Swan river blue's
Submitted by GrahamM on Thu, 2011-02-17 06:52G'day I went for a dive last night down the swan to see if the silt had lifted a bit as I haven't been since December due to the poor vis from the dredging. Thought i would at least get a feed of prawns and maybe a couple of blue swimmers ( i usually get between 30 and 100 prawns, 10 to 30 cms long and the odd crab ). Dissapointingly the silt was everyware it was as bad a i could remember vis in les than 12m was 1.5m being generous and deeper than 12m you struggled to see your outstreched hand. However i did end up with a few Blues for my troubles ( i couldnt stand it any more after 40 min ). Sadly i only got 4 yes thats right 4 prawns i have never gotten this few i hope this is'nt a sign of how the future of the river will be. I think I would have seen more than 25 flatties poor buggers must have been starving! On a possitive side the sea horses seem to be doing well in the silty conditions as they were everyware.

Reel advise (jigging)
Submitted by cratertycho on Wed, 2011-02-16 20:53Hi all,
Good day, i am pretty new to this forum, hoping to get some advise on reel to match my rod which i got it off a member here (Ryan).
Rod : kamikaze warlord sp 165 pe8 jig rod
My budget is around $300bucks, and i am hoping to get a lighter reel than the 1 i have now ( Finnor 7500, weights 900g), and has a line capacity of 250-300m on 70lb braided line.
So ar i am considering a few reels, Saltist 6500, Saragosa 8000 (less line capacity i think?)or Exceler 5000.
Any other reel suggestions?
Thanks.

Fishing On The Boat
Submitted by DieHard on Wed, 2011-02-16 17:01Hey all
we have had a boat for around 3 years now a 5.6m ali, and dad is slowly getting into the fishing (yes im the only one who does it.a.lot.)
we often head WNW out from ocean reef until we hit 3mile reef, we are trying to get pinkies or dhuies maybe even a baby sambo... we never really know what we are looking for so we are basically fishing blind...
we only have a standard depth sounder the Furuna* X52 and dont know how to use it. dont know what to look for. and dont even know where to start??
can some of you boaties give some basic advice about where to start? what to look for? what depth? and drift or anchor?
we do have a Handhelp GPS so if anybody has coords of a spot that still gets the odd fish i would really appreciate it and my dad would be stoked!
thanks all!

Rossmoyne Area
Submitted by Pezdog on Wed, 2011-02-16 10:21Hi guys
Just moved into the Rossmoyne area and just wondering if there is any point going to the river and having a cast around Rossmoyne?
I can literally walk there in a minute or so and would be good if anyone has had any luck there. There seems to be a lot of reed and weed but is there any sandy spots etc. I always see boats out this way but mainly skiing.
Cheers

Help I've lost my bearings...
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Wed, 2011-02-16 10:02Well bearing (singular) anyway...
A mate and I made a last minute decision to head out for an evening fish in the Sound last night. We didn't see any action other than a bit of fun with a medium sized ray and a few junk fish. The sunset was nice though.
Anyway we got back to the ramp at about 8.30pm and pulled the boat in, hit the main drag back to the Freeway and I noticed the back tyre on the boat trailer sticking out wider than the mud-guard. I pulled over to see what was going on and when we looked at the back of the tyre we found the thing had nearly come off the axle... there might have been an inch of axle holding the tyre on.
After a short wait the father-in-law came down and brought a decent jack and a few tools so we could replace it.
Glad we spotted it then rather than seeing it take something out on the Freeway when we'd got some speed up!

