the cash prize of $20 from each angler for the day.
That night we all had long hot showers, big meals and a few beers to dull the tired and aching muscles.
Next morning same deal, great weather, buffet brekkie and of to fish different grounds where we expected a lesser number of fish but bigger size. We tried to get some live baits in the harbour but no joy. We tried for a few small salmon on the way out but again, no joy. Bugger, we would have to rely on jigs again – oh my tired, sore, aching muscles. Anyhow we got out there and excitement took over and I forgot all about my muscles and got stuck into jigging again. Fish proved much harder to come by and we worked pretty hard all day to get into them. We got a few smaller fish then went to chase reds. On the light gear we hooked up to what we think may have been kings as they were unstoppable and we got busted off. We decided to try over some shallow reefs for reds and while the boys did that I was throwing around a stickbait for some kings. One of the highlights of the trip was seeing a big kingie come up from nowhere, try a few times to smash the stickbait then disappear. Amazing sight and I reckon my heart was beating at about 400 beats per minute, man it was awesome!!! Anyhow try as we might we could not raise him again.
The day was growing long, the sun was getting low but we didn’t give up. The other boat had gone back to chasing reds, we have moved into deeper water and kept looking for kings. It was hard work at the end of a long day to jig in 100-120m of water with 400gm jigs. I got blown away by two decent kings that were unstoppable on 65lb gear. One we put down to gear failure as we think a ‘couta we caught earlier may have nicked the line but the second one just sounded and I could not stop him on 65lb gear. Just as we were about to go we had ‘one last cast’ and I was on to something decent. The drag was screaming, I was screaming in a combination of pain and excitement and eventually managed to haul up the biggest king for the trip going 124cm. I was over the moon and when our skipper announced it over the radio to the other boat there was some rather colourful language across the airwaves. I had scooped the pool and picked up the $20 from each of them again and also had bragging rights. I ended up using the winning to pay for lost gear anyway.
What an awesome experience, we had perfect weather and most of all the fish decided to turn it on for us. Mark certainly knows his stuff and it was pleasure to fish with top of line gear. Now I know why people spend big bikkies on good gear – you need it when doing this sort of fishing. Anyhow, we had a great time with mates and many, many memories. I can’t wait to go back, I am trying to convince the wife that a holiday in NZ is a good idea.

Hey guys, The weather looks perfect for wednesday, so me, dad and my uncle are thinking of heading out from ocean reef for a fish. As we haven't been out in soo long we're not sure weather to go inside (E) or outside (W) of the reef, depending on what's biting. Can anyone give me some advice? Is anyone else going to make the most of this break in the weather? cheers Rob

Hillarys Boat Harbour The replacement of D Jetty is part of Department of Transport's rolling jetty replacement program, which began with the replacement of E Jetty in 2006. As with the E Jetty replacement, the works were undertaken by Engineered Water Systems (EWS). Prior to the replacement, D Jetty was a 22 year old concrete and wood structure. This has now been replaced with a modern pen system featuring an aluminium frame requiring minimal maintenance. The new pens were constructed using high density polyethylene for the pontoons and decking, which is significantly wider than the original. The new modern world class pen system added four new pens, catering for 20 metre vessels, bringing the total number of vessels accommodated on D Jetty to 52. Penholders will also benefit from improved fire, state of the art security systems including keycard access gates for all penholders and future provisions for CCTV, and fendering systems on the upgraded structure. Other construction projects recently completed at Hillarys Boat Harbour include: - 42 new pens in a floating pen system in the South-West corner of the harbour.
- A new universal access pontoon was built adjacent to the existing boat ramps.
Batavia Coast Marina, Geraldton A $1.9 million construction contract for the project at Batavia Marina was awarded to Engineered Water Systems (EWS) in January 2011. EWS have been contracted to design and construct a new state of the art floating pen system in the marina, which is now Geraldton's busiest recreational boating facility. EWS have previously completed pen construction projects at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Hillarys Boat Harbour (E Jetty and W-Z Jetties) and a universal access pontoon at Hillarys. The 42 pen Geraldton project will help meet growing demand at the marina which has seen the waiting list for a mooring at the facility grow to more than 70 in the recent years. In the past decade there has been a significant increase in the number of vessels over 7.5 metres in length in WA resulting in a shortage of pens in some locations. Design work commenced in the marina in early 2011 and work onsite commenced in May 2011. Construction of the pens is now complete, and final project completion is expected in August with the installation of the gangway and security gate and the connection of all services. As with the Hillarys and Fremantle projects, the new facilities include state of the art security systems including keycard access gates for all penholders and future provisions for CCTV. Hi Crew, It seems lately that a few people may have had some bad experiences with fishing charters up and down the coast. Whilst I appreciate you guys putting up your reports here, which is fine for you to do, how about you contact the operator and let them know that you weren't happy and see what they are willing to do about it. Many people have high expectations (and differing expectations) when it comes to these sorts of things. Try and put yourselves in their shoes, if the fish aren't biting, then there's not much you can do about it all you can do is try your best. Just try and think about it from their perspective before going all keyboard warrior styles and ripping into their business and doing untold damage just because you got the bad day. Everyone's heard the story, you shoulda been here yesterday!! This thread only serves as notice that I will be monitoring this stuff closely from now on as; a) because I don't want defamation suits or the threats that go with, b) because these guys try bloody hard to get you fish and it's not always easy, c) because you wouldn't like it if it was your business being dragged through the mud. So rather than jumping on the net and going to town, try ring the guys first and see what outcome you get and then if you aren't happy, have a good hard think before posting and try and keep it objective and tell your story and we will go from there. Cheers, Adam

