Small legal size
Submitted by GrahamM on Fri, 2011-01-14 15:55Gday i was wondering if anyone else feels the same way about the legal size of crabs is the legal size too small? I went crabbing the other day with my brother and the kids down Manduah and yes we did get our 20 but i usually dive for them and only get big ones. Here is a pic of 20 in the esky but they seem small to me but i assure you they were all legal size or bigger.

Club Capricorn Shark Bash
Submitted by nicksapheno on Fri, 2011-01-14 13:35Hey,
recently got my hands on my first shovelnose and something much bigger (lost) while up at monkey mia.
Just wanted to put the word out to see if anyone is up for arranging a meet and a session one evening?
Still learning everyday so would be good to be around more experienced fishermen and people who are like me all the same.
Cheers

Bag limit question
Submitted by dkonig82 on Fri, 2011-01-14 12:14Wondering whether anyone can answer this.
Last time I went out night fishing we got our 2 dhu limit pretty quickly and then started targeting other species.
However later in the night we got another dhuie as bycatch. The fish was stuffed and I very much doubt it survived, but I tried to release it anyway as we already had out limit.
It wasnt until the next day that I wondered whether I was able to keep it, as by the time we had returned to shore it was 3am.
Given that we started fishing around 8pm the day previously, could we have kept it given that we were out there over 2 days and 3 fish is less than 2 days limit?
Cheers
Dan

Safe to eat?
Submitted by Depth_Charge on Fri, 2011-01-14 11:56Are there some tell-tale signs that fish are safe to eat or not?
I took the kids fishing last week near Lilac Hill Reserve (Guildford). We caught a few almost sized black bream (on whole river prawns) which were released, but just wondering if any sized ones would be OK for eating that far up river? They want to go again this weekend and the plan is to hunt around for some sized ones to take home for the plate if possible.

Stainless Boat seat
Submitted by Man Overboard on Fri, 2011-01-14 11:21Hey guys i am looking at getting a seat made up from stainless tube, with a seat on top and enough room for an esky to fit underneath. Maybe a swing away lumbar support, back to front.
Does anyone have some pics or any experience with these.

commercial demersal gill net info
Submitted by hezzy on Thu, 2011-01-13 11:59over a very long period of time there have been many anecdotal storys regards interaction/conflict with commercial demersal gill net operators …
The main areas seem to be the west and south coast inshore areas ,but other places as well along the coast
im very interested to gather information on any incidents/accounts that you have experienced out on the water , since the metro area was closed to commercial fishing these incidents seem to be increasing in other places
Many rec fishers have voiced an ongoing concern at the conflict that has occurred , with these operators and the locations they are targeting im looking to collect as much info on these as possible
while I recognise they can legally conduct their operations at present , and scale fish are a legal catch not bycatch using this method .. …it’s the conflict accounts im most interested in ..one on one accounts with them out on the water
good information would be ,LFB boat numbers /names … video , pictures of occurrences and short written account …. , dates times etc ….even if its as simple as a picture of their gear set with id number visible…… to identify the licenced owner
please feel free to pm me any of the above
Cheers hezzy

Recreational fishers help new logbook survey aimed at researching fish catch
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2011-01-12 10:24Norman Moore
Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Fisheries; Electoral Affairs
Wed 12 January, 2011
Portfolio: Fisheries
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has urged recreational fishers to get involved with the most comprehensive fishing survey ever conducted in Western Australia.
Mr Moore said many had already agreed to participate in a group of 3,000 boat-based fishers who will record their fishing activities in logbooks for a 12-month period and share the information with the Department of Fisheries.
“These fishers are helping provide better catch data for the recreational sector and I urge anglers to support all aspects of this research initiative,” he said.
“Logbooks are the cornerstone of this important new survey, but information will also be obtained through interviews with recreational fishers at boat ramps, additional phone surveys and from contacts with fishers by Fisheries’ staff.
“The department expects to contact up to 23,000 recreational fishers during the survey period.
“The supply, catch and effort information this survey will provide will give us more comprehensive data to help the better management of our fisheries.
“Department of Fisheries’ researchers will also record video images at major boat ramps which will assist in validating fishing effort over 24-hour periods.”
The Minister said the 12-month survey, done in collaboration with Edith Cowan and Murdoch universities, and Recfishwest would provide more robust estimates of the quantity of fish retained and released by recreational fishers.
The survey is funded from revenue generated by the Recreational Fishing from a Boat Licence (RFBL) and is an example of how the money raised by the RFBL is spent to benefit recreational fishers.
“Researchers will, for the first time, estimate catches for every marine bioregion in WA and cover all fishing times across the day and all access points, using data from boat-based fishers around the State,” Mr Moore said.
The Minister encouraged recreational fishers to assist with the survey if they were contacted or interviewed by survey staff during the year.
“I believe most recreational fishers know the value of having fish for the future and how more comprehensive information about fishing activity will help ensure we can continue to manage WA fisheries in a sustainable way,” Mr Moore said.
More information about WA’s Recreational Boat Fishing Survey for 2011 is available online at http://www.fish.wa.gov.au

Fisheries have done it again!!
Submitted by southcity104 on Wed, 2011-01-12 08:20Low puerulus counts meant low and declining lobster stock and catch rates over the next years.
Well in cervantes at the moment they have never seen crays like it ever! Since the beginning of the season catches were above average but now its something else. The thompson boats have a 500kilo a week limit, others are only pulling 20 to 30 pots a day. Yesterday the bloke i know pulled 30 pots for 35 crays a pot average!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats almost a crate a pot! To give you some perspective 'you'd be jumping for joy at 4 a pot"
The fishermen are reducing their catches now hoping the price will rise to a higher price towards the end of the season.

Submitted by tiimmbo on Tue, 2011-01-11 20:58Could have bagged out our 12 in 1 dive the other day but every cray was full of berries. Tried a couple of different spots, 20m and 16m same story everywhere. Certainly a nice way to spend a hot morning though swimming around under the water. Going to hit the 3 mile tomorrow and see whats about.

Walking The Dog
Submitted by ADDICT- dUFFMAN on Tue, 2011-01-11 15:38I have 2 breaming lures:
a river 2 sea Baby rover (http://www.mylureshop.com/p/999804/river2sea-baby-rover-50.html)
and a Berkley 3B Scumdog
both surface walking lures.
I cannot get the correct swimming action on either of these lures are there any tricks or tips to improve technique to allow the side to side action?
Also is there a preffered knot you have to tie to the lure (eg a loop knot) to allow this action to work at the moment im using a uni-kont?
Thanks in advance
Cheers Duffman

Kayak hatch found.
Submitted by Buz on Tue, 2011-01-11 14:58Gday all, just thought id post this up to see if it belonged to anyone on here or anyone you know.
Found it on the side of the Old Vasse Hwy near Pemberton last Thursday. Looks like its from a Malibu kayak(mini x maybe?). Four locks on it.
34.5cm x 26.5cm.
Went along some of the campsites along heartbreak trail, but no one seemed to have a kayak to suit.

Just an idea
Submitted by Pezdog on Tue, 2011-01-11 13:00Hi All
Thinking it might be an idea to try and help out our QLD folk. Maybe a fishing comp to try and raise some coin? Could have an entry fee etc
I wouldn't be the man to organise this as the logistics could be a nightmare and i'm a fairly simple meat and 3 veg bloke. But if anyone has organised something similar before it may have some legs.
Not sure how it would go and how much we could raise but I would be keen to decky or if landbased I could be tempted. Just an idea.
Cheers
