Cray Questions
Submitted by Hicko on Mon, 2018-01-08 12:12Hey all,
I'm very green to the crayfishing game and just wanted to clarify a few things about the season.
I understand that the whites have been and gone and they are out deep now. Do they come back at all or do they stay out deep?
From here on is dropping my posts close to some reef the best way to go about it?
Thanks in advance.

Reviving Old Yamaha Engine
Submitted by Tbox on Sun, 2018-01-07 08:41Gday fishos ill start off with this is a great forum and awesome community so looking forward to contributing more. Basically we have a 1990 yamaha 40 HP 4-stroke from my grandfather and me and dad are in the process of trying to get it up and running again so ive got a few questions so bear with me.
So the engine hasnt been run in around 10 years (only have an idea) most of which has been in our garage. Aside from a bit of surface rust on the exterior it seems to be in pretty good condition but this is just looking on the outside. Dad has already removed the carbs and taken them apart to check their condition and they were looking pretty sweet execpet for a few seals which we have already replaced. Thermostat was buggered, spark plugs need replacing and we've just removed the lower leg so we can replace the water pump and we have the parts for all that on the way. If ive missed any other details let me know. Ill put some pictures in on the exterior of the engine.

So here's where we need some help (see pictures below the question if it helps)
We have basically no experience in terms of prepping an engine after this amount of time of not being used or boat engines to begin with so what other things should we be looking at to make sure its good to go or even if it will start at all? Done some research for replacing fuel lines but any other info would be a big help
As i said thermostat was buggered and there's still lots of crap from where it was, whats the best way to clean this out?

One of the other issues with the motor is the tilt as seized from rust. Any ideas on how we can fix this or are we better off replacing whatever parts need replacing?

Also near the water pump under the damper seal (just going off diagrams online) the metal looks like its been pretty corroded will this be an issues later on even after the seal is replaced?

Last question is when we removed the lower leg there was quite a lot of oil around the water pump. We arent sure if this is normal or because we had the engine on its side for a while or if there might be a leak somewhere. Any idea which it could be and if its a leak where it might be from? In the above picture the water block was completely full of oil which we wiped out.

Asking a lot but basically any info on the questions ive asked or other things that i havent mentioned would be really appreciated
Cheers and tight lines.

PRICE DROP - 2018 GAMEX and AIBT
Submitted by SEAFORCE CORAL BAY on Sat, 2018-01-06 22:38PRICE DROP AND FULL PACKAGES AVAILABLE - WE ARE FISHING THE COMPS NO MATTER WHAT NUMBERS WE GET SO PRICES ARE NOW AT COST - PRICING AVAILABLE TO FW MEMBERS ONLY FOR 24H THEN TO PUBLIC
This year its the 50th GAMEX and it was allways going to be a big one, but with Eddie finally cracking the grander blue it is set to be massive. We will be having a real crack at it too, and we feel that we have the crew and the vessel to be in the mix. With our first Exmouth comp going very well, taking out champion boat Marlin and combined in the most recent comp (2017 Billfish Bonanza). We where the only boat to manage to tag Marlin in very avarage fishing conditions and hooking a Marlin Grandslam on the first day. Since then we have put in a lot of time learning even more about the Exmouth grounds, and testing new gear and techniques. Including a few overnight trips refining day and night Broadbil Sworfish fishing techniques. With a new catagory this year just for Broadbill we wanted to get a head start.
We are still looking for a crew for GAMEX and AIBT. The Australian International Billfish Tournament is a 3 day tag and release comp running 13th to the 16th of March. Gamex is WA's biggest fishing comp running 16th to the 24th of March, with 6 days fishing. We will be fishing both comps, targeting Billfish and large Pelagis trolling lures and baits, running 10-60kg stand up. We will also spend time targeting Broadbill Swordfish during the day during both comps. For more info about both comps see www.egfc.com.au for more info abouts us our crew and our vessel see www.seaforcecharters.com.au
We are taking expressions of intrest from groups and individuals to fish with us. The ideal number for game fishing is 4 people but 6-8 or more is still fine just less time on the rod each.
AIBT - 3 days competition game fishing 12 hours 6am to 6pm - Whole boat fishing only $4000 - PP fishing only $900 - PP full packages fishing, accom, meals, entry fee (not flights) $1750
GAMEX - 6 days game fishing 12 hours 6am to 6pm - Whole boat fishing only $8800 - PP fishing only $1800 - PP full package fishing, accom, meals, entry fee (not flight) $3250
Also possible to fish part of the comp $300pp per day.
If you are intrested please contact us at or via our website www.seaforcecharters.com.au
You will not find better value to have a real crack at this comp, with most simmilar charters costing 20-30k+ for GAMEX.
Pricing is for fishing only, does not include food on vessel, accomodation, entry fees or memberships if required. But all can be arranged if required.

