HOOKS

Stoked
I only ever use Owner SSW hooks for demersals, but the price kills me.
But just found this Aussie company who seems to be priced right.
http://hooksonline.com.au/index.html
From what I can tell, if you purchase over $120.00 delivery is free. Anybody else interested in a group order??
I'm after these babies - http://hooksonline.com.au/catalog/i32.html
But can't see it would matter if a mixed order

just a couple of questions
Submitted by poketz on Wed, 2010-11-24 17:55just wanted to ask a quick few questions.
after just getting back from a recent trip with a few mates and landing a few decent rays (1 of which was easily 150kg and taking a 650m run) and a few little sharks. i have decided i would like to get a decent l/b game setup.
i would like to use my spheros 14000fb but would like to put the 18000 spool on it. is this possible?
also after a decent l/b game spin rod to match it up with. budget is around 200-300.
any help would be much appreciated

you want fries with that?
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2010-11-24 12:5570-year-old angler Gunther Hansel spent more than two hours battling with a 2.4 meter Halibut while on a trip to Iceland's Western Fjords.
And when he finally got his prize alongside his fishing boat, the German pensioner needed the help of five crewmates to haul the beast aboard.
The monster fish weighed in at 219kgs - big enough to serve up almost 1,000 individual fillets.
But rather than shop around for a bigger freezer, Gunther sold his prize catch for around $4000 once he returned to shore.
Gunther, from Magdeburg near Berlin, said afterwards: 'This is the fish I have been fishing for all my life.'
He used a 13kg line and a plastic lure to snare the fish.
Halibut thrive in cold north Atlantic waters and can reach up to 4.5 meters in length.

Are wrasse considered edible??
Submitted by r.gates on Tue, 2010-11-23 22:20Hi all
During last weekend's fishing trip out from the Cut, we caught a few decent sized wrasse...mainly the Western King (red variety) but also a couple of the Brown Spotted, too. As we weren't sure about their eating qualities, we erred on the side of caution and returned them to the water. Enjoyed the fight on light gear, especially from the bigger ones.
Are these fish considered 'table fish'...as they don't get a mention in any of the West Coast Region Recreational Fishing Guide's 'Risk Species' regarding bag limits or minimum size, I'm guessing that they aren't too sort after.
Your thought or comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
regards

Boating for a week - no flush
Submitted by Joodles on Tue, 2010-11-23 20:00Hi all
Just chasing some quality opinions regarding flushing of the outboard motor. Whats happening is at Christmas I'm going down to Walpole for our family holiday and I'm taking the boat, hopefully to get out the back this time aswell as capitalizing on the brilliant inlet fishing there is to be had down there. Now although I've been fishing my whole life and boating for most of it, I've never been in the situation where the boat will stay in the water for 6 days straight. I just have a concern for the donk as it's allways been flushed out at the end of each day on the blue. The freshwater facilities at Rest Point are limited so I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the issue of not flushing the outboard after 6 continious days in salty water? Is it the case that consistant use prevents corrosion buildup?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers all.

slam baits
Submitted by criddle on Tue, 2010-11-23 18:35has any one tried slam bait soft plastic lure, they look similar to berkley gulp and are both biodegradable with scent. I use gulp a crap load and was wondering if they have the same hit rates as the gulps. I was wondering if they are any good on demersal fish like snapper, due, black ass etc.

Fullscale lures
Submitted by Luke R on Tue, 2010-11-23 16:53hey all
This is for all you GT anglers out there
I am very pleased to anouce that we at All boat business have secured Full scale lures as a supplier. We will be the exclusive retailer in W.A to stock a range of fullscale poppers and stickbaits for all you mad GT fisherman. Full scales are hand crafted aussie lures that are built extremely tough and with an excellent finish. We will also have some of the new colours in stock also. I expect the shipment to arrive before the end of the week.
Pop in and check them out and see the quality for yourself!
A blurb from Full Scale Lures
Full Scale Lures - the entire range - every individual lure, is built to a standard not a price point. This is the fundamental thought behind everything that Full Scale Lures stands for. It extends from the design right through to the sale, and in performance when fishing.
The standards set by us start with a comprehensive 12 month process, crafting and refining each design. Fine tuning weight distribution for aerodynamics in the cast, and fish attracting performance on water.
The next step in the process is extensive field testing with experienced GT Popper fishermen in known big fish waters like Kiribati and Jewel Reef. This is vital to gain the anglers impressions, especially when conditions are less than ideal, and when the fish are being uncharacteristically fussy. Each lure is re-examined against its individual capture record and notes on performance on the water. **If further adjustments are deemed necessary, the lure design has to undergo further field testing before it is released for sale - otherwise it falls short of the standard.