Hey guys, Been sitting round waiting for this wind to stop blowing, hopefully tomorrow (Tuesday) looks OK. Never been out in Exmouth before and thus am only planning our tack by guess. Think we will put boat in the water at Exmouth Boat Harbour and head SE to Cooper Shoals, Camplin and Bennett Shoals after that. Looking for a feed, not so worried about trawling too much, although would do so if I was told it was worth it on the way. Anyone suggest this is a bad idea, or suggest a different direction we should head. Simon

hi guys please read some people are still strugling with the sending of the pics. you send them from your normal email page not from the f/w page ie: outlook express, just like sending a email to a freind you do a new mail and use the attach file button at the top of the page to attach your 3x pics in the text area you type..f/w user name, your name, species, lenght recorded, team name if you have one and north or south copy and paste both links into the address bar(1 at a time with a space in between) fishwrecked@hotmail.com fishwreckedphotocomp.33094@uploads.photobucket.com push send this way the 1 email is sent to both places at once, this is only required because no text will come through to photobucket and the only way we can see it is via the hotmail link. if someone knows how to make it easier please do tell!!! copy the links into your address book, i found this is easier and then its there for the next entry without having to copy and paste links all the time. clear as mud?????? cheers ron

Ok people... Can of worms.... Politics. Carbon tax. For $9.90 average a week for a family, why can't this money just go straight to solar panels, electric cars, planting trees and everyone suck it up VS giving 90% back to lower incomes and helping industry polluters? What does everyone think? I understand that we don't want to kill off jobs, stop mining etc but will it? The reason I question that; if it'll effect many jobs, is that I can't see myself turning off a light and sit in the dark casue of $3.30 a week or turning off my heater for $1.50 a week. Maybe mining is different if production significanlty drops, but will it? Im not a red head fan but trying toget a better fix on this tax and more opinions make a better judgment. Facts, not fights please....

Have a Lowrance HDS 5 sounder. I have gone through 2 mounting brackets so far with it in the space of 12 months. Has anyone else had the same problem? The bracket has been correctly installed. I am looking for a solution as I will either have to buy a 3rd bracket for another $25 at the chance of it snapping or find an alternative. Does any one have any suggestions? Cheers.

Five rescued after boat hull splits GABRIELLE KNOWLES, The West Australian July 10, 2011, 10:43 am Five people have been rescued from the cold ocean after the hull of their boat split and it overturned about 20km off the coast of Mindarie this morning. Those onboard were able to activate an EPIRB and make a mayday call to police before they went into the water just before 9am. The rescue helicopter found the group in the ocean clinging to the hull of the stricken vessel. The police helicopter hovered over them until a Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue boat arrived to pull them to safety about 9.35am. The group told rescuers the hull of the catamaran began splitting and the boat took on water. It then rolled and began sinking. Rescuers are bringing the five people to shore at Mindarie and towing their boat in. Water Police and sea rescue groups said it was the latest in a series of rescues over the weekend and it was unusual to have so many emergencies during winter. Three men were pulled from the water yesterday afternoon after their fishing boat overturned near Garden Island. Water Police Sgt Michael Wear urged skippers to carefully check weather conditions before heading out. “Check not just the wind but the sea and swell,” he said. He said cases water police were involved with over the weekend, which included five separate rescues around WA, showed the importance of having safety equipment such as EPIRBs onboard. “Lives were saved this weekend because the boats all had EPIRBs and searchers could be directed straight to the stricken vessels,” he said. “Boaties need to have the correct safety equipment, making sure EPIRBs are registered and ensure they let people know where they are going.” Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue Group operations officer Frank Pisani said the high level of boating activity had prompted rescue groups to man more vessels than they would normally in winter. He also urged boat owners to ensure they had working radios and log in with their local sea rescue group before heading out.