new to yellow fin whiting popping
Submitted by Steve911 on Fri, 2018-01-05 17:53Hey fish-o's,
Recently a good mate of mine tooke me on my first outing targeting yellow fin whiting on poppers. i have caught heaps of yellow fin before but always on bait..... I never had any luck on lures until yesterday. I had some success due to his guidance on how to use lures properly and now im hooked (mind the pun) its all i can think about.
I was wondering if i could get peoples opinions on retrieval techniques and what works best for you. Im not asking for spots to fish. just what you may have learned in your time targeting these little pocket rockets of the shallows.
Thanks in advance!

Have seen some steep ramps in my time!
Submitted by sunshine on Fri, 2018-01-05 17:05But this one tops my list of incredibly steep.......would never even consider it in anything less than a fourby, you must have negligable swell .....yet this is on the Great Ocean Road a little east of Port Campbell (and that is another story as they use a crane to lift boats in and out) and hence on the Southern Ocean. Two boats had braved the conditions when we were there and the Southerly was just building up......stuff that for a game of soldiers!

Trailer hub oil bath caps advice
Submitted by RohanKok on Fri, 2018-01-05 15:59Good day guys and girls,
I have the oil bath caps on my trailer hubs and if I fill them about halfway full the oil is all gone within a very short distance - less than 50 kms. It definitely comes out the back seal. I am wondering if this is standard or is the oil meant to stay in there much longer than that?
In saying that though, the bearrings are still very smooth and don't seem to get water inside them at all. This is my first boat trailer with this design so any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

electric trailer winch
Submitted by wez0062 on Thu, 2018-01-04 08:04hey guys, i am installing a electric winch on my trailer to pull the boat on with. I am going to use the wiring loom supplied with the kit. Just wondering if there are any issues with running direct from the car battery while idling, as i am hearing that having a battery on the trailer is better, but i don't want to go that route. Surely the wiring kit supplied would be suitable !!
Any thoughts / advice is welcome

Snapper fishing
Submitted by MALANA605 on Wed, 2018-01-03 14:50I have been boat fishings for 2 seasons now and to date have only caught 1 snapper that being around the Hale road reef structure. Apart from that I am more of a fish feeder than catcher. Do i need to go well beyond the 3 or 4 nm area to catch snapper, is 12 -15m to shallow?, should I be looking at heading out to the 30 to 40m depth area to locate them. I am starting to think that the one I did catch was actually lost. Not looking for actual locations but more the distance out and depth. I have the boat to get me there, a 6m cc old Razerline with a 130 honda on the back. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Beach Fishing - Exmouth
Submitted by Scott129 on Tue, 2018-01-02 22:05Hi Guys,
Looking for advice on what setups to use for beach fishing in Exmouth.
Trying to target sharks mainly for a bit of fun and just wondering what is a good size line to use? Mono or braid? Size and length or trace?
Will also be having a go at using a shimano TLD 25 with a short beast master rod and casting with a drone. Have done a couple of tests around perth and it works well so far. Is there any reason why for this setup i couldnt go 100lb braid with 150lb trace? Was thinking of going overboard on the setup and just adjust drag as necessary in the hope that we loose nothing.
Any suggestions as to why this is a bad idea?
Thanks, Scott

Xmas bags
Submitted by sea-kem on Tue, 2018-01-02 17:42Had a few trips out over the break in some fairly ordinary wind and conditions, but the fish made up for it with some awesome bangers and some crays to top the bags off. Son topped it off today (last pic) with a bang on 10kg model.
Oh and so lovely to get pinged by some wanker in a yellow boat today lol. Watched him drive right by us and press the waypoint button on his GPS, good luck chum we were well off our mark.