Finally have done it!
Submitted by Oracle on Mon, 2010-11-22 22:21Hi all.
It's been a few years now that I've been logging onto and reading about all the stuff that goes on within the website but I've finally become a member and hope to meet and fish/scuba with a few more in the community. Seems very odd writing the first post to you all as I feel that I know a few of you reasonably well through reading your posts over the time so here's a bit of backgound for you all about me.
I've been in Perth now for about 7-8 years of which, only really being into fishing for the last 3 years or so. Been out with a few of the crew here including Simon C (quite a bit actually and got me addicted), Sam and even Adam once when in Exmouth but really only just learning the ropes. I am a little lucky to have a business that has provided me with enough cash/time to be able to really get into the boating side of fishing/diving in a hurry and enjoy it so I'll be happy to look out for people looking for deckie spots when I head out. In saying that, I'm pretty keen to hit the water on nearly nothing notice and especially keen to do some diving for crays with ANYONE that can teach me how to actually get my hands on one of the little suckers!
I'm a MASSIVE seafood lover and happy to eat a fresh fish any day of the week however, I also am very pro fishing for the future and am one of the guys who thinks licences and smaller bag limits aren't an issue. If there's anything going on to save our fishing future, I'd love to learn more about it and really think that sites like Fishwrecked are a great source of information and idea sharing.
Hope I can get involved in some of the discussions and I'm pretty sure I know the difference between a Pink Snapper and a silver bream - good start i think!

So if anyone can give me any tips on whats worth buying at the moment that would be great as we aim to hit the beaches for overniters over the next few weeks to try our luck for some Tailor/herring e.t.c

Trolling for Coral trout
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2010-11-22 14:36Went out on the weekend and stayed overnight out in some cozy bay.
Mission of the trip, Catching a trout trolling! Mission result NADA. Perhaps I was doing something wrong, but changed lures from Halcos, Rapala's, R2S trihos, and colours but especially the trusted gold pattern Halco with only 3 Undersize trout for a hell of trying. Got some bycatch like a thumping Mick jagger trevor etc.
Was using 60lb fluoro leader straight onto 30lb braid, trolling as slow as the boat will go. Covered very likely country on the sounder with bommies ranging from 10-4m, and lucky sometime to not loose a lure to the shallow stuff. Boat speed about 2.7-3knots, with Withdoc in tow about 8m off the back. Port lure 15m back, StarB lure 20m back.
Was I just unlucky or am I doing something wrong.
Interested in comments because mission was trout only, so didnt even bottom bash.

I LUV "KOKS"
Submitted by abeldog on Mon, 2010-11-22 09:33ISLAND
There I was Sunday afternoon, near the end of the Demersal Ban, bored, surfing the Fishwrecked site devouring everything it has to offer, some lame guy catching fish on the TV, when I came across a discussion topic posted by Carnovite titled "Cannot Wait".
It was a posting of the forthcoming weeks weather from Shark Bay to Gnarloo. I opened the blog, my heart started racing, jumped out of my chair and rang my mate Grahame in Carnarvon. " I'm coming up next Friday night, were fishing for two days and then I'm driving back home to Perth, A confused response was "OK You Do That, Ill see you and hung up the phone". All of a sudden there were so many things to do. Get the rods & reels ready, jigs, plastics etc etc. Do research on Carnarvon, Bernier & Dorre Island, tha's when I came across KOKS ISLAND. KOKS ISLAND is about 2km north of Bernier Island and about 30nm west of Carnarvon.
A "LONG HAUL" Journey had started to be on my friends boat called " LONG HAUL"
Day 1 - What A COD of a Day
We arrived at Koks Island just after sunrise.
- first drop, busted off and lost my New Pirate Jig on a very Toothy Critter
- second drop busted off and lost my 7" White Gulp to another unstopable
- third drop " Mr Charlie Court" comes on board and Iam starting to think what else
Why don't we move I suggested and the rest is as follows as the pictures show.
Day 2 - "Can It Get Any Better"
Once again we put "Long Haul" in before sunrise and made the journey to the islands, a very gentle w/sw was blowing and Julie was full of expectation as this was a trip she was going to try plastics and jigs. " Got them, never tried them" she said, "well we might just have to change that" I replied. Today we were fishing off the South End of Dorre Island.
- Julie first drop on a white gulp, Nice Red Throat
- Julie second drop a Sambo that didn't get sharked what a work out
- George first drop on my new "HOMEMADE JIG" a 14.5kg Dhuie, YAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOO
- Grahame has had enough grabs Julies rod with the white gulp, hooks into something for twenty minutes then busts off
- Pull out my New Ockta Jig ( Thanks Twitchemup} pulls in a nice baldie
- George 6th drop loose my other Pirate Jig to unstopable ( also trolled and hooked into a Tuna) before I lost the jig.
- George troll a Rapala Deep Diver for the run home and had a huge WAHOO before he threw the hooks at the boat. Dammmmnnnn
- George another Tuna.
All in all a fantastic trip, great company on board the " Long Haul" for the Long Haul back and then the drive home.
What a trip to christen the new Simth 54H and Twinpower SW8000,
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