Improving hookup rate with skirts
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2011-02-15 19:49Mate and I went trolling the other day.
We had 3 strikes each during the course of the day. From the feel of it (and given they were all around the same area) I am assuming they were all the same smallish tuna (striped).
However - he was running a small 'lively lure' with trebles front and rear. I was running a Williamson skirt (Dorado I think).
In each case they hit my lure first (but didnt hook up), then went back and hit his lure. He landed 2 of his 3 and had the third stay on a while, but none of mine hooked.
Hooks are pretty sharp but not razor. Certainly no more blunt than those he was running.
Skirt might have been a little large for the fish, but anyone got any other suggestions? Perhaps multiple hooks in skirt or stiffening the rig inside the skirt?
Anyone tried trebles in skirts? Or snelled hooks on angles to one another?

mindarie dhu's today
Submitted by Ryan C on Tue, 2011-02-15 18:41hi Guys, as i mentioned yesterday with the weather being so good i decided to go fishing today with a guy who works for me (lets just call him the dhuie magnet!!! some of you may recognise him from the photo!(and he may be a dentist!!) anyway we launched around 5.15 this morning and by 7.30 we had our full bag limit of demersals and had released 8 other dhu's while trying to avoid them!!! (a nice problem to have!!!, anyway we ended up with 10 dhu's between 4-15kg(8 released of course) , 1 nice baldy, 1 blackass, and we rounded out the icebox with a nice king george, on the last drop while trying to avoid dhu's i had changed to 1/0's and was targeting king george when you guessed it i hooked a dhu of 70cm or so and landed it on the 1/0 hooks !! all the dhu's went back strongly as we were not aiming to keep anymore so we were stopping and letting them decompress and only 1 needed the release weight , i think i've been spoilt forever now as this guy has taken me out twice now for a total of 20 dhu's, 11 big king george, a baldy , several large blackass and a few unstoppables i have pulled the hooks on!!! we also trolled for a short while today and hooked a couple of striped tuna , awesome day! we also saw Andy Mac at the ramp and he had done well too, here are the photo's of the 2 biggest dhu around 11and 15 kilo's cheers.(for those interested all fish were caught on californian squid.)

lure advice
Submitted by humb on Mon, 2011-02-14 21:38Hi all.
I'm going down to Busso this weekend and then down to Albany and I'm looking forward to getting my line wet.
I've never fished with lures so was hoping for some advice. I want to stock up before I head down so other than the famous poppers and squid lures, what else should I grab? Looking to catch whatever is out there biting at the moment from the beach, jetties and rocks along the coast. Are certain colours better than others?
Looking to buy about 10-12 of them so which types of lures do you recommend I buy? 4 poppers, 2 squid lures, 2 metal lures and a few more maybe?
Also regarding technique when using lures, is it safe to say you just move the lure around in the water to try and imitate a real fish?
Cheers.

Pimp my ride - fishing trolley.
Submitted by knigit on Mon, 2011-02-14 19:43I beach fish most of the time and I've been getting into shark hunting of late. The trouble is that when you decide to beach fish with 20 litres of burley you have to start scaling back the amount of beer you carry with you!
........
.......
I even fished an all nighter sober the other day and in the depths of my misery I decided to bodge up a beach trolley to lug everything around. If anyone's used one some insight would be much appreciated. 2 wheel fridge trolley style vs a 4 wheeler? Detatchable wheels and a sled style undercarriage for really soft sand?? Fixed folding handle or a rope to pull it along with? Thinking wheelbarrow wheels and an ali and ply frame depending on what I can beg borrow and steal.
LOL, studied mechanical engineering so no doubt it will be the most overengineered sled in the world by the time I'm finished playing around but please put some whacky ideas out here for me. Rod holders, gaslight, chopping/cleaning surface and a seat are a few additions I'm toying with aside from the compulsory esky and burley bucket, bring em on...

how did the big dogs go?
Submitted by scotto on Mon, 2011-02-14 06:14had not a bad day yesterday.
we trolled from garden island to rotto, then a good few laps around west end, before deciding to shoot out to the fads at about 2 oclock. the mackies and tuna were a bit slow, with water temp at around 23'c from rotto to the 50m mark, and 23.5'c after. we were rewarded with a couple of good dollies, but the real action was happenig out a bit deeper, with the VHF alive with reports of big marlin hookups, free jumping marlin, bust offs, getting spooled on 24kg, strikes and roughed-up leaders, and also a couple of reports of BIG whaler sharks cruising around.
just curious to see who was out there, and how did they all go?

