Daiwa Emeraldas 2506 - Anyone used one?

Hey Guys,

Im quite interested in this particular Reel but im a little worried about the internals, all that ripping and jigging might not be the best but that is what it is built for.

Has anyone used one or has one, or should i just stick to my Sol 2000. Ill be putting it on a Egi Force EB-832L.

Cheers Guys for your input.

Exmouth July - over the school holidays

Managed to score a week off during my mrs school break (she's a teacher), heading up to Exmouth for the week (9th - 16th). Hired the 6m fwd cabin from Aspa at exmouth boat hire for a few days, hopefully it all goes well. Been told it can get quite busy over the school holidays like most other popular destinations??

So far I'll be meeting up with aussiebreamer to head out for a fishing trip (or ten) - but if anyone wants to meet up to have a cast & a few drinks let us know.

Cheers.

Dhuys and Amberjacks off Cape Nat

Well finally got a break in the weather yesterday and got out for a fish. The plan was to get a couple of dhuys and then go jigging for sambos. Dave (wind on Dave) and Liam (lamby) were my deckies for the day.

Hit the first spot at around 7am. First drift was a little off target but the next resulted in a triple hook up which resulted in 3 dhuys. Smallest was released and the other two were dispatched into the extreme coolers esky.

One more drift and another 2 were boated both being released in good condition. All fish caught on a range of plastics and metal jigs.

With a couple of dhuys in the esky it was time to go and find some sambos. Decided to try a spot in the 60s that I hadn't fished in over a year that holds a few sambos from time to time.

After a bit of searching found a nice bait ball. First drift resulted in a couple of jigged amberjacks. Unusual catch for down here but great fun.

The next couple of hours were spent jigging up more of these little speedsters. The outfits slowly got lighter and lighter the more we caught.

The next few photos are some of the smaller outfits loaded up. The first being a Jig Force 90g rod.

A Major Craft Crostage

A Evergreen Poseidon Spin Jerker

After the session on the amberjacks we tried jigging a few other spots for not much, then called it a day.

Hopefully get out again this week while the weathers good.

Tow Cam

After getting some killa footage from under the boat off dampier etc one thing tht we would love is to see the fish striking and chasing the lures.

Anyone had much to do with this...... http://www.towcam.com.au/

Some of that footage is really good! Makes you wonder how many fish come up for a look at your lure when trolloing etc

DoF testing boat wraps in Broome

An innovative technique, to manage invasive marine pest threats in Western Australia, is being put to the test by Department of Fisheries’ staff in Broome today.

Aquatic Environment Branch Manager Rae Burrows said introduced marine pests posed one of the greatest threats to the State’s marine biodiversity and integrity of coastal habitats.

“Growth of marine plants and animals on vessel hulls, or biofouling, is the main way these pests arrive,” Ms Burrows said. “The boat ‘sleeve’ we are using today provides a method of quarantining the vessel’s hull for treatment so that identified pest threats can be better managed.”

“The special encapsulation device, called an IMProtector (Invasive Marine Pest protector), is designed to be positioned around a vessel while it is still in the water and generally requires only a few personnel to operate.”

Ms Burrows said the special hull sleeve was manufactured for use in Broome and the owners of a local vessel Intombi had kindly allowed their boat to be used for this week’s trials.

“The device is of sufficient size to fit most illegal foreign vessels which may be encountered in the region, but it can also be used for other vessels up to a similar size,” she said.

“Once the vessel is encapsulated the threat is immediately reduced before numerous treatments, such as chemicals or heat, can be used to kill the organisms.”

The State Government has invested $9.4 million over the next two years to boost WA’s defences against significant aquatic biosecurity risks.

Ms Burrows said the Department of Fisheries was the lead agency responsible for aquatic biosecurity in Western Australian waters.

“The department has a dedicated team of staff involved in policy, research and compliance, who work to reduce the risk of invasive marine species entering our State’s important marine environment,” she said.

“It has been estimated that, of the 250 non-indigenous marine species identified in Australian waters, approximately 75 per cent have arrived as biofouling on vessels. A number of these species are considered to be invasive pests, because they breed quickly and over-run our native species.”

first attempt solo

Ok, I'm heading out tomorrow alone. I wont be going far, only in The Sound. Now how do you guys do the retrieve thing alone?

