Coral Bay South Passage

I was going to include this image of Coral Bay's south passage, as seen on my GPS, in a previous thread....but couldn't find the option that allowed me to do this. If there's a way to do this, I'd apreciate some advice, thanks.

I'm using a Navionics gold card of all of Australia in my Lowrance HDS8m, but I'm sure it's a similar display on other chart software, too.

As you can see, there's a navigation line on the chart and if you follow that, you should get thru the passage safely.....weather permitting! As mentioned in the previous thread, you'll see 3 orange triangles up on the hill and you line them up one behind the other, as your reference.

We were in Coral Bay in April 2009 but we only had the 4m tinny then, so we fished and dived inside the reef so I don't have any experience navigating this passage. I'm sure other FW members familiar with it, can help in this regard.

Hope this helps.

fishing rockingham/point keenedy

hey guys went fishing in rockingham/port kennedy last friday night got some tailor whiting couple rays and banjos but didnt know were we went?? does anyone no a spot that has a boatramp then like 10 metres rocks on both sides then beach one of my mates said long point or something but wasnt sure the ramp looked fairly new aswell

Two rocks this morning for a short session

Had a good morning out at two rocks we went about 8miles out and bagged out by 10am after queing at the ramp at 6ish was a pleasent morning we had fun. We started out with the first drop and got bugger all but a small sharkabout 1m reefy. So we moved to a old spot we hadnt been to ing years and it came the goods first drop on it a size baldie then the next drift another one and my brother got one on this drift too. We decided to go around again and i got the snapper, followed by a big Dhuie that we got to see but snapped me off and siprizingly swam away. We ended up catching another Baldie that we sent back on the release weight and lots of snapper that all went back well. All in all a nice morning getting a good feed.

Fish ID Please

Caught this little guy off Mindarie last night. Does anyone know what it is?

Big fresh (not frozen) baits wanted

I bought a marlin outfit to use at Exxy in April and wouldnt mind to test it out in Perth before I head up there.

I do a lot of night fishing on my boat, but ordinarily just get small sharks (likely due to small baits). Looking to tangle with a big fella so wondering if someone can PM me details of a place where I can get large baits (around 3-5kg) that have not been frozen. A very big fish head will be fine.

I know people will tell me to stop being lazy and go and catch them myself, but if I do a sambo run or something to go and catch one, then it is unlikely that I will go out again that night for an overnighter for sharks, meaning that the bait will be sitting in my fridge for days/weeks before I use it, which isnt ideal.

Any help much appreciated!

Dan

Researching the 'Capes Current'

Satellite drifters to help research into WA’s Capes Current

Six satellite-linked drifters will be deployed between Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste this week, to help Department of Fisheries WA researchers learn more about the Capes Current.

Supervising Scientist, Dr Dan Gaughan said little was known about the day-to-day behaviour of the important Capes Current, but it was vital in carrying and dispersing eggs and larvae of summer spawning fish, such as the popular Western Australian dhufish.

“There is a need to understand where the eggs and larvae of shelf species may be transported to, if anywhere, after spawning,” Dr Gaughan said.

“The Capes Current is a northbound ocean current that flows up the continental shelf of south west Australia every year around summer. It is named after Capes Leeuwin and Naturaliste, where it is thought to originate.

“We know it is driven by the persistent and seasonal southerly winds, but the drifters we will be dropping into the current will give us a better idea of its speed, the direction of flow and sea surface temperatures, on an hourly basis.

“This data will help improve our oceanographic modelling for the region and provide a better understanding of both along-shelf and cross-shelf water movements and their potential impacts on dispersal of eggs and larvae.”

Dr Gaughan said the new satellite drifters were being deployed under a project funded by the Western Australian Marine Science Institution and the drifters could be tracked online by researchers and also interested members of the public at http://sharkmonitor.com/.

“These drifters are designed to follow surface currents by having a six-metre long drogue (think of it as a sock with holes), suspended below the surface. It is tethered to a surface unit that, every hour, will transmit sea temperatures and position via satellite.”

Additional research projects will also be carried out from the RV (Research Vessel) Naturaliste, as it journeys through South West waters this month.

“It will be a multi-faceted trip, as far as dhufish research is concerned,” said Dr Gaughan.

“A researcher from the Curtin University will be aboard with his acoustic logger, listening for dhufish noises as part of a Fisheries Research Development Corporation-funded project.

“Department of Fisheries researchers will also be continuing work on the identification of critical habitats for juvenile dhufish, which is part of a Natural Resource

Newb questions

Hi all.

Really enjoy reading this site. I used to muck around a bit but stopped fishing for a few years. Now I'm back and I want to start taking it a bit more seriously, trying to catch some more exotic fish rather than just herring/gardies.

I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with. I live in Perth metro but don't mind travelling an hour or two outside of Perth for some beach/rock/jetty fishing every now and then. Mostly an ocean fisher.

1) How do you properly set drag on a spinning reel? Do you just adjust it by feel based on the size of fish you are going for or is there a more calculated way of doing it? I assume when I go for smaller fish I can just set it to as tight as possible, or should drag always be set a bit loose incase you hookup a biggie?

2) What's the best way to deal with a fish after caught. I hear if it is a decent one, you should bleed it immediately. I understand you do this by cutting below the gills? Also do you put it on ice straight away? When do you scale and gut your fish, on site or back at home? Will it have a bad effect on the fish if you leave its guts in there too long?

3) Braid colour, do fish get scared from certain colours? Or does it not matter because the leader should be almost invisible?

4) Weather. This is the one I'm most intrigued about. The good fishermen always seem to know when the fish will be around and mostly based on weather conditions. So what weather conditions should I be looking out for in Perth and surrounding towns? I've wasted a lot of time and money on dud fishing nights and would like to cut down on these by looking at weather conditions and only going when the weather suits (easier said than done!).

5) KG ratings on rods, reels (drag) and lines. How do they all relate to eachother? If I have a rod rated for 10kg, reel rated for 10kg drag and line rated at 8kg, does it mean if I hookup a biggie that the line will be the one to go first? ie snap. Or if the rod was only rated for 5kg, that it would snap before the reel busted or the line snapped?

6) The best way to bring in a fish. This is kinda related to the KG rating above. A friendly fishermen I spoke to at the jetty mentioned that a rod can be rated at say 10kg but if you use the correct technique, that you should be able to bring in heavier fish. I was too embarassed to ask him about what correct technique is, so is there a "correct" way to bring in a biggie other than just yanking and reeling in?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

Cheers,

KJ.

NEW BRAID TO LEADER CONNECTION???

i have just read the article by Mike Roennfelt in the latest western anglerand in it he mentions the connection Ant Simper uses for braid to leader connections, an improved albright but without the bimini in the braid? so in effect a single strand of braid which you do a normal improved albright in , i have just done two of these in 65tuf line to 100lb 10x and 20lb tuf line to 40;lb 10 x and while i don"t have scales i have pulled pretty damn hard on both connections without failure! maybe another option ????? it certainly ties well and is very slim through the guides with the single braid instead of the multiple wraps of doubled (bimini) braid?/ what do you think??  cheers

shark bay crabs

Crabbing good in Shark Bay in May?

Coral Bay

Gday Fellas

I am heading to Coral Bay in May and was wondering whether anyone has any co-ords for the South Passage.  I have fished out of Exmouth a few times but never out of Coral Bay.  I plan to follow someone through the passage the first time but thought it would be handy to have the marks.  Also is it true that there are some lead marks on the shore that you can line up??  Pm me if you want to.

Cheers for any help
