I don't believe it...
Submitted by Andy Mac on Tue, 2011-01-25 14:21I just won the weekly Lifestyle Channel's "Hooked" catch of the week fishing pic competition. Got $430 worth of gear in the mail today including mako sunnies and a Diawa exceler 2500DA reel.
I had been scanning the foxtel sites to see what fishing shows were coming up and stumbled on their pic comp and decided what the hell, so shot one in of Pete B's Tuna. Well at least the judges liked it.

Dhufish frames- will they tell us how this helps?
Submitted by Baron Von Fishalot on Mon, 2011-01-24 20:37Over the years I've considered handing over the frames to help the research side of things, recently the Fisheries boys paid us a visit at Dawesville ramp and as we showed them the catch and discussed the days events it dawned on me that they didn't ask us for the frames or make any enquiry as to where we caught the fish. They diligently checked boat rego and fishing licence info (as they should) but it seemed that was all they cared about, they were polite and friendly (as always) and good representatives of this important group. It came up later when my Dad (83 yrs old and a lifetime fisho) asked if they recorded any info on the fish that we all agreed that the boys and girls of the Fisho Dept could be doing a bit more in terms of collecting data. We would be only too happy to do so, are logbooks still happening? Does anyone know the deal with handing in frames in Mandurah? Don't want to appear to be Fisheries whinging as this is far from my view on things but should they be doing a bit more or should I??

Busso In April
Submitted by dowie55 on Mon, 2011-01-24 12:52Hi Guys
I am heading down to bussleton in the next school holidays around to 20th of april and am planning on quite a bit of fishing. Where we are staying has its own private jetty and will be mainly fishing off that.
I like fishing but am no fishing expert and was just hoping for some advice,
i have heard that the salmon will be around at this time of year and was wondering how to catch those, baits, lures, time of day etc?
also when i was there a year or so ago noticed quite a few rays and a coule of what i think were gummies around, wondering how to catch these aswell?
and any other info on what will be around and how to catch it would be great?
Cheers

Way Down South for a week
Submitted by Goodz on Mon, 2011-01-24 08:50Just returned from another week down Albany "way" primarily for my brothers wedding but with the boat in tow I managed to wet a line a few times when the weather allowed.
First weekend was spent mostly catching bream at a certain fired up location that had a few hundred black bream schooled up all over size with the biggest up to 40cm+. Unfortunately the new waterproof camera was forgotten so I missed some awesome footage of fish all under the boat during several sessions. Plastics and bait accounted for over 60 fish with only a couple kept to keep us fed while we camped the 2 nights.
Next trip was mid week with a good weather forecast I took my good mate Adrian out deeper to explore a new area. Initial sounding around of the area started to have me worried as it looked fairly featureless until finally we found a good show and from there we found several nice lumps. Adrian started on bait while I sent down some plastics and jigs. I didn't take long till Ade had a nice black ass onboard followed by a nice nannygai to me. Adrian soon switched to try the jigs with a pirate style eupro jig while I fluttered a fanky around. The fishing turned on with instant hook ups as soon as we hit the bottom with a couple more nannygai, skippy, black ass, a few big leatherjacket, and plenty of seargant bakers keeping us guessing.
Then it was time for a big hookup with Adrain getting smashed a fair way off the bottom and had us calling it for a small kingie with the silent hope of a dhuie in the back of our minds. We were stoked when we saw the silver and purple sides of a beautiful dhuie come to the surface, the first landed on my new boat! It went 8kgs on my possibly dodgy scales and was nailed on a 100g red eupro pirate style jig.
The fishing slowed down on the bottom but the surface was alive as far as we could see with tuna breaking the surface in every direction and the sound of the splashing easily travelled over the glassy water. Beautifullllllllll day. After a few fruitless casts at the tuna I had given up chasing them and wouldn't you know it, hooked one on the way down to the bottom on jig!
After getting no more hits on the jig for a few drifts I couldn't resist dropping a bait down and first drop resulted in us finally getting the most common southern fish we always seem to get, a nice queen snapper.
Oh I also forgot that sometime during the day after winding up our jigs we noticed something brown cruising around under the surface, almost looking like a wobby or something until we realised it was a huge squid! Adrian kept the jigs over the side while I quickly tied on a squid jig and in that time another squid had joined the party. The bigger one hit the mcarthy plastic and then darted away but I managed to get tied up and in the water with the smaller one nailing it. A very solid squid caught in 50m of water over 6km from the nearest land. It went 37cm on the tube measurement and that was the smaller squid. The bigger one was seriously close to twice the size!
Anyway, turned out to be a great day out with Adrian landing another small tuna on the troll back in. It was great exploring some new areas and finding some productive ground in the new tub. Only bummer was trying to retrieve the boat without a winch handle which went missing on the launch! It was slow going with an adjustable spanner.
Last trip out was on saturday morning when I took my dad out for an inshore fish for some squid and kg whiting. Beautiful glassy conditions greeted us and we quickly had a couple of solid squid onboard from the first drift. We then hunted for some KG but from a few hours of moving around we only managed one big boy to my old man and a few undersize. The herring and skippy were plentiful though and made up the numbers for a feed that night. Another fun trip out. Also sorry no pics for the trip either!
Good old southern waters, love it!