It's only a 4.1m dinghy so not huge, I just have this fear of making a complete arse of my self while the boat floats off cause I've triped over the trailer & face planted the ramp.

Any hints or tips would be appriciated.

Identifying rod - Butterworth?

Hi guys,

New member here from the northern suburbs of Perth. Into land based fishing. Been reading a lot but now's the time to start posting!

I've just 'inherited' a couple of old surf rods from my Dad. First is a Butterworth Powerrods Bronte, a 7168 noodle of a thing. Guides are in good nick - just needs a rebind. I might rebind it use it as a set line rod.

But to the subject...the other rod is a similar era and Dad reckons he bought it around the same time, but has no idea what it is - can't remember.

It's a two piece, same mustard colour as a lot of the Butterworths, with chromed brass joining ferrules and chrome reel seat, low mount and with a wooden first handle, like a sand spike but not tapered. This handle is messed around, though, and could have looked like anything when new.

The grip above the seat is cork.

It has a metal stripper half way, for an Alvey, and the common orange & white Fuji guides.

Thing is, is the size. The only markings left on it are S* 6138, and what remains of the second letter looks like an 'S' (not a U). The font looks similar to the marking on the Bronte.

So I'm guessing it's a 6 wrap 138" (11 1/2 foot) 2 piece Butterworth surf spin rod. But I can't find any evidence of such a beast.

Anyone heard of one?

Cheers

Long leg motors

Joining braid of different strengths?

I've got about 100m of pe8 left and about the same of pe6 on some spools out the back, which I could just join onto some of my other reels but they are pretty full at the moment.  I've got a new reel to trial and figure I might try and join these two braids to use them rather than let them sit in my shed and deteriorate.  I guess my question is, should I go the mono backing, the 6 and then the 8, or the 8 and then the 6, does it make any difference in feeling bites or any other issues?  I'm thinking I go the mono, 6, then 8 and just see how it goes.  I could just fork out for some new braid but would prefer to try and use some of this leftover stuff to get value for money.

Safe or crazy?

Hi guys,

Just got back from Karratha fishing trip. One thing i want to know is..

We were fishing the back of legende Island..

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Without fail every cast resulted in shark hook ups, mako's ,spinners, bronzies, tigers, reef sharks. We tryed our best to get red throat up as quick as and had up to 4 BIG sharks fighting each other for it. One landed on the back of the boat. We only stayed here becuse it was the only place shelterd enough.

The next thing shocked me. Some guys rolled up next to us, got into wetsuits  and two of the four hopped in the water. Now these sharks wernt just hungry, they were in a frenzie and they were all over 6ft, one would of gone 10ft easy.

They didnt have a dive flag, we told them of how many sharks were there but they didnt care.

Im not to clued up with diving but wouldnt this be almost suicide?

Fish Parasites Beware

I have read about these things before, but thought they were a bit of a wives tale. Obviously its true. It was not written in the article however, I read previously it only can be picked up by humans if the fished is not cooked.

just a question to find out weather , if you've bought and paid for the RFBL , you think you should be allowed to sell your catch.

following on from the other thread where a lot of fisho's don't like fish , they could get something back for their day out.

catching cobbler

i've been lazy all weekend so being a nice night i thought i might try my luck at my local jetty for some squid. After about an hour or so of casting jigs around and no sign of any squid,i decided it was time to call it a night. On my way back  up the boat ramp i was looking to see what fish were in the water and then i couldnt believe my eyes.7 big fat cobbler all sitting about 1m from the shore and no gidgee ,all i could do was laugh.thats what i get for not being prepeared i guess.

has any had much luck catching them on rod and reel? i've only ever speared them so any advice would be much appreciated

i thought i may aswell i'd add a photo of my pb cobbler i got a little while back it went 62cm :)

Noosa fishing

hi guys visiting sister in brisbane end aug/start sept

staying in noosa for 5 days and might be able to sneak on board a charter one of the days

does anyone have any experience in fishing here or recommend any charters? had a look online but really dont know which ones to trust.

might not be the best time of year compared to warmer months so if its really not worth it im happy to give it a miss.

being from south oz pretty blessed with 10kg reds, SBT and monster kgw but looking for something different more tropical species or those i havent encountered yet ie. mackeral, kingfish, ambers, cobia

some of teh charters look like they catch 2-3kg snapper and perch so really not keen on that.

would prefer lure/plastic fishing and love my light gear.

cheers