Robson Green
Submitted by Joodles on Sun, 2011-02-13 18:14I couldn't handle that bloke when I first started watching his show, that was before I got his Criac! Now I catch his show whenever I can and reckon the blokes hillarious and really does do some interesting angling.
A quote from his show today whilst he was going out fishing the primitave parts of the Philliphines with a local village fisherman -
[RG] do you have a family?
[local] yes
[RG] do you have any sons?
[local] yes, five sons
[RG] five sons? you must really love your wife!
[local] mmm
[RG] I love my cigar too but I take it out sometimes!
Had me crackin up when you hear it with his accent and sence of humour. As it happens now, I prefer his fishing show to the others on fox weekend mornings. Am I alone?

humpbacked humpback or light refraction?
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2011-02-13 17:22Some whales can be up to 50 feet long, but it’s fair to say this one is probably a few feet shorter than average.
That’s because scientists reckon he is suffering from a bent spine giving new meaning to the ‘humpback’ whale.
Spotted off the coast of Hawaii’s Kauai Island on Monday, the humpback was first thought to have been hit by a boat, causing the incredible disfigurement.
In distress: The injured humpback was spotted off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii from an ultralight aircraft this week
But David Schofield, marine mammal response coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, dismissed the boat theory, suggested it was more likely to be scoliosis – or curvature of the spine.
He told a local newspaper: ‘They're not like cartoon animals.
‘They don't hold the shape of the contusion. Sometimes they'll have like a little imprint, but it's just not too plausible to see that if the animal had been impacted there that the peduncle or the tail shaft would've stayed that way.’
Scoliosis is rare but scientists say they have seen it in other marine mammals like dolphins.
hamlin bay stingray slaughter
Submitted by fishmike on Sun, 2011-02-13 14:54sunday times this morning there was a story about some stupid young fisherman spearing a black ray called stumpy as it had no sting, people used to pat it in shallows, these dumbass fisherman speared it and chopped it up just for sake of it in front of about 40 people including kids who were crying, apparently some people had to be stopped from attacking these young fishos, apparently they didnt break any law but this sort of thing just shouldnt happen

Fishing in Thunder and lightning
Submitted by crasny1 on Sun, 2011-02-13 09:22Whats the view and opiniom about doing this. Was in a fanatastic little super cell yesterday off Dampier. Its was awesome to see, but I dragged all the graphites off the Targa/rocket launcher bar, stuck them in the cab and fished with my troll rigs only, which are all glass, but way to heavy for the job.
Just wondering whether I am over cautious with the Graphite rods?

Lancelin Beach.....IS THIS WEIRD!?
Submitted by tommyqueenfish on Sun, 2011-02-13 09:04Hi all
I have been going to Lancelin everyweekend for the last 9 years. Recently after surfing back beach my dad took me for a ride in our car up there for a flick for tailor. after 10 minutes of no results we got bored and decided to go back home. On the way home we saw a fisherman land a fish. I asked him what it was and he did not know so I got out of the car and had a look and it was a Dart. The next day I was looking for another good surf spot and I found another fisho who had also caught a Dart! Then when I went out surfing i saw 2 MASSIVE schools of herring all bundled up in a black smudge bu when they went past I saw that they had black tail tips so deffinatly a Herring school!
Do herring usually school like salmon....i know there speicies is related?
Are Dart usually caught there?
Cheers

A friendly word of warning to the skippers
Submitted by allrounder on Sun, 2011-02-13 06:45Have been meaning to put this out there for a while. As the technology gets better keeping spots a bit quiet is going to get harder.I dont mean to discourage guys from taking others fishing as it will be a sad day when you cant trust anyone.Just be aware that with the new i phones, cameras and video cameras a fair few of them now have gps locators so now a pic can ping the spot.In theory if you take a pic of the deckie on your boat with his camera or i phone then you are pushing the ping button for them.Just a word of caution.