Coral Bay Fishing Charter?
Submitted by wazzbat on Mon, 2011-01-24 04:58Hi all.
Me and a few others are heading up to Coral Bay just for a week from the 4th April and are interested in heading out on a charter boat. Unfortunately Captain Bernie will be out at the Montebellos until the 15th so that won't be an option so I was wondering if anyone could recommend another company to head out with up there? Anyone had any experiance with other companies?

Eventfull arvo crabbing!!
Submitted by barneyboy on Sun, 2011-01-23 19:36Went out crabbing in the boat with the young cousin in law this arvo. We had just finished pulling the first string when this bloke in a yak with a sail on started to head our way waving and yelling. WTF? So we headed over to him and said that a tinny with 5 people on board had sunk in the middle of 'the Lesh'.
We bolted over to find 2 blokes in the water, 1 clinging to the tinny and 1 treading water next to it. The other 3 had been picked up by another tinny beforehand. We pulled both blokes on board and preceeded to pull their crab nets ect in.
Finally after a few tow attempts, we managed to tow their tinny over onto the right side and took these two blokes and boat back to the ramp. They were okay just a bit shocked with the whole thing, but nothing a few bourbons wouldnt fix. They were only in the water for a few minutes and reckoned it happened so quick. If it wasnt for the bloke on the yak flagging us down we wouldnt have known!!
We ended up with 10 size crabs and chucked a heap of small ones back. A fairly jamb packed 3 hours crabbing!! haha.

Tailor at North Mole
Submitted by ish_lovesfishing on Sun, 2011-01-23 11:52Hey Guys,
So i went to North Mole lastnight 22nd Jan, as we drove in we saw the fisheries there it was about 1 hour before sunset, and that made me smile! i was very glad that they came down to north mole, alot of funny business happines there ( with undersized fish that is)
We decided to fish in a diff spot this time, i rigged up a paternoster on my 10ft with a whole mullet on, cast that out, dint take long till i got snagged, while trying unsnag my rig, the fisheries came to ask us some questions, caught anyting? what type of fish you targeting etc? nice guy i must say, the other guy was chattin to people further down. by this time i was fed up with the 10ft haha , i left it with some line out, managed to take it out eventually, rigged up my 6ft 7 rod ...with a float and about 1 metre + leader with gang hooks for sardines.
Nothing really hapened till about 30 to 45 after sunset, caught about 9 or so tailor 2 of which looked around the 28cm mark but dint get to messure, they decided to un hook themselves and jump back in the water, the rest where around the 25 cm mark no keepers unfortunatly :( used blue sardines, baby and big mullies. tailor have some seriouse teeth, i now coz the one bugga bit me! quater of my finger in his mouth, haha finger wouldnt stop bleeding ( i cant imagine the bigger tailor!), not only that it then bit my tshirt and wouldnt let go, that made 2 of the hook go straight through my tshirt by this time my dad is killed laughing, managed to unhook the fish before it caused any more trouble and took me fair while to take out the other hooks!
About 1 hour 30min +- after dark the fisheries came back, same fella came to ask if we have caught anything etc. as for the guy fishing furhter down on my right, i think he got hammered, saw the other fisheries guy goign through his bucket and stuff, writting out a warning or fine.
just before we left, i caught what i think is a snook, i rather get bitten by a small tailor then that bloody thing, the teeth on them are some seriouse stuff, looks like from the barracouta or barracuda family, i dint have my camera with me so no pics sorry guys. Are snook any good to eat? When would be the best time, rig and bait to use to catch snook? Everyone seemed to be catching undersized tailor and surprisingly there where no bull herring at all.
We left shortly after which was about 10:15pm it was a good night out , just no keepers but thats ok atleast we caught something.
Cheers for reading

1st attempt - no Redfin :-(
Submitted by Trezzie on Sun, 2011-01-23 08:36Well my first attemp at freshwater fishing was unsuccessful. Harvey Dam is really low and all the feeders are dry as a bone. Really muddy and lots of snags around the sticks too and I lost a lure there. Visibility was not great so I moved on pretty soon.
Checked out Brunswick River as well but way too many people around and it also wasnt flowing much. Lastly went to Wellington Dam and checked out the Collie River downstream from Honeymoon Pool (a long walk away from all the campers screaming and yelling) but no bites there even though it looked like an ideal spot with overhangs and logs etc. After this went upriver to a few good looking spots but nothing again except a few nibbles from small fry. Had a nice swim or two though and geez its a pretty piece of WA!!
Noticed the spinners and RMG lures act really differently in the water and my RMG takes a while to get to the bottom. Not sure if a sinker would help or hinder this though? I think I need more experience how to best use my lures. - any tips on using/rigging my lures/bait would be appreciated.. I did try a few worms as well but they got wet and died for nothing. The rest are back in the worm farm safe for another day.
If anyone had more success than me would love to hear your brag, and I can live off your glory until next time!!!

Mulloway bash - help
Submitted by buschy on Sat, 2011-01-22 21:52Hey folks - heading out after the next new moon for a bit of a mulloway bash. Let's just say it's been a while between drinks, with a newborn and a new business fishing has been on hold of late.
If things go to plan I will head up to Wedge or Hill River but I might not be able to go that far. I'd like to find a spot fairly locally that turns up the mulla's on a fairly regular basis - preferably a beach and somewhere that I can fish from or at least close to the 4x4.
Not asking for your secret spot, but if you want to help me out and break my mulla drought I would be more than grateful.
Thanks all,
Buschy
